TEACHER QUALIFICATIONS Parents/Guardians in the Cedar Rapids Community School District have the right to learn about

the following qualifications of their child’s teachers: state licensure requirements for the grade level and content areas taught, the current licensing status of your child’s teacher, and baccalaureate/graduate certification/degree. You may also request the qualifications of an instructional parapro-fessional who serves your student in a schoolwide Title I program. Parents/Guardians may request this information by calling the Hoover Office.

The Cedar Rapids community School District ensures that parents will be notified in writing if their child has been assigned, or has been taught by a teacher for four or more consecutive weeks who is not considered highly qualified.

Note from the PrincipalHawk Talk

Hello Hoover families,

This month our students in grades 3-5 took the annual Iowa Assessments. The results of these assessments won’t be available until the end of the year. We will use them as one piece of our ongoing assessments to monitor student growth. Throughout the year, our students complete building and district as-sessments that are more effective in helping us determine where our students

need assistance, and where they have made growth on our priority standards from the previous assessment. We are constantly looking for what each of our students need, and how we can best support their individual needs.

During our conferences in February, many of you took the opportunity to complete the Title 1 survey for the district. We really appreciated your willingness to take a few extra minutes to let us know your thoughts. We are always reflecting, and looking for ways to improve our practice. Your feedback is part of that process, and I am looking forward to reviewing the re-sults of the survey.

Throughout the year, we have really emphasized helping our students developing what is called a “growth mindset”. I discussed this once earlier in the year, but thought I would share some phrases we use at school that you could use at home to help your children also realize that through hard work and problem solving, they are capable of taking on any challenge.

Instead of: Try Thinking:I’m not good at this. What am I missing?I give up. I’ll try a different strategy. This is too hard. This may take some time and effort.I made a mistake. Mistakes help me to learn better. It’s good enough. Is it really my personal best?

Thanks so much for always supporting our students, and for making sure that they perse-vere, and never give up!

Take care,Clint StonePrincipal, Hoover Elementary

SLEEP AND THE SCHOOL AGE STUDENTDoes this sound like your child or teen?

Eric’s teacher reports that Eric has been having difficulty paying attention in class. When he is redirected to pay attention, he talks back to the teacher.

OR

The School Nurse calls to report that Alison has been coming to the Health Office frequently complaining of headaches.

Students with behavior problems such as difficulty paying attention, poor decision making, irritability, depression, violent tendencies and physical complaints could be suf-fering from sleep deprivation. Studies show that more than two thirds of children who suffer from chronic daily headaches also experience sleep disturbance, especially if they are staying up to late.

To improve sleep in children and teens follow the suggestions below:

• The bedroom should not be a place where a child/teen is stimulated with TV, videos, or com-puters.

• The bedroom should be a restful environment that promotes rest and sleep.

• Children and teens should have a routine that includes calm activities such as reading and preparing for sleep the last hour they plan to be awake.

School age children and teens need at least 9 – 10 hours of sleep at night to be alert, at their optimum health and ready to learn.

METRO CARE CONNECTIONThe Cedar Rapids Community School District is fortunate to have three “Metro Care Connection”

health centers. They offer free health care to all Cedar Rapids students without access to affordable health insurance or a primary care provider. Each center is staffed by a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. Our nurse practitioners provide:

•Physical exams and immunizations

•Treatment of minor illness

•Basic laboratory tests

•Prescriptions for medications

•Health education and counseling

•Referral for complex medical conditions

Contact your school’s health offi ce if you would like more information regarding Metro Care Connection.

If you have any concerns or questions regarding a health issue or if you need assistance obtain-ing a health care provider, do not hesitate to call your school’s health offi ce.

Making Up Instructional Time Lost to Weather

The District is required to make up all instructional time lost when classes are delayed or cancelled because of weather. Options include using a make-up date as identi ed on the District calendar, adding time to the beginning and end of a school day starting after spring break, or tapping into hours in excess of the state minimum requirement of 1,080.

Make up decisions for weather events are decided on a case-by-case basis. Families will always be made aware as early as possible following a weather event through the School Messenger call system and the District website.

PROOF OF RESIDENCY All new students entering the Cedar Rapids

Community School District, current students en-tering a new building or current students who move to a new residence must provide the proper documentation to establish proof of residency. The name and address on these documents must match the name and address of the parent or legal guardian (or primary parent) of the student. The legal residence of a minor student is the same as that of his/her parents/guardians. If the residence of a minor is not the same as the parent’s, the residence must have been established for the sake of the student having a home and not for the sake of attendance in the District or a build-ing. Acceptable proof of residency documents are listed below.

• The parent/guardian name and the residence address must be listed on the document and residency at the address is required.

• Purchase contract with possession date or closing date

• Most recent property tax bill• Recent mortgage statement• Utility bill (gas or electric) for the last or cur-

rent month • If you rent, please provide one of the following:• A current, signed lease or rental agreement

with the rental term listed• Utility bill (gas or electric) for the last or cur-

rent month• A pay stub from your employer, for the last or

current month, showing the resident address• A notarized letter from the landlord with the

rental term listed. It must list the property owner’s name, address, and signature; and the name and signature of the parent/guardian re-siding at the residence. Additional information:

• Any student whose residency is deemed home-less will be verified by our District Homeless Coordinator.

• Falsification of any information or document required for residence verification, or the use of the address of another person without ac-tually residing there may result in revocation of enrollment at an attendance center and reassignment to resident school.Procedure 602.4c may be viewed in full at:

SUMMER SAFETYAs the weather warms up and summertime approaches, it is important to be reminded of some

safety tips. Here are a few ideas to help keep your child or teen or any adult safe this summer:

Water Safety• No one should ever swim alone.• Remain with and watch over children while in or near water.• Don’t swim in unsafe water.• Be sure your child learns to swim.

Bikes, Skates, and Skateboards• Be sure your child always wears a helmet that fits.• Wear knee and elbow pads when appropriate• Be sure your child knows your rules about where and when your child may ride or skate.• Teach your child the rules of the road.

Sun Exposure• Insist that your child or teen wears sunscreen and don’t forget to reapply yourself, too.• Make sure to have adequate water and fluids for all to prevent dehydration.• Avoid peak sun exposure between the hours of 11AM and 2PM.

Miscellaneous

When in wooded or grassy areas, wear protective clothing or bug sprays to protect against tics and other insects. Remember to check scalp and clothing after being in these areas.

Iowa state law requires seat belts be worn in the front seat by all passengers and beginning July 1, 2010 Iowa state law will require passengers up to age 18 wear a seat belt or be in a proper restraint seat in the back seat of a vehicle. By law a child under 6 years must be secured in a child restraint seat (a safety seat or booster seat). A child under 1 year and less than 20# must be secured in a rear facing child restraint system. Due to possible air bag injuries children should be restrained in the back seat of your vehicle.

Remember: Children learn from example and will imitate both your safe and unsafe habits. Take the time to enjoy the outdoors and play with them!

HY-VEE CASH FOR STUDENTSPlease remember to bring in your Hy-Vee

receipts. This is a very easy way to raise money for your student’s

school. For every $200 in receipts, Hoover receives a $1. No receipt is too small, all the amounts add up in the end. Please remind family and friends to save their receipts. We have a large blue bin in the front foyer for you to deposit receipts in.

Thank you!

FUTURE KINDERGARTENERS AND PRESCHOOLERS

March 4th will be kindergarten & preschool registration for the school year of 2016-2017 This is a city wide registration for incoming kindergarteners. If you have a child the will be 5 years old or a preschooler please stop by to register them or spread the word if you know someone with a child that age. All registrations will be taken at the district main office at 2500 Edgewood RD NW on that date. Please feel free to contact Hoover’s main office with any ques-tions 319-558-2369.

Thank you
