GACT Annual Report 2014
Foreword from the
Minister for Sport
and Recreation
Shane Rattenbury
Minister for Sport and Recreation
Gymnastics continues to be one of the ACT‟s most popular participation sports with many thousands of children, young and older adults involved each and every week. Gymnastics provides participants with basic human movement skills for their future growth and development and for older adults the chance to develop their flexibility, strength, balance and co-ordination.
The ACT Government is committed to increasing participation in all forms of physical and recreational activities that lead to a healthier Canberra population. Sports such as gymnastics that have a large participation rate at the pre-school and primary school ages go a long way to assisting the Government in achieving this goal.
The recent pilot program of the Gymnastics Australia “LaunchPad” initiative, which provides a fundamental movement program for children up to 12 years of age into selected ACT schools, was a great success and I congratulate Gymnastics ACT on that achievement and look forward to its continued roll-out across Canberra.
The sport continues to grow and evolve as evidenced by the increased participation levels and programs rolled out by Gymnastics ACT clubs. The ACT Government has been proud to support various programs such as Enable Gymnastics which enhances the general health, welfare and wellbeing of participants with a physical or intellectual disability and the Groove and Move Gentle Gym program for participants aged 50 years and over, to the benefit and health of the wider ACT community.
7
GACT Annual Report 2014
There has also been continuing development of club facilities across Canberra with the ACT Government supporting new equipment and infrastructure at Woden Valley and Southern Canberra Gymnastics Clubs, and most recently replacement flooring at Canberra City and Woden Valley Gymnastics Clubs.
I congratulate Gymnastics ACT on another successful year. The ACT Government is committed to working with Gymnastics ACT to support the future direction and strategic opportunities for the sport in the ACT.

GACT Annual Report 2014
In 2013 the Board developed a strategic plan that sought to develop gymnastics in the ACT in a range of areas. As we move into the final year of the plan it is both appropriate to understand how we are progressing and what the next stage may look like.
The plan in 2013 was aligned to the Gymnastics Australia (GA) frame work of:
Engage and Enthuse
Enable
Excel
Endure
Gymnastics ACT (GACT) sought to engage and enthuse the sport by increasing participation and improving the recognition of the sport within the ACT. In 2014 participation grew for a second year and the targets we had set ourselves are well within reach. GACT and Canberra City Gymnastics Club also conducted a very successful pilot under the ACT Government‟s Healthy Weight initiative. This pilot trialled the Launch Pad program in schools and resulted in both improved teacher confidence and the participants thoroughly enjoyed the program.
Gymnastics is a demanding sport on both the athletes and all the technical staff. It is always inspiring to see the ongoing contribution of our technical members and the highly professional support the sport receives from these individuals. We should continue to support and grow this community that is so important for our success. As new coaching frameworks and the new GA Customer Relationship Management system is rolled out there is further potential to assist our technical members.
Report from the President
9
GACT Annual Report 2014
GACT is a small association without a dedicated „high performance‟ program as would be found in the larger states. The strategic plan aimed for ACT to hold our own on the national stage and in some areas this has occurred and in other areas we are still working hard. It is always a pleasure to see the hard work of our young athletes pay off in national competitions.
The highlight of 2014 for GACT was the selection of James Bacueti to join the Gymnastics Australia‟s MAG National Centre of Excellence at the AIS. This is a program designed by Gymnastics Australia and the Australian Sports Commission jointly to improve the capacity of Australia‟s MAG team and athletes to achieve the ambitious performance targets which have been set for the sport of gymnastics for the remainder of the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games cycles under the Federal Government‟s High Performance strategy - Australia‟s Winning Edge (AWE).
A great deal of effort in 2014 was in ensuring our sport had solid governance and resilience. The review of the Constitution continued and a number of policies and procedures were further developed. While never „attractive‟ work, the need for a simple and effective governance system in any sport is fundamental to its enduring presence. I would like to acknowledge the work of both the Board and the Governance sub-committee in this area.
As we plan for the association over the next four years these principles are still relevant and the activities we undertake need to continue our progress in making Gymnastics a fundamental part of the sporting landscape of the ACT.
I would like to record my sincere thanks for the support of Mrs Mary Schumacher in her capacity as the GACT Executive Director. Mary‟s enthusiasm and professional approach to the management of gymnastics in the ACT has always been first class. I would also like to acknowledge all the volunteers, including the Board and sub committees, who provide so much of their own time to ensure our athletes can participate in this terrific sport.
Andrew Bewick President

GACT Annual Report 2014
I would like to add to the President‟s words about Mary Schumacher and express my appreciation for her support and for her efforts while the Executive Director in particular the 2014 achievements summarised below in regard to the implementation of the GACT strategic plan. Nadine Weight Acting Executive Director
2014 was a year that saw a continued growth in membership in the sport across all levels and programs including the schools and adult programs which makes us confident we will achieve our strategic priorities in 2016.
GACT continues to advocate fundamental movement as an essential life skill for a child's development and position itself as the primary provider of fundamental movement programs in the ACT community.
Gymnastics, like many sports, is strongly competing with other sports to attract children and adults. However, the sport remains very popular with parents such that with our 2014 registered membership numbers being 3,604 a 6.8% increase over 2013.
Technical membership was 119 compared to 125 in 2013.
We are confident that we can continue such growth over the next 2 years which will see us reach our 2016 goal of 4,000 registered members.
Membership details:
4 registered club members (steady);
3,604 registered gymnasts (increase of 6.8%);
119 technical members – coaches and judges (4.8% decrease);

Strategy Implementation Update from the
Acting Executive Director
11
GACT Annual Report 2014
Consistent with Gymnastics Australia‟s strategic initiatives, GACT rolled out the LaunchPad program into the ACT. All 4 ACT member clubs were certified in 2014. There were 38 certified coaches and 10 observers and 96 teachers certified with 33 of these classed as observers and a total of some 3,366 children (0-12 year olds) participated in the program during 2014.
2015 and beyond
The key matters to be addressed during 2015 and 2016 (and beyond) are:
Develop and implement the GACT Communication Plan; and
Continue to grow the Gymnastics brand
In 2014 the main emphasis was to implement the revised Gymnastics Australia technical training programs and updated CRM platform within GACT and the Clubs Specific activities during 2014 included:
Conducted two Beginner Coaching courses with accreditation of 37 new Beginner coaches;
Conducted one Intermediate coaching course with accreditation of 7 new Intermediate level coaches;
Re-accredited all GACT MAG judges under the updated GA requirements and new Code of Points.
Of significance was the accreditation of GACT‟s first FIG L3 TRAMP coach– congratulation to Jack Ratz on this major achievement. GACT experienced a slight decrease (4.8%) in technical membership in 2014 and this strategic initiative must be a priority during 2015/16 to ensure we grow the technical membership consistent with the increased number of gymnasts. During 2015, GACT will conduct a detailed analysis of its technical membership to get better data, especially on those not renewing their technical membership.

12
GACT Annual Report 2014
During 2014 GACT participated with GA in regard to the development of the new Customer Relationship System (CRM) that is planned to be rolled out during 2015. The CRM will provide members with:
LMS integration
Online club affiliations
Online competition entries
Online state sanctioning of club events
Scoring system integration
BPAY/direct debit functionality
which is expected to provide significant benefits to the members. Initial activity was undertaken during 2014 to establish MOUs between GACT and the member clubs and this activity will be completed during 2015.
2015 and beyond
The key matters to be addressed during 2015 and 2016 (and beyond) are:
Review the Facilities Plan recommendations
Achieve our strategic goal of increasing the technical membership by 100;
Continue to improve the delivery of services to the members in particular:
o to increase numbers and capabilities of our technical members; o to increase administration capabilities; and o to continue to improve volunteer training and support.
To work with GA and the members to ensure wherever practical there is consistency in the use of new and existing technologies.
13
GACT Annual Report 2014
2014 saw some of our best performances at national championships with six podiums places including two Gold Medals. ACT‟s performances at the 2014 national championships provided a very strong indication that the strategic priorities are being achieved and that we have not set the bar too high in our strategic plan to achieve 12 podium performances at MAG and WAG championships and 3 at ACRO or TRAMP over the strategic plan period. The culmination of these successes was the Gold medals at Australian championships (Melanie O‟Mara (WG) on Bars and Emi Calloway/Jack Lord (ACRO) L7 MX2) and the selection of James Bacueti to a place in the MAG National Centre of Excellence, where he is the only gymnast of the 10 selected to come from a Club environment and not from a State High Performance Centre. In regard to high performance, the strategic plan has a strategic priority to “Ensure our HP system is ‘fit for purpose’ and geared towards world’s best results for Australia” the ACT does not operate its own High Performance Centre such being impractical at this stage. Nonetheless, GACT considers its current focus on talented and high performing gymnast is “fit for purpose” and is achieving results. Moreover, we are conscious of GA‟s goals and strategic initiatives in this area and in striving to raise our overall performances at national championships; we will not only achieve our performance goals but will assist GA in achieving its goals.
2015 and beyond
The key matters to be addressed during 2015 and 2016 (and beyond) are:
detailed analysis of our 2014/15 competitive performances across all Gymsports and determine what might be done to improve such performances and to make best use of the resources available within GACT;
identify clear priority options for how we can consistently raise the GACT teams and individuals performances;
work in partnership with the member clubs and the Sports Management Committees to define detailed structures and club level programs to achieve this strategic priority;
Excel
14
GACT Annual Report 2014
work with member clubs to define pathways and support for the identification and development of our best talent; and
consolidate the member clubs‟ injury analysis reports into a GACT wide report to determine what might be done for better injury prevention and treatments.
The major focus during 2014 was the review of the Constitution and the associated governance arrangements within GACT The current strategic plan, put in place in 2013, continued to be implemented during 2014 and as such was confirmed as remaining relevant and consistent with our overarching objectives.. The Governance Committee of the Board has undertaken a significant review of the GACT governance arrangements and the GACT constitution and that Board has endorsed its recommendations to establish best-practice governance arrangements for GACT. However, the changes have not been able to be finalised during 2014 but the Board is committed to finalising the changes to the constitution and the adoption of associated policies and procedures during 2015 to ensure its governance arrangements are consistent with its objectives and with good corporate governance principles. The focus on the governance and constitution review prevented any significant work in the other priority areas but with those elements being brought to a conclusion, the remaining elements will be able to be implemented.

2015 and beyond
The key matters to be addressed during 2015 and 2016 (and beyond) are:
finalise the updated governance arrangements and the constitution;
detailed arrangements with GA to implement the revised arrangement for GA to assume the responsibility for the administration of GACT;
develop and formalise an agreement between GACT and the member clubs to define the roles and responsibilities between them; and
define and develop a GACT event strategy with full cost recovery.

Gymsport Reports
Gymnastics For All (GFA) in the ACT has been busy moving forward with many of the initiatives that were introduced by Mary Schumacher before her departure, as well as building on the great events
and ideas that already existed.
The GFA ACT Display Team has had a very successful 12months. With support from Gymnastics ACT and Woden Valley Gymnastics Club, the team managed to travel to Byron Bay and Sydney to participate and compete in events. We recently received news that the team had won the Gymnastics Australia GFA Special Recognition Award which will be presented at National Championships in May. Due to the internal changes in the ACT the display team has decided to continue under the Woden Valley Gymnastics Club banner. The team still has members from clubs across the ACT.

GACT Annual Report 2014
The ACT Skills Day and Awards Day had lower numbers than at the events last year. The reasons for this were explored by the SMC and a couple of contributing factors were recognised:
A large ACT club ran an invitational event on the same day as the ACT
event: We understand that they will endeavour not to do this in the
future.
Some of the participating clubs would like to see a form of scoring at
the event: Even though formal scoring is against the philosophy of
GFA, some clubs would still like it re- introduced. This matter has been
addressed by the SMC and a modified system will be trialled for level 3
and above at the 2015 Skills Awards Day.
The GFA SMC has been discussing changes to the Skills and Awards Day events for a while now. Some of the changes will be introduced at events in 2015. The SMC believes these changes will better suit the philosophy behind Launchpad and GFA events which are about inclusion, participation, experience, fun, fitness and friendship. It would be great to see all clubs support the new initiatives and help grow these events in the future.
The ACT Clubs were invited to attend a Team Gym workshop conducted in the ACT by guest presenters from Gymnastics New South Wales. Team Gym is a participation program for all ages and abilities. Team Gym provides performance and competitive opportunities within a team environment for fun, fitness and friendship. Apparatus included in team gym are floor, tumbling and mini tramp. The workshop was well attended and Woden Valley Gymnastics Club has put together a team that is currently working towards displays in 2015.
Gymnastics ACT Presenters have run Launchpad workshops in various schools across the ACT. ACT Presenters and coaches from CCGC, WVGC and SCGC have all contributed to the Launchpad initiative. Some of the schools are now actively using the gymnastics skills they have learnt in their sporting programs.

GACT Annual Report 2014
I am grateful to have been given the role of Men‟s Technical Director for the past year. Men‟s Gymnastics is alive and well in the ACT. 2014 was a successful year both in the number of participants, the standard of competition and in the results achieved at National Championships. Men‟s Artistic Gymnastics (MAG) in the ACT continues to grow and is strongly supported by the three Clubs. All three clubs were represented in both the National Levels 1-6 competitions and Levels 7-10 at Senior State Titles. As the Men‟s Technical Director I also attended the Gymnastics Australia Advisory Meeting in Melbourne to ensure the ACT was represented and kept informed.
Coach Education Gymnastics Australia‟s new coaching accreditation system continued to be rolled out in 2014. The Beginner Coaching Course proved to be very popular and well attended. Congratulations to the candidates who started on the coaching pathway by completing the course. Intermediate Coaching courses were held as well.
Judging Judging is such a crucial part of our sport and I‟d like to thank Sue Morton for her role as Judging Coordinator. Last year we had a healthy number of participants at all of the various courses that were run. I would like to welcome all of the new judges and encourage them to continue with their judging. Thanks to Sue for running the courses.

Junior State Training Clinics Junior State Clinics continued to be a central part of the Level 1-6 Program for the ACT. The aim is to improve the standard of Men‟s Gymnastics in the ACT, by providing training for both gymnasts and coaches participating in the lower levels of the GA National Levels Program. Knowledge was shared between programs and comradeship was developed between the competitive clubs. This allows gymnasts and coaches to learn new drills and gain different perspectives from other coaches. The clinics were held at each of the three main clubs. Thanks to all of the presenters, coaches and gymnast involved.
National Championships National Championships were held at the Hisense Arena in Melbourne. An ACT team comprising of 20 gymnasts competed well, with some gaining valuable experience and others achieving excellent results. Congratulations to Jonathon Allen (WVGC) who placed 3rd on Vault in the Level 7 Under 12 and to Charlie Pocock (WVGC) who placed 3rd in the Level 8 Open competition.
Gymnast of the year For the 3rd year in a row, James Bacueti (pictured right) of Woden Valley Gymnastics Club was awarded the title of ACT Gymnast of the Year for 2014. Unfortunately James sustained an injury at National Championships and was unable to complete the competition. In December of 2014 it was announced that James had been selected as a member of the newly formed MAG Centre of Excellence at the Australian Institute of Sport.
Australian Representatives Adam Falzarano was our sole Australian representative in 2014. Adam was selected as part of the Australian Levels Tour to South Africa along with his coach Dmitry Berezovsky. The competition was held in July and Adam placed 1st on Pommel Horse, 1st on Vault, 3rd on Rings and 2nd Overall. Congratulations to Adam and Dmitry.
Finally I‟d like to thank the club representatives and members of the MAG Sports Management Committee for their support and work throughout 2014. Dave Norgate Technical Director

GACT Annual Report 2014
I have enjoyed my role as Women‟s Technical Director during 2014. Women‟s Gymnastics is thriving in the ACT and all three clubs have shown a strong participation at ACT competitions.
Coach Education A number of coaching courses were run in the ACT during 2014 with many new faces becoming accredited and many coaches upgrading to a higher level. A big thank you to Bob Morton, Dave Norgate, Mandy Barras and Naomi Nye for running many fantastic courses.
Judging I would like to thank Lesley Dickens for her role as Judging Coordinator. Judging is such an important part of our sport and Lesley has contributed so much time and effort into promoting and educating judges in the ACT.
National Championships
National Championships were again held for the first time at Hisense Arena, Melbourne in May. The ACT sent a team at level 7 and level 8 and individual gymnasts at level 9 & 10. Two ACT gymnasts won medals and I would like to congratulate both Georgia Keane and Melanie O‟Mara along with their coaches from Southern Canberra on a
fantastic achievement.

Gymnast of the Year Hannah Breynard (left) was awarded Women‟s ACT gymnast of the year for 2014. Congratulations to Hannah and her coaches from Canberra City for a fantastic achievement.
New Levels Structure The new levels structure was released in November at National Clubs Championships. It has been renamed the Australian Levels Program – ALP. This new program is looking to be more inclusive and now includes compulsory routines up to level 6. It is an exciting new time for gymnasts, coaches and judges who will be learning the new compulsory routines. The compulsory routines have a greater emphasis on artistry with beautiful routines being choreographed by Lisa Bradley. Women‟s gymnastics in the ACT continues to grow and I am looking forward to a successful and exciting year ahead. Carlene Bourandanis Technical Director

GACT Annual Report 2014
2014 was a building year for the ACT, with the recreational programs in both Woden Valley Gymnastics and Southern Canberra Gymnastics continuing to grow and increase the skill levels of their athletes and coaches
Woden Valley Gymnastics Club‟s competition squad had a big year. A total of 7 athletes competed interstate, these competitions included both trial events held at Rooty Hill gymnastics, NSW state titles and a club competition in Belmont Newcastle.
After the initial competition period we had two athletes that had obtained high enough
scores to go on to compete for the ACT at national championships in Melbourne. Djakirri Crafter (Junior International Trampoline and Double mini tramp) and Aiden Poole (U13‟s Trampoline and Double mini) both competed very well with Djakirri claiming the Silver medal in the synchronised event.
The level of trampoline coaching in the ACT is increasing all the time with two coaching workshops being held throughout the year and Jack Ratz obtaining his FIG 3 accreditation.
Looking forward to 2015 we are building as a state with increased efforts from both SCGC and WVGC. Jack Ratz Technical Director
