Giii'iitiio's resident policeman forthe summer of 1980 is TomBethune. Constable Bethune hasbeen with Duncan RCMP detach-ment for the past year but has beentemporarily posted to the Gangesdetachment for the period of hisfour-month stint on Galiano.

Tom was born and grew up inKingston, Ontario. Despite havinga grandfather named Norman hedoes not know of a family relation-ship to Dr. Bethune of China fame.

On completing his training atRegina he asked to be posted toVancouver Island as he had visitedthis area before and was attractedto it. He expects and hopes toremain in B.C. for some time.

A week before his posting toGaliano, Tom married his highschool sweetheart; Mavis. As theyhave an apartment in Duncan andMavis has a job as a dentist'sreceptionist, she has not accom-panied him to Galiano but she willbe able to visit at weekends. Withtwo days off-island every weekTom will also be able to go hometo Duncan so the separation soearly in their marriage will not betoo hard to bear.

Although he received orientationadvice from colleagues and hadpreviously visited the island, Cons-table Bethune was surprised by thequietness. For the first two nightshe had difficulty sleeping becauseof the absence of noise.

He has enjoyed the welcome hehas received from islanders andfinds them easy to talk to as he ishimself. He does not anticipatetrouble but if it should happen hecan call on Ganges detachment forreinforcements. He believes that itis most important that visitors toGaliano know that there is a policepresence on the island so he makesa point of meeting every ferry hepossibly can, especially at week-ends. '

To many older members of thecommunity the summer policemanseems to get younger every year. This, or course, is an example ofMurphy's Law of Relativity for it iswe who get older and not they whoget younger. But talk to the youngconstable and you will find amaturity of view and a sensible andresponsible attitude to his dutiesthat should encourage and reas-sure you despite the apprehensionwhich arrives every year with theholiday period. If you need policehelp, call operator (no charge) forZenith 50,000.

A happy and rewarding summerto you, Tom.JAZZ CONCERT

Wednesday evening those

constable for summer isby island tranquillity

who^ttended the jazz concert atthe Community Hall shared aunique and powerful experience.Between engagements in Van-couver one of the premier raeggebands of Jamaica,'Ras Michael andthe Sons and Daughters of Negus, came to Galiano primarily for restand relaxation, but fortunatelyagreed to perform at very shortnotice.

Between 7 and 11 pm a cross-section of islanders ranging fromsmall babies to grandparents hadtheir senses assailed, not only byan unusual and almost hypnoticrhythm of drums, electric guitarsand tambourines, but also by thebold visual beauty of the primarycolours of the group's costumeswith their hats and vests knitted instripes of red, green, yellow andblack. All this displayed before thebackdrop of a huge banner.

Gradually the concert turned intoa dance as the music invited theaudience to take an active part, ameasure of the depth of responseof the listeners.HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Twenty-four people from Mayne,Saturna and Galiano met in thePage Drive Lounge on Sundayevening, as the Gulf IslandsBranch of the B.C.Historical Asso-ciation. Matters discussed includedthe raising of the membership fee,the necessity of evaluating theIndian motif screen owned by thebranch and the dispensing of fundsto promote interest in local historyin Gulf Islands schools.

Gulf Islands Patchwork is avail-able in island stores, at theProvincial Museum or from thebranch treasurer. Donald Newgave his delegate's report of theB.C.Historical Society's annualconvention held recently at Prince-ton. The highlight was an expedi-tion to the open-pit copper minewhich he illustrated well with hisown photographs.DEATH OF BOB CLARKE

On a small island such as ourstimes of sadness and sorrow areshared. On May 31 Bob Clarke diedsuddenly while busy with his boatoutside his home on Whaler Bay.

Bob and his wife Elsie came to,live on Galiano many years agoshortly after his brother, Alan, withwife Vivienne, bought GalianoLodge. Bob was a true friend tomany. In his quiet and unobtrusiveway he performed many kindaction which showed his lovingconcern for his fellow islanders.COMING EVENTS

What's happening at SaltSpring Elementary School?

BY IAN JUKESAh, the joys of June. The days

are long, the weather warm. Theskies are blue and the sun shines

rhigh in the sky.

This year has been particularlymemorable in this regard. Thechildren have beautiful tans (or is itrust?); they run barefoot throughthe grass (are those webs betweentheir feet?); and the sports aretruly summerish (water polo any-one?) Yes, June is truly a wonder-ful time, and the teachers here atSalt Spring Elementary are glad tobe a part of it all (I have to stopwriting, my nose is growing).

However, all good things mustcome to an end sometime - and endthey will June 27 (if we make it thatfar). Speaking for myself, it can'tcome too soon.

Imagine if you will, the joys oftravelling down the Island High-way for several hours while 10young savages direct from the blissand tranquillity of StrathconaLodge sing "100 bottles of beer onthe wall" all the way down, then upagain, as my poor van groansunder the load. Got the picture?TO TRACK MEET

Add to it that after the week inthe wild we head not for ourbeloved homes but for a two-daytrack meet in the wilderness ofVictoria.

Then, when you finally return toSalt Spring, you have just enoughtime to take a deep breath and thenbrace yourself for the sudden

onslaught as 50-plus Vernon stu-dents arrive for a week's exchange.Sound like fun?

Really though, it was all veryworthwhile. Strathcona was, asusual, an extremely educationalexperience overseen by a remark-ably professional group of leaders.Hats off to organizer Dave Chaseand his kitchen crew, Mrs.Holmes, Grandma Caldwell, Marg-uerite Lee and Sherry Hickman.FINISHED THIRD

The track meet? A great successas we finished third out of 50schools from outside Victoria. Thisin itself was remarkable as we weremissing several (10) of our out-standing athletes due to illness, exhaustion or other commitments.

There were many outstandingperformances, far too many tonote. Suffice it to say that theteachers involved were extremelypleased with the results.

And the Vernon exchange? Ledby a remarkable exchange teacherby the name of Jeffrey, who tookgreat pleasure in gulping rawoysters whole and generally dis-rupting the peaceful nature of thisisland (ask the folks at Vesuvius!)the children spent a happy weekexploring the beaches, farms andhomes on the island.

Special thanks to the Lloyds foroffering their farm; Mr. Christian-sen for the tour of the fish plant;Mr. Caldwell for making WalkerHook available; and Kathy Aker-man for imitation of Lloyd Bridges

down at Beaver Point. A specialthanks too, to the parents whooffered their homes to the Vernonchildren.SWIM PROGRAM

Speaking of Lloyd Bridges, ru-mour has it that our grade two'shave sprouted water wings underthe direction of the infamous KathyButtery as we continue the "Learnto Swim" program at the Leehomestead pool. Some 40 childrenare now learning the fine art ofstaying afloat, something thateight of them couldn't do initially.

Anything overlooked? Oh yes,the oft delayed public speakingexercise will take place Thursday,June 19. An information sheet willbe sent home with all the details.

And finally, hats off to the localprincipal and teachers who return-ed from a recent ice hockey safarisome $200 lighter thanks to arather clever thief (he looked intheir wallets). I understand it wasquite a swim home.

Next week, information on yearend closing, the primary sports dayand other assorted trivia. Untilthen keep your gumboots dry andthink winter (anything is betterthan this!)

There aremanyvarieties

BY PEARL MacALLISTERWhen we think of crabs, it's

probably Alaska king crab ordungeness in the form of a crabcocktail. However, there are manyother kinds of crab.

Some local spider crabs willdecorate themselves with smallbits of sponge or algae. They teara piece off with their pincers andstick it on their legs or back withsome mucus. Some of them get socovered with camouflage that theyare very difficult to see in theseaweed.

Local hermit crabs will attach asea anemone to the shell they areliving in. When they change shellsthey transfer the anemone to thenew shell. Another hermit crablives inside a sponge. It started inan "ordinary shell but a spongegrew on the shell and graduallydissolved it, and so the crab justkeeps the sponge for a home.UPTO10FEET

Some crabs live on land. Theyare mostly tropical crabs, and thereis even one that climbs coconuttrees and is so strong it can snip offcoconuts.

Ghost crabs inhabit tropicalbeaches. They live in burrows justabove high tide line, and sally forthat high tide to feed and scurry backto their burrows which they closeup during the day with sand. Theyare very amusing to watch as theydig out their burrows. They carry aball of sand in one pincer and tossit aside after having a look aroundto see that all is clear.

Male fiddler crabs have one verylarge claw and use it in elaboratemating rituals.

The pea crab is a very small crabthat lives in the mantle cavity ofsome clams and oysters.

These are only a small number ofthe large variety of crabs that livein the world's oceans.

Canada needs to be firm toavoid environmental damage

Artcraft details announced

Last week, I again raised in theHouse of Commons the issue of oiltanker traffic along the B.C. coast.Unfortunately, the response wasnot heartening. The Americanhearings into the oil port issuecontinue with no official Canadianinput. The Liberals are losing animportant chance to make Canadi-an concerns heard.

Canada is in grave danger ofhaving her environmental concernsover the issue ignored. Such wasthe report from two NDP collea-gues, Jim Fulton, M.P. for Skeena, and Bob Rae, M.P. for Broadview-Greenwood, who in May_met withcounterparts from the U.S. Con-gress in San Diego, California.

In their report they warned ofgrowing difficulty on several bilat-eral issues between the two na-tions. Fulton and Rae pointed outthat there has not been carry-overfrom the good feelings and grati-tude to Canada following theCanadian embassy rescue of Amer-ican diplomats in Iran.DETERMINED

Of specific concern to our ridingis the threat of increased tankertraffic transporting Alaskan oil to anew terminal in Washington State.Jim Fulton claimed that in spite ofclear dangers to the environment, und the detrimental effects onCanadian fisheries and tourism, a

Ottawareport

By JIM MANLY, MP

majority of American legislatorsseem determined to push thisthrough Congress.

Even the money available forclean-up in the event of an oil spillis woefully inadequate. Already theclean-up costs for the Gulf ofMexico blow-out have risen to $580million. For our coast the Amer-icans only set a figure of $100million when they approved theAlaska pipeline.

Recent Coast Guard studies haveindicated that the incremental ef-fect of small spills, leaks andseepage will be as destructive in thelong run as major disasters. Iron-ically, Frank Howard and TommyDouglas both pushed for a WestCoast Marine Pollution Act back in1%8 which would have given ussome protection. Neither Liberalnor Conservative governments, however, acted on this proposal.

If British Columbians wish toavoid the destruction of our coast-line, we must redouble our effortsto make the Liberal government

stand up against American oilinterests.

OTHER AREASIn addition, Fulton and Rae

pointed to four other areas whereAmerican interests are ridingrough shod over Canadian needs:the fisheries and boundaries dis-pute, acid rain, the Autopact andthe Alaska Highway pipeline.

In the east coast fisheries,Canada had made many conces-sions to Americans and negotiatorshad reached a basic agreement onthe proposed treaty. Now theAmerican senate is stalling andwants more concessions. So far,our fishermen have been honour-ing the treaty provisions but theAmericans have been exceedingtheir quotas.

It is time tor the Liberal govern-ment in Ottawa to be more forcefulin making our case known to theAmericans. We must be firm sothat future generations will not besaddled with needless environmen-tal damage simply because weallowed the Americans to ignoretheir part of the agreement reach-ed.

I would be interested in yourcomments.

Driver convicted despitelack of tests by police

A man found asleep at the wheelof his car with a glass of wine in hishand was convicted on an impair-ed driving charge last week.

Helmut E. Bentzin lost his casein provincial court in Ganges andwas fined $400.

Defense lawyer T. E. Liberty ofVancouver argued that the evi-dence of the crown could not provebeyond any reasonable doubt thathis client was guilty.

Neither breathalyzer readingsnor the results of sobriety tests hadbeen included as evidence by thecrown.

However. Const. Bernice Hoppof the Ganges RCM P testified thatB e n t z i n ' s b r e a t h smel led ofalcohol, his eyes were bloodshotand he swayed on his feet.

"His words were mumbled and itsounded like he was speaking in aforeign language." Hopp told thecourt.

Liberty declared that Bentzinhad a distinct German accent andwas mumbling because he had justbeen woken from a deep sleep.

Liberty said, "I don't believe thelaw has gotten to the state wherecircumstantial evidence alone isenough to convict a person."

He also submitted that thebreathalyzer tests were not madebecause Hopp knew the readingswould not substantiate the charge.

But Judge D. K. McAdam didnot agree. He told Liberty that theabsence of all tests was notconclusive of Bentzin's innocence."If the behaviour of the accusedconvinced an experienced policeofficer that he was intoxicated thenI must agree with her convictions,"McAdam said.

Two 12-year-old boys, JamesStevens and Derrick Harkema, areto be commended for some verysound wisdom. They discoveredabout three dozen sticks of careless-ly discarded dynamite on Tripp Rd.near St. Mary Lake. Wisely they didnot touch the dynamite, but phonedConstable Bonner. Constable Bon-ner contacted Geo. Heinekey whoblew up the discovered dynamite.Mr. Heinekey said the deteriorateddynamite was in a very dangerouscondition, and had it been picked upa serious tragedy could have occur-red. He emphasized that old dyna-mite, that has "leaked" the nitro-glycerin into one area of the stickwas apt to go off with the slightestmovement. Mr. Heinekey statedthat he is most willing to destroyany old dynamite that people mayhave laying about.

Truck destroyed after brakes fail on hillDriver of a Kenworth gravel

truck suffered only minor injurieswhen his brakes failed on GangesHill Friday.

21-year-old Peter Bantel jumpedfrom the truck seconds before itstruck a concrete barrier andplunged into the harbour next tothe Imperial Oil bulk plant. Bantelestimated that his speed was about40 mph when he leaped from thevehicle, roughly 10 feet from thebarrier.

It took a cat and two front-endloaders several hours to pUll thetruck out of the water. Bantel hadonly recently bought the vehicle, which was completely destroyed inthe accident.

It was the second time in aboutfive years that a gravel truck haslost its brakes on Ganges Hill. Onthe last occasion, the truck came torest at the top of the bank betweenMouat's store and the K & R.

Coal port proposed Packer aground on shoalsFrom Page One

Cranberry Bright District whichsurrounds Boat Harbour. Dr. KeithHammond, secretary of the Citiz-ens Steering Committee, toldDriftwood that his group is tryingto persuade the Nanaimo RegionalBoard not to rezone the uplandproperty. He said Mayo Holdingswill soon be applying for a changein zoning from residential to ind-ustrial.

He added that Premier BillBennett responded to a letter ofprotest from the steering committ-ee, stating that he was concernedabout the environment of the areabut that he was also concernedabout the economy of the province.

Hammond said that the coal dustcoming off the conveyor belts thatwould load the ships would blackenthe coastline of Stuart Channel formiles.WATER SHORTAGE

A shortage of fresh water in thedistrict, Hammond added, willmake it impossible to control thedust with water jets.

The committee is also objectingto the size of the vessels which willuse the port. The ships will have acapacity of 100,000 tons with adraft of 45 feet and a length ofapproximately 2,000 feet.

Mayo Holdings has also appliedto the provincial government formineral exploration rights in theCedar area and for rights to minecoal. There is no mining in thedistrict at present although coalwas mined in the past.

It is estimated that the coalhandling facility in Boat Harbourwould cost Mayo Holdings $50million to build and would employabout 200 people when in fulloperation.

Hammond said that British Pet-roleum, Netherlands of the Pacificand Imperial Oil are also seekingcoal rights in the Cedar district.

He noted that Boat Harbour isrelatively undeveloped now but haspotential for a marina and recrea-tional facilities.

Hammond said that Mayo Hold-ings made its plans public on May23. Since then the steering commit-tee held a public meeting whichwas attended by 250 of the approx-imately 1,200 residents of the area. The meeting, he said, voicedunanimous support for the steeringcommittee and a petition spons-ored by the group has already beensigned by 600 residents.

Hammond said he hopes toconvince the regional board toexclude any industrial develop-ment from the official communityplan now being drawn up for theCedar, Cranberry Bright District.

However, the power of theregional district to prevent such adevelopment is only marginal.

Hammond said that if the federaland provincial governments decid-ed" to go ahead then the regionalboard would be sandwiched be-tween them and the people of thearea.

A Vancouver packer receivedlittle damage after it went agroundFriday on Gossip Shoals, at theeastern end of Active Pass. TheDawn Raider went up on the rocksat about 7 pm and was pulled offagain later that evening.

Before Coast Guard vessels ar-rived on the scene, the CanadianPacific truck ferry Carrier Princessstood by while a sports fisherman

attempted to get a line to it fromthe stranded vessel. Before he wasable to do so the Mallard, stationedat Ganges, arrived, followed short-ly after by the hovercraft.

The two vessels were unable tofree the packer for about an hour, when the tide began began toflood. No damage or injuries werereported.
