It will be his first visit to the land near Mt. Tuam chosen by the Kagyu Kunkyab Chuling Buddhist Dharma Centre for its meditation retreat facilities. He and his party will be staying on the land until Sunday afternoon and further dedication ceremonies will take place there. Transporta- tion up the mountain will be provided for those wishing to attend. Kalu Rimpoche has recently arrived from France where he was conducting the first three year meditation retreat for westerners in Tibetan Buddhism. He will be staying in Vancouver for about two months. Each Tuesday and Thursday evening he gives teachings in the foundations of Buddhist meditation at the Neville Scarf Building at U.B.C. and a five day seminar is planned at the land on Salt Spring from September 1 to 5. Excitement surrounding the service is high, not just because self-employed islanders, small businesses and service club mem- bers will enjoy new freedom. The service, which becomes fully operational on August 1, following two weeks of professional training of employees, is the culmination of months of volunteer efforts by islanders. Last fall a group of parents, foster-parents and teachers of the handicapped, boarding home ope- rators and the handicapped them- selves met to discuss common concerns; employment that used the full capabilities of the physical- ly handicapped and training for the mentally handicapped. Ruth Clarkson, Bev Saunders, Wendy Coombs, Mary Lou Speed and Kathy Lightman took on the job of realizing these aims. They are to be joined later by Pamela Jay. Singlehandedly the group rais- ed funds through a quilt raffle and monthly car washes to set up a telephone answering service. Such an endeavour met the criteria of the committee: it would provide employment with which physical handicaps would not interfere in performing a quality job. It would fill a real community need. It would be self-supporting and not compete unfairly with existing island busi- nesses. Any profits in excess of expens- es and salaries would go toward establishing a training program for mentally handicapped adults many of whom have never had access to education which would provide social skills and employment prep- aration. Water wastage cost—energy and moneyBY BE VIS WALTERS(Secretary, Mallview

Water System)Few Canadians who on getting;

up of a morning, turn on their taps, realize what a great and ex-ceptional blessing they have in justhaving the water there.

Even fewer realize how luckythey are to have water that is ofgood quality and purity.

Of all the hundreds of millionsof people who share the earth welive on, less than one in every100,000 are able to turn on the tapand get water at will, and evenfewer can safely drink it withouthaving to boil it or treat it in someway.

Few nations look after itspeople's water-needs the way Can-ada does. Many nations think astand pipe at the corner or aconvenient well is good enough.Others pipe it in, but don't worryabout quality or purity, leaving theuser to cope with these problems.

SICKNESS AND DEATHAsia houses two thirds of the

world's population, but with veryfew exceptions its inhabitants (twoout of every three of the people onearth) habitually drink and wash hiwater that would bring sickness, and even death, if used byCanadians.

Canadians are among the one inevery 100,000 who enjoy purewater straight from the tap. It isonly when you have lived in othercountries that you realize what awonderful thing it is to turn on thetap and drink without asking, "Is itsafe?", "Should I boil it first?"...

Even in the great and glamorousUnited States, the people do not doas well as Canadians, water-wise.In the big cities the water bubbleswith residula detergent, whilst, across the nation, a large per-centage of the people drink coffeebecause the water is not goodenough to make tea.HIS LI FELINE

hi the old days no one had toremind the desert prospector toconserve his water, for thosecanvas water bags on his burro'sback were his life line and hisinsurance.

Today, those who have the dutyof ensuring a good and steadysupply of water go to great troubleand expense to make sure thatwhen you turn on the tap, the watercomes gushing out, and it is asgood as nature and circumstancewill permit.

Constant vigilance and the ex-penditure of many, many dollarswas the price paid to get it where itwas wanted when it was wanted.Yet, how few of us think nothing ofwasting more water every day thanthe old sourdough used in a week?ENERGY AND WATER

Air and water are the greatestaids to living and, whereas mostpersons in recent years havebecome aware of the need toprotect the air, few people, in-cluding some of the most dedicatedenvironmentalists, worry aboutwasting water.

Before water can reach the tap itmust be pumped, purified andstored, all of which is only broughtabout by the use of energy. Towaste water is to waste energy. Tosave water is to save energy.

With simple steps and common-sense hi any household, large

amounts of water can be saved, forwater conservation benefits notonly those who practice it, bat thecommunity generally. In the housesome of the most effective ways ofsaving water are: Toilets: Use themonly for what they are meant for;use the trash can for cigarette buttsand the contents of ash trays.

To save some flush water youcan weight a plastic bottle, fill itwith water and set it inside thestorage tank. This will reduce theamount of water used each flush.

Test for a leaking toilet byputting a few drops of foodcolouring in the tank. If it shows upin the bowl after a few minutes, itis leaking and needs a new rubberin the valve. Even small leaks can

Many individuals besides com-mittee members deserve recogni-tion for the help they have extend-ed.

Mr. Reynolds provided his faci-lities and equipment at the GulfStation for monthly car washes.(The next will be held Saturday,August 20.

Phil Valcourt installed 70lines for the call board and builtextra wide doors to accommodatewheel chairs at the office in theValcourt Centre. Cyril Saunders,Martin Ogilvy and Cam Cartwrightbuilt the counters and file slots inthe office. The CB club has ralliedbusiness to the car washes and willprovide a radio for monitoring tothe service. B.C. Tel has been mosthelpful in the terms with whichthey have leased equipment.

Like all small business people, the employees of the service arecontributing their time until theenterprise, which is now breakingeven, generates enough income tocover salary draws. They feel thatgood service will draw additionalbusiness. Investing their time isworth the gamble.

Not all the employees arehandicapped. Some, like singlemothers or those around retire-ment age, find some difficulty incompeting for jobs.

waste a startling amount of water.Showers: Having a shower uses

about 10 gallons a minute. You canbuy a shower flow control insertcheaply and it will save a lot ofwater. When you take a tub, potthe plug hi before turning on thetap.

Automatic clothes washers useabout 30 gallons a load. If youalways wash with a full load youwill save water and noticeablyreduce your Hydro bills.

Don't hose pathways: sweepthem!

hi the garden, water your plantsand grass: not the driveway.

Water slowly to get penetrationand reduce run-off.

Set your mower to cut high andthe taller grass will reduce evap-oration.

Water early or late and never atall on windy days. This avoids lossby evaporation. Make sure hose

connections are tight and fix holesand leaks as soon as they appear.Dig out weeds and cultivate fre-quently.

Whether your water comesfrom a well or a waterworks, ittakes energy to get it to you, sosaving water means saving energyand that's the national need.
