Education Week This week is Education Week for all New South Wales Pub- lic Schools. The 2018 theme is ‘Today’s Schools – Creating Tomorrow’s World’. Guildford’s plans for Education Week are twofold. Firstly, as a major partner in the Community of Schools CAPA Showcase (see report below) and secondly with a special Assembly scheduled for Friday morning at 9am, followed by open classrooms from 10am. Parent, car- ers, grandparents and other important friends and family are invited to then have a picnic in the playground. NAIDOC Week is also being recognised during Fri- day’s assembly while the theme ‘Because of her, we can’ provides a strong message of the vital role women play in our families and communities. Community of Schools CAPA Showcase Guildford students joined students from Merrylands High, Merrylands Public, Sherwood Grange, Granville South, Guildford West and Hilltop Road Public Schools in present- ing their creative and performing arts skills at the first Com- munity of Schools CAPA Showcase. Students from across the 7 schools created a marvelous spectacle of dance move- ment, song, drama together with an exceptional display of visual arts of which I must say Guildford students’ works were exemplary. EXCURSIONS Teachers carefully select excursions based on the value they will provide students in terms of their learning and social skills. Students must wear full school uniform on excursions and arrive to school on time or risk being excluded. Excur-sion envelopes and payment are due normally two weeks before the excursion date so the office can process payments, book transport and so the organising teacher can accurately document all aspects of the excursion. Please ensure any ex-cursion payments arrive on time. PARTNERSHIP WITH THE MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART (MCA) We have been successful in applying for a partnership with the MCA. This will involve two programs involving selected students travelling to the MCA at Circular Quay (Sydney Harbour) to work with artist to create their own art works. The Visual Arts committee will soon send home information and permission notes to nominated students. More details on the MCA can be found at https://www.mca.com.au/ BOOK FAIR Book Fair is alive and coming soon. Keep an eye on for fur-ther details especially regarding the costume parade sched-uled for 9.30am on Thursday 23rd August. PEER SUPPORT Year 6 students have their Peer Support leadership training coming up on the 21st and 22nd of August. As in previous years, Year 6 students will lead weekly sessions with 1-5 students with a focus on developing strong relationships and strong voice. Over the last term Guildford Public School has been working in partnership with the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) to provide our students with an opportunity to immerse themselves into the world of modern art. Together with the MCA, we have been working on designing programs that provide students with the opportunity to en-gage in gallery experiences. Our goal is to en-gage studio sessions, where they will be invited to connect with art and artists to share stories, create new meaning and see the world in new ways. Thanks to the generosity of MCA and LG, we have been invited to

participate in the “Lights, Camera,

Experiment!” program where they will be able to build their intellectual ca-pacity through art and technology. Through this program, our stu-dents will learn how artists use time as an art material while diving into world of technology by experimenting with video, sound, and perfor-mance. Our first to visit the MCA will be on the 6th of September 2018 at Circular Quay. Students se-lected for this amazing program will receive notes shortly. We will keep you posted on further infor-mation and our further collaboration with MCA.

Mindfulness Room

Conversations

A time to re ect on your actions & develop skills for the future. 1) How are you feeling? 2) Can you tell me why

you are here? 3) Which rule did you not

follow? 4) Why do you think? 5) What would you do

next time?

If your child is placed in the Mindfulness Room as a conse-

quence for negative behaviour it is a time

for them to reflect and to talk

about different strate-gies which we hope

will allow them to make better choices in the future. While this is a

consequence for inappropriate actions,

it is designed as a positive approach

which supports students as they learn to deal with

conflict and their own emotions.

You will be notified by your child’s teacher

if they need to attend

MUSIC BUS Information

The program is open for all students from Kindy/Prep to 6. Run‐ning weekdays at school. The Music Bus have limited availability in Singing, Keyboard, Guitar, Drum and Ukulele and so it is ad‐vised to enrol asap.    The Music Bus is a wonderful music program that many of our students are already enjoying – a brilliant and cost‐effective way for students to get fun and specialist music lessons without parents having to travel all over the area after school. Cost of lessons is only $16 per week (Drums $18).

If you’re interested in your child having music lessons through The Music Bus, check out their website at www.themusicbus.com.au or call 1300 168 742
