Disneyland was built on reclaimed land on Penny’s bay, Lantau Island. The theme Park took 2 years to build; they started building Disney on January 12th 2003 and opened for the public September 12th 2005. In total it took 2 years and 12 months to build the park, which is still the shortest time it has taken to build a Disneyland. Hong Kong Disneyland is the smallest Disneyland in the world.

Disneyland is a pretty big park and only about a quarter of it is not man-made, this would be the trees. The rest of the park is made up of rides and man-made structures such as the shops in main-street and theatres where they have the shows. The rides and shows have been created for the enjoyment for the visitors of the park. Also a lot of work went into the making sure that the rides where fun and save for the visitors.

Lets start in Fantasyland the main and largest attraction in the park. All of the rides were man-made with materials and technologies that had to be perfected to be safe for the visitors of the park. Also the theatres in which the shows are held are man-made have all been made so a large capacity of people can fit into the theatre and watch the show.

In the Tomorrowland the rides and theatres are also mad-made and are made to ensure that the visitors have fun in the park. There is also a restaurant in this part of the park for the visitors so they can have a meal if they happen to be hungry. Everything in the restaurant is man-made the chairs, tables, cutlery and kitchen. The food of course is not man-made in that sense.

In Adventureland the aren’t really rides its more of an adventure cruise on a man-made lake around Tarzan island which is also man-made. You can go visit the island when you get on a man-made raft to go explore the legendary island of Tarzan and Jane. There is also the theatre where they perform the Lion King, which is also man-made.

Disneyland has four parts Main Street USA, Fantasyland, Tomorrowland and Adventureland. It has been announced that by 2014 three more lands will be added to the Park, Toy Story Land, Mystic Point and Grizzly Gulch.

Hong Kong Disneyland Map

Hong Kong Disneyland, the most magical hangout spot in Hong Kong, the perfect place for spending the afternoon with friends. And if you live in Discovery Bay, it takes less than an hour to get there; how convenient is that? Hong Kong Disneyland happens to be the smallest Disneyland resort in the world, so even if you donʼt want to spend more more than one afternoon there, youʼll have no problem with getting on every single attraction before you leave the park. Though this of course all depends on what day you go, you donʼt want to be going on a very busy public holiday, because then you might be spending the whole afternoon in line for space mountain.

Other than a nice quiet day to visit Disney, youʼll also be needing the park map. You can find a stand full of them at the entrance. Otherwise ask any staff member and theyʼll gladly give you one or point a stand out to you. You can always count on the staff in Disney to be very kind and helpful, and if you are the kind of person who likes stickers youʼll be delighted to know that each member of the staff has a bag full of them (even the cleaners)! So now that you have a map (and possibly a bunch of stickers), you can start looking at where you might want to go.

On the map, youʼll see that there are letters and numbers sprinkled all across the map. Numbers symbolise attractions and letters stand for restaurants and refreshments. Shops arenʼt marked on the map, but the legend explains where they are located through relative location.

Besides numbers and letters, there are more than 20 other symbols on the map that you might want to remember. In the legend you can read what each of them mean. This map is especially handy when you are looking for a toilet, since youʼll find that there are two in main street and two in fantasy land, there is one in adventureland and there are three in tomorrowland. They have taken disability into consideration, and have stroller and wheelchair rentals in Main Street. The map shows you wether someone may remain in their wheelchair or whether they must transfer from their chair to experience the attractions, though there are also a few rides that require people to walk through.

In the middle of the map above the entrance is main street, U.S.A. Main street is the perfect place to do your Disneyland souvenir shopping. There is (of course) a souvenir shop that has just about everything, a sweets shop, jewellery shop, photo shop and even a crystal shop. There are three restaurants; plaza Inn, main street corner cafe and market house bakery. Main street is also the centre of transportation, there are a range of main street vehicles available, and a railroad station where you can get a grand circle tour of Hong Kong Disneyland. The dotted line down the middle of main street shows the route of the parade. If you are planning on watching it, it is advised to look for a spot around 10 to 15 minutes before the show, or you wonʼt be seeing much of it.

Up ahead and through the lovely princess castle we have fantasyland. With the most attractions, fantasyland bursts of magic and excitement. Get blown away by the 4D Mickey Philharmagic show, fly sky-high with dumbo the flying elephant, find your inner princess in the Cinderella carousal, wish away in Snow Whiteʼs grotto, go crazy in the mad hatterʼs tea cups, dive into one of Winnie the Poohʼs many adventures, or watch your

favourite Disney songs and characters in the one and only Golden Mickeys show. And of course, who can forget, in the fantasy gardens you get to meet all your favourite characters in person, and take a picture to savour the moment, they can even sign it if you want. There are two restaurants and three shops. The shops include a book shop, a winnie the pooh and merlin souvenir shop.

On the very right side of Disney there is Tomorrowland, the land of the future. It may only feature 4 rides, but two of them may very well be the most popular in all the park. Of course there is the one and only space mountain, the roller coaster that takes you in an adventure through space. Then we have Buzz Lightyear astro blasters, where you take a journey to infinity and beyond as you save the universe from the evil emperor zurg... not that you do much except for shooting little red lazers at random targets, but it is still loads of fun! Other activities are orbitron and autopia. Further more there are two restaurants and two shops. Both shops are found at the exit of a ride.

Disneyland,  we  all  know  where  it  is  but  not  many  of  us  know  what  was  there  before  hand.  Around  Disneyland  are  mountains,  so  does  that  mean  they  had  to  destroy  mountains  or  rivers  to  actually  build  Disneyland.  The  truth  is  that  Disneyland  was  built  with  a  mix  of  Chinese  traditions  and  Disneyland  traditions.  The  Hong  Kong  Disneyland  followed  the  Chinese  rules  of  “Feng  shui”.  So  within  Disneyland  are  certain  areas  of  Disneyland  in  particular  places  for  example  the  Main  gate  of  Disneyland  is  facing  North  east  for  good  luck,  that  is  one  of  the  rules  of  Feng  shui.  The  actual  park  of  Disneyland  was  meant  to  be  a  lot  bigger,  than  it  actually  is  so  they  are  slowly  expanding  it,  everyone  in  the  community  is  very  happy  about  this  progress  but  what  is  it  doing  to  the  land  for  Disneyland  is  already  built  on  reclaimed  land.  The  park  is  310  acres  and  the  resort  has  210  of  those  acres.    The  Government  had  to  take  out  a  huge  land  reclamation  to  actually  build  Disneyland,  as  I  slightly  mentioned  before.  The  small  size  is  a  huge  disadvantage  of  Disneyland  for  that  means  that  the  customers  have  to  wait  in  long  lines,  wait  for  ages  and  there  aren’t  that  many  attractions  or  rides  for  paying  customers  to  go  on.  Financially  the  park  is  a  success  but  people  do  not  want  to  go  back  to  Disneyland  for  they  say  that  the  lines  are  to  long  and  there  aren’t  enough  rides  or  attractions  to  keep  them  entertained.  So  now  Disneyland  is  adding  three  additional  “lands”  Toy  story  land,  grizzly  gulch  and  mystic  point.  Disneyland  co-‐operation  is  hoping  that  the  additional  lands  are  hoping  that  this  will  make  more  people  will  come  to  Disneyland.  To  add  the  lands  there  is  saying  that  this  will  lead  to  people  getting  laid  off.  Due  to  construction  builds  ETC.  But  after  the  lands  are  built  they  will  be  rehiring  again  to  man  the  stalls  rides  ETC.

Hong Kong Disneyland is a place where anyone any age enjoy the most magical experiences. Being 5th magic kingdom style park, Hong Kong Disneyland is the most recently opened Disney resort yet.

A lot of the magical feeling you get as soon as you set foot in Disney comes from the atmosphere they have created. It isnʼt just in the obvious things, such as the castle in Fantasyland or the Tarzan tree in Adventureland, the little details do the trick; like how there is music everywhere you go or how when you look really carefully, almost every shop, dish, house, or lamp has a hidden mickey in it. Itʼs when you notice those little details, that you feel like your a little kid again, getting all excited about the most random things. Even before you get to the actual park, you get into the mood of Disney. That is, if you take the MTR. It has sparkly blue couches, Mickey Mouse shaped windows and little statues of your favourite Disney characters all over the place. How could you not get excited about that? The walk way to the park is also filled with Disney atmosphere, they will often be playing instrumental versions of famous Disney songs to get you in the Disney mood.

When you enter the park you walk straight into Mainstreet U.S.A. Everything there looks really big, bold and colourful, like everything around you comes straight from a cartoon. It really helps create that surrealistic environment. There are plenty of shops, which is smart because though you enter through Mainstreet, you must also walk through it to exit the park. It is at this point most people decide to do their last-minute souvenir shopping.

Then there is the town square (well, circle really) that links all the lands together (and if there is no High School Musical parade) you can walk through Sleeping Beautyʼs castle to Fantasyland. Fantasyland is the more girly of the three lands, it is the place where every girl meets her inner princess. Okay... Maybe every girl until the age of 10. Still the atmosphere is magical. The colour scheme mostly consists of pinks and purples, but there is also a lot of sky blue, light yellow and green. Most buildings and rides have very swirly or fancy patterns, and the restaurants follow the mid-evil theme that the castle creates. They say that Disneyland is where dreams come true, and the wishing-well and fantasy gardens really support that statement.

Page 11: Guide to Hong Kong Disneyland

Now the second land (that you might actually enter first due to the short-cut leading to right after Mainstreet), is Tomorrowland. This land has a more spacey, futuristic theme. Thereʼs always alien, computer noises and music playing, and the colour theme consists of contrasting colours. There is a lot of blue and orange, yellow and purple, red and most of all; silver. This is the land where every kid can be a space ranger alongside the one and only Buzz Lightyear! It is also the home of the one and only space mountain!

Last but not least we have Adventureland full of greenery and wood. It has a very tropical, tribal feel to it. There is a Tiki type of music, and animal noises from the speakers hidden in the bushes. The land is mostly green and brown, but there are some colourful parts to it also. The atmosphere is very wild, and you donʼt really feel like youʼre in Hong Kong anymore.

Disneyland started as a way of bringing Walt Disneyʼs stories to life and let people around the world experience the magic from the movies first-hand. These resorts are purely for fun, enjoyment and inspiration:

"From the beginning, starting with Walt Disney, we have had five things that make me proud to be part of this Company: high-quality products, optimism for the future, great storytelling, an emphasis on family entertainment and great talent, passion and dedication from our Cast Members.”

- Marty SklarVice Chairman and Principal Creative Executive

Walt Disney Imagineering

The company values innovation, they care about their products being of high quality standard. They strive to create positive and inclusive ideas about families and aim their entertainment and experiences at all ages and generations. Their culture is all about telling stories through their products, and their entertainments revolves around hope, aspiration and positive resolutions. It is a very optimistic company. They honour and respect the trust that people place in them.

Page 12: Guide to Hong Kong Disneyland

Hong Kong Disneyland is just a new place where we can experience this lovely culture. Though at the moment it is the smallest Disney resort in the world, it is already continuing to grow. They are currently working on three new parts to the park:

“To all who come to this happy place, welcome. Many years ago, Walt Disney introduced the world to enchanted realms of fantasy and adventure, yesterday and tomorrow, in a magical place called Disneyland. Today that spirit of imagination and discovery comes to life in Hong Kong.Hong Kong Disneyland is dedicated to the young and the young at heart - with the hope that it will be a source of joy and inspiration, and an enduring symbol of the cooperation, friendship and understanding between the people of Hong Kong and the United States of America.”

- Michael D. Eisner and Donald TsangCurrent Chief Executive and President of the Executive Council of the Government of Hong Kong)

All of the Disneyland resorts have just about the same aim and culture. Except Hong Kong Disneyland has one thing that none of the others have... Chinese culture. Hong Kong Disneyland has tried to keep alive the Chinese culture by being laid out according to Feng Shui. Disney Imagineers consulted a Feng Shui master in planning and building Hong Kong Disneyland. Various earthly elements such as wood, fire, earth, metal and water important in Feng Shui have been carefully balanced throughout the Hong Kong Disneyland Resort according to the rules of Feng Shui. For example, projections of a rolling fire in one restaurant bar enhances the fire element at that location, while fire is prohibited in other areas. Hong Kong Disneyland's main gate and entrance was positioned in a north/south direction for good luck based on the ancient Chinese art of Feng Shui. There are many more Feng Shui facts about Hong Kong Disneyland. Furthermore Hong Kong Disneyland also celebrates Chinese festivals such as Chinese new year.

For Disneyland's future they plan to add three more lands, grizzly gulch, toy story land and mystic point. The environment around Disneyland consists of mountains, roads, park and a bay. So to add in these three additions to Disneyland some people are against it for they will need to destroy most of the surrounding area. Plus the carbon emission from the construction machines will add to global warming and the growing concern of green house emissions. The environmental layout around Disneyland is good because people can enjoy the scenery while having a nice day out with their families and friends. With the growing amount of people in Hong Kong and the growing success of Disneyland the park is expected to expand some more so to expand they will have to destroy some of the surrounding area, and may ruin the most famous point of Hong Kong Disneyland, which the people of Hong Kong is not a thing to be proud of for Hong Kong Disneyland is famous for is their size and how Hong Kong Disneyland is the smallest in the world. If Disneyland continues to expand it may have dire consequences on the environment.

Disneyland: Human Environmental Interaction.

Page 14: Guide to Hong Kong Disneyland

My group and I are in favor of Disneyland adding the three more lands, for we think that adding the three more lands will lead to more tourists, and people going to Disneyland which would be a good thing for Disneyland. Adding the three extra lands will lead to recurring visitors and hopefully the rides are aimed at a higher age level for at the moment all of the rides are aimed at 10 and under kids, so for the older kids it is hard to find at least one ride to go on and actually enjoy. Also we believe that right now the rides are somewhat childish and boring also the other attractions get old after awhile and the new section to Disneyland will make the park more enjoyable and worthwhile for the money you would give out to go the park.

hong kong disneyland’s future

I am in favour of Hong Kong Disneylandʼs plans for expansion. There have been a lot of complaints about the small size of Hong Kong Disneyland. So I really believe this development will benefit them. Now, not only will this attract new visitors, but also the people who have been there before will want to come back for fun new experiences. There will be all sorts of fun new rides that will now appeal to a complete different age group. At the moment Hong Kong Disneyland seems to be very much aimed at younger children; other than space mountain, there are not many attractions that appeal to teenagers. I think that the more exciting new rides that come with the new lands –such as the Big Grizzly Mountain rollercoaster, the RC Racer half-pipe ride or the parachute drop attraction– will attract more people of our age group. I also really like the the theme of mystic point. This way you donʼt have to wait until halloween for a haunted Disney house! There are definitely some down-sides to the new lands. It will make the park more crowded and stuffy than it already is, in fact Hong Kong Disneyland hopes that their big expansion plans will be enough to increase attendance at the theme park by 60% by 2015, bringing in around 7.3 million visitors. Also their environmental footprint will increase. Even though Hong Kong Disneyland has invested a whole lot of money into the expansion, they expect that it will pay off. Overall I support their plans for the future and hope that they will be very succesfull.

Hong Kong Disneyland definitely had big plans for the futures. In fact, the are already on well their way! At the moment they are constructing three new lands, all located on the left side of the park. With the addition of more than 30 new attractions, play and entertainment experiences, Hong Kong Disneylandʼs total number of rides and attractions will increase by almost 50 percent. These lands will increase Hong Kong Disneylands size by approximately 23 percent. This should take care of all those complaints of Hong Kong Disneyland being too small... For the meanwhile.

My Opinion

Plans for the future

By Samantha van den Esschert

Page 16: Guide to Hong Kong Disneyland

A lot of the other Disney Resorts have a land called Frontierland, Hong

Kongʼs Disneyland does not have one of these, but instead they are now constructing a similar land called “Grizzly Gulch”. The story of this trail was that the town was founded August 8, 1888 – the luckiest day of the luckiest month of the luckiest year – by prospectors looking to discover gold. Bears have now started causing havoc at the Big Grizzly Mountain Mining Company. Set amidst mountains and woods, Grizzly Gulch offers many more rides that are sure to attract new visitors. Guests will be experiencing hands-on water features, massive geysers and quite a few leaking structures in this abandoned town. Of course there will be the Big Grizzly Mountain Coaster, an adventure aboard a runaway mine train through the whole town. Within this new roller coaster there will be Life-size Audio-Animatronic® bears, it will move backward down an incline

that propels through twists and turns, before a launch sequence “blasts” the mine train

out of the mountain. Does that sound like fun or what?

The first of the three lands to open is Toy

Story land, it will be opening in fall 2011. This new land is going to be nearly identical to the land announced for Walt Disney Studios Paris. Obviously it is themed after the Disney•Pixar Toy Story films that we all love. This is the world of Andy, a little boy whoʼs toys come to life when left unattended. Everything in this land is ginormous, even the grass (which will be made out of bamboo and surrounding the area). This way you get to experience what it is like to be shrunk down to the size of a toy! It will feature some really awesome attractions such as a half pipe roller coaster, a parachute drop and spinning slinky dog ride. There will also be loads of photo spots next to giant toys.

Mystic Point is the site of mysterious forces and supernatural events in the heart of a dense, uncharted rain forest. Basically it has this gloomy haunted theme, it has a beautiful garden full of relics and mythological figures, where guests discover a hidden world of illusions and mysteries that trick the eye. The main ride of this land is Mystic Manor, a haunted house with a trackless ride system enables vehicles to move “freely” about the attraction as the story unfolds. Audio-Animatronic® figures and special visual and audio effects help tell the story of mystical phenomena. The story of this haunted house is of an eccentric world traveler and adventurer and his collection of exotic international artifacts, strange things are afoot as an enchanted music box releases its magical powers, thanks to a mischievous monkey. This of course means that all the different rooms will have a different theme from a different place from in a different time.
