If you love being immersed in the tranquillity and uncontaminatedplaces of the mountains, in landscapes far from the frenetic rhythms of daily life, then alpine huts are the perfect place.

Friuli Venezia Giulia’s moun-tains, from west to east, go from the Friulan Dolomites,

that contain a fascinating Park; the Carnic Alps, between deep valleys and grandiose rock walls; up to the most wild Julian Alps, are served by a dense network of structures that are able to offer hospitality and refreshments at high-altitude.A landscape perfect for those who love hiking, the Friulan mountain is embellished by a dense network of well marked trails and the presence of numerous rest areas surrounded by spectacular mountains chains for extraordinary climbs or simple pano-

ramic journeys. Here, through a series of interesting activities in specially equipped education centres, the Alps become a perfect locations to teach people about the natural environment and on how to become closer to the mountainous world.Comfortable trails that wind their way through thick forests and striking peaks, allow hikers to reach the splen-did alpine huts within a few hours of walking and offer warm hospitality and the needed services. What is bet-ter then sitting at a table in an alpine hut and tasting local dishes, expres-sions of a simple and genuine cuisine after a day’s hike?

HIGH ALTITUDE EXPERIENCE

Also the alpine huts made accessible only through the harder trails offer rest not only in comfortable rooms, but also the opportunity to taste the foods of the local traditions. Here mush-rooms, frico and polenta have their own special taste: an unmistakable and rich taste able to nourish even the most capable of hikers. And to choose the best hikes, one can look to the travel logs of the great al-pinists: these high altitude structures become libraries made richer through a great variety of books, magazines, maps and photographs of the surrounding mountains, and where sometimes even music is given a special venues.

Maybe not everyone is aware that the world’s longest alpine itinerary passes also through the mountains of Friuli Venezia Giulia. The Via Alpine, the grandiose trail that starts in Trieste, passes through Trieste’s Carso, the majestic Julian and Carnic Alps be-fore crossing the alpine landscapes of the Friulan Dolomites. It winds its way through enchanting landscapes of mountain walls, alpine pastures, al-pine huts and enchanting hamlets

Unless otherwise noted, the alpine huts are open from the second Sunday of June

to the second Sunday of September.

It is possible to reach almost all of the structures through hiking trai-ls reachable with normal mountain clothing. To spend the night in the huts you need to have a sleeping bag which is available also through the huts themselves.

HOW TO GET THERE: from Cimolais (651 m) you rise through the Cimolais Valley with the secondary road (not always easily pass-able) following the Cimoliana stream. After 13 km you reach Pian Meluzzo; at the junc-tion for the Meluzzo Valley (signed with “no access”), you must park and then continue towards the left. After a few turns you join the trail and in 10 minutes reach the Alpine Hut.

LOCATION: the Alpine Hut is located in a beautiful wooded outlook in the meet-ing point of the Montanaia Valley and the

Meluzzo Valley, and the base of Cima Me-luzzo.

The Campanile di Val Montanaia,in the middle of Friulan Dolomites, is the unquestionable symbol of the Friulan Dolomites, a pinnacle

of spectacular beauty and wildness, unique among its kind in that it stands solitary in the sky.The Friulan Dolomites’ landscape is rich with surprises, marked by long and narrow valleys, has always been a favoured by alpinists, hikers and simple nature lovers. The towers and pinnacles of this area, thea-tre to legendary alpine feats, are a real and natural gym for those who love summit-ing vertical faces using perfectly equipped itineraries.It is among these peaks that the largest pro-tected area in Friuli Venezia extend itself: the Park of the Friulan Dolomites, a treas-ure chest of cliffs and prairies adorned by a myriad of orchids and Edelweiss, where it is easy to run into a chamois, roe deer, marmots and grouse, or to encounter the fl ight of the majestic Golden Eagle by look-ing towards the Dolomite pinnacles.

HOW TO GET THERE: from Erto you fol-low the state road towards Longarone. Af-ter the junction with Casso to the left you follow a road on the left that takes you to Pineda through Frana del Monte Toc. Right before Pineda you take a left on the forest road (follow the signs for “Casera Ditta - Sentiero 905”) that after a few steep spots will become a comfortable gravel road. This will take you through beech forests and two brief landslides. After the bridge over the Mesaz stream you’ll reach the Alpine Hut.

LOCATION: located in a spectacular am-phitheatre of the Valley dominated by the majestic peaks of the Monte Toc, Croda Bi-anca, Cimon di Valbona, Cime di Pino and Col Nudo.

HOW TO GET THERE: from Erto you take the Val Zemola road that is open to cars up to the Casera di Mela. Before the Casera a forest road branches out and you follow this to a second junction. You follow this to the right until getting to the Pian di Mandriz (1203 m) where the gravel road ends and the trail be-gins (marked CAI 374). Cross the G di Pezzi Stream and go uphill through the forest for 1.5 hours until reaching the Alpine Hut. Attention: For those who plan on spending the night in the Alpine Hut you can pass with your car past Casera Mela towards Casera Ferrera to-wards the area of the Casera Pezzei (permit

given at the Alpine Hut in order to avoid tick-ets on the return). From here 20 minutes.

LOCATION: the Alpine Hut is located in the Val Bozzia on a green plateau at the base of Monte Duranno. The Alpine Hut looks towards the Zemola Valley, Monte Toc, and the Belluno plains all the way towards Col Visentin.

HOW TO GET THERE: near Claut (577 m) you take the road that follows the Torrente Settimana and after roughly 13 km you get to the Lodge’s parking lot (930 m). The road is closed due to snow in the winter months and in the Spring it is often interrupted by avalanche debris. The Lodge is also acces-sible from Forni di Sotto with trail 364 (fairly long walk).

LOCATION: the Lodge is located at the end of Settimana Valley and the confl uence of the Sensons Stream with the Stuet River on a green pasture surrounded by fi r and beech forest near a sulphur spring.

HOW TO GET THERE: from Andrazza (885 m) you reach the bridge over the Tagliamen-to River in the hamlet of Piazzaretta (where you park in the parking lot); pass the bridge rise up on the gravel road (CAI trail 362) until you get to the road coming from Forni di Sopra; follow this on the left to the end of the road (picnic area), here you get back on CAI trail 362 through a forest and then on to an open gravel area that rises the Suola Val-ley until the Alpine Hut (2.5 hours).

LOCATION: the Alpine Hut is located on a green area at the northwest base of Cima di Suola.

HOW TO GET THERE: reachable follow-ing the road in the hamlet of Chiandarens in Forni di Sopra (962 m). The road is as-phalted in the fi rst section and then becomes gravel up until the bridge over the Torrente Giaf. After you park the car follow the for-est road and taking CAI trail 316 at 1107 m; cross a few streams and in 1.5 hours from the parking lot you get to the Alpine Hut.

LOCATION: the Alpine Hut rises over a for-ested area at the base of the Coston di Giaf in the Giaf Valley. The surrounding area is typical of the Dolomites with jaggy peaks

and bold, bare and smooth towers that con-trast against the green forests at the gentle slopes at their base.

HOW TO GET THERE: the Lodge is located along the gravel road of 1 km that is found between km 7 and 8 of the State Road 552 to-wards Passo Rest that connects Val Tramon-tina to Ampezzo. To get there by foot you can take CAI trail 80 from Casera della Porta to Socchieve; to Casera della Forca, 1425 m (Nature Trail “Ursula Nagle”, Casera Monte Rest 1501 m, Passo Monte Rest 1060 m); da Casera della Porta a Socchieve o Preone (to-wards Malga di Pezzeit, CAI trail 802, 802); rise to Monte Valcada, 1908 m (Passo Rest towards Ricovero Casera Sopareit, CAI trail

CARNIC PROFILE

The Carnic Alps reveal themselves as a bitter and wild environment, ideal location for those who love uncontaminated mountains with

lots of opportunities for both expert hikers to the less experienced. It is in this Range that Friuli Venezia Giulia’s highest peak rises, the grandiose Massif of the Monte Coglians, from whose peak you can see a wonderful peak of all of Carnia. A series of well-equipped Alpine Huts allows one to go easily use the many well-marked trails and are base camp to two high-alti-tude itineraries of extraordinary beauty; the Carnia Traverse and the Alta Via delle Alpi Carniche.The Tita Piaz Alpine Hut, at the base of Monte Tinsia, is the starting area for splen-did excursions that captures the essence of the Carnic Alps. It is a natural history lesson of the highest calibre thanks to the infor-mation signs that explain the trail and its rarities. The equipped trail also offers the blind the opportunity to have a one-of-a-kind experience.

HOW TO GET THERE: from Sauris fol-low the road along the invaso del Lumiei towards the end of the lake; at the valley mouth turn right towards the Passo del Pura and the Lodge. From the State Road Carnia 52, between Ampezzo and Forni di Sotto, take the scenic road to the right (reaching Ampezzo) that reaches the Passo del Pura and directly afterwards the Lodge.

LOCATION: the Lodge is located in a beauti-ful position in the Passo Pura area, between the Nauleni and Tinisuta mountains, on the road that connects Sauris to Ampezzo.

HOW TO GET THERE: from Moggio take the road along the Valle Aupa for 8.5 km until the Osteria di Bevorchians where you take a left on a paved road to the hamlet of “Case Nanghets” (714 m). From here follow the CAI trail 437 and in 1.5 hours walk with roughly 500 m of rise. The new structure will be inaugurated in the summer of 2007.

LOCATION: the Alpine Hut is located at the head of the sunny Rio Flop Valley on a small spot between beeches at the foot of the

powerful and vertical northern walls of the Cima di Gjai and the Creta Grauzaria.

HOW TO GET THERE: from Tolazzi Lodge you continue along the road that fl anks the Rio Morareet and in roughly 2 hours you get to the Marinelli Alpine Hut. From the state road that comes from Passo Monte Croce Carnico, little before the pass and right af-ter a tunnel, you park the car and take the rough road to the left. You instantly come to a junction: both roads take to the Marinelli, but it is best to take CAI trail 146 of the Carnic Traverse. The road instantly becomes a trail and in 2.5 hours you get the Alpine Hut. Al-ternative route from the Passo di Monte Croce Carnico on CAI trail 146 takes you there in 3

hours by using a equipped ladder, the Monu-menz, and the Plotta Pond.

LOCATION: the Alpine Hut is located on the southern slopes of the Monte Coglians near Forcella Moraretto in a dominating and spectacular position thanks to its splendid panorama.

HOW TO GET THERE: from the hamlet of Timau you take CAI trail 402 that rises rapidly on the southern slopes of the Creta Timau. You reach a narrow road and even-tually the Lodge (2 hours). From Cleulis in the hamlet of Laipacco (always in the But Valley, a few km before Timau), the Lodge is accessible also using appropriate vehicles or by CAI trail 403 (3 hours).

LOCATION: the alpine pasture area is situ-ated in the Town of Paluzza in a beautiful grassy amphitheatre south of the Pramosio

Pass on the south-eastern slopes of the Creta di Timau rich in First World War history.

HOW TO GET THERE: from Sostasio, take the road, at fi rst paved then gravel, that takes you to the hamlet of Lùc where you continue by foot for roughly 4 km (1 hours). From Prato Carnico you go to the hamlet of Còi. Near the aqueduct, at the top of the hamlet, follow CAI trail 218 that takes you to a steep forest towards the end-point (1 hour).

LOCATION: the Alpine Lodge is located on the forested slopes of Monte Talm and is im-mersed in the forests of red fi r and beech. The modest altitude and the dominating position in the Pesarina Valley and Ovaro Bowl make Monte Talm an extremely beau-tiful panorama.

HOW TO GET THERE: reachable using the asphalted road both from Val d’Incarojo, 14 km from Paularo, and from Pontebba in 15 km.

LOCATION: the Alpine Pasture and Barns complex, together with the Alpine Lodge, is situated in the Cason di Lanza Pass that connects the Pontebba Valley to the Incarojo Valley. Besides serving its purpose as a tech-

nologically evolved alpine pasture, the Al-pine Hut is in the perfect location to be base for numerous mountaineering and hiking itineraries on the Italian- Austrian border.

HOW TO GET THERE: in Val Pesarina from the Bar Centro Fondo, a cross-country ski lodge (parking lot at 1236 m) take CAI trail 201 for a vertical rise of 550 m in 2 hours. From the state road of Forcella Lavardeet after Pian di Casa hamlet (1423 m), take the forest road to Malga Mimojas (1623 m) and from here CAI trails 201 and 203 to the Al-pine Hut in 2 hours. From Sappada, leave from Granvilla on CAI trail 316 and at the Piave River you cross through the Siéra pass (3.5 hours)

LOCATION: the Alpine Hut is located on the Carnic side of the Pesarine Dolomites between the forest and rock walls that look like an imposing crown of towers and spires.

HOW TO GET THERE: from Rigolato: go through the hamlet of Ludaria until you get to Piani di Vas (1350 m, ample parking). Continue by foot along the forest road or take the CAI trail 228a (45 minutes) or 228 (1 hour) until you get to the Alpine Lodge. From Forni Avoltri: at the Malga Tuglia take CAI trail 229 and then CAI trail 227 for roughly 2 hours. From Cima Sappada: go through Malga Tuglia on CAI trails 320 - 230 - 227 for roughly 2.5 hours.

LOCATION: the Alpine Lodge is splendidly panoramic position at the foot of the Monte

Pleros Solomite Range - Creta della Fuina - Monte Cimon. The view takes in the most important Carnic and Friulan peaks that are seen behind the green forests and ample pas-tures of the “Piani di Vas”. From West to East, in order, you will see the Peralba Mountain, the Giogaia dei Fleons, the Volaia mountains, the Coglians - Chiavenate Range and the Ju-lian Alps in the distance.

HOW TO GET THERE: the Alpine Lodge is reachable with two roads that are both cur-rently closed to vehicular traffi c. From the hamlet of Latèis in Sauris follow the road for 9 km (2.5 hours by foot, 490 m vertical rise). Be aware that the CAI trail 220 is not being maintained. From Ovaro go through the hamlet of Mione for 12 km. It is advised that you call the Alpine Lodge beforehand to fi nd out the status of the two roads and on their status for road traffi c. A normal car can usually drive on the road from Sauris

with some care, while toe road from Ovaro is sometimes unpassable.

LOCATION: situated between a multitude of Alpine Pastures that fl ank the Pesarina Valley, the Casera Losa fi nds itself in a pano-ramic position on an ample and sunny slope of the Sauris plateau.

HOW TO GET THERE: from Sella Nevea you reach the steep road that takes to the Montasio Plateau. At the end of the road (1502 m), follow the CAI trail 622 and in roughly 30 minutes you reach the Alpine Hut.

LOCATION: the Alpine Hut is located on the Montasio Plateau, above a grassy area and under the cliffs of Buinz. The position allows for a splendid and vast view on the Canin Range and the Julian Alps of the Ital-ian- Slovenian border.

HOW TO GET THERE: 1) from Valle Rio del Lago a 984 m, follow the forest road that takes you to Malga Grantagar and then fol-low the CAI trail 628 – 625 underneath the Parete delle Gocce. You’ll get to the Alpine Hut after 2.5 hours. 2) From Sella Nevea, follow CAI trail 625 to Malga Cregnadul di Sopra and Passo degli Scalini where you will pass under the Parere dell Gocce and the Lago di Villacco. You get to the Alpine Hut after 3 hours.

LOCATION: the Alpine Hut is located on a beautiful grassy terrace on the middle of an

uncontaminated amphitheatre made up of the southern wall of the Jof Fuart, Madri dei Camosci and Cima di Riofredda. You have a beautiful vista of the Canin Range.

HOW TO GET THERE: the Alpine Hut is 15 minutes from the top of the tram that rises from Sella Nevea. It can be reached by foot with a two hour walk on CAI trail 635 that in the summer times follows the ski trail.

LOCATION: The Alpine Hut is located in the centre of the Valon di Prevala, between the Sella Valon di Prevala and Sella Bila Pec in the Monte Canin Range. Together with Monte Forato and all’Ursic, these mountains

form the long calcareous wall that acts as a border with Slovenia.

HOW TO GET THERE: 1) From Dogna, take the asphalted road up the Val Dogna Valley for 18 km to Sella di Sompdogna. When the road ends, continue on the trail for 10 minutes to the Alpine Hut. 2) From the Valbruna highway exit follow the road to Malga Saisara, From here continue on foot along the forest road which becomes a trail (marked CAI 611) and in an hours walk and 400 m of rise among white and red fi r for-ests, you get to the Alpine Hut.

LOCATION: the Alpine Hut is located in the middle of a forest east of Sella di Sompdogna near the Sella di Sompdogna Pond. Offers a beautiful panorama on the northern face of the Montasio and on the western fl anks of the Jof Fuart and Nabois.

LOCATION: the Alpine Hut, surrounded by forest, is located on the western face of the Ponza Grande in the beautiful amphitheatre

formed by the Ponze, Veunza and Mangart that close the protected Fusine area.

HOW TO GET THERE: from Valbruna with the Monte Lussari tram you get there in 15 minutes (to fi nd out the hours of operation call the Tarvisiano Tourist Association at 0428-2135). From Val Saisero (870 m) take the forest road for 3 hours. From Campo-rosso take the “Via Crucis” trail that takes 2 hours. From Tarvisio take the forest road and trail that follows the Tarvisio Alps High Route.

LOCATION: the Alpine Lodge is part of the small nucleus of buildings around the

Mariano di Lussari Sanctuary that dominates the suggestive Canale Valley with beautiful views of the Gail Valley, the Carnic Alps, the Cima Cacciatori, Jof Fuart and Montasio Ranges.

HOW TO GET THERE: from Valbruna go roughly 2.5 km on the Val Saisera road to 860 m. A closed road crosses the Saisera Stream, a trail up to the tram and then be-comes steep under the cliff walls. After pass-ing the left turn to Sella Prasnigm you reach a rocky area and cross over some gravel slides. After the last few turns that cross over a few springs, you reach the Alpine Hut. Cai trail 616, 2.5 hours.

LOCATION: the Alpine Hut is located on the fl anks of the Carnizza di Camporosso (or Rio Zapraha). It is surrounded by the walls of the Cime delle Rondini, Cime Vergini, Madri dei Camosci and the visible north-eastern face of the Jof Fuart.

HOW TO GET THERE: From the Pelizzo Alpine Hut, it takes 35 minutes by foot. The Alpine Hut is reachable by car from Cividale del Friuli by going towards the Valle del Na-tisone towards Ponte San Quirino and then going towards Savogna along the Alberone Valley towards Masseris and the Alpine Hut. Well-marked signs from the valley fl oor on up take you in the direction. By foot from Masseris, CAI trail 736A, 2.5 hours; from Cepletischis, CAI trail 736, 3 hours and 15 minutes; from Stupizza, CAI trail 725, 3.5 hours.

beautiful and panoramic position that looks across the Friulan plains to the Sea. From the peak of the Matajur, border between Italy and Slovenia, you can see a beautiful view of the Julian Alps and the Isonzo Valley and the Clautane Dolomites and Zoldane.

HOW TO GET THERE: by car, go from Cividale to the Valli del Natisone and Clodig. From Castelmonte go in the direction of Tri-bil. By foot, from Paciuch in Drenchia take the trail that is marked towards Bivacco Za-nuso (4 hours). From the bridge at Clinaz, follow the road that goes to Clabuzzaro reachable also by mountain bike (4 hours).

LOCATION: the area is characterized by vast green pastures that were once dedi-cated to grazing, and by black pine forests.

The Judrio River, which marks the border between Italy and Slovenia for 30 km, starts in the Solaire Valley.

HOW TO GET THERE: from the state road 202 or from Trieste get to Bagnoli della Ro-sandra and follow the stream towards Bag-noli Superiore. Cross the town and the road brings you to the Alpine Lodge.

LOCATION: the Mario Premuda Alpine Lodge is located on the left bank of the Rosandra Stream in the Rosandra Valley, the largest division in the Carso plateau. The environment is particular: the stream, the

vegetation, the rock faces and the caves re-mind one of alpine landscapes, even though we are close to the Sea.
