REFLECTION BY DR. SCOTT HAHN
In today’s Gospel Jesus has just been healing
and casting out demons in Galilee. Along with the
crowds, who flock to Him so that He can’t even
take a break to eat, come people who do not
understand what He is doing. Even His friends
think He has lost His mind and needs to be taken
away for a while. But the scribes who came down
from Jerusalem are not just honestly mistaken;
they accuse Him of being possessed by the prince
of demons.
The reality is just the opposite. Jesus is revealing
Himself as the one promised in our first reading. He
is the seed of the woman who has come to crush
the head of the demonic serpent. In the parable of
the strong man, Jesus reveals that He has come
not just to punish the devil but to free those bound
by him. As St. Bede explains, “The Lord has also
bound the strong man, that is, the devil: which
means, He has restrained him from seducing the
elect, and entering into his house, the world; He
has spoiled his house, and His goods, that is men,
because He has snatched them from the snares of
the devil, and has united them to His Church.”
The scribes blaspheme by attributing this work of
the Holy Spirit to demons. Jesus adds a statement
that shocks us at first: “Whoever blasphemes
against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness.”
That does not mean that there are any limits to
the mercy of God (CCC 1864). Rather, the only sin
that cannot be forgiven is the deliberate refusal to
accept the mercy offered through the Holy Spirit.
Instead, we must imitate those who sat at Jesus’
feet. For, as He said, “Whoever does the will of
God is my brother, and sister, and mother.”

School News White House WOMEN’S Retreat
Join other Women from our Quincy parishes in making their annual retreat at White House. This will be a silent, guided retreat based on the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. It’s a peaceful break from the chaos and confu-sion of everyday life. It’s like a 3-day vacation with Christ on their beautiful 80-acre campus high on the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River. All meals and private lodging are provided. There is no set fee to attend a retreat at White House! White House operates on a free will offering basis, asking those in attendance to simply give what they feel they can at the conclusion of the retreat. Women’s retreats are held May-November, with 13 scheduled for this year. Visit www.whretreat.org to find the exact dates. For more information or to register, call 1-800-643-1003.
Monthly Update on the Spiritual Adoption Program
MONTH ONE — Developing Baby Spiritual Adoption Program. Your spiritually adopted baby has been quite
active over the past month. Already your baby is 10,000 times bigger than at conception. Your baby has devel-oped the foundations of his/her brain, spinal cord, and nervous system by the 20th day. His/her heart began to beat on the 21st day. His/her heart is pumping blood through its own circulatory system and the blood type can be different from his/her mother’s. Your baby is most vulnerable during the next month of being aborted. Pray that the Lord of Life might move the heart of his/her mother to give him/her the most precious gift of all — the gift of life.
Watoto Children’s Choir The Watoto Children’s Choir, a group of 18 orphans from Uganda, will continue its six-month U.S. tour at Vermont Street United Methodist Church on June 19 at 7:00 p.m., featuring a new concert, Signs & Wonders. The concert will feature worship songs that share the stories of the children and the joy that they have because of God’s love. All performances are open to the public and there is no fee to book the choir.
Poverty in the Quincy Area
You are invited to attend a discussion about “Poverty in the Quincy Area” that will be held Tuesday, June 19, 2018, at 7:00 p.m. at Blessed Sacrament Church in the Gathering Area. Steve Bohnstedt, a professional photog-rapher who is preparing a document about homelessness in Quincy, will be the guest speaker. Monsignor Michael Kuse will moderate. Laudato Si’ Study Group is the sponsor. Pope Francis discusses poverty in his Laudato Si’ encyclical. Please feel welcome to attend.

Cost for the study materials is $15. Register by Monday, June 18, by calling the Parish Office, 222-2759, Ann Gage, 257-4392, or e-mail [email protected]
