The Skilled Crafts Sector
A wide-ranging field of economic activities in Germany:
• goods and services for private households and enterprises in all sectors
• independent economic sector separate from industry and commerce
• not defined by the number of employees or by turnover, but by belonging to one of the skilled craft trades as laid out in the Crafts Act

The Crafts Act - “Handwerksordnung”
94 trades - 7 groups:
1. building and finishing (e.g. bricklayers, painters and lacquers)
2. metals and electricity (e.g. car mechatronics and electrical installers)
3. wood (e.g. joiners, parquetry layers)
4. clothing, textiles an leather (e.g. tailors, shoemakers, interior decorators)
5. foodstuffs (e.g. bakers, butchers, millers)
6. healthy, body care, chemicals and cleaning (e.g. opticians, hairdressers, building cleaners)
7. glass, paper, ceramics and others (e.g. glassers, printers, violin makers)
