TIM Success stories in handling special events
5G World Summit – London June, 28
Design and development of innovative LTE-A Networks for
two outstanding global events: Milan Expo 2015 and Jubilee Rome 2016
Graziano Bini
Head of Technology – TIMLab - Wireless Access Engineering and Devices
2 5G World Summit
Graziano Bini, TIM
Acquired in 4Q 2011 10MHz@800MHz, 5MHz@1800 and 15MHz@2600 MHz bands and starting from 2012 fast LTE deployment plan (acquired also 20MHz SDL @1400MHz in 2015)
Focus on 4G/4Gplus evolution as a single future proof network for:
1. LTE anytime, anywhere and best for ubiquitous high performance UBB services
Leveraging 800MHz (and 1800MHz) for pervasive coverage: excellent indoor coverage in cities and UBB also in rural area
Use new spectrum (also coming from refarming in 1800MHz) and LTEadv features (Carrier Aggregation, Comp, …) in order to achieve high performance and capacity for data traffic growth
Introduce new services (as Public Safety Services)
2. New interpersonal communications with VoLTE, ViLTE and RCS:
Complete coverage for HD Voice with Rich Communication system minimizing SRVCC and CSFB
3. Create Mobile IoT in 4G using a complete portfolio of LTE/LTEadv category:
Cat 3, 4, 6, 9, 12 and more for demanding IoT use cases (high throughput, low latency)
Cat 1, M1 and NB-IoT for low throughput, low cost, extra coverage and long battery use cases
4. Accelerating legacy network delayering and decommissioning leveraging on fast devices migration (in particular smartphone) and enable refarming bands for LTE.
A long journey that anticipate something from 5G (NB-IoT, Cloud RAN, …)
as an LTE evolution and not revolution (investment valorization)
LTE as keyword for TIM

For those projects TIM introduced many innovations in LTE/LTE advanced network:
High density HetNet scenario for digital smart city “Expo 2015 town”
Network optimization for crowded places and events
LTE Small cells in Vatican area (leveraging in innovative way legacy phone booths)
Multi-beam antennas (in St Peter square!...)
LTE Broadcast live trial, first in Italy
LTE-A 3 Carrier Aggregation commercial deployment, first in Italy (LTE “Cat9”),
Expo 2015 and Jubilee 2016
4 5G World Summit

The Digital Smart City set up at the Expo 2015
site in collaboration with TIM as the Official
Global Partner of the event, offers a
technological model of the city of the future,
with highly tangible potential: maximum 4G
network coverage, multimedia totems for
managing services, innovative applications for
smart tourism, HD video content broadcasting
on the LTE network, big data management
platforms and much more.

EXPO: Macro vs Micro Traffic Volume
10 15 17 20 Hour
The analysis reported hereafter was made in the week from 4th to 10th of October that is one of the most loaded weeks LTE small cell The average traffic volume measured in each BH over “Micro” is compared to the same size calculated over “Macro” cells. The ratio is about 70%. There are some BH where the traffic over Micro is higher than the ones on the macro.

Graziano Bini, TIM
EXPO: The gain achieved by the microcells
Comparison of downlink Scheduled Throughput
It is quite evident the better performance in the Micro. The gain at the 90th percentile is more than 100%
Also, it can be noted that in the high capacity scenario some of the micros have the same performance as the macros since they are very close and are serving both very high traffic
The graph on the right reports the DL scheduled Throughput measured in 24 Hours on 08th October versus the reported CQI
Micro cells show CQI distribution similar to Macro however samples in the green area are much better (higher DL cell Throughput) in Micro than Macro

After bringing the first LTE advanced network in Italy in November 2014 with 2CA up to 225Mbps, a year later TIM confirm the innovation leadership implementing for the first time in Italy the 4G+ Plus next step in Rome for the Jubilee thanks to the Three Carrier Aggregation–3CA. This Technology enables TIM to offer significantly increased downlink speed up to 300 Mbps across the coverage area using the first commercial device Samsung S6 edge +.
