Group 1
Technology Transfer and Academic Industry Partnerships
• Goal: To address issues with Academic-Industry partnerships regarding a variety of issues such as patent law, conflicts of interest, presentation of research results and control of data.
Societal valorisation bias: fatal shortcut
“pilotitis”
--Discovered in a biotech (B) or in a university and developed first by a biotech in same region (U>Bin) --Discovered in a university and developed first by a biotech in a different region (U>Bout) --Discovered in a university and developed first by an established company, usually a pharmaceutical co (U>P) --Discovered in a small pharmaceutical co (Ps) --Discovered in the in-house labs of a large pharma (>500 employees, established before 1976) (P)

What works
http://apc.ucc.ie
Realistic expectations Collaboration works best Intellectually challenging Industry-academe internships
Pfizer CTI:UCSF Alliance
• Collaboration designed to jointly engage in Research Programs that
identify protein biologic and small molecule therapeutic candidates
directed at targets or pathways that culminate in Phase I clinical
trials that demonstrate Proof-of-Mechanism (PoM).
• CTI: Centers for Therapeutic Innovation (CTI), a newly created entrepreneurial research unit at Pfizer,
Inc.

Opportunities & Challenges
Opportunity to identify emerging science and find compatible industry
partner, with potential to commercialize.
Opportunity to evolve relationship with industry partner, new, highly
collaborative models of engagement.
Opportunity to train UCSF PIs and postdoctoral scientists in translational
science and industry research, goals and culture
Examples of Challenges:
•Cultural differences (e.g. decision making, data interpretation / next steps, internal pressure points
and processes)
•Managing timelines, procedural differences in project execution
•Perceived lack of flexibility of partner due to very focused objectives
•Understanding the culture of publish and academic reward system vs. industry success metrics
•Changing priorities at companies, unrelated to program science, can quickly change interest,
scope or scale of project
•Importance of true project champion at company key to success
TU/e strategy revised
Just some elements:
• Strong focus on:
– collaboration with industry (both small and large)
– (student) entrepreneurship
• Strategic IP is basis for patents, licenses and negotiations
• Other IP made available to industry for ‘free’

Observations
• Start-up biotech companies are responsible for a large majority of new therapeutic agents
• Avoid the ‘knowledge paradox’ (go beyond publishing a paper)
• Avoid ‘pilotitis’ • Agreements • Proximity • Internships & exchanges • Look for innovation from all members of the
team
