Enjoyment truly knows no boundary and, at the GROSSARLER HOF, this applies to the cuisine too: our chef Walter Viehauser has taken to heart the Austrian government’s ‘Genussregion’ initiative to promote regional food specialities, and guests really appreciate his game and fish dishes. Culinary delights abound in our elegant Alpine-style restaurant and in the Jagastub’n à la carte restaurant where guests are transported back in time: linen tablecloths, rustic wooden chairs and benches, a tiled stove and hunting trophies. This world of enjoyment is rounded off with our superbly assorted cellar – the wines are predominantly Austrian, complimented by rare vintages from the Bordeaux region. During our weekly wine tasting guests can expect exciting tasting sessions of first class wines from established growers and notable young vintners.

Culinary delights and winery delectation: four 4-star hotels, the GROSSARLER HOF, Moar Gut, Nesslerhof and Edelweiss, have put together a unique package of delights to make Grossarl the number one gourmet address in Austria from 6 – 10 January. On four evenings, the GROSSARLER HOF’s chef Walter Viehhauser and his team indulge you with sophisticated creations accompanied by wines from top Austrian vintners Vinzent Bründlmayer, Erich Polz, Hannes Reeh and Fritz Wieninger, who take turns at each hotel to present their wines and taste them with you.

The highlights of the week are the two gourmet lunches by award-winning chefs Rudi Obauer and Franz Fuiko on 7 January at the Gewolfhütte and on 8 January at the Panoramahütte in the heart of the Grossarl-Dorfgastein ski resort. Together they conjure up a range of hearty Salzburg di-shes, culminating in an exquisite summit of delights, accompanied by wines produced by young and aspiring winemakers, presented by Roland Hahn of the Genussbar. Set off for epicurean peaks with our special Grossarl Summit of Delights offer.

The Salzburg Mountain Advent in the Grossarl valley is about as Christmassy as you can get! A life-size, carved nativity scene lies at the heart of the Christmas market in Grossarl that invites you to a pre-Christmas voyage of discovery. The Christmas post office, poetry readings and torchlight walks are some of the wonderful rural Advent events that await. Quality, authenticity and tradition are at the heart of the Advent festivities in the Grossarl valley.

Listen to the carol singing, try the freshly baked fruit bread or enjoy St Nicholas Day celebration in the Christmas workshop! Christmas in Grossarl is a traditional and peaceful celebration shared with all our guests.

Their breath steams in the crisp winter air, the snow crunches under their hooves and the sleigh’s runners glide through the snowy landscape – a romantic horse-drawn sleigh ride is just one of the many beautiful aspects of the gentle side of winter in the Grossarl valley. Another unforgettable experience that takes you up close and personal with nature is snowshoeing. You can hire all the equipment you need from the GROSSARLER HOF before getting stuck into some wintry fun – we’ll be delighted to organise a snowshoeing guide for you.

Experience the unique atmosphere of a winter’s night during a torchlight walk to the Mooslehenalm Alpine lodge. On arrival you are welcomed with warming mulled wine, punch, and campfires.

Following a tour of the lodge we make the return trip with toboggans and headlamps to the GROSSARLER HOF where a delicious dinner awaits!

The Grossarl Valley also offers superb conditions for both classic cross-country and skate skiers. The start of the cross-country ski trail is within a few minutes walk from the GROSSARLER HOF. 29km of cross-country ski runs in and around Grossarl and Hüttschlag offer an extensive network for touring enjoyment. Experienced guides run courses for beginners and improvers seeking to improve their technique - why not benefit from the experts’ useful tips and advice? Equipment is available for hire from the local sports store in Grossarl.

Relaxation, deep inner peace and equilibrium – the Erlenreich Relax & SPA is the backdrop for guided Yoga practice which we offer twice a week as part of our activity programme. In addition we organise a twice yearly Yoga retreat with Anastasia Stoyannides.

YOGA RETREATSYoga retreats are open to people of all ages regardless of their abilities. You do not need to have had any prior experience of Yoga to participate. Anastasia Stoyannides responds to the needs of each individual participant. The postures chosen for the classes during the course of the retreat will therefore vary in line with the requirements of the group. Yogis and Yoginis are also encouraged to

respect their individual psychosomatic conditions and to adapt their Yoga practice accordingly. Priority is given more to the quality of attention and the state of being during the practice rather than to achieving advanced physical postures. While practising the Yoga technique ‘bien tempéré’, we are supporting a non-competitive performance, trusting the principle that with a minimum of effort, we can achieve the maximum of effect. www.anastasiayoga.com

SUMMER IN THE VALLEY OF

ALPINE MEADOWS

Page 30: GROSSARLER HOF, Grossarl, Austria

The Schödersee at the head of the valley in Hüttschlag is a periodic lake – more specifically, the only periodic lake in the Hohe Tauern National Park, and it only fills up during snowmelt and

after particularly heavy downpours. In between it disappears completely, and only a small stream remains in the

broad basin, eventually disappearing amongst a few stones.

Page 31: GROSSARLER HOF, Grossarl, Austria

Flowering meadows, rushing streams and majestic summits provide the magnificent backdrop to unique holiday experiences. 10,000 animal species and 1,800 plant species have their natural and secure habitat around the GROSSARLER HOF, in the Hohe Tauern National Park. Observing chamois, golden eagles, deer, marmots and many other animal species in their Alpine homeland is an unforgettable experience. Last but not least, don’t forget your camera!

The Hohe Tauern National Park’s summer programmes are full of great ideas for making the most of this unique environment. Guided

walks with National Park rangers, amazing mountain hikes and unforgettable wildlife watching are just a few examples.

THE GROSSARLVALLEY’S SEVEN PEAKCHALLENGEWalking to the seven most beautiful and challenging peaks of the Grossarl Valley is a mission for truly ambitious hill and mountain walkers. Many prefer to tackle each peak in stages, and come back year after year to complete the challenge. Each stage is a demanding day walk and requires walkers to be in peak condition. Each day ends with a return to the GROSSARLER HOF where you can enjoy the hotel’s superb comfort and fabulous facilities. The guided peak challenge walks are organised by BERG-GESUND.

GOLFEight picturesque golf courses are within an hour’s drive of the GROSSARLER HOF.Tee off in the magnificent mountain scenery, and enjoy golfing experiences in a class of their own – that’s golf in Salzburger Land.

Our tip: golf taster lessons at the Goldegg and Radstadt Golf Clubs

Let a golf pro introduce you to the sport – and you’ll soon be hitting it long, pitching, putting and chipping.

Masters of the sport and beginners can try their hand on our own stretch of the river. The Grossarler Ache has a fishing area of about 18km in length and is supplemented by numerous tributaries in peaceful side valleys. It is a typical mountain stream that meanders along its upper course. A small lake close to the top end of our fishing area feeds the river, which ensures optimal water conditions for our fly fishing guests almost all year round.
