ACADEMICS

GRIZZLY ACADEMY IS BACK IN TOWN!---Grizzly Academy is an opportunity for students to take or re-do summative assessments. Since summative assessments account for 80% of a student’s cumulative grade in each class, Grizzly Academy is a fantastic opportunity for students to drastically improve both their learning and their grades. We currently have Grizzly Academy scheduled every Friday night from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. (11/19, 12/3, 12/10, and 12/17) until Winter Break. Students will be invited by their teachers to attend Grizzly Academy if they are missing work or need to re-do work for a better grade. There will be snacks and drinks sold for a very reasonable cost so that students can focus on their work, not on their gurgling stomachs! Make sure to look for additional Grizzly Academy updates once second semester begins.

GRADE LEVEL AND TEAM eNEWSLETTERS---Perhaps, at times, your middle schooler is not very forthcoming with specific information when you ask him/her, “So what are you studying in school?” or “What did you do in school today?” We know how frustrating that can be at times (We’ve either been there ourselves or are there now, as parents!). That is why we have created the Team eNewsletter that will be emailed to you on a bi- weekly basis (if we have your updated email address) from your child’s interdisciplinary team of teachers for the subjects of Math, Language Arts, Science and Social Studies. Sometimes general information about events and activities that are happening on that team, at that grade level, or at Piney Grove in general will be included. Team eNewsletters are nothing fancy (just the facts!) and are designed to give you a brief synopsis of what is going on for those two weeks in each of these subject areas; everything from topics of study, to quizzes or tests that week, or projects assigned and/or that are due that week. These eNewsletters began coming your way on Thursday, August 19th. They will continue to be sent out every other Thursday with information about the upcoming weeks. With your bi-weekly Team eNewsletter in hand, imagine now what kind of in-depth conversation you can have with your middle schooler about what he/she is studying in school! Listed below are eNewsletter dates for the 2010-2011 school year: December 2, 2010 February 10, 2011 April 14, 2011 January 13, 2011 February 24, 2011 May 12, 2011 January 27, 2011 March 10, 2011 PARENT PORTAL---Be sure to sign up for Parent Portal by registering with the school. It’s easy…and only takes about five minutes! You will need to come visit our school receptionist and show her a photo ID. She will give you an activation code, and then you can access Parent Portal from the link on the Forsyth County web site. Once you’ve registered with Parent Portal, you can check your child’s grades, attendance, and discipline anytime you want from any computer that has internet access. Talk about staying “in the know” when it comes to your child’s academic progress this year…this is the way to go!!

THE ARTS BAND NOTES---As we are getting into the second quarter of the school year all classes have been, and will continue to be, tested on scales, performance materials and exercises out of the beginning book. Please look at Parent Portal to see how your child is doing. If you never hear an instrument at your house, your child never practices. Every child needs to practice their instrument! Band is a more skill-based activity than other classroom subjects. Just like practicing your free throws will make your shooting percentage better, practicing will help you play your instrument better. The Winter Concert will be on Tuesday, December 14, 2010 and will begin at 7:00 p.m. All grade level bands will be performing. Hope to see all of you in the PGMS gymnasium!

ART NOTES---There are great projects planned for our young artists this year in the Piney Grove Art Studio. YOU can help heighten our studio experience by keeping an eye out in your home and community for items that we can use. We can find a creative use for nearly anything, even items you think are discards! We recycle materials and can put them to GOOD use! Please check out our Wish List at the end of this newsletter.

ATHLETICS BASKETBALL---Congratulations to all of our Grizzly Basketball Teams. All four teams got a fast start “out of the gate” and our 7th and 8th grade boys are still undefeated. Our 8th grade guys look to continue the streak and our 8th grade girls hope to get back to their winning ways when they travel over to South Forsyth Middle School this evening. After a fun, first four games, our Grizzlies will enjoy a much deserved Thanksgiving break before returning home to square off with out-of-county foes from Buford. We expect a sensational match-up between the schools, and would love to see you there. All students staying for the games must have a parent permission form signed with them either Tuesday or Thursday at school. Admission is $4 for adults and $3 for students.

Page 3: Grizzly Gazette - Forsyth County Schools€¦ · Grizzly Gazette November 18, 2010 Volume 4, Issue 8 Dear Piney Grove Students and Parents: Students will have an extra long Thanksgiving

ATHLETICS HISER ORTHODONTICS ATHLETIC SPONSORSHIP---PGMS would like to thank Hiser Orthodontics for their continued support of Piney Grove Athletics. As part of our partnership with Hiser Orthodontics, representatives will be at our next home games against Buford with complimentary rosters and will promote a free throw contest during half-time of the games. Thank you again to Hiser Orthodontics. HOOPS for HEART – Our 3rd Annual Hoops for Heart 3-on-3 Tournament will be held Friday, December 17th. Teams must be co-ed and only one PGMS basketball player is allowed per team. Each grade level will compete in a tournament during their Connections classes with prizes going to our overall winners. Entry fee is $15 per team and general admission is $1. All fees and admission money will go directly to the American Heart Association. Please see Coach D to register your team.

ACTIVITIES HOLIDAY ASSISTANCE---Piney Grove Middle School is continuing the spirit of giving through our annual tradition of supporting the YMCA Holiday Giving Tree for Kids. The YMCA registers local families who need help this Holiday season, and they rely on local business, volunteers, families and generous donors to make it a success. Piney Grove is excited to be a part of this community program for the third year. Your generosity will benefit needy families in Forsyth County. Students are encouraged to participate in this community outreach by donating money now through Friday, December 3rd . Each student who donates at least $1 will be entered in a drawing to go shopping for a needy family. Sixth graders are donating money in math classes and will be shopping Tuesday, December 7th. Seventh and eighth graders will be donating money in Grizzly Time and shopping Thursday, December 9th. For every $125 raised, one needy child is sponsored. Last year, sixth grade students raised over $4,500 and sponsored 36 children. Seventh and eighth graders raised over $1,200 and sponsored 17 children for a total of 53 children sponsored by Piney Grove! Let’s see how much we can raise this year! Please contact Sarah Coats, [email protected], or Kris Johnson, [email protected], with any questions.

GET YOUR SUCKERS HERE!---The Science Department will be sponsoring PGMS Sucker Day this Friday, November 19th. Suckers will be sold in the Atruim before Grizzly Time. Each sucker will be $1.00 and will help support the Science Fair and purchase laboratory supplies for Piney Grove science classes.

FIND THE PERFECT TREE!---The South Forsyth High School Baseball team is preparing for their Annual Christmas Tree Fundraiser. Tree sales will begin in front of the high school, late afternoon on Friday, November 26th and will continue through December 18th. Trees range in sizes from 6-12 feet tall. Please stop by and support the SFHS baseball program! Attached at the end of this newsletter is a $10 off coupon to use on the price of the tree or for free delivery within the Cumming area. This coupon is good for all staff and parents of students in the Forsyth County School District. You must present the coupon at the time of purchase to receive the discount. BUILDERS CLUB MITTEN AND HAT TREE---We hope that you will join us in helping to warm the hands of our community. Every year, Piney Grove’s Builder’s Club holds a hat and mitten drive to collect new hats and mittens to donate to our community through Kiwanis of Cumming. In the past two years we have donated almost 400 pairs of mittens and hats to our community. We hope to reach our goal again this year of 200 pairs of mittens or gloves and hats. During the first two weeks of December we will be collecting new mittens/gloves for men, women and children and new hats/toboggans. We decorate a tree in the atrium with the gloves and hats too. Students can turn in hats and gloves to their Grizzly Time during those two weeks and there will be prizes for the first and second place class that collect the most mittens and hats. Please join us in our Mitten and Hat and Collections and help us to reach our goal. THE NEXT PGMS HAT DAY IS FRIDAY, DECEMBER 3RD!---The PGMS ESOL Department is sponsoring Hat Day on December 3, 2010. Bring a $1.00 and wear your favorite hat. All monies collected will be used towards the purchase of paperback books for our ESOL students. PGMS IPOD DAY---Do you ever imagine students using their IPod technology for more than listening to music? This technological tool is now being used in classrooms across America as part of the teaching and learning process. Many K-12 educators and college professors are enhancing their students’ education by using IPods in many of their classrooms. On Friday, December 10th, the Foreign Language Department will sponsor the first IPod day at the Grove. The fundraiser initiative will serve two purposes: sponsor a family in need during the holidays and collect funds to buy books, audio and video materials for our department. For a mere $5, you can join the IPod experience while supporting a good cause!!!

ACTIVITIES ONE BUCK WILL GET YOU A SUCKER!---On Wednesday, December 15, 2010, the Multicultural Club and the ESOL Department will be sponsoring a fundraiser. We will be selling suckers for $1 each. Monies collected will be used for materials and resources for our students.

PGMS SCIENCE FAIR JUDGING DAY---The Second Annual Science Fair Judging Day is Wednesday, December 15th. Seventh and eighth grade Science Fair display boards will be exhibited in the PGMS Main Hallway Tuesday night, December 14th, and all day Friday, December 15th. You are welcome to view the scientific accomplishments of our students as you walk to the Gym for the Band Concert. The top 40 projects in the school will be judged in the Media Center on December 15th by staff, administrators and community volunteers. Our best 10 will be sent to compete in the Forsyth County Science Fair on January 19th and the Regional Fair in February.

PGMS MATH TEAMS EXCEL!---Congratulations to both the 7th and 8th grade PGMS Math Teams for their victories this past weekend at the South Forsyth HS Math Competition. The seventh grade team, whose members included Garrett C., Nithin R., Amy S., and Suprotik D., took Second Place overall. Amy S. and Garrett C. won individual trophies for their high individual scores. The 8th grade Math I team, made up of Rohit K., Akhil K., Satwik N., and Sai A., took Third Place overall, and Rohit K. brought home an individual trophy as well. These eight individuals competed in a team problem-solving round, a relay match, and an individual tournament. Eight students...Five trophies...that's a wonderful winning percentage!! We’re so proud of our math superstars!

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR ACADEMIC BOWL TEAM!---The Academic Bowl Team was at it again at the November 6th Annual Westminster Tournament. All three teams led by Coaches Levi, Simshauser, and Wiles built upon their success from their first tournament. One team made up of Akhil K., Matthew S., Raghav S., Sai A., Nitin C., Garrett C., and Prahlaad R. had an amazing 6-0 match streak during the open rounds. They went on to win one playoff round before being eliminated. They brought home a nice trophy to add to our display case. The hard work and dedication of all team members were very instrumental in this team's success!

THANK YOU! PGMS “CAN” MAKE A DIFFERENCE!---The Junior Beta Club would like to extend a huge THANK YOU to all that supported the canned food drive. Our Piney Grove Grizzlies took in just over 1,000 cans for the cause! This is up from last year! The Meals on Wheels program of Forsyth County was truly overwhelmed with the donation. The canned goods will be delivered to seniors in the area that cannot leave their homes and this donation will go a long way to stocking several pantries for a long time to come. The individual class winners are: in sixth grade with 78 cans, Ms. Hawkin’s Grizzly Time, from Ms. Artzer’s seventh grade Grizzly Time, 132 cans; and finally, Ms. Coats/Ms. Johnson’s eighth grade Grizzly Time brought in 119 cans. Thank you again for supporting the Junior Beta Club in their Fourth Annual Canned Food Drive. The winners will receive breakfast from our business partner, Chick-fil-A this Friday morning.

HOW TO KEEP UP-TO-DATE WITH ALL OF THE EXCITING EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES AT PINEY GROVE!—As a Piney Grove student, there are many academic, athletic, musical, drama, club and social events to know about and keep up with regarding what is happening at The Grove. As a Piney Grove parent, it is also very important for you to “stay in the loop” about everything that is going on at PGMS. We realize how imperative it is for everyone to be “in the know” about all the “happenings” that go on at Piney Grove each week. That is why we publish a master school calendar for the entire school year on our school website and publish the Grizzly Gazette twice a month. Both of these publications will help you keep a pulse on what is happening throughout the year. Both the Grizzly Gazette and the School Calendar can be found on our PGMS website by going to www.forsyth.k12.ga.us. For the school calendar, select “Schools” on the top toolbar; click on “Piney Grove” listed in the column under “Middle”; in the center of the page under Upcoming Events/Announcements, click on “View Calendar”. For the Grizzly Gazette, click on “Current and Past Editions of the Grizzly Gazette” to the right on the Home page; then click on the edition you want to view. We will also be sending the Grizzly Gazette out in a “group mailing” via e-mail to all our PGMS families who have updated their e-mail address with us. The dates for when each new edition of the Grizzly Gazette will be e-mailed and published on-line at our website are listed below. We want and need all of our students and parents to stay “in the loop” with what is happening at PGMS this year!

ACTIVITIES MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN A CHILD’S LIFE…BECOME A MENTOR!---Becoming a mentor involves committing to spend 30 minutes per week during school hours with a student for the school year, and hopefully the following year. What does a mentor do? They might:

- Read to a student - Play a game - Help with an assignment - Do an activity

- Just LISTEN How do you become a mentor? Mentor training requires attending one training session, completing an application and a background check. Mentor training will be held at Piney Grove on Wednesday, December 8th from 9:00-10:30 a.m. All you have to do is show up! If you have any questions regarding the mentoring program, please contact Kris Johnson at 678.965.5010, ext. 381005 or email at [email protected]
