Why students are able, and very much encouraged, to re-take tests at Piney Grove was covered during this parent information session. When I was in school, students had one chance to demonstrate that they had learned the information that was being taught. If a student did not learn the information, the teacher would simply move on no matter how important the information was to the students in the future. To me, learning is like climbing a ladder. In order to get to the top, you need to have all the rungs in place. If a student did not learn something, they did not get their rung on their learning ladder and they could never reach the top. At schools that give students the opportunity to re-take tests, I do believe that all students can get to the top of their learning ladder. I do think that it is safe to say that all students learn in different ways and at different rates. I personally do not know anyone who has learned everything the very first time that they were exposed to new information. Just think for a moment about how much better you are at your job now than when you first started. Considering this, I do think it is important to give students more than one opportunity to get to the top of their learning ladder. A few days ago I was browsing the College Board’s website. The College Board is the organization that oversees the SAT college entrance examination. On their website I noticed a feature called Score Choice. In short, Score Choice allows prospective college students to take the SAT multiple times and then choose which section from which test date that will be sent to colleges and universities. Students no longer have to send all their scores from a single test date. Instead, they can pick and choose their best scores from multiple dates and then send those scores off in hopes of getting into the college of their choice. Basically, the College Board is allowing students the opportunity to re-learn and re-assess multiple times so that their scores are truly an indicator of what a student has learned as opposed to what a student has learned by a particular date. In other words, the College Board is allowing students to show how high up they are on their learning ladder. When I was in school, the ability to re-learn and re-assess was never an option for students. Today, I do believe that many, many students benefit from re-learning and re-assessing. Change in education can be difficult. I always like to think about a phrase that a principal I once knew was fond of. When something that involved change was being discussed, he would ask people if they would feel comfortable going to their cardiologist and hearing, “I am going to perform this procedure on you that I learned in the 1960’s.” His point was this; there is probably a better way to do things than when we (adults) were in school. I do think that the ability to re-learn and re-assess represents something that has changed for the better since we were in school and it definitely measures where students are on their learning ladder. Dear Piney Grove Students and Parents:

Recently, the AJC ran an article on the topic of students being able to re-take tests in Forsyth County if they did not receive a

passing grade. Coincidentally, the night before the article ran, members of Piney Grove’s teacher leadership team gave a

presentation to parents at our school on grading and reporting. Why students are able, and very much encouraged, to re-take

tests at Piney Grove was covered during this parent information session. I do wish that the reporter from the AJC was in the

audience to hear our teacher leaders explain the philosophy behind this subject. Any parent reading this can attest to the fact

that test re-takes did not take place while we were in school. This, in my opinion, is one of the main reasons why this topic can

be so controversial.

When I was in school, students had one chance to demonstrate that they had learned the information that was being taught. If

a student did not learn the information, the teacher would simply move on no matter how important the information was to the

students in the future. To me, learning is like climbing a ladder. In order to get to the top, you need to have all the rungs in

place. If a student did not learn something, they did not get their rung on their learning ladder and they could never reach the

top.

At schools that give students the opportunity to re-take tests, I do believe that all students can get to the top of their learning

ladder. I do think that it is safe to say that all students learn in different ways and at different rates. I personally do not know

anyone who has learned everything the very first time that they were exposed to new information. Just think for a moment

about how much better you are at your job now than when you first started. Considering this, I do think it is important to give

students more than one opportunity to get to the top of their learning ladder.

A few days ago I was browsing the College Board’s website. The College Board is the organization that oversees the SAT

college entrance examination. On their website I noticed a feature called Score Choice. In short, Score Choice allows

prospective college students to take the SAT multiple times and then choose which section from which test date that will be

sent to colleges and universities. Students no longer have to send all their scores from a single test date. Instead, they can

pick and choose their best scores from multiple dates and then send those scores off in hopes of getting into the college of their

choice. Basically, the College Board is allowing students the opportunity to re-learn and re-assess multiple times so that their

scores are truly an indicator of what a student has learned as opposed to what a student has learned by a particular date. In

other words, the College Board is allowing students to show how high up they are on their learning ladder.

When I was in school, the ability to re-learn and re-assess was never an option for students. Today, I do believe that many,

many students benefit from re-learning and re-assessing. Change in education can be difficult. I always like to think about a

phrase that a principal I once knew was fond of. When something that involved change was being discussed, he would ask

people if they would feel comfortable going to their cardiologist and hearing, “I am going to perform this procedure on you

that I learned in the 1960’s.” His point was this; there is probably a better way to do things than when we (adults) were in

school. I do think that the ability to re-learn and re-assess represents something that has changed for the better since we were

in school and it definitely measures where students are on their learning ladder.

Some of the areas that received grant funding are the Science Dept., the Language Dept., the Spanish Dept., the PE Dept, the Drama Dept., the Art Dept., Chorus, Band, the Media Center and the Counseling Dept. We are so grateful, that with your support, we can make a difference at Piney Grove!

ACADEMICS

ADVANCED PLACEMENT PARENT NIGHT – SOUTH FORSYTH HIGH SCHOOL---On November 9, 2010, the Advanced Studies department of SFHS will host a Parent's Night. Parents of rising 9th grade students who are interested in the Advanced Placement (AP) programs should attend to meet the faculty and learn more about the curriculum offerings. The evening will start off at South Forsyth High School in the East Hall Cafeteria at 6:00 pm. For more information contact Suzanne Korngold, Administrator, [email protected] or Matt Loveless, AP Human Geography Teacher, [email protected]. 13½ WEEKS PROGRESS REPORTS---On Wednesday, November 10th, all students will receive their 13½ week Progress Reports to inform students and their parents how they are progressing in their classes this first semester. We hope all of our students and parents will take a few minutes to sit down and discuss how your child is doing. At this juncture, only 4½ weeks remain in the first semester. Parents, if you are pleased with how your child is progressing, then keep encouraging and supporting him/her as you are. If you have any questions or concerns, then we encourage you to contact your child’s teacher(s) to work in partnership as a threesome---student, teacher(s), parent---to decide upon a plan of action to help your child reach his/her true academic potential.

GRADE LEVEL AND TEAM eNEWSLETTERS---Perhaps, at times, your middle schooler is not very forthcoming with specific information when you ask him/her, “So what are you studying in school?” or “What did you do in school today?” We know how frustrating that can be at times (We’ve either been there ourselves or are there now, as parents!). That is why we have created the Team eNewsletter that will be emailed to you on a bi- weekly basis (if we have your updated email address) from your child’s interdisciplinary team of teachers for the subjects of Math, Language Arts, Science and Social Studies. Sometimes general information about events and activities that are happening on that team, at that grade level, or at Piney Grove in general will be included. Team eNewsletters are nothing fancy (just the facts!) and are designed to give you a brief synopsis of what is going on for those two weeks in each of these subject areas; everything from topics of study, to quizzes or tests that week, or projects assigned and/or that are due that week. These eNewsletters began coming your way on Thursday, August 19th. They will continue to be sent out every other Thursday with information about the upcoming weeks. With your bi-weekly Team eNewsletter in hand, imagine now what kind of in-depth conversation you can have with your middle schooler about what he/she is studying in school! Listed below are eNewsletter dates for the 2010-2011 school year: November 11, 2010 January 27, 2011 March 10, 2011 December 2, 2010 February 10, 2011 April 14, 2011 January 13, 2011 February 24, 2011 May 12, 2011 PARENT PORTAL---Be sure to sign up for Parent Portal by registering with the school. It’s easy…and only takes about five minutes! You will need to come visit our school receptionist and show her a photo ID. She will give you an activation code, and then you can access Parent Portal from the link on the Forsyth County web site. Once you’ve registered with Parent Portal, you can check your child’s grades, attendance, and discipline anytime you want from any computer that has internet access. Talk about staying “in the know” when it comes to your child’s academic progress this year…this is the way to go!!

THE ARTS BAND NOTES---What a concert! Seventh and eighth grade bands performed last month and they are really coming along. Now that students understand what is expected and at what level we need to perform at, preparation for the winter concert is underway. Students will be tested regularly on scales and excerpts from the music. Look on ANGEL for assignments. Sixth graders will be performing at the Winter concert. Look for an email and a handout concerning Piney Grove Band polo shirts. Sixth graders will wear their polos and black pants for the concert. Please refer to the band handbook for appropriate dress at concerts. You do not want to be that woman in the TV commercial who needs to have her child dressed like one of the new world explorers that day! Black shoes and socks please!

FALL MUSICAL---The cast and crew of “Guys and Dolls” are working hard to make this year’s Fall Musical the best yet! Students are memorizing lines, learning songs, putting together sets and costumes, and getting ready to “WOW” you with their awesome talents! Performances of “Guys and Dolls” will be at 7:00 p.m. at the South Forsyth High School Performing Arts Center on Friday, November 12th and Saturday, November 13th. Tickets for “Guys and Dolls” will go on sale Friday, October 22nd and will be available until the performances. You can purchase tickets in the Chorus Room, the PGMS Front Office, or the SFHS Box Office the nights of the show. Tickets are $5 each and seating is General Admission; children younger than kindergarten are free. ART NOTES---There are great projects planned for our young artists this year in the Piney Grove Art Studio. YOU can help heighten our studio experience by keeping an eye out in your home and community for items that we can use. We can find a creative use for nearly anything, even items you think are discards! We recycle materials and can put them to GOOD use! Please check out our Wish List at the end of this newsletter.

ATHLETICS BASKETBALL---Congratulations to our 7th Grade Grizzly Basketball Teams. Both our guys and girls fought hard against the Otwell Bulldogs this past Tuesday to start their respective seasons off with a “W”. We wish our 8th Grade Grizzlies the best of luck this Thursday as they too take on the Bulldogs. Next week, our Grizzlies will travel to Vickery Creek on Tuesday and Thursday for mid-week games before heading to Otwell on Friday for an all-night marathon of basketball games. We hope to see many of our Grizzly fans staying this Thursday afternoon to cheer on our teams (see website for permission form) and then making the trek with us next week to our away games. Go Grizzlies! SO FORSYTH 5K/FUN RUN: SCHOOL CHALLENGE---The 4th Annual 5K benefiting Special Olympics Forsyth will be held at 8:00 a.m., Saturday, November 6th at The Avenue Forsyth. All funds will benefit the Special Olympics Forsyth Programs. The school with the most registered runners will receive the following: plaque, framed photo, photo in paper and school’s logo on the SO Forsyth website (www.soforyth.com) for the remainder of the school year. 5K Runners will be cheered by our Special Olympics Athletes. Is Your School Up For The Challenge?

ACTIVITIES SUPPORT THE JUNIOR BETA CLUB CANNED FOOD DRIVE IF YOU “CAN”---The Junior Beta Club of Piney Grove Middle School is sponsoring its 4th Annual Canned Food Drive. All food collected will go to senior citizens participating in the Meals on Wheels program of Forsyth County. The Junior Beta Club will be collecting canned goods and dried food items the week of November 8 – 12. We ask that you do not send industrial-sized cans, dented cans, or food with expired dates. The Grizzly Time on each hall that collects the most cans will earn a Chick-Fil-A breakfast. The Beta Club, with the help of our wonderful parents, will deliver this food to Meals on Wheels on Friday afternoon so that the senior citizens will receive it before the Thanksgiving holidays.

2010 VETERANS DAY CELEBRATION AT PGMS---Last year, Piney Grove hosted our inaugural Veterans Day Celebration honoring America’s Veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. We are excited to continue this annual tradition this Veterans Day, Thursday November 11, 2010. We will recognize, honor and thank any and all Veterans and men and women presently in the armed forces who are a part of our Piney Grove community. Whether these Veterans are mothers, fathers, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, neighbors, or business people in our community, we want to issue a special invitation to them to come and join us at Piney Grove on Thursday, November 11th from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. for a special breakfast in their honor and afterwards a Veterans’ Day Celebration with our entire student body and staff. We invite you, our parents, to take a little time on this special day to come join your son/daughter at our school-wide celebration at 10:00 a.m. on November 11th as we join together to honor our heroes in uniform, who have sacrificed greatly for us and have inspired us, and to whom we owe our full support and our sincerest thanks.

ACTIVITIES CONNECT WITH OUR “CYBER SAFETY” PARENT 411 SESSION---Find out what every parent needs to know to keep their child safe on the computer and cell phone! Ever have the urge to ask your child WUU2 (What are you up to?), CTC (Care to chat?), or DYNWUTB (Do you know what you are talking about?)? If you answered yes to any of these, then you will be happy to know that the Piney Grove PTSA is sponsoring “Cyber Safety” for parents that you will surely not want to miss! Wednesday, November 10, 2010, 7:00-8:00 p.m. in the PGMS Media Center, Chris Grimes, Safety Systems Specialist for the Forsyth County Schools Department of School Safety, will be the featured speaker. Mr. Grimes has been trained by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Homeland Security as an internet safety instructor. PGMS PEER LEADER SPIRIT NIGHT AT CHICK-FIL-A---Calling all PGMS families, we need your support! Come eat dinner at Chick-fil-A at the Avenue on Thursday, November 11th . Don’t forget to drop your receipt in the bucket, even if you go through the drive-thru! HOW TO KEEP UP-TO-DATE WITH ALL OF THE EXCITING EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES AT PINEY GROVE!—As a Piney Grove student, there are many academic, athletic, musical, drama, club and social events to know about and keep up with regarding what is happening at The Grove. As a Piney Grove parent, it is also very important for you to “stay in the loop” about everything that is going on at PGMS. We realize how imperative it is for everyone to be “in the know” about all the “happenings” that go on at Piney Grove each week. That is why we publish a master school calendar for the entire school year on our school website and publish the Grizzly Gazette twice a month. Both of these publications will help you keep a pulse on what is happening throughout the year. Both the Grizzly Gazette and the School Calendar can be found on our PGMS website by going to www.forsyth.k12.ga.us. For the school calendar, select “Schools” on the top toolbar; click on “Piney Grove” listed in the column under “Middle”; in the center of the page under Upcoming Events/Announcements, click on “View Calendar”. For the Grizzly

Gazette, click on “Current and Past Editions of the Grizzly Gazette” to the right on the Home page; then click on the edition you want to view. We will also be sending the Grizzly Gazette out in a “group mailing” via e-mail to all our PGMS families who have updated their e-mail address with us. The dates for when each new edition of the Grizzly Gazette will be e-mailed and published on-line at our website are listed below. We want and need all of our students and parents to stay “in the loop” with what is happening at PGMS this year!
