Grit City Tree Program

Program Information Thanks for your interest in planting trees in your neighborhood! Please fill out the information below to request a tree(s) through the Grit City Tree Program, offered through the City of Tacoma’s Department of Environmental Services, Office of Environmental Policy and Sustainability. The goal is to increase canopy cover in neighborhood right-of-ways. This program is limited by available resources; preference will be given to applications that plant large shade trees (where appropriate). Timeline

July – September 2018: Applications can be submitted until September 10, 2018. Applications received after that date will be considered but may be placed on a wait list.

September 2018: The City of Tacoma reviews applications. Confirmations will be sent to property owners with tree distribution details.

October 2018: Trees will be available at the City of Tacoma tree nursery for pick-up by individual applicants to be planted in their Right-of-Way. Trees will be delivered for neighborhood applications to be planted by the applicants in their Right-of-Way.

Options for Receiving Free Trees for your right-of-way

Individual Request Applications: 1. For individuals interested in free trees for their right-of-way, an individual property owner may submit an

application along with the “Tree Care Agreement, Including Liability Release” form included in this packet.

2. Trees need to be picked up from the City of Tacoma Tree Nursery at the Recycling and Transfer Center. Confirmation regarding dates for pick-up will be sent out at least two weeks before pick-up days.

3. Bagged TAGRO mix and woodchips will be available at the nursery on a first come, first serve basis. Once supplies run out, participants can pick up unbagged TAGRO at the main Tagro pick-up site at the Central Treatment Plant off Portland Avenue. Staff at the nursery can direct people to the TAGRO location.

Neighborhood Group Applications (Neighbors Planting Together):

1. Neighbors who can organize a tree planting that involves a minimum of 10 trees and three participating property owners within a two block distance will qualify to submit a Neighborhood Group Application.

2. Neighborhood Group Applications will have trees delivered by City of Tacoma to one designated house.

3. Neighborhood Group Applications will also receive a free delivery of TAGRO Mix and woodchip mulch. One cubic yard of both materials per 10 trees will be delivered to the designated house.

4. Neighborhood Group Applications will be eligible to compete for planting assistance from partner organizations. Planting assistance is limited by the capacity of partner organizations. Preference will be given to the Neighborhood Group Applications with the most number of trees. Please contact us directly if you feel that you or your neighbors may require this additional assistance.

5. Each individual property owner participating in the Neighborhood Group Application needs to submit an application and the “Tree Care Agreement, Including Liability Release” form included in this packet.

6. All individual neighborhood request forms should indicate the designated tree drop-off address. All individual neighborhood applications should be submitted together in one envelope.

Some things to consider as you organize your planting day:

Call 811 or 1-800-424-5555 (www.callbeforeyoudig.org) to locate underground utilities. It is required by the Underground Utilities Damage Prevention Act to call for utility locates at each location before you dig.

For Neighborhood Group Applications, confirm that neighbors can pick-up their trees and Tagro from the designated house. Confirm that everyone called 8-1-1 to have underground utilities marked.

Check that you have tools needed to plant a tree: o Shovels o Gloves o Water source, hose, buckets

Consider borrowing these optional tools: o Wheelbarrow or trashbins with wheels to move Tagro mix to each planting spot o Tarp to contain soil during planting o Post pounder for tree stakes

Important considerations: Trees provided through the Grit City Trees Program must be planted in the right of way only. The City of Tacoma Urban Forestry Program will coordinate delivery of trees, TAGRO and mulch for Neighborhood Group Submissions, but the City of Tacoma staff are unable to plant the trees. Residents and neighbors need to be able to plant and care for trees in the right-of-way. In accordance with Tacoma Municipal Code Chapter 9.17, 9.18, and 9.19, abutting property owners are allowed to landscape the planting strip and are responsible for the maintenance of the planting strip, unless otherwise specified by the City. Additionally, the full width of the sidewalk must be clear of vegetation to a height of 8 feet, so pedestrians can walk safely. The full width of the street must be clear of vegetation to a height of 14 feet, so emergency vehicles and delivery trucks have safe access.

TREE CARE AGREEMENT, INCLUDING LIABILITY RELEASE

City of Tacoma Street Tree Program

The undersigned ("Property Owner") wishes to participate in the City of Tacoma’s (City) Street

Tree Program. In consideration for receiving a free street tree and consultation services from the

City’s Urban Forester, Property Owner hereby agrees:

1. To forever release, discharge and hold City, together with its officers, directors, agents,

employees, representatives, and affiliates, and each and all of their respective successors and

assigns (collectively, the "Released Parties ") free and harmless from any and all debts,

claims, demands, damages, actions, causes of action, liabilities, losses, judgments, costs and

expenses for any reason arising out of or in any way connected to Property Owner's receipt

and planting of a street tree at _______________________ (address) including but not

limited to injury or damage incurred by Property Owner or a third party, or to Property

Owner's property, in connection with any tree(s) received and planted;

2. To covenant not to sue or otherwise bring any legal action against each and all of the

Released Parties for or on account of any claim associated with the street tree;

3. To indemnify, hold harmless and defend each and all of the Released Parties from and against

any and all claims arising out of the receipt of the street tree(s) or the planting of the street

tree(s), excepting those claims caused by the sole active negligence or willful misconduct of

the Released Parties;

4. To maintain the street tree(s), including roots, trunks, branches and leaves, so that no part of

the tree(s) causes or contributes to sidewalk defects or other hazardous conditions in the right

of way.

5. To not top, stub cut, or otherwise prune the tree trunk and/or branches in such a manner as to

permanently damage the structure of the tree, unless doing so is to specifically address

potential hazardous conditions.
