Lewis uses agape in The Four Loves to describe what he be- lieves is the highest level of love known to humanity: “a selfless love that is passionately committed to the well-being of others.” This is the love that we, as Christians, are being asked to bestow upon everyone that crosses our path. This does not mean you have to like or condone the actions of someone else. It is in fact; the love God has for us. Mother Teresa said, “Love, to be true, has to hurt. I must be willing to give whatever it takes not to harm the other people and, in fact, to do good to them. This requires that I be willing to give until it hurts. Oth- erwise, there is no love in me and I bring injustice, not peace, to those around me.” We, as followers of Christ, see things in a different way and want to behave differently. We believe that no only do we personally benefit from following Jesus’ way but that others will benefit and may even come to our point of view. Through us, the compassion of God can then be experience by people. Our world today is filled with violence, abuse, deceit, corruption often stirred up by the press and other media. We are asked to look at these through the eyes of our Christianity and react with love. What has crossed your path where you can stand up and be a witness of Chris- tian love? Can you, ask God to show you and give you the resources to respond with agape? Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

Everything You Always Wanted to Ask about Your Faith but were Afraid to Ask Contributed by Fr. Rey Sarmiento

Question:

“Fr. Rey, why do you put a piece of the bread into the chalice?”

Answer: The Priest breaks the Bread and puts a piece of the host into the chalice to signify the unity of the Body and Blood of the Lord in the work of salvation, namely, of the Body of Jesus Christ, living and glorious (Roman Missal, p. 37).

Here’s the short history. Originally, there was only one Eucharist in each city on Sunday. The entire Christian community gathered together with an apostle or one appointed in his place (a bishop). As Christianity spread, it became physically impossible for all to gather for one celebration and different Masses began to be held throughout the area. The bishop appointed priests or presbyters to preside over these gatherings.

To maintain the connection to the bishop's liturgy, a small portion of the host consecrated by the bishop was taken to each of the other Eucharistic celebrations over which priests were presiding. This piece was called the fermentum, a Latin word that means leaven. It was placed into the chalice and "commingled" with the wine.

In our liturgy, we no longer receive a piece of the bishop's host for each celebration. Instead the priest (or bish-op) breaks off a small part of the larger host used at that particular Mass and places it into the chalice saying quietly as he does so: "May this mingling of the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ bring eternal life to us who receive it."

The commingling rite is sometimes explained as symbolizing the Lord's resurrection. A body without blood is dead, but when Christ's body is "reunited" with his blood, Christ is risen. This gesture also continues to this day, being preserved probably because it is so ancient a custom.

Dear Parishioners, Art teacher and yearbook coordinator Mrs. Knight held her annual yearbook cover contest for the stu-

A 6th grader’s and a 7th grader’s entries will be featured on the front and back covers of the annual yearbook which all students receive a copy of in June. In addition, due to the great number of wonderful entries eight students in fourth through sixth grade, some working as a team, will have their entries featured inside the yearbook this year. This is the first time that this has happened. Students who submitted entries for the yearbook cover were recognized in front of the school at the weekly gathering. Now everyone cannot wait to see their year-books with this great artwork!, Welcome to DENIM & DIAMONDS, our annual Community Auc-tion/Dinner held in the Father Jim Mifsud Community Center on Saturday, March 23, 2019 from 6:00pm - 11:00pm. Looking for Help to Make the Mass Sound Great

The new PA system can be controlled via a tablet which allows the micro-phones to be controlled in real time

by a technician. A microphone’s level can now be adjusted in real time to how loudly / softly a speaker is addressing the con-gregation, so they can be heard clearly. We are starting a new ministry with volunteers who have or have 14 or more birth-days for each mass to be trained on our system and n manage the PA system during mass. If you are interested or have ques-tions, please contact Dirk Maasen [email protected] or 408-213-6510.

Can’t wait for donuts on Sun-day? Be the first to get your choice of donuts by volunteer-ing for the Donut Ministry! It’s fun and you meet some really nice people. The kids

love it too. Call to help out and you will be rewarded! Call Larry and Margie Murchan at 408–203-7747.

We lovingly pray for those in our Parish and families who can-not join us at Mass especially: Marilyn English, Loraine Rau-chle, Mary Trumbull, Ron Andresen, Arlene Barraza, Joel Rive-ra, Barbara Mertzlufft, Antonia Luna, Janet Decker, Barbara Carrillo. Please let us also pray for all our servicemen and women who serve in the Armed Forces throughout the world and remember them in our hearts today and everyday. Peacemakers A Sister of Mercy

Sr. Dorothy Stang, of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, worked alongside the poor in Brazil. She realized that the poor who were being exploited by rich loggers and cattle barons, needed her support. She trudged through mud and thick forests to prayer services and labor meetings. She was met along the trail by a hired gunmen. When asked if she had a gun, she re-plied by reading the Bible, “Blessed are the poor in spirit . . . blessed ae the peacemakers.” Then they killed her.

We remember her as Martyr of the Amazon. Her death aroused the government and the whole world to the cause of ecology and justice for which she offered her life. Quote: “I light a candle and look at Jesus on the cross and ask for the strength to carry the suffering of the people. Don’t wor-ry about my safety. The safety of the people is what’s im-portant.”
