YHQG Tuesday meetingsToronto Botanical Garden777 Lawrence Avenue East, Toronto

Next meeting: Tuesday, March 20 at 7 p.m.Speaker: Bethanne Nemesh - Walk the Creative WalkVendor: Chantal Lynch - Hyggeligt Fabrics

Upcoming meetings:April 17, May15(AGM)

YHQG is a scent-free zoneA friendly reminder to members and guests to refrain from wearing perfume when attending our meetings and workshops. Let’s be considerate - some members are highly allergic to scents. Thank you!

President’s MessageMarch is roaring in like a lion. We have been treated to a few days of spring-like weather, but winter is trying to find a way back. Spring, the season of rebirth, new growth, sunshine – it makes my insides feel alive. Brights, whites, darks, lights, saturated or diffused, all the amazing colours for our eyes to feast on! I can hardly wait to see those first crocuses, the snow drops, the tulips and even those pesky dandelions with their cheerful faces.

Quilts are like the seasons to me. Some are more sombre, providing warmth and love to the recipient and some are light and bright and make us smile. I love all the seasons but if I had to pick a type, I would say I am more a “spring” with its bright fresh colours … well … maybe a summer with its saturated strong, vibrant colours … but then there’s fall, with its warm golds and reds and oranges and not to be forgotten, winter in its monochromatic glory. Let’s face it, I just love them all. So what season do you like working with best? What makes you smile? What gets your creative juices flowing and your sewing machine all revved up?

You’ll find the membership renewal form included with this newsletter, because it’s that time of year when we ask you to renew for the next guild year. The deadline is June 30, but we have some fun incentives to prompt you to get it done early.

We have another talented quilter coming to speak at this month’s meeting: Bethanne Nemesh will inspire us with her presentation, “Walk the Creative Walk”.

Come, share, quilt!

~ Irena Hopper [email protected]

PS: We have 3 positions remaining on the executive to fill. Please see page 4 for details.

PROGRAMTuesday, March 20 at 7 p.m. Lecture: Walk the Creative WalkBethanne Nemesh http://www.whitearborquilting.com/

In March we’re delighted to welcome the multi award winning quilter Bethanne Nemesh from Pennsylvania.

Bethanne’s journey as an art quilter from her beginnings making traditional quilts, then branching out into pattern manipulation, and on to her current pictographic silk art quilts will be explored with a slide show and trunk show of her available quilts (some are with travelling exhibits and others are at current quilt shows). Bethanne will discuss how quilters can learn to recognize inspiration and then document and organize it to facilitate quilt designs.

COMMUNITY QUILTING NEWS

Our members keep sewing along! At the February meeting we received a quilted sandwich (on a long arm machine) from Erica Ray and Kathy Schofield, and a finished baby quilt by Jean Hiivala. Someone delivered two baby quilts and a quilt top (left without identification). We also received a top from a CQ kit assembled by Ashley Power. Thank you all for your contributions.

Last month, CQ was challenged to find a new meeting space that also included some storage. At the suggestion of member Charlene Hearst who, by the way, found the space at Stan Wadlow eight years ago, I reached out to the manager of the East York Community Centre (EYCC). Within ten days, a large room with some storage space was secured! It is gratifying to know that value is placed on the work that we do to create quilts for those in need and at no cost to the guild.

The format for the CQ meetings at EYCC will remain the way it has been operating for the last while. Members will work on CQ projects one Tuesday and their own work on alternate weeks. A schedule, of sorts, has already begun, with weekly emails to participants notifying them of the project for the upcoming Tuesday. All of the fabric, batting and assembled quilt top inventory is, by necessity, being stored in various members’ households at the moment. However, items such as sewing machines, cutting mats and other necessary paraphernalia are stored in a locked storage closet adjacent to the meeting room.

EYCC is located at 1081 Pape Avenue, just south of O’Connor Drive. We start at 11:15 a.m. and finish by 4 pm. Please contact Irena Hopper [email protected] if you would like to join the Tuesday sessions. Wendy Dines will lead this group.

A number of people have chosen to continue to meet on Mondays at Stan Wadlow (near Woodbine and Cosburn), with a similar schedule of doing CQ work and their own projects on alternate weeks. Please contact Irena if you would like to register. BJ Reid will lead this group. Note that you must bring any items necessary for your project to the centre every week.

What was initially a trying situation has become a win-win situation, because the opportunity to join CQ is now available to more people, with a choice of day and location.

MEMBERSHIPIt is time to start the renewal process for the upcoming 2018-19 quilting year. You will find the Membership Renewal Form included with this newsletter. Fees are due by June 30, 2018, and all those renewing by that date will receive a Guest Pass to share with a friend next year. If you renew in March, April or May you will also receive a draw ticket for prizes to be awarded at our next three meetings. The easiest way to renew is to bring your form to any of the remaining meetings, but if that is not possible just pop it in the mail to the address on the form. Save time by printing it off and completing it ahead of time. I will also have extra copies on hand at the Membership Desk. Please make cheques payable to YHQG.

Please join me in welcoming our newest member, Julie Jai, who joined in February, and many thanks to Sandra Moore and Trudy Molke for looking after the Membership Desk last month.

Don’t forget that guests are welcome at all of our meetings (except the AGM in May). The fee is $15.
