Worm Burner litter
WARRNAMBOOL breeder, Norman McCullagh has an
nice litter of nine pups on the list this week by the
brilliant sprinter and outstanding stud prospect, Worm
Burner (December 2013 Oaks Road x Little Looper,
who is still winning and closing in on his 50th win.
As at 10 October, his record stood at 80 starts, for
47 wins and 20 placings.
The six dogs and three bitches in this litter are
from the beautifully bred bitch, Strongbeth (September
2013 Nitro Burst x Flying Liddy), whose dam is by
Flying Stanley* x Crazy Jo (Trendy Leigh x Crazy
Habit).
She is from a litter of eight named, with the six
who raced winning more than 60 races, led by the
outstanding, six time group winner, Zambora Brockie.
Her contribution to the litter’ success, was eight
wins and nine placings, from her 29 starts.
She won three times over 400 metres at Geelong
(22.43), with single wins over 400 metres at Mt
Gambier (23.36), 315 metres at Traralgon (18.09), 311
metres at Cranbourne (17.88), 390 metres at Ballarat
(22.03) and 390 metres at Warrnambool (22.35).
Her damline is exceptionally strong, through her
sire under-rated sire, Nitro Burst (Bombastic Shiraz x
Hotburst), then back through Black Shiraz, Ginger,
Eaglehawk Star, Tangaloa and Temlee, which is just
about as good as it gets, ever.
ZERO TEN* litter NEXT we have a nice litter of
nine pups by the highly rated
Irish sire, Zero Ten (May 2009
Kiowa Sweet Trey* x Express
Mist, whose dam is by Honcho
Classic x Airport Express
(Roanokee x March Queen.
His combination of U.S,
Australian and Irish bloodlines make him an exciting
stud prospect.
According to my records this is only his second
litter whelped in Australia, after Two Wells breeder,
Judith Hurley, registered a litter of four dogs and four
bitches, from her well bred brood bitch, Emerley
Senorita, whelped in April this year.
Talbot breeder, Troy Scott has this litter, which
has four dogs and five bitches, from the beautifully bred
bitch, Daintree Sugar (March 2011 Bombastic Shiraz x
Daintree Lady), whose dam is by Light Of Fire x
Honchytonk Girl (Head Honcho x Tenthill Melody).
She is from a handy litter of four named, all
winners, which included Coral, Daintree Arcade and
Daintree Mustang, with the four, winning 25 races
between them.
She raced 95 times, for seven wins and 19
placings, winning over 595 metres at Sandown (34.89),
600 metres at The Meadows (35.09), 513 metres at
Traralgon (30.37), 520 metres at Cranbourn (30.90) and
440 metres (25.25), 520 metres (30.02) and 650 metres
(38.06) at Sale.
She has one lightly raced named offspring on file,
from her December 2015 litter of four dogs and four
bitches, by Paddy Whacker*, named Chaddy Whacker,
who is already a winner.
Her litter sister Coral has proved herself as a
producer as well, with winners from both of her first
two litters.
Her November 2014 litter, by El Grand Senor,
produced Blue Reef, Fortune Favours, Grand Maximus,
Miller’s Court, Red Hot Fox, Rosanna and Tristesse.
She then whelped a September 2015 litter, by
Barcia Bale, which includes, Boil Over, Kid Ringo,
Nareen, Oleg and Sergei.

Revised Prize Money & Breeding
Sustainability Package
Following the valuable feedback received from the ICG,
Clubs, GOTBA and other stakeholders on options for
distributing additional prize money, GRV has revised its
proposal to provide for a more equitable distribution of
the increased prize money and additional funds to
stimulate breeding with the new package comprising of:
$2.55M p.a. to be added to minimum prize money; and
1.40M p.a. in new prize money and bonuses available to
be shared between owners and breeders of VicBred
greyhounds in a new Sustainable Breeding Package
The original proposal to increase trainers’ starters fees to
$80 per runner has now been removed from the package.
The new prize money proposal will mean Travel &
Starters’ Fees remain at their current levels of $70 per
trainer plus $10 per starter at all meetings. Two prize
money package options are now under consideration
which focus directly on increasing prize money to be
shared between owners and trainers at the lower levels of
racing.
The increases are to be implemented from 1 November
2017. All Vic Bred greyhounds of all ages will be
eligible immediately for the Breeding Package with no
nomination fees payable to be eligible.
Full details of the prize monay and breeding
sustainability package can be found at:

THIS week’s review of litters from the NSW Whelping
Report for the week ending 11 June starts with a litter
of six pups by Banjo Boy (April 2011 Vee Man Vane x
Off Springer).
Registered by Bathurst breeder, Tanya
Nieuwendyk, the four dogs and two bitches are from
the well bred, unraced bitch, Avondale Dancer
(November 2012 Mogambo x Avondale Miss), whose
dam is by Elite State x Miss Teddy Mint (Go Wild
Teddy x Franklin Mint).
She is from a litter of six named, of which the
five who raced, won 14 races between them.
She has five named offspring on file from her
first litter, all winners, Coolbes Valley, Manilla Traffic,
Metro Manilla, Oren Ishii and Thrilla Manilla, who
were whelped in May 2015, by Fabregas.
Two Barcia Bale litters TWO litters on the list this week by leading national
sire, Barcia Bale, March 2010 (Go Wild Teddy x
Princess Bale).
Molong breeder, Toby Weekes, has the first of
the two litters, which has three dogs and six bitches,
from the well bred, Group 1 placegetter, Kerrigan Bale
(July 2012 High Earner x Maple Bale), whose dam is
by Spiral Nikita* x Vista Bale (Golden Currency x
Luana Bale) and worth recalling, Luana Bale is by
Grove Whisper* x Red Fire Bale.
She is from a very good litter of nine named,
whoall won, with 89 race wins between them, lead by
the prolific winner, Lamia Bale, who won 23 times
with 19 placings, from 80 starts.
Kerrigan Bale raced 53 times, for 14 wins and 17
placings, winning five times over 525 metres at The
Meadows (29.69), four times over 515 metres at
Sandown (29.48), three times over 520 metres at
Wentworth Park (29.73) and also over 450 metres at
Ballarat (25.39) and 520 metres at Cranbourne (30.12).
She ran third in the Group 1 Paws Of Thunder
final, third in the Group 1 Sandown Laurels and was a
finalist in the Group 1 National Futurity.
She has two named offspring from her first litter,
whelped in December 2015, by Brett Lee, then has a
litter of two dogs and five bitches on file, by KC And
All*, whelped in October 2016.
Trevor Thompson, from North Lismore has the
other Barcia Bale litter, which unfortunately has just
the one bitch pup, from the well bred bitch, Tarks
Black Rose (February 2017 Oaks Road x Hot Spur),
whose dam is by Bombastic Shiraz x Skrat (Big Daddy
Cool x Dash Of Burgundy).
Brett Lee litters BRAIDWOOD breeders, the
Truclass Racing Syndicate have a
nice litter of nine pups on the list
this week that should create plenty
of interest, by former champion
sprinter and successful international
sire, Brett Lee (January 1999 Gun
Law Osti x Sobbing Sal).
Brett Lee died on 29 August
2010, so every litter which comes
through must be closing in on the
end of the semen stored before he
died.
The three dogs and six bitches in this litter, are
from the beautifully bred bitch, Saint Tifi (March 2011
Where’s Pedro x Tifi), whose sire was of course, by
Brett Lee x Elusive Rebel) and her dam by Bombastic
Shiraz x Chili Berger (Elle’s Commando x Alice
Dooley).
Saint Tifi is from a litter of eight named, who all
raced and won, winning 79 races between them, led by
Double Twist, 26 wins, Glama Pak, 13 wins, Stiff Arm,
12 wins and Somebody Tifi and Tifi For Me, with ten
wins each.
She was lightly raced, with just 15 starts, from
which she won twice, with two placings, winning over
520 metres at Nowra (30.43) and 400 metres at Bulli
(22.55).
She was reported to have started her career on par
with Double Twist but injury forced her early
retirement.
She has winning offspring on file from her first
litter, whelped in January 2015, by Collision, then has a
litter of three dogs and six bitches on file, by Zulu
Zeus, whelped in September 2015.
Certainly plenty to like about this litter,
particularly with future breeding in mind.

GRV NEGATIVITY PUTS INDUSTRY AT RISK
By Bruce Teague
Editor….
For just the second time ever, Victoria (GRV) has
officially recognised that it is running out of
greyhounds. A few weeks ago GRV announced it
would be recasting programs to better cater for the
declining demand. This week it made a formal appeal to
trainers and others to bring marginal racers to the track
to fill all the empty boxes. In both cases the reference is
to slow dogs which would not otherwise make the
grade.
While GRV has guaranteed no overall loss of
races, it is promising an increase in prize money by the
end of the year, implying that more cash in flowing into
the till. Fewer dogs and more money don’t quite fit
together but we will have to wait and see. Meantime,
there are overlapping influences.
1. For over a decade the Australian greyhound
population has been falling and the proportion of pups
in each litter making it to the track has been rising.
While 2016 official figures are scarce those trends
appear to have intensified recently.
2. In the last few years, lower grade events have started
appearing on major city programs and from 2010 cut
price races for slower dogs (Tier 3, Class C, etc)
bolstered or replaced normal TAB meetings.
3. The proportion of all races which are run over 400m
or less has been steadily rising and some short trips
have been freshly added to club programs (Albion Park,
Lismore, Angle Park). This trend is consistent with (1)
and (2) above.
4. In 2015 and 2016 alleged over-breeding was
identified by four inquiries, some state CEOs and GA
as the root cause of what was seen as excessive
euthanasia rates. Clearly, they were all wrong, which is
not surprising as they all failed to study the subject
properly or at all. Current GRV actions confirm the
problem.
5. Post live baiting, GRV (and others) elected to cut out
all breeding subsidies although, paradoxically, GRV
continued with races limited to “VicBred” dogs. The
combined effects of live baiting and cancelled subsidies
would certainly have discouraged some intending
breeders. (Whether those subsidies were sensible in the
first place is a different question again).
6. In all likelihood, government-enforced cost increases
will ensure NSW runs out of money in the medium
term and will have to cut back racing. That will prompt
an even greater shift of dogs to the south than has
occurred in the past. Temporarily, that may help
Victoria a little.
It is therefore obvious that the dog shortage is a man-
made problem, partly due to foolish live baiting
practices, partly due to overreaction by governments,
but mostly due to ineffective policies from state
authorities. But now GRV has created a new and even
bigger problem. The impact of all these changes is to
further reduce average field quality. Bottom level dogs
don’t all stay there but gradually filter through to
normal graded races – and so on up the scale (which is
why we have already seen standards drop at major city
venues).
Excellence has become a dirty word. Any old dog will
be able to get a run. That may help reduce euthanasia
numbers marginally but it will come at a cost. Serious
punters will be even more dismayed because you can’t
bet well on bad dogs. So the already significant trend
towards income from mug gamblers in pubs and clubs
will continue or perhaps accelerate. The existing poor
public image of the industry will persist. Not a happy
outcome.
The solution? Well, it is hard to see any magic wands
being waved. However, a light at the end of the tunnel
could emerge when or if the existing state racing
bureaucracies are replaced by livewire commercial
managers.
The status quo is never an answer – forwards or
backwards are the only options.
Bruce Teague.

Race 8 - 2017 UBET Adelaide Cup
(G1) F CT… 8:58 PM
UBET Adelaide Cup Final 515m October 7, 2016. Angle Park GRSA First Prize $75,000 Winner: Aqua Cheetah (Cosmic Rumble x Dalta Bale) Born: March 2014 Red Fawn Dog Owner: Mark Morgan. Trainer: Jason Thompson. Time: 29.41. Margins: 2 x 1. Others in finishing order: Worm Burner, Dyna Boomer, Weekend Binge, Shima Song, Benteke, One For Me, Mrs Bubbles
Can Worm Burner win the Adelaide Cup this year
after finishing fourth in the race last year behind
Aqua Cheetah.
He has now raced 80 times for 47 wins, 10
seconds and 10 thirds with stake earnings to date of
$377.945.
He is the undisputed king of Angle Park, having
won 13 races in a row there midway through last year.
He has been doing his racing in Victoria of late,
until last week when he returned home for the cup
heats, beating High Eden Snow by 4.75 lengths,
stopping the clock at 29.59.
He has a P.B of 29.17 on the track, which far better
than any of his rivals in this year’s Cup.
The box draw hasn’t made it any easier for him
either, but there is little doubt he is more than capable
of taking the crown this year.
He is certain to be the sentimental favourite if not
top pick in the betting order as well.
Cameron and Yvonne Butcher, who own and
trained him for most of career, certainly deserve the
win, as does.
It would be a fitting reward for a brilliant career
as he heads to s blossoming career at stud.

performances
DUTCH LEGACY
Black & white bitch (March 2016, Dyna Double One
x Majestic Seine).
Raced by the Western Front Syndicate and
trained for them at Melton West by Wayne Kirk.
Raced for the first time at Sandown (SAP) on 8
October, from box three, over 515 metres.
Beaten 8.63 lengths in the race won by Lhotse
(30.24) but that was a handy run and an indication that
he is likely to win his share of races.
SHE’S CRACKERS
White & black bitch (April 2015, Cape Hawke x
Jamaican Ruby).
Raced and trained at Ecklin South, by Peter
Fulton.
Lightly raced with just 15 starts to date, for four
placings.
Set a task when handy third over 715 metres at
Sandown (SAP) on 8 October, beaten 8.79 lengths in
the race won by Jobe’s Return (42.70), who had been
placed over 725 metres at The Meadows three starts
earlier.
She’s Crackers was placed over 545 metres at
Ballarat on 11 September, then unplaced three times
over 525 metres at The Meadows, 600 metres at Mt.
Gambier and 545 metres at Ballarat again, before the
Sandown run.
Showed enough last start to show she’s not far
off picking up a race somewhere.
FRED DAGG
Fawn dog, (February 2015 Cosmic Chief Token
Breeze).
Raced by the Soneri Syndicate and trained for
them at Crossover, by Neville Haigh.
Raced 14 times now for a win and seven
placings and is not far off another win.
Handy second, beaten by a length over 515
metres at Sandown (SAP) on 8 October, in the race
won by Jim’s Hotel (30.07).
Prior to that had three consecutive placings, over
350 metres at Healesville and 460 metres at Warragul.
Has won over 460 metres at Warragul (26.52,
B26.15) back on 22 June.
Sandown run was step up in class and distance
and he handled it well, so I’ll be looking for him next
time.

Bred to Win
The TAB Great Chase series brings together Victoria’s greyhound racing community
and disability sector, with the state’s 13 race clubs hosting community days between
2 August and 25 October. The community days are social outings for around 100
groups of the intellectually and physically disabled and their carers. They also have
the chance to share in a pool of $50,000.
Meanwhile, more than $200,000 will be spread among greyhound racing participants
from the racing component of the series, which runs from
October 6-25.

FLEAS
Fleas are the most common external parasite of
dogs. Even the best-kept dogs can be infested with
fleas, especially if they regularly leave their
property. Left untreated the infestation quickly
becomes a much bigger problem and can lead to other
things such as tapeworm infection, anaemia (low red
cells in the blood) and skin conditions such as flea
allergy dermatitis.
At the track, the on-track veterinarian will be on the
look-out for fleas, and infested greyhounds will be
scratched from racing and sent home. It’s such a pity
to have the dog just right, make the field and get
scratched going over the table because your dog has
fleas.
But I bathed the dog
Many dog owners and trainers think that simply
bathing their dog will solve the problem, but this is not
the case. To understand how to truly keep on top of
fleas, you first need to understand their lifecycle.
Fleas are a little bit like a mosquito in that they feed on
blood. Without a feed of blood, they are unable to
mature and lay their eggs. So to the flea, your
greyhound is simply a moving restaurant – they jump
on, have a feed, leave and then lay their eggs and
die. The majority of the flea lifecycle takes place away
from the dog – in the bedding, kennels, or even in the
carpet of your house if your dogs come inside. So what
you see on the dog is only the tip of the iceberg.
How does the dog get fleas in the first place?
Even if your property is completely flea-free, your dogs
can become infested if fleas are brought onto the
property. This can be via a new dog coming into the
kennels, through straw-type bedding (often infested
from rabbits that live in hay sheds), or from yours or
the neighbour’s cat that has been off wandering and has
picked up a few fleas on their travels. Dogs, cats and
rabbits all share the same fleas. Your dog may also
pick up fleas when off your property.
The flea simply jumps onto the dog as it goes
past. Once on the dog, the flea will usually head
towards the rear, often spending most of the time in the
hair above the base of the tail. This is why the best
place to look for fleas is in this area, or in the less hairy
parts of the dog such as the belly area or inside the
thighs. Seeing fleas with the naked eye can be hard as
they don’t like light, so if you part the dog’s hair the
fleas will scramble into the dark areas.
Sometimes the only thing you will see is ‘flea-
dirt’. This is simply the waste matter the flea passes
out after digesting its meal. Flea dirt looks like normal
grains of dark dirt in the coat, but if you wet it, it
dissolves and turns a reddish colour. Similarly, if you
are bathing the dog, and the water hits the flea dirt, it
will turn into a reddish stain. If there is flea dirt, there
are fleas, whether you can see them or not.
What happens once the flea is on the dog?
Once on the dog, they start feeding. The flea will suck
blood from the dog, injecting saliva as they do it. This
flea saliva can cause allergic reactions in some dogs,
and they will quickly start to bite and scratch at
themselves – similar to a person who is allergic to
mosquito bites. This can lead to severe coat problems,
dermatitis, and damage to the skin from biting and
scratching.
Once the flea has had its meal of blood, it will start to
lay eggs which simply drop off the dog. Each flea can
lay hundreds of eggs, and these eggs can survive in the
environment for quite a long time (even years) and are
quite hard to kill. Because the eggs drop off the dog,
common places for egg infestation are bedding, resting
areas, and kennels – all places where dogs spend a lot
of time.
Hatching of the eggs occurs when the temperature and
humidity is right. The hatching can also be triggered
by vibration. This explains why people who move into
an empty house that has previously had pets often end
up with flea bites – their movement triggers the eggs to
hatch and the fleas have no pets to jump onto, and end
up biting the people instead!
Flea eggs hatch into larva, which look similar to a
microscopic maggot. They are not as tough as the
eggs, and need warm, humid conditions to mature. The
larvae then spin a little cocoon for themselves and turn
into the next lifecycle stage – the pupae. The pupae
can survive for months before hatching into adult fleas,
so even if you think you have got rid of all the adult
fleas, you will still have pupae waiting to hatch when
the conditions are right.

FLEAS Continued
How long does it take? The whole lifecycle of the flea – from adult to eggs to
adult can take as little as 2 weeks in the warm, humid
months, meaning one flea can turn into hundreds which
can turn into thousands in under a month! That is why
flea problems tend to be worst in the spring and
summer months when the weather is just right.
What should I do to keep my dogs flea-free?
Only 5% of the flea problem is adult fleas on the dog,
so the only way to be successful in controlling fleas is
to address the environmental infestation as well. In the
past, people used flea combs to remove the adult fleas
from the dog’s coats, but when the dog goes back to its
kennel it gets re-infested.
Similarly, bathing the dog with a flea shampoo, or
using a flea rinse will certainly kill the fleas on the dog
at the time of the bath and rinse them from the coat, but
it will do nothing to stop the dog becoming re-
infested. Add to this, many of the ‘old-fashioned’ flea
rinses are quite toxic, and there is little point to using
them if you want to truly solve the problem.
These days there are many ‘spot-on’ products that not
only kill the fleas on the dog when applied, but go on
working to kill the fleas for up to a month. This can
work quite well as you are basically using the dog to
clean the environment – the eggs hatch, the fleas jump
on and die, no new eggs are laid. The environmental
store of eggs gradually all hatch and you end up with
reduced environmental contamination. There are also
products that have an added ingredient that stops the
eggs from hatching. The product crystallizes and small
crystals fall off into the dog’s bedding and elsewhere,
causing any eggs there to become sterile.
Finally, addressing the environmental contamination
can also reduce the burden. Regularly vacuuming
carpets will remove eggs, but remember to empty the
vacuum bag into the bin as the eggs will still be alive in
the bag. Regularly washing dog blankets and bedding
in hot water for more than 10 minutes, or completely
replacing carpet used in the kennels will also keep the
environment cleaner. Avoid giving your dogs access to
areas such as under the house, where the humidity and
temperature are right for a fast flea lifecycle and where
cleaning is almost impossible.
Finally, make sure that any new dogs coming onto your
property are treated for fleas. Treating the arriving dogs
yourself with a good quality flea product will ensure
you keep the fleas away. Ask your greyhound
veterinarian for advice on which products would best
suit your kennel.
