GREYFRIARSnewsSEPTEMBER - DECEMBER 2019 www.greyfriarsringwood.org.uk

Busy Bees! There was a real buzz at Greyfriars over the Summer months, a hive of activity! Please read our President’s report for more news!Unexpected and unwelcomed was the cancellation of the Ellingham Show. However, due to quick thinking on the part of caterer, Teresa Sillers and the speed of SocialMedia, Greyfriars stepped up to the challenge of hosting hundreds of disappointedpeople. If we didn’t have such a dynamic Community Centre all would definitelyhave been lost. This serves as a reminder to the importance of supporting Greyfriars in what everway that may be....one way would be to take out an annual membership, detailsare below and we wish to take this opportunity to thank all our life members for theirongoing support. In the months ahead, we are planning three more events; a Cheese & WineEvening with a difference on the 12th October, a Murder Mystery Night on the 9thNovember staged by Burley Players and food by South Coast Parties and then onthe 30th November a Christmas Fair alongside the annual Christmas Show fromthe local Forest Forge Theatre Company.Look out for the flyers and information on our website, but please do come alongand support these events - we really do think there will be something for everyone!Tickets are now available. Many new ventures are happening at Greyfriars from September too, including achoir for people who think they can’t sing, more pop up restaurant Saturdaybrunches and Sunday lunches, a new evening Writer’s Workshop, Mini First Aid,Yoga for Mums and Babies, even a Wedding Fair after Christmas … and lots more!

SUMMER AT GREYFRIARS has beenfantastic and one to remember with some-thing for everyone - AFashion Showdelighted the ladies; Philatelists enjoyedRingpex;Pre-Schoolchildren broughttheir teddies to theTeddy Bear’s Picnic;Senior Citizens were invited toAfter-noon Tea with magic and music; almost1000 books were bought by booklovers attheBook Sale;around 1010 people en-joyed drama, dancing, wine and canapésat the RMDSSummer Show;art loversdelighted at the Ringwood Art Society’sSummer Exhibition and thePamperand Craft Showincluding a food court, beauty treatments, jewellery, crafts andmuch more was enjoyed by all who at-tended.Each event was highly successful -sincere thanks to RMDS, Ringwood ArtSociety, Ringwood Philatelic SocietyGreyfrars Pre-School, our Managers andthe many volunteers who worked so hardto give us all such pleasure.

CONGRATULATIONS!Welcomes and farewells...

Firstly I would like, on behalf of all atGreyfriars, towelcomeour new Treasurer,Dave Shering who has agreed to take therole over from Bruce.Bruce came to the centre at a time of greatchange and has, over the years, given histime, wisdom and support above andbeyond that expected from the role andwe shall be forever indebted to him for histime here at Greyfriars.

We are greatly looking forward to gettingto know Dave and hope that he will behappy here continuing the support andexpertise that we appreciate so greatly.Farewellto Chris Wightman who hasdecided to retire after 40 years of runninghis Playreading Group. We thank himmost sincerely for his commitment to thegroup and wish him well. Also to Denise Delaney who retires after12 years volunteering - serving coffees onFriday mornings in the coffee lounge. Shewill be greatly missed for her willingness, organisation and smiles - especially by theStudy Group! Thank you Denise.

A reminderthat tickets are now on sale forthe Grand Draw, here are lots of super prizesso please support it. Last year we made£1,300.00 which is a good contributiontowards the running costs of Greyfriars.

LET’S BEAT THAT FIGURETHIS YEAR!

Greyfriars remains at the heart of the com-munity, it has so much to offer everyonewith a wide and interesting range of clubs, classes, study groups, activities andevents.

A warm welcome awaits you.To find out more visit our website

If you wish to join our mailing list and are not on it, please email us andwe can add you easily.Reminders- Membership fees due on the 1st September 2019-a slight increase to £14.00 for a single membership and £26.00 for a joint member-ship. FINANCE Dave Shering

Hi my name is Dave Shering and I amdelighted to have been asked to take overthe Treasurer role here at Greyfriars fromBruce Dawson who has done an amazingjob for many years and certainly leavesvery large boots to fill.My wife and I moved to Ringwood in1993 and have lived in Hightown sincethen. I have 2 grown up daughters whoboth made extensive use of Greyfriars, through the New Forest Ballet School, and I undertook many ‘taxi’ trips in mytime to and from the Car Park on theirbehalf!I worked in Banking for 35 years and I amnow working part time which allows methe time to undertake this role and I amalso a Governor at Ringwood School.I look forward to working with the otherCommittee Members together with Claireand her amazing team of Staff andVolunteers to ensure Greyfriars remains athriving and vibrant part of the Ringwoodcommunity.

TLCLike a much loved but ageing antique,Greyfriars needs lots of TLC (tender lovingcare) to keep it fresh and in good order.Due to sterling work by our team of skilfuland dedicated caretakers, and with helpas needed from a number of excellentspecialist tradesmen, we are able to keepon top of the TLC demands! We haverecently carried out our annual survey ofthe building fabric and produced a sched-ule of items requiring attention over thecoming months. In addition to this routineinspection we have been made aware thatour fire protection system is in need ofupdating to comply with modern standards.Items of note are :Overflow car park. Repairs to weakenedareas recently completed.External Decorations.A number of areasrequiring painting have been identified, including the front entrance portico, ga-rage doors and facias.Internal Decorations. One of our morerecent clients is contributing to the cost ofre-decoration of the Hilary Christyroom, which will take place in the Autumn. Wewill also be doing some re-decoration inother parts of the premises, some in-house, some using a contractor.Bench Seats.Under our supervisionyoung people working with theYoung Citi-zens programme have recently carried outre-painting of all our wooden benches on

the lawn and in the courtyard, making atremendous difference to their appearance.Activities Centre.Another of our more re-cent clients, Kings Church, has offered tofund new curtains and internal redecora-tion of the Activity Centre. This offer ismuch appreciated indeed!Additional room for hire.We are in theprocess of re-furbishing a small storeroomin Greyfriars House to provide additionalhire space and income.WindowsSome work will be carried outover the winter to repair and re-decoratethe windows in Greyfriars House. Thisunfortunately requires a considerableamount of associated time-consuming redtape with the Local Authority Planners.Fire ProtectionAs mentioned above, ourattention has been drawnto the need to update ourFire Protection system.Although our managementsystem was described bythe Fire Officer who lastinspected our premises as“Exemplary” times changeand we need to keep rightup to date.Detailed surveys have been commissionedand quotations sought for this work.

From the above you will, I hope, appreciatethat maintenance of the premises is anever-ending task, but the collectivededication of our Managers Claire andAnne, caretakers and trades peopleensures that we stay on top of things.

BUILDING & HOUSE Alastair Duncan

Thank you to all the young volunteers for sprucing up the benches around the Centre.

A New Face InThe Office

Greyfriars office welcomes Sam Daviesinto a new role as Minibus Administratorsolely taking care of our communityminibuses.Sam will be available each morning from8-11 to answer queries, take bookings andcomplete all organisational tasks relatedto the minibuses. Good luck Sam!

We are looking forwardto seeing our minibusesout and about a lot more!

Winchester isproving a very popular choice with bothold and new members who are all lookingforward to a fun weekend of bridge, andperhaps some early Christmas shopping. In July we celebrated the birthday of ouroldest member, Eileen, who is 98 yearsyoung proving, if proof were needed, thatyou are never too old or too young toenjoy a game of bridge.

In June theRingwood Table Tennis Club held a friendly Handicap CharitySingles Tournament in aid of SSAFA, the Armed Forces Charity.

It was the first charity event the club has held and, tomake the evening more fun, all players had to use old

Sadly, Chris Wightman has, for personal reasons, stepped down asleader of the first Playreading Group which was launched over 40years ago. Despite his professional commitment to Poole College aslecturer in modern languages, he directed the Group for almost all thattime.  Undoubtedly this is a track record for any community! He recommended his readers to join my group but, regrettably, theyall seem to have found alternative ventures, so I’m appealing for newreaders to join the existing half dozen in my group. No prior experience is required, just a willingness to express feelings when representing whatever character appears inthe chosen playset.  Imagine a BBC radio play:  we just sit around a table and make theplay (whether it’s a 19th century classic, Chekhov, Wilde etc or the subtle comedies ofAlan Bennett) come alive between 2.00 & 4.00pm every WednesdayI look forward to hearing from you – Russell Webb (01425 476618)

I’ve been told that my brain is a muscle,So it should be quite easy to train.

I’ve read many books – done crosswordsgalore!

Some wisdom and learning to gain. There must be lots of room for expansion.

The brain has no boundaries it seems. It might do what it’s told in the daytime,

But may not make sense in your dreams.I can’t say that, as I’m getting older,

I feel I have learned quite a lot. What I know is a drop in the ocean,

Compared with those eggheads who swot.I still try to expand on my knowledge.

Though really is it now in vain? As, like a piece of worn out elastic,

The stretch has gone out of my brain.Copyright Dawn D’Arcy 2019
