CITY winger Scott Wagstaff had agood feeling about the long trip toBrunton Park even before he scoredhis fourth goal of the season to se-cure a first league win in nearlyeight months.

And no wonder – the Cumbrianoutpost is fast becoming the2 3 - ye a r- o l d ’s lucky ground.

A member of a Charlton side thatcame from behind to beat Carlisle 4-3at the start of his career, Wagstaffexperienced the joy of winning pro-motion from League One when re-turning with the Addicks a yearl at e r.

“I’ve had some good times at thisg round,” said Wagstaff, pic-tured, whose stunning71st-minute strike helpedCity end their long se-quence without aleague win.

“I remember com-ing here with Charl-ton for the first time;we were three up, theypegged us back to 3-3and then we scored alast-minute winner.

“Then we beat them 1-0 attheir place to be promoted a couple of

seasons. There were great celebra-tions that day and the place has

fond memories for me.“It may be a long wayaway, but I love playing

there and the journeywas definitely worth-wh i l e. ”

Match-winner JayEmmanuel-Thomas ded-

the foot of the League One tableand sent 364 hard-core fans home

happy. “That one’s for the fans,” saidEmmanuel-Thomas, who emergedfrom the dressing room clutching thematch ball.

He became the first City player toscore a hat-trick in a competitivematch since Phil Jevons shot downGillingham in an FA Cup tie wayback in 2006.

“It felt great to be able to go over tothat side of the ground and celebratewith them afterwards.”

BRISTOL City’s talismanicforward, Jay Em-manuel-Thomas, frustratesand delights in equal meas-ure. As if to prove the point,

he missed an open goal and turned ina performance way beneath his ownhigh standards in defeat at Crewe lastweek, prompting some Robins fans toeven question his presence in headcoach Sean O’Driscoll’s startingl i n e - u p.

Seven days later, and the formerArsenal man produces the kind ofemphatic response that really oughtto silence his doubters for some con-siderable time to come. But thenthose are the inconsistencies thatdefine a player who has divided opin-ion throughout his career.

When Emmanuel-Thomas is good,he can be very good. Just ask CarlisleUnited, who were blown away by hishat-trick and a great strike from ScottWagstaff, all four goals deliveredwithin a 34-minute spell in the secondhalf that could yet redefine City’sseason.

Trailing to Sean O’H a n l o n’s24th-minute header and 1-0 down atthe break, the visitors were forced toconfront the unpalatable prospect ofbeing cut adrift at the foot of theLeague One table, potentially fivepoints from safety.

Tentative at times on the opening45 minutes, the Robins failed to winenough second balls to deter a Carl-isle side that enjoyed the upper handin midfield and deserved to be inf ro n t .

Encouraged by O’Driscoll and hisassistant, John Pemberton, City’splayers emerged for the second halfwith an altogether more positivemind-set and set about imposingthemselves on proceedings for thefirst time.

The results were almost instant-aneous, Emmanuel-Thomas stoopingto conquer from a close-range headerlaid on a proverbial plate for him byright-back Brendan Moloney, whoworked wonders to keep the ball inplay and then deliver a tellingc e n t re.

Proving the old adage that goalschange games, Carlisle reacted badlyand the Robins, their tails up, scoredanother goal within two minutes tofundamentally alter the complexionof the game and effect a dramaticswing in the balance of power.

Deployed in an attacking role be-

Attack proves to be the best form of defence for CityCarlisle vs Bristol City | Brunton Park, Saturday, October 26

hind the strikers, Bobby Reidpowered forward and slipped an as-tute pass inside to Em-manuel-Thomas, whose ownparticular version of the soft-shoeshuffle carried him clear of the cov-ering defence and invited him to beatkeeper Mark Gillespie from 15 yardsout.

Confidence now coursing throughtheir veins, City’s young players re-fused to sit back and protect theirlead, something they attempted

without success in previous games atPort Vale and MK Dons. Instead, theykept their foot on the pedal, con-tinued to force the home side onto theback foot and were rewarded whenWagstaff controlled a lofted pass fromthe increasingly influential Em-manuel-Thomas on his chest andfound the far top corner of the netwith a breath-taking half volley thatowed as much to renewed belief as itdid to sound technique.

Even when Liam Noble pulled agoal back 11 minutes from time, thevisitors kept going forward and Em-manuel-Thomas completed his firstsenior treble to put the seal on a firstLeague win in 22 games dating backto March 9.

Having already scored with hishead and right foot, he netted with hisleft foot after being set-up by sub-stitute Joe Bryan and holding offO’Hanlon. His was the completes t r i ke r ’s hat-trick and proved beyond

doubt that a team seemingly incap-able of keeping clean sheets desper-ately needs a maverick influencewithin its ranks.

This long-overdue result not onlylifts City off the foot of the table and towithin three points of safety ahead ofback-to-back home games againstOldham Athletic and Crawley Town,it also relieves some of the pressureon O’Driscoll and City’s board of dir-ectors, who have continued to backhim in the face of poor results.

One win does not make a season, but it is at least a start and offers ayoung team something tangible tobuild on now that they have finallyshed the stigma of the longest winlessrun in the entire Football League.

Although they celebrated wildly atthe final whistle, City’s supportershave suffered for long enough to real-ise the importance of keeping theirfeet on terra-firma this week.

How can they do otherwise whenthe defensive frailties that have doneso much to undermine their teamthis season still persist?

O’Driscoll has sought to perfect thebalance between defence and attack, yet his team continues to concede softgoals. Without a clean sheet inLeague One this term, the Robinswere again found wanting when con-fronted by set-piece routines.

This persistent failing re-emergedwith calamitous results when JamesBerrett swung over a corner andO’Hanlon rose unchallenged to headin at the far post.

And Carlisle’s second goal was alsothe product of a momentary loss ofconcentration, Noble being allowedtime and space to pick his spot from22 yards out.

But then this was one of thoseoccasions when the result was moreimportant than the performance andCity can be forgiven their shortcom-ings in defence this once. City’s hat-trick hero Jay Emmanuel-Thomas lets fly to score his side’s first goal Pictures: Dougie Allward

IT’S taken 13 games this seasonand 22 games in total, but Sat-urday it finally happened asBristol City managed a victoryin the league. Following anothertrying week for Sean O'Driscolland his players, not too manyhad expected City to claim allthree points away from homeagainst Carlisle.

City’s head coach recalledfit-again Ryan Taylor to thestarting line-up and kept faithwith Jay Emmanuel Thomas.JET has been off his game thelast couple of weeks and I'll bethe first to admit that I wouldhave rested the former Arsenaland Ipswich forward, having feltthat accommodating JET wasproving to be too much of acompromise to the team shape.

Let's be clear, one swallowdoes not make a summer, andO'Driscoll's job as head coachmust still be in question.

Following the defeat to Brent-ford in midweek, O'Driscollsomewhat lost his cool whenbeing asked if he was still up forthe fight. Now I find his post andpre-match comments dull to saythe least, but he had spent fiveminutes defending his playersand talking about the positivesfrom the Brentford game and theinterviewer did ask a questionthat was obvious to those thathad listened to what had beensaid before.

I felt it was a stupid questionand O'Driscoll's response in it-self showed that he was up forthe fight and yet he was stillpushed. The interviewer wanteda sound-bite and headline and soI can understand him pressing.

After all was said and done, itonly highlighted the pressurethat O'Driscoll is under and itwas no surprise that assistantcoach John Pemberton came outand handled the media after theCarlisle game.

I would have been really sur-prised to see O'Driscoll in chargenow, despite everything that hasbeen said by Jon Lansdown if wehad not secured the victory onS at u rd ay.

While things may be movingin the right direction off thepitch, we have struggled on itand the fans’ patience is wearingthin. When we conceded in thefirst half, it looked like the writ-ing may be on the wall. Pem-berton came out after the gameand admitted that the team hadnot played well in the first halfand got a verbal volley fromO'Driscoll during the interval.

The team responded andscored four great second-halfgoals, with JET scoring his firstprofessional hat-tick and ScottWagstaff scoring the goal of theg ame.

We need to take the second 45minutes into next week’s homegame and push forward.

Massive praise to all of thosewho made the long trip north,it's a journey I have made and it'srewarding that those fans werethe ones who got to see the teamwin after so long. Congratula-tions to O'Driscoll, his staff andthe players. Now let's see how wetake this forward.

ALEFE Santos providedstrong evidence that Roversare building the right men-tality into their young play-ers, as well as nurturing

some exciting talent.Known as Alfie within the club, the

18-year-old winger found himself upagainst a veteran of more than 600League games in 35-year-old Chester-field left-back Ritchie Humphreys.

The former Hartlepool United stal-wart is still a formidable player atLeague Two level and emerged froman intriguing duel with plenty ofc re d i t .

What impressed about Santos wasthat he never got disappointed if hisend product was less than threat-ening and remained ready to take onan opponent nearly twice his age atevery opportunity right up to thefinal whistle.

It would have been easy to shirkthat responsibility and take the op-tion of more safe passes. Instead,

Santos followed to the letter the ad-vice of manager John Ward just be-fore kick-off.

“I told Alfie not to worry if his firstcross flew behind the goal or gotblocked, but to just keep on trying toget balls into the box,” said theRovers boss. “He is a quiet kid, but avery good listener and he showed hehad something about him today.”

Ward was sufficiently impressed to

Battling Rovers showa real fighting spirit

Bristol Rovers vs Chesterfield | Memorial Stadium, Saturday, October 26

leave Santos on for the whole of thegame when it would have been easy tosubstitute him in the effort to protecta point in the closing stages.

Faith in his youngsters is part ofthe experienced manager’s make-upand he is as concerned about de-veloping the right attitudes as im-proving the skills of his rookiep ro f e s s i o n a l s.

There was no questioning the com-mitment of any Rovers player in thisg ame.

What the team lack in quality theymake up for in effort and a clean sheetagainst high-flying Chesterfield wasa just reward.

The visitors looked the more likelyto break the deadlock, particularly inthe second half when Eoin Doylespurned the best chance of the gameand Steve Mildenhall’s long out-stretched left leg kept out a goal-bound shot from Gary Roberts.

C l a rke ’s shot was his side’s onlyeffort on target. Yet they were ap-plauded off that the end in a mannerthat must have given the youngermembers of the team a huge lift.

It might have been a different storyhad Doyle not unaccountably electedto try and lob the tall Mildenhallwhen breaking clear on to ArmandGnanduillet’s 48th-minute pass.

The striker got horribly under-neath the ball and sent it sailing overthe crossbar. It wasn’t Doyle's day as asecond caution for a foul on Santos inthe closing stages saw him banishedto the dressing room by referee IainWi l l i a m s o n .

Rovers must improve as an attack-ing force if they are to move clear ofthe League Two drop zone.

Ryan Brunt and Eliot Richardshave both had their injury problemsthis season and not surprisinglylooked rusty as a partnership.

Both need a run of games. The hostsfailed to fashion a clear chance, theirmidfield players often too preoccu-pied with winning the ball, ratherthan using it creatively.

But there were plenty of positivesto take into the tough trip to Oxfordnext Saturday, not least the spirit oftogetherness that still appears toexist between the fans and their en-thusiastic young guns.

Match reaction

OLLIE Clarke admitted his eyes litup at the prospect of a winning goalwhen presented with an opening inthe closing moments.

The 21-year-old midfielder, fromPortishead, who has already had toovercome three serious injuries, letfly from 20 yards, but saw his effortbeaten away by Chesterfield goal-keeper Tommy Lee.

“I looked up and thought I couldfind the top corner,” said Clarke. “Iconcentrated on hitting the targetbecause I don’t do that with enoughof my shots, but it ended up quite agood height for the goalkeeper andhe made a good save.”

Stringing four successive starts to-gether is success in itself for Clarke,

whose fledgling career has been hitby a series of setbacks.

“When I was 18 I ruptured theanterior cruciate ligament in myright knee, which takes six to ninemonths to recover from, and then Idamaged the medial meniscus in thesame knee and was out for about twom o n t h s, ” he said.

“I’ve also had a grade three ham-string tear, which is the worst youcan get, and was sidelined for aroundseven weeks with that.

“Now I have been back in trainingfor a month and everything feelsfine. I’ve always felt that if only Icould get a run of games in the side Iwould be able to prove my fitness tofight for a regular place.

“Luck plays such a big part and sofar I have had the worst sort. It’sgoing to take more than knocks orbruises to keep me out now because Ijust want to keep playing.”

Clarke felt Rovers’ perfor mancewas a step up on the previous homegame against Wycombe Wanderers, which they lost to a late goal.

“I thought we were much better onthe ball today,” he said. “It was hardwork against a good team, but Id i d n’t think Chesterfield looked a lotbetter than us.

“I played a little bit deeper thanusual. The gaffer said he wanted meto protect the back-four, get inamongst their strikers and break upthe play. I enjoy getting in the mix

and making tackles. I’ll do any job themanager asks of me, but that is thepart of the game I enjoy most.

“We worked a lot on our shape as ateam in training this week and thatpaid off. After a couple of defeats adraw feels much better and gives usextra motivation for the next game.”

Clarke is also enjoying the chanceto develop a central midfield part-nership with John-Joe O’To o l e.

“JJ is always talking to me and webounce things off one another,” hesaid. “The more experienced playersare great in that respect.

“They keep offering advice and ifyou do something well will give you apat on the back. If you misplace a passthey tell you that you are better than

that. It is difficult for a young playercoming into a side not doing as well aspeople hoped, but it’s important toremember the gaffer has faith in youand age shouldn’t really be a factor.

“The physical demands of the gameare a lot tougher than in Under-21matches. You don’t get as much timeon the ball and have to work a lotharder to get it back.”

Clarke was impressed by the con-tribution of winger Alfie Santos atthe tender age of only 18. “I thoughthe did really well against an exper-ienced full-back,” he said.

“With a bit of luck we might havegot on the end of one of his crosses. But if we keep defending like that thegoals will come.”

IT shows where we are at themoment when our manager waspleased with a 0-0 draw from ahome game.Yes, Chesterfield areone of the promotion-chasingsides, but it was a good time toplay them as they had not wonfor seven games, although I waspleased with the determinationwe showed after the Accringtond e b a cl e.

John Ward had warned theside not to be southern softies ona dark, wet and windy Tuesdaynight in Lancashire, but I’mafraid that is just what we were.Looking around the Accringtonground I thought: “What areBristol Rovers doing here?” Itseemed more like a non-leagueground as we sat in the back rowof the stand, just three rows fromthe front.

I suspect some of our ladsthought they just had to turn upto win. But they sadly underestimated how the bot-tom-of-the-table side was pre-pared for a battle, we were not.

Having gifted us an early goalwe thought the side without awin all season would just foldand was there for the taking. Butwe just sat back and invitedthem on to us. It was a disastroustactic and we could have con-ceded more than two beforehalf-time. The inexperience ofour youngsters showed up badly. They work hard and are reas-onably okay on the ball, but onthe night there were not ballwinners and there were notackles going in.

As the home side pressed for-ward in waves it needed peopleto “put their foot in” just tobreak up play even if it meanttaking a booking, but it justw a s n’t happening.

We improved in the last 20minutes when we switched totwo wingers, but it was too little, too late and a very disappointingre s u l t .

At least against Chesterfieldthose same players showed moredetermination in an entertain-ing second half and could not befaulted for their effort.

But the same shortcomingswere still there for all to see. Theworry is where are the goalscoming from as Ryan Bruntworks had but struggles to holdthe ball up. Even on the occa-sions he did win the ball fromthe usual poor service, he wasmore often than not isolated upfront on his own. That is notgood enough when visiting sidespack their defences.

We need to be more positive inhome games with more peoplepushing forward. On Saturday, particularly in the first half,Eliot Richards and Alefe Santoswere playing too deep. It was thesame old story, just the nameswere different.

At least we did have a go in thelast 20 minutes with Santosshowing great promise down theright.

BRISTOL lost one GKIPAChampionship point lastweek – over what the RugbyFootball Union deemed abreach of regulations in

their recent win over Bedford – bu tthey gained one back within 33minutes against Nottingham.

Flying out of the blocks – onceagain – Bristol’s first-half perform-ance had everything that is goodabout the way Andy Robinson andSean Holley want them to play: pace, speed of thought, invention, move-ment and finishing.

But the way director of rugbyRobinson spoke after the match, hisenduring memory of this – Bristol’sfourth straight bonus-point victoryin the Championship – is more likelyto be of a flat, untidy anderror-riddled second-half displaythan the free-scoring fireworks of theopening 40 minutes.

Both the good and the bad areimportant to understand if Bristolare to win promotion back to theAviva Premiership next June – andboth were on display at the MemorialStadium.

Bristol have improved dramatic-ally since suffering their only defeatof the season against Cornish Pirateson the opening day – but the stand-ards now in place are such that muchmore is still expected.

“It’s something we’ve got to look at,and something we’ve got to address, because it’s right for us to look atourselves when we’ve got a good sco-reline and we’ve got the five points,”said Robinson.

“We ’ve improved since what we didagainst Cornish Pirates, but at timesin that second half, Nottingham madeit difficult for us to play. They stoppedthe momentum of the game, they putbodies around the ball, and wewe re n’t accurate enough.

“T hat’s what teams are going to doagainst us – and we’ve got to be able todeal with it. If that happens in thefirst half, that’s maybe becauseyo u ’re just getting used to the game. But if it happens in the second half,t h at ’s where it becomes slightly dis-ap p o i n t i n g . ”

On the plus side, there was yes-

t e rd ay ’s first half. Bristol have madeit clear they want to blow teams awayin the opening stages – and they againbacked up their words with a barn-storming start.

The bonus point was safely bankedwithin 33 minutes, with Nottinghampushed onto the back foot as RukiTipuna again inspired Bristol with adisplay of energy and innovation.Bristol’s high-tempo game-plan suitsthe scrum-half down to the ground –and he pulled the strings in brokenp l ay.

An early Matthew Jarvis penaltyproved little more than an incon-venience, as, when the visitorsknocked on from the restart, GeorgeWatkins scored the first of his twotries. He went over after Tipuna andMarco Mama had combined from thescr um.

Watkins, who is now behind onlySean Marsden and David Lemi whenit comes to league tries for Bristol, added a second a few minutes later –and this time it owed everything tohis own anticipation and reading ofthe game.

The winger was in a perfect po-sition to snaffle a pass from Jarvis, intended for one of the Nottinghamfly-half ’s outside backs, but still hadto race in from 45 metres to completethe score. Fewer than 60 seconds later,he was almost in for a second – poun-cing to make another interception –but play was brought back for anearlier Bristol knock-on.

Even though Tom Calladine hitback for Nottingham, going overwhen the visitors caught Bristol nap-

ping with a short line-out, Bristol’sresponse was urgent and devastating. From a close-range scrum, after Bris-tol had kicked a penalty to touch andthen earned a second penalty, centreBen Mosses went jinking to the line,to open up an eight-point lead for hiss i d e.

That became 15 points when thequick-thinking of Tipuna and pace ofWatkins led to Tristan Roberts divingover to seal the bonus point.

Nottingham lost prop CampeseMa’afu to the sin-bin – and then, shortly after half-time, shipped a fifthtry when Roberts struck again. ButMartin Haag’s side, despite lackingthe overall quality they had last sea-son, showed they are not bereft offight and character as they came backinto the game.

The result was never in doubt onceRoberts had crossed for thebonus-point-clincher – but the stampof complete control Bristol had beenthreatening to put on the game didnot materialise either.

Nottingham gnawed away at theBristol line for five minutes, winninga series of penalties and line-outs,before replacement Alex Shaw – withhis first touch – burrowed over.

Even at that stage, there remained16 minutes plus stoppage time – bu tthe closing stages were unusuallyuneventful, leaving Robinson frus-trated, albeit in a much different wayto how he had been against Piratesback in early September.

That alone is a mark of Bristol’sprogress since – even if much moreremains expected of them.

Key incidents

BRISTOL wrapped up a try-scoringbonus point inside 33 minutes at theMemorial Stadium – and theirbiggest frustration was that theyonly added one more try after that.

The home side were rampant inthe opening stages, with GeorgeWatkins crossing twice, Ben Mossesgoing over and Tristan Roberts alsoscoring as they effectively sealedtheir fourth straight bonus-pointwin in the GKIPA Championshipbefore half-time.

The early exchanges were fierce, with James Merriman recoveringfrom a heavy hit in the first minuteto play a key role in the match.

It was the backs, however, whoscored the tries for Bristol. MatthewJarvis kicked Nottingham into a

fifth-minute lead, but Bristol repliedwhen, from the restart, the visitorsknocked on in their own 22. From thescrum, Ruki Tipuna and MarcoMama combined to send wingerWatkins to the line.

Nottingham had several chancesin the opening stages – but were letdown by some poor handling. Bristolsoon punished their visitors’ waste-fulness when Watkins intercepted apass from Jarvis and raced in from45 metres to score, giving the op-position fly-half no chance of catch-ing him.

Roberts converted to give Bristol a14-3 lead – which became 14-6 on 23minutes when Jarvis knocked over asecond successful penalty of them at ch .

Nottingham then pegged Bristolback even further when they caughtthem out via a short line-out. HookerJon Vickers hit Neilus Keogh at thefront of the line-out – and he darteddown the left wing before findingTom Calladine, who scored.

Bristol hit back twice beforehalf-time, though. A deliberateknock-on set up a spell of dominancefor Bristol, which ended with centreMosses jinking his way to the lineafter smart work from Tipuna at thebase of a five-metre scrum.

MANGOTSFIELD recorded a thirdsuccessive away win as they endedB r i d g w at e r ’s unbeaten league recordwith an impressive showing at Fair-fax Park.

Mangotsfield took a second-minutelead when Tom Parrinello swung in afree-kick to the back post, where MattSysum guided a header back across

FOR 67 minutes, Brislington’s play-ers dared to dream of reaching the FACup first round for the first time inthe club’s history.

But then a miscued punch fromotherwise immaculate goalkeeperChris Humphries was nodded intothe net from a few yards out byWe l l i n g ’s Lee Clarke and the dreamsbegan to fade.

Nevertheless, Jeff Meacham’s sidecontinued to defy the four-divisiongap in status between the sides andcame close to putting their name inthe hat for the first rounddraw when right-back TomGodsell swivelled in thepenalty area and caughthis 82nd-minute, left-footvolley sweetly, but unfortu-nately for Brislington, it wentstraight into the arms of goal-keeper Luke Butcher.

Few would argue thatWelling deserved their win,but only just. Brislington’sdefensive discipline andhard graft was such that aside standing ninth in the ConferencePremier were restricted to a handfulof chances.

Much of the credit for that must goto an excellent back-four, with skipperJason Hughes a commanding pres-ence at centre-back. Mike Rimmershowed good composure on the ball inthe a deep-lying central midfield role, while substitute Omari Simms im-pressed out wide after replacing ham-string-victim Alex Lambert.

In the end, Brislington couldn’tpull off another upset, to go alongsidethe wins over Truro and Wes-ton-super-Mare in the previousrounds, but Meacham was under-

standably proud of his side’s per-for mance.

“I was very pleased and proudabout the way the lads went about it,”said the former Bristol Roversstriker. “To play a team that are fourleagues above us and to give them areal scare, and the way we went aboutit, was very good.

“We were a little unfortunate withthe goal, but we could have pinchedone at the end. Tom Godsall caughthis volley a little too well, if anything.I also thought the free-kick that led totheir goal was a little harsh. Theball’s been blasted at our player andit’s hit his hand, but he didn’t stickhis hand out.”

B r i s l i n g t o n’s fans in a club-recordattendance of 700-strong played theirpart in creating a good atmosphere atIronmould Lane, although the throw-ing of four flares on to the pitch in thesecond half took enthusiasm for theoccasion a tad too far.

Welling had lots of corners in thefirst half, but all of them were

well defended by the hosts. The nearest the visitors

came to scoring in the first45 minutes was when

centre-half Blaine Hudson fireda shot just over the crossbar, while on a couple of other oc-

casions, Brislington were in-debted to goal-saving tacklesfrom Danny Barwood andHughes. At the other end,B r i s l i n g t o n’s only clear open-

ing fell to Frank Gingell,whose shot was blocked by a de-f e n d e r.

Humphries saved well from JakeGalla gher’s low shot early in thesecond half, and Brislington did theirbest to try to summon up an equaliserafter the visitors had taken the lead.

Simms had a shot comfortablysaved, then Gingell fired wide from 25yards and Godsall saw his volleysaved. Brislington had enjoyed stop-page-time winners in the previous tworounds, but there was no fairytaleending this time. Josh Dyer’s 20-yarddrive, which went a few yards wide, was as close as they came.

McNab does the trick for Town

ROSS McNab hit a hat-trick as Cleve-don Town gained a stunning win atBishop’s Cleeve to move up to 19th inthe Calor League Division One South& West table.

C l eve d o n’s first real chance cameon the half-hour when an OllieBarnes free-kick from 25 yards outwas parried by Louie Barnfather inthe home goal and cleared away.

Three minutes later, Clevedon tookthe lead when good play between JoeFlurry and Adie Adam down the leftflank got the ball to Ollie Barnes, whose cross was finished off byM a c N ab.

Clevedon went two up shortly be-fore half-time when MacNab nodded

a free-kick back to Matt Thorne, whose shot from just inside the pen-alty area found the net.

On 47 minutes, Andy Venningbrought a good save out of Clevedon’sDanny Greaves.

However, on 66 minutes, the homeside were reduced to ten men whenAlex Hoyle was sent off after bringingdown McNab in the penalty area.Thorne fired home the spot-kick tomake it 3-0.

Four minutes later, Louis Feelymade a good run down the left wingand his cross was finished off byM a c N ab.

Ibz Diallo, Issac Reid and Thorneall went close to scoring for Clevedon, before another goal arrived in 89thm i nu t e.

Thorne chipped the ball over thedefence for McNab to run on to, andhe touched it past the goalkeeperbefore tapping it into the net.

goal and into the bottom right cornerof the net.

After Ben Hunt went close to scor-ing for Mangotsfield on a couple ofoccasions, the visitors extended theiradvantage in the 41st minute.

The ball was worked wide to RyanBath on the right flank and his crosswas headed low into the net byHunt.

Bridgwater nearly pulled a goalback just before half-time, but KevinSawyer did well to tip a free-kick fromAaron Robbins over the crossbar.

Bridgwater had an opportunity to

reduce the arrears six minutes intothe second half when Mitchell Pagelatched on to a high ball over theMangotsfield defence, but he liftedhis shot wide of the left-hand up-right.

Kyle Tooze fired a shot over thecrossbar for Mangotsfield, but vic-tory was secured with a third goal on83 minutes.

Hunt poked the ball home fromeight yards, via the aid of a deflection, after a mix up between home goal-keeper Chris Wright and right-backKristian Miller.

Ba t h ’s hopes ofa good cup runended by Lewis

A THUMPING Theo Lewis headertwo minutes before half-time wasenough for Salisbury City to endB at h ’s hopes of progressing to thefirst round of the FA Cup.

The hosts perhaps paid the pricefor giving too much respect to theConference Premier side, with thestarting XI looking set up to play acontaining game rather than take thetie to their visitors.

Salisbury forward Dan Fitchetthad a sight of goal in the thirdminute, but the striker’s angled driveflew past the near post.

The first goal almost arrived justbefore the half-hour mark whenFitchett managed to get to the bylineand chip the ball back towards mid-fielder Clovis Kamdjo, who rattled aheader against the bar from sixya rd s.

There was a lucky escape for homegoalkeeper Jason Mellor a couple ofminutes later when he started to gofor an Elliott Frear corner, but thenchanged his mind and was relieved tosee the ball fly across the box withoutanyone getting a touch.

But Mellor was beaten a couple ofminutes before half-time when Lewispowered a close-range header into thenet from Frear’s looping cross.

It was a blow to the hosts, whoneeded a bright start to the secondhalf. Andy Watkins almost providedit following a quick break by SekaniSimpson, but the striker’s well-hitshot was straight at former Bath goal-keeper Will Puddy.

Watkins was replaced by ElliottChamberlain in the 56th minute andRoss Stearn was introduced for ChrisAllen just after the hour.

The visitors had a chance to doubletheir lead when Lewis had a shotblocked by Dan Ball, but cleverlyback-heeled the rebound to ChrisMcPhee, who showed rather less com-posure as he blazed his angled driveover the bar.

B at h ’s final change was to send onyoungster Dan Bowman for Simpsonwith ten minutes to go.

However, the hosts were still strug-gling to create clear-cut chances, al-though Puddy was forced into a lowsave by Adelsbury’s strike from theedge of the penalty area.

Mangotsfield make it three away wins in a row

It’s always good to hear a funny football chant, isn’t it Graham?

Bristol Rugby 2013-14The season so far . . .

IWAS driving along the other

day listening to a sports stationon the radio, where the topic forlisteners to phone in on wasfootball supporters’ ch a n t s.The presenter of the showwanted humorous stories re-

lating to this subject, and he was sooninundated with telephone calls.

The first chap to get through re-layed his experience of a non-Leaguematch he had attended that previousSaturday. There were only a few hun-dred supporters at the game, so anychanting by the fans was easy toh e a r.

He explained that the away goal-keeper, protecting the goal directly infront of where the home mobgathered, was the object of the fans’

cutting chants. The goalkeeper was,by all accounts, a little on the tubbyside, and has probably had to endure afair amount of abuse down the years. The chant, though, that was aimed athim must have brought a smile toeven his face. It went, “T here’s onlytwo James Cordens, two James Cor-dens!”

There have been some classic funny

chants I have heard down the years, many though are not suitable to usein this column (they are too funny).

One chant which I heard whilewatching Liverpool play on the tele-vision a couple of seasons ago mademe chuckle. It went “He’s big, he’sred, his feet stick out the bed – Pe t e rC ro u ch ! ”

I was tempted to call the showmyself, and relay a comment that wasshouted to one of my team-mates by asupporter during my spell at BathC i t y.

We were defending a corner duringthis particular game, when aloud-mouthed supporter of our op-ponents shouted out “Oi, numbersix”.

I was standing near the goal-post,

and knew it wasn’t me he was yellingat, because I wore the number tenshirt (like most of the best playersdo!), so I glanced around to see whichone of our players was wearing num-ber six. It was our very experiencedformer Bristol Rovers defender Gra-ham Day.

This supporter repeated the shout afew times, adding, “Turn around, number six”. Graham, like the old prohe was, totally ignored the remarks.

However, the chap in question wasnot one to give up easily, and thewords he used next to get Graham’sattention are ones that every one ofour players will never let Grahamforg et.

At the top of his voice the frustratedsupporter bellowed, “Oi, number six,

mattress face!” None of us could keepa straight face because, believe it ornot, Graham’s face did kind of re-semble a mattress!

As you can imagine, the moment weall got on our coach for the journeyhome, we burst into song, “T here’sonly one mattress face, only one mat-tress face!”

Staying on the subject of radio, Iwas tuned into one of the local sta-tions this week, when the host of theshow announced that the pop groupOne Direction were hoping to play inBristol.

Within minutes, both City headcoach Sean O’Driscoll and Roversboss John Ward contacted the showand stated that they would definitelysettle for a point!
