GOAL-hero Jay Emmanuel-Thomasclaims playing football has become alot easier for City now that theyare winning again.

Since ending an11-match run without aLeague victory whenbeating Carlisle 4-2 atBrunton Park a fort-night ago, the Robinshave drawn 1-1 with Old-ham and defeated Craw-ley 2-0.

City made it three wins infour games by beating Dagen-ham & Redbridge and two-goalman-of-the-match Em-

manuel-Thomas described the ex-perience as “big fun.”

He said: “Now that we arewinning games, it has

brought that bit more ofa smile to everyone’sf ace.

“We played wellwithout winningearlier in the season, but now we’re getting

that buzz and feelingthat we are going to win

g ames.“That just makes playing

the game a whole lot easier. When wego one-nil up and the other team

d o n’t look like scoring, it really doesgive you a lift. When we scored thesecond goal, it took a load of pressureoff and we were able to relax.”

Handed a more or less free role,Emmanuel-Thomas, pictured, pro-duced an irresistible display andnow has 14 goals to his name thisseason.

He said: “I always want to playfootball, but some games are moreenjoyable than others. The perform-ance of the whole team made playingin this game enjoyable.

“We had a lot of the ball today andthe boys gave me really good service.Everything I tried seemed to come

off for me today.“Our attacking movement was

good and the opposition switched offfrom time to time, which madethings easier for us.

“I’m able to roam wherever I thinkI can cause the most damage and Ijust sway from left to right and get onthe ball as much as I can.

“It’s nice to have that freedom, butI have to make sure that, when I geton the ball, I make the best use ofit.”

Dagenham manager Wayne Bur-nett felt Emmanuel-Thomas was justabout unplayable.

He said: “We didn’t make any par-

ticular provision for him, because wewere not quite sure where he wouldp l ay.

“We thought they would go 4-4-1-1with him in the hole behind thestriker, but in the end he startedcoming over to our left-back (JackConnors).

“I thought our left-back didn’t dotoo badly, but he is a dangerous playerwhen he gets the ball and runs atyo u .

“He comes from deep positions, isdifficult to pick up and can hurt you ifyou allow him time and space on theball.”

Elliot Parish: Made a couple of really usefulsaves in first half, then quiet.

Brendan Moloney: Defended well and givenplenty of room in which to attack.

Aden Flint: Improved after slow start and wasa commanding figure at the back.

Derrick Williams: Read the game well andsnuffed out threat from Daggers strikers.

Greg Cunningham: Linked up well withShorey on the left and played well.

Scott Wagstaff: Linked up play and was athreat in and around the box.

Marlon Pack: An assist and kept the teamplaying on the front foot.

Bobby Reid: Never stopped trying to pass theball and make things happen.

Nicky Shorey: Another competent display, hetook the switch to midfield in his stride.

Sam Baldock: Worked tirelessly for the teamand created space for Emmanuel-Thomas.

Jay Emmanuel-Thomas: As good anindividual display as I have seen from a BristolCity player all season.

jured the most incisive move of thefirst half to present the top-scorerwith a clear sight of goal and his shottook a helpful deflection on its waypast wrong-footed keeper Chris Lew-ington.

Thereafter, City’s hegemony wasrarely threatened and, in the secondhalf, it became a matter of whenrather than if they would add to theirgoal tally.

Numerous chances were createdand spurned before substitute Mar-vin Elliott profited from MarlonPa ck ’s incisive foray into the op-position penalty area three minutesfrom time.

City’s superiority against a Da-genham side that permitted them fartoo much space was confirmed whenEmmanuel-Thomas beat Lewingtonwith his unerring left-foot in timeadded on.

Emmanuel-Thomas may be diffi-cult to play against, but he is alsodifficult to play with and his fellowstrikers tend to be overshadowed.None more so than Sam Baldock, who worked tirelessly to create roomfor his attacking side-kick.

In accordance with his role as cap-tain, the former West Ham and MKDons marksman was prepared to runthe channels and chase countless lostcauses for the benefit of the team.

Emmanuel-Thomas took quiterightly took the plaudits, but Bal-d o ck ’s contribution should not beove rl o o ke d .

He boasts a proven goal-scoringrecord at this level when deployedalongside a target man andO’Driscoll will hardly need remind-ing that a Ryan Taylor/Baldock axiscould potentially serve City just aswell as the their talismanictop-scorer. More than anything else, that single factor could seal Em-manuel-T homas’s departure in thenew year.

questioning his contribution since hesigned in the summer. When Citywere desperate to end an 11-matchsequence without a win in LeagueOne, it was Emmanuel-Thomas whoconjured a hat-trick to inspire a 4-2victory at Carlisle. His goal earned a1-1 draw with Oldham seven dayslater and he was again on thescore-sheet as City beat CrawleyTown 2-0 to register a first leaguesuccess on home soil in eightm o n t h s.

On this occasion, his two-goal salvobooked the Robins safe passage intothe second round of the FA Cup.

You could only feel sorry forLeague Two opponents who did theirutmost to conjure an upset during theopening 25 minutes without quitemanaging to get their noses in front.

Dagenham midfielder Luke Howellwas twice denied, Aden Flint clear-ing his shot off the line and keeperElliot Parish making a fine divingsave to keep out another effort mo-ments later as the visitors causedCity problems on the counter-attack.

Rhys Murphy was narrowly off tar-get with a bullet header and worriedCity fans were beginning to at leastponder the possibility of a shockwhen Emmanuel-Thomas intervenedwith telling effect to alter the courseof the game 11 minutes beforeh a l f - t i m e.

sooner rather than later.Although circumstance has con-

trived to cause him to drop down toLeague One with Bristol City, the22-year-old Londoner is confident inhis ability to one-day play in thePremier League.

It remains to be seen whether hecan scale those dizzy heights afterbeing released by the Gunners andmoved on by Championship clubIpswich Town, but one thing is forsure, Emmanuel-Thomas is too goodfor the lower leagues.

Certainly, the task of shackling hisoutrageous talent proved beyondhumble Dagenham & Redbridge, whose defenders were led a merrydance in this ultimately one-sided FACup first -round tie at Ashton Gate.

Emmanuel-Thomas scored City’sfirst and last, has 14 for the seasonand could well exceed 20 by the timethe transfer window reopens in Janu-a r y.

And therein lies the dilemma for aCity team that has become increas-ingly dependent upon the maverickforward for inspiration in difficultt i m e s.

Given his performances this sea-son, it is reasonable to assume biggerclubs will show an interest in a playerwho is finally realising his potentialunder the careful tutelage of Robins’head coach Sean O’Driscoll.

And if, and when, the offers start torole in for Emmanuel-Thomas at theturn of the year, it is difficult to seehow City will be able to do anythingother than sell him to the highestbidder. If anything, he is playing toowell, and it will be a major surprise ifChampionship clubs are not alreadymonitoring his progress with a viewto competing for his services.

While City fans will no doubt clam-our for the former Arsenal prodigy toremain in BS3, the decision will betaken out of their hands by financialnecessity. No longer big spenders, theRobins are in the business of buyingyoung players at affordable pricesand developing them to the pointwhere they can be sold for a profit.

Dagenham & Redbridge 0

JAY Emmanuel-Thomas is afootball enigma, a maverick. When the former Arsenalyoungster plays like he didagainst Dagenham and Red-bridge on Saturday, he is a dif-ferent class. Players at this levelcannot get close to him and hewas the main reason that BristolCity progressed past the firstround for the first time in sevenye a r s.

JET swaggered through thegame, roaming from left to rightsometimes walking, sometimesjogging and more often than notstanding still just waiting for theball. When on the ball, JETwould wait for his opponent tomake a move and then in a blinkof an eye, he would be past himand running on goal. I admit tobeing extremely frustrated withJET at times and the reason, isthat he makes the game look soeasy and should, therefore, havefar more of an influence ongames, especially at this level.

Against Crawley on Tuesday,JET did very little for 80 minutesand with ten minutes to go, heoutmuscled the oppositioncentre-half, powered into the boxand side-footed the team's open-er into the net. It was so easy.

Against Dagenham, JET wasalmost taunting them (in no waydisrespectfully) and it was al-most like he was saying, OKwhen do I want to turn it on.True, his first goal took a de-fection, but it was his determ-ination and strength thatafforded the opportunity. Timeand time again, JET tricked hisway into the box and had twoefforts cleared off the line andtwo or three others where he justfailed to pick the right man out.

The big man saved his bestuntil last, with only seconds re-maining the ball got played tohim on the left hand edge of thebox and he took one touch tocontrol it before riffling a shotinto the far corner of the net.

I was fortunate to watch Dari-usz 'Jacki' Dziekanowski playfor Bristol City in the early 1990sand in my 40 years of watchingmy favourite team, Jacki is myall-time favourite player, eventhough he played only just over40 games. JET could be my newf avourite.

Of course, when a player is topof the goalscoring charts, otherclubs will show an interest andwith the club's new ethos anyreasonable bid could be accep-ted. I'm not sure though that JETwould go. How many teams inthe top two divisions of the Eng-lish game would allow a playerto just roam freely around thepitch? Ipswich Town boss MickMcarthy couldn't fit JET into hisstyle of play and maybe JETshould resist all temptation inJanuary and stay where heknow's he is loved.

It has been a great week for theteam with our first home win inthe league followed up by the cupvictory and both with cleansheets. There is still a hugeamount of work to do but we aregetting there. The performanceagainst Dagenham was a pro-fessional one and we have to takethis into the league.

AS lovely a city as York maybe, words were not really re-quired to see exactly howBristol Rovers striker MattHarrold felt about having to

go there on a Tuesday night later thismonth.

Harrold did manage to utter twowords – those being “no comment” –when eventually asked about the pro-spect of a replay with York City atBootham Crescent after a thrillingFA Cup first-round tie between thetwo sides had finished 3-3 at the Me-morial Stadium on Friday night – ye tthe look on his face said it all.

Disappointment and frustrationwere etched across it, to replace theexpressions of joy that were inscribedupon it only a matter of some 45minutes or so earlier after Harroldhad come off the bench to score a goalwith his first touch following asix-week injury-enforced absence tolevel an enthralling game at 2-2.

When on-loan Preston strikerChris Beardsley converted a MichaelSmith cross off his head from

close-range to add a third goal in the75th minute, few would have hadcause to complain had that been thedefining strike to hand Rovers whatwould have been a deserved place inthe second round.

It almost did, yet there was still onelate and cruel twist for Rovers tosuffer as usually-reliable goalkeeperSteve Mildenhall appeared to exper-ience a black variety of the FA Cup’smagic when letting a hopeful LanreOyebanjo up and under squirmthrough his fingers to gift York sub-stitute Wes Fletcher a simple equal-

Once the disappointment of beingpegged back in the dying stages of agame Rovers should have won sub-sided, however, manager John Wardwill have been left with plenty ofpositives to contemplate after watch-ing his side extend a recent unbeatenrun to three games – albeit an im-pressive victory at Oxford Unitedsandwiched between two draws.

Much of the green shoots of re-covery in recent weeks have come asa result of a growing strength anddepth of options available in a squadthat has been hampered by injurysince the start of the campaign; theadditions of Beardsley and defenderWill Packwood in particular provingso far successful, whilst the return ofLee Brown on Friday night was alsot i m e ly.

It was Brown that provided theset-piece delivery from which Har-rold headed home a 59th-minuteequaliser with his first touch thatstarted Rovers’ second-half revival, yet it was the game-changing natureof the striker's all-round performancethat prompted Ward to suggest thathe is at the top of the pecking order interms of the numerous attacking op-tions currently at his disposal.

Ryan Brunt and David Clarksonalso started alongside Harrold on thebench, while Alex Henshall, the wing-er on loan from Manchester City, wasunable to find a place in thematch-day squad at all.

tention this week to offer Ward sev-eral difficult selection decisions toponder before Rovers return toleague action when they entertainBury at the Memorial Stadium onS at u rd ay.

The size of the crowd at the Me-morial Stadium on Friday night, meanwhile, suggests that there islittle magic in the FA Cup when itthrows up a tie between two LeagueTwo clubs.

Yet those who did brave the ele-ments on a damp night were rewar-ded with possibly the mostentertaining match witnessed in Hor-field this season.

The opening exchanges, however, failed to deliver the sort of action thatsuggested the game would eventuallydevelop in to such a thrilling en-counter; a rasping shot off the leftboot of Ollie Clarke from 30 yards thatricocheted off a post the highlight asthe two sides carefully went aboutsussing each other out.

The match was transformed in thespace of five minutes towards the endof the opening period when, first,Ryan Jarvis was on hand to pokehome from close-range to open thescoring after Mildenhall dropped ahigh ball inside the penalty areawhen under pressure from York cent-ral defender Chris Smith in the 35thm i nu t e

Eliot Richards, however, continuedhis return to form by scoring histhird goal of the season to equalisealmost immediately before wide-manJosh Carson ensured York a slenderhalf-time advantage by scoring a

MATT Harrold is keen to avoid thetag of ‘s u p e r- s u b ’ after scoring withhis first touch when coming offthe bench in the FA Cupfirst round clash againstYork City at the Me-morial Stadium onFriday night.

Harrold got hishead on a Lee Brownset-piece delivery tolevel the game up be-fore the two sides even-tually shared the spoilsin a 3-3 draw to set up areplay at Bootham Crescenton Tuesday, November 19.

It marked a return to action forHarrold, who also scored a

last-minute equaliser when comingoff the bench in the final game of lastseason against Torquay United, fol-

lowing six games out with agroin injury.

“I’ve scored a few comingoff the bench before, butnever one with my firstt o u ch , ” said Harrold.

“It was lovely to see theball hit the back of thenet because you want to

have an effect on a gamewhenever you come off the

bench. I understand why I wasa substitute on Friday night, but I

d o n’t want to be labelled with that‘s u p e r- s u b ’ tag because you alwayswant to be playing from the start.”

Har rold’s goal came either side ofefforts from Eliot Richards andChris Beardsley that looked set tosend Rovers into the second roundbefore York substitute Wes Fletcherplundered an equaliser four minutesfrom the end of normal time.

“It was a really good game,” Har-rold said.

“I thought we played really well inthe second half, but the way the gameended was frustrating for us.

“We had a real go and we were onthe front-foot for the majority of thegame. We were positive ineverything we done and I thought wedeserved the win, but that’s footballand that is the FA Cup.”

Goalkeeper Steve Mildenhall was

guilty of a mistake that gifted Yorktheir late leveller after letting a LanreOyebanjo up and under slip throughhis fingers to allow Fletcher a simpleoppor tunity.

But Harrold said: “I’ve played withMildy before at Southend so I knowwhat a big character he is.

“He might have had a bit of troublesleeping on Friday night, but I don’tthink it will worry him too much inthe long run because he has been oneof our best players since he came tothe club. It is similar to when I missedthe penalty at Dagenham a few weeksback. You feel guilty for all of the ladsand the manager and everything, butMildy has held his hands up andt h at ’s the end of it.”

Harrold, meanwhile, is hoping tofully shake off the groin problemsthat have hampered his availabilityin the early part of this season aftermissing the majority of the last cam-paign due to a serious knee injury.

“It felt great to be back out there,”he said.

“A couple of weeks ago I was feelingpretty low because I couldn’t see my-self coming back so quickly as mygroin felt very dodgy.

“It is a bit of tendinitis on themuscle and is something I’ll just haveto try and manage.

“It’s an overuse thing and I’ll haveto take it easy at times, but I’m hopingthat with time it will fade away.”

The Memorial Stadium is lit up for the FA Cup first-round tie against York City

WE were all stunned that suchan exciting cup tie, with somegreat goals, could end in such acalamitous way.

Following some solid perform-ances, Steve Mildenhall wasrightly pictured on the front ofF riday’s official programme.Little did we know he wouldbecome the villain of the piece.

Things had all started soquietly and the only talkingpoint in the first 15 minutes was:is the ball orange or pink?

Our line-up had a somewhatdefensive feel to it with OliverNorburn preferred instead ofDavid Clarkson to replace thesuspended John-Joe O’To o l e.However, Norburn did play hispart in a crowded penalty areaas Rovers immediately hit backafter the visitors opened thescoring.

Then it was a tale of two greatshots. Unfortunately for OllieClarke his thunderbolt cameback off the post with the City‘keeper well beaten only forMildenhall to then get beaten bya once in a lifetime thunderboltfrom Josh Carson that dippedviciously under the bar at thelast minute.

But once again the introduc-tion of Matt Harrold lifted theteam, and the crowd, and justlike at Torquay at the end of lastseason he sensationally scoredwith his first touch from af re e - k i ck .

It was classic cup-tie stuff asRovers stepped up a gear withHarrold linking up with every-one, including Chris Beardsley, who revelled in the extra spaceand service he was now gettingto slot home a smart goal.

This was what we had waited along time to see, plenty of goodattacking football at home. JohnWard got into the cup spirit as,when he substituted Norburn,we expected to see a defendercome on, but no it was RyanBrunt. So with Eliot Richardsand Alefe Santos we now hadfour forwards on, plus a winger. It was just like watching Brazil.

But as they seem to say infootball these days “we didn’tsee it coming” when Mildenhallgot both hands around a harm-less centre only to drop it at thefeet of Wes Fletcher.

It summed up a bad night forMildenhall, beaten from so farout for that second goal althoughit was unstoppable, but I wasuncomfortable with the way hekept punching the ball when notreally under a lot of pressure.Last season he was so good in theair and caught everything. Let’shope that Friday was just a blipfor him.

I have often gone on about thelong ball but on Friday weplayed a lot of good stuff throughthe middle with Richards andSantos looking sharp and thingsare generally looking a lot bet-ter. It was also a great pity therewas less than 5,000 to watch suchan entertaining game particu-larly as the club had made it aquid-a-kid for the youngsters.Still, we hope that those young-sters who watched Rovers forthe first time will persuade theirdads to take them again nextS at u rd ay.

spectacular volley from distance fiveminutes before referee Trevor Kettlecalled time on the opening period.

Ward threw caution to the wind bysending on Harrold for midfielderOliver Norburn soon after the breakand was rewarded with two quick-firegoals before Fletcher plundered thelate equaliser to ensure relieved man-ager Nigel Worthington and his Yorkside lived to fight another day.

That day comes on Tuesday,November 19 in a city famed for hav-ing a street named ‘The Shambles’.Rovers will be kicking themselvesover a missed opportunity shouldtheir involvement in the FA Cup thisseason end in one of those at BoothamC re s c e n t .

AFTER five successivebonus-point victories in theGKIPA Championship, Bris-tol emerged from their mostsignificant test of the season

so far without so much as abonus-point defeat.

Not that they were beaten by a lackof ambition. Although Bristol did notscore a point in the final hour of thegame, they were the ones who en-joyed the bulk of the possession, ter-ritory and opportunities.

They again turned down kicks atgoal – as has been their preferencethis season – opting instead to go totouch whenever the opportunitypresented itself. Bristol scored onetry through this route – but for therest of the game they either madebasic errors in attack or werethwarted by a red wall.

Had this been June 4 and the Cham-pionship play-off final, rather thanNovember 10 and a bog-standardleague game in the 23-match slog thatis the regular season, it is difficult toimagine that Bristol would have beenas willing to neglect the three-point-ers on offer.

That they did – turning down apotential 18 points in penalties inorder to go for the corners – is, ac-cording to director of rugby AndyRobinson, part of their developmentas an attacking force.

“We ’re trying to improve the waywe ’re playing the game – and it’sabout being able to take those op-por tunities,” he said. “We scored atry and missed two others, and that’sthe disappointing thing. The de-cisions were right – we ’ve got toimprove the accuracy of what we’redoing.

“We had a lot of possession – andthe disappointing part of the pos-session and territory we had was thatwe weren’t able to take the oppor-tunities we wanted to take. That’ssomething we’ve got to learn.

“But we want to put ourselvesunder that pressure and we’re learn-ing a lot about ourselves by playingthis way – it’s important we make theimprovements we want to make.”

pointers regarding the remainder ofthe season, particularly with sevenmonths still to go.

Bristol arguably could have beatenWelsh had they regularly gone forgoal; had their set-piece functionedmore efficiently; or had their accur-acy across the field been sharper. Butthe fact they did not will undoubtedlygive Justin Burnell’s men the beliefthey have Bristol’s number – even atthis early stage of the season.

For their part, Welsh were resolutein defence – soaking up whateverBristol threw at them, even if thevisitors were at times their ownworst enemies – and sharp as a coun-terattacking force. Two of their threetries came from Bristol being in pos-session, but, while Welsh were anaccomplished force in most facets, they are clearly not of the same qual-ity as Newcastle, Harlequins,Northampton or some of the otherrelegated Aviva Premiership teams ofrecent seasons.

Welsh opened the scoring by win-ning a scrum against the head on theBristol five-metre line – a scrum Bris-tol had been given after Welsh hadknocked on while stealing a Bristolline-out. Daniel Browne picked upfrom the base and set up Alex Daviesto score from close range.

Minutes later, Bristol almost con-ceded a second try when they werecarved open by Seb Stegmann, whoshould have gone wide but opted in-stead to cut back in, and Nick Scotteventually knocked on.

They drew level when Nicky Robin-son sent a penalty to touch and RossJohnston was driven over, but fellbehind when Ruki Tipuna’s pass wasintercepted. The scrum-half workedback to make a tackle – but Welsh hitBristol quickly, with Carl Kirwan andDavies playing in Stegmann to score.

Welsh kept Bristol out again ashalf-time approached – as they did forthe ten minutes while Sonny Parkerwas in the sin-bin following a suc-cession of Welsh indiscretions at ther uck.

Bristol kicked another penalty totouch and drove – but were penalisedas they prepared to strike – b e fo reGeorge Watkins and Adam D’A rcyhad to be alert to deny Rob Lewis onthe counter.

Davies knocked over a penaltywhen Bristol infringed at a scrum togive Welsh a ten-point lead, beforeJames Grindal chased Watkins’ ch i pthrough, and, despite getting to theball, was deemed to have knocked onover the line. With Bristol pressingfor a losing bonus point, Welsh brokeclear and Tom May set up Ollie Sted-man to seal the victory.

“Credit to Welsh for the way theydefended and also the way they putpressure on us in the tackle contest –and they took their chances well,”said Robinson. “For us, we want toexpand the way we’re trying to play.I’m pleased with the attitude that’sbeen shown by the players, but we’vegot to improve our accuracy and ourability to take the chances.”

Minutes later, Bristol almost con-ceded a second try when they werecarved open by Seb Stegmann, whoshould have gone wide but opted in-stead to cut back in, and Nick Scotteventually knocked on.

penetration as they worked the ballfrom right to left and back again.

Key incidents

BRISTOL failed to collect at least onepoint in a Championship match forthe first time this season, as theywere outscored by three tries to oneat promotion rivals London Welsh.

Bristol did not score a point in thesecond half as Welsh made the mostof their visitors’ failure to capitaliseon the vast amounts of possessionthey enjoyed.

Welsh made a flying start – going7-0 up inside seven minutes and thencoughing up an excellent opportunityto double their advantage twominutes later. The home side – al -though that is a relative term giventheir ground is 55 miles from theiractual home – went ahead when theywon a scrum against the head onBristol’s five-metre line. Bristol weregiven the scrum after Welsh had

knocked on while stealing a line-out –and, after they had also nicked thescrum ball, Daniel Browne set upAlex Davies to score under the posts.

Davies converted his own try for a7-0 lead – and, shortly after the re-start, Welsh opened up Bristol again, but Seb Stegmann delayed the passwide, opting instead to pass inside toGordon Ross, and Nick Scott even-tually knocked on.

Bristol drew level on 20 minutes.Welsh made a hash of their ownscrum, then were penalised as theytried to rectify the situation, andNicky Robinson kicked to touch.Bristol drove the close-rangeline-out, with Ross Johnston goingover and Robinson converting.

Welsh led 14-7 at half-time, though, after Stegmann grabbed their second

try of the game. Ruki Tipuna’s passwas intercepted by Ross – and, al-though Tipuna got back and madethe tackle, Carl Kirwan arrived torelease Davies, who, in turn, set upStegmann. Davies converted to seeWelsh into a half-time advantage.

Bristol, who opted against kickingfor goal whenever they were awar-ded a penalty, were given a numer-ical advantage when Welsh centreSonny Parker saw yellow for histeam’s persistent infringement.

But they could not take advantage,Welsh surviving their ten minuteswith 14 men, before closing out vic-tory in the final stages. Davieskicked a penalty to make it 17-7 whenBristol were penalised at a scrum, before replacement Ollie Stedmanwent over in the dying seconds.

HONOURS finished even betweentwo sides who on this showing lookcapable of having a say in theend-of-season shake-up.

The visitors shaded the first half, with Yate defender Joe Chandler get-ting back to clear an Ed Palmer effortoff the line and Max Kowal beingdenied by a good save from MartinHorsell.

Yate started the second halfbrightly and they were rewardedwith a 55th-minute goal, Jake Jack-son netting from the penalty spot

after he had been held back by Tiver-ton goalkeeper Lloyd Irish.

After going close with a free-kick,Sam Malsom got the Tiverton equal-iser as he beat Horsell with a lowdrive into the corner of the net.

Yate, with Chandler and Mitch Har-rison immaculate in the centre ofdefence, then had the better of thechances as both sides looked for thew i n n e r.

Jordan Rogers had a goalboundeffort blocked and Ross Staley hit theTiverton crossbar with a swirlingcorner kick.

Defensive enforcer Joe Chandlersecured the man-of-the-match awardfor Yate, who now sit tenth in theDivision One South & West table, on21 points.

LEVEL on points before kick-off,Micky Bell’s Clevedon were hit for sixby the Railwaymen, after taking anearly lead.

It all looked good for Clevedonwhen, with barely two minutesplayed, they went ahead after IbzDiallo set up Reeko Best to score.

That was about as good as it got, though, for Clevedon.

Didcot levelled the scores fourminutes later when Kameron Ab-bassi’s shot took a wicked deflectionoff Sam Teale to wrong-foot on-loangoalkeeper Joe Woollacott.

On 15 minutes, the hosts were infront. A well-flighted corner on the

Four minutes into the second peri-od, Clevedon fell further behind. Aslip by Diallo saw Whitehead collectthe ball and he fed John Mills, whoslipped the ball under the advancingWo o l l a c o t t .

A foul on Abbassi three minuteslater by Adams gave Pablo Hayshamthe chance to extend the home side’slead from the penalty spot, and hemade no mistake.

And it was Haysham who grabbed afifth for Didcot on 78 minutes. MattThorne pulled a goal back fiveminutes from time, converting a pen-alty after Best had been broughtdown, but Clevedon’s misery wascompleted straight from the kick-off,when Whitehead scored a sixth goalfor the home side.

Clean sheet was the most crucial thing, says Bath’s two-goal hero Bell“I think the clean sheet is the most

important thing to come out of today,”said Ball after City’s third successiveleague victory.

“I think that’s the first one in theleague. If you don’t concede, you don’tlose, so we have to keep more.

“We went through a run where wewere playing OK but not winning, then a spell of not doing well in thefirst half but better in the second.

“Now we are putting performancestogether for the whole 90 minutes. Ithink we’ve worked each other out (asplayers), we know what we’re goodat . ”

The win was marred by a58th-minute red card for winger RossStearn, with last week’s hat-trickhero sent off for his reaction to abody-check from home centre-halfAshley Vickers.

The visitors took the lead after justthree minutes when Dave Pratt’scross was emphatically headed pastkeeper Alan Walker-Harris by theonrushing Ball.

It was a dream start for City and anightmare for Dorchester, who arebottom of the Skrill South table afterlosing most of the players who helpedthem to a best-ever league finish last

But it was one of those youngstersthrust into the team who was at faultfor the second goal, with Tony Rollsbeing outjumped at the back post asBall nodded in his second from Ste-ar n’s free-kick.

Dorchester, to their credit, tried toget back into the game and BrandonGoodship had a shot well saved byJason Mellor at his near post, whileJake Smeeton headed narrowly wide

Neil Martin put a back-passstraight out for a corner, which wasonly cleared as far as Dan Bowman. His chipped cross was deflected to-wards his own goal by Steve Walker, forcing an excellent reaction save byWalker-Har ris.

Didcot levelled the scores fourminutes later when Kameron Ab-bassi’s shot took a wicked deflectionoff Sam Teale to wrong-foot on-loangoalkeeper Joe Woollacott.

A BATTLING performance byDings Crusaders saw themcome within a lick of paint oftoppling SSE NationalLeague Two South leaders

Hartpury College at Landseer Av-e nu e.

The visitors, leading 25-23 as thecontest drifted into overtime, wereawarded a penalty. But ill-disciplineby visiting wing Jakie Carter saw thepenalty reversed by referee JamesSullivan, and Dings were handed onelast chance to steal the victory.

But the Lockleaze faithful couldonly watch as fly-half Mitch Burton’slong-range shot dropped agonisinglyshort. Former Gloucester centreTerry Fanolua fielded the ball underhis posts and hoofed it into touch, to

signal the end of the contest.Crusaders, after a shaky start in

which they conceded six points viathe boot of full-back GarethThompson, responded magnificently.Dings’ tactics were simple during anentertaining and committedfirst-half – play in the right areas, putpressure on the title favourites, andwait for them to crack.

And crack they did, and the homeside deservedly went into the intervalleading 13-6, with Burton landing twopenalties as well as adding the extrasafter prop Josh Lloyd crashed overfor his first of two tries.

Burton banged over another pen-alty after the break to extend Dings’lead. Hartpury lost back-rowersLewis Ludlow and Alex Woodburn tothe sin-bin either side of half time, but 60-seconds of madness by Dingsturned the game on its head, as firstwing Ollie Reyland, then hooker DaveWheeler were yellow carded within aminute of each other, and Hartpurytook full advantage.

The Gloucester-based side uppedthe tempo, and ran 13-man Dings

ragged with converted tries byflanker Andrew Chester, lock Wil-liam Waldron, and a five-pointer byscrum-half Ben Vellacutt, beforeDings could draw breath.

But this season, Dings are made ofsterner stuff, and strong perform-ances by flanker Sam Steer, propMike Flook, wing James Oakley andlock Jake Holcombe, saw them forcetheir way back into the match.

Lloyd rumbled over from a catchand drive to score his second con-verted try of the afternoon on 75minutes, and it was the would-bechampions who were hanging on atthe end of the contest.

But despite Dings’ brave effort, they drop into the SSE NationalLeague Two South relegation places.

Injured-player coach Mark Woo-drow reflected on his side’s narrowdefeat, and rued Crusaders doubleyellow card, which he believes costhis side the game.Scorers: Dings tries: Lloyd 39, 75. CLIFTON dropped down fromfifth to seventh in SSE NationalLeague Two South, after comingunstuck against a powerfulTaunton forward pack at HydePa rk .

Time and time again, the Bris-tol side were sent reeling back-wards at the scrum, while theTitans driving line-out gave thevisitors plenty of cause for con-cer n.

Once again, the Hen-bury-based outfit looked danger-ous in the wider channels, butthe heavy underfoot conditionshampered their progress, andClifton were reluctantly drawninto a forward battle.

To be fair, they lost a coupleto the sin-bin, and we scoredpoints when they were down. But to lose two players within aminute of each other againstthe top side in the division wasa bridge too far for usTheyreally accelerated the gameduring that ten minute period, and scored three tries. Thatwas another game that gotaway from us today, and weonly have ourselves to blame. We ’ve got to learn to closegames out.

B ox i n g Haskins has to dig deep to retainhis bantamweight title against Booth

BR I S T O L’S Lee Haskinsspoke of his immense re-spect for ring veteran JasonBooth after successfully de-fending his British bantam-

weight title against the 36-year-oldchallenger at the City Academy in StGeorg e.

More than six years his junior andat the peak of his powers, Haskinsnevertheless had to weather a stormbefore overcoming the Nottinghamman 118-111, 117-112, 119-111 in frontof his home-town fans.

Supping in the last chance saloonafter losing five of his previous sixbouts, Booth proved anything butwashed up as he pushed the cham-pion all the way in a 12-round contestthat provided rich entertainment forBristol fight fans and a Eurosport TVaudience of thousands.

“Before the fight, I wasn’t surewhich Jason Booth would turn up –the real thing or one that was over thehill,” revealed Haskins.

“He told me he had prepared reallywell for this fight, because he knewhow hard I punched and how hard Iwas to hit. I told him I had alsotrained hard for him.

“I usually try and wind my op-ponents up and get underneath theirskin, but there was none of that thistime. I have so much respect for him, simply because of how long he hasbeen in the sport and what he hasa ch i eve d .

“I usually like to give it to them, buthe’s a nice guy and I played fair byhim.”

Installed as mandatory challengerfor the European bantamweight title,Haskins has EBU champion KarimGuerfi in his sights and that fightcould be made during the early partof 2014.

A high-octane performance full ofheart and skill will certainly do theB r i s t o l i a n’s hopes of landing a bigtitle shot on the international stageno harm at all.

He reflected: “It was a fantasticfight for the TV cameras. There was alot of energy and a lot of skill in thatfight, a lot of speed and a lot of power.

There was also guts and determin-ation and heart. It was a great fightfor the crowd and for those watchingat home.

“I want to have bigger fights andbigger paydays and, hopefully, thiswill help. I would like to think we gavepeople real entertainment.”

Roared on to his 28th career win bya partisan crowd, Haskins hopes tobox for a major title in Bristol nextye a r.

He said: “That atmosphere was

HUGHIE Fury had only limited op-portunity to show Bristol fight fanswhat he is all about when racing to aninside-the distance victory over hope-lessly-outclassed Georgian DavidGegeshidze on the Bristol SportsAcademy undercard.

Acting as chief support to localhero Lee Haskins on Chris Sanigar’spromotion, unbeaten heavyweightprospect Fury extended his winningrecord by halting the game but

over-matched Gegeshidze shortly be-fore the halfway stage of a contestscheduled for eight rounds.

Victorious in 12 paid outings sinceturning professional in March, Fury, pictured, won in a manner that sug-gests he urgently needs to step up inclass. But his latest victory was notwithout incident and he sustained acut to the side of his left eye in thethird round.

Looking to get rounds under hisbelt and learn his ring craft, the 6ft6in Mancunian took his time sizingup his opponent.

But the writing was on the wall forGegeshidze once the 19-year-old, whowas watched from ringside by morefamous cousin, Tyson Fury, began toscore with heavy shots to the body.

As the Georgian dropped his hands,so Fury went to work upstairs and, when a series of heavy-handed blowswent unanswered, the refereestepped in after two minutes and 14seconds of the fourth round.

There was disappointment for Bris-tol-based debutants Dane Kelly andKristian Nadolski, both of whomtasted defeat in front of their home

crowd. Kelly was narrowly outpoin-ted 39-38 by heavy-handed journey-man Mitch Mitchell, who just aboutdeserved his success after making thelong journey from Lincoln.

But fellow light heavyweight rook-ie Nadolski will have to return to thedrawing board after being put downby a three-punch salvo from New-castle’s Scott Westgarth after twominutes and nine seconds of thesecond session in a scheduledfour-round contest. He failed to re-cover and the fight was quite rightlywaved off.

wicked and makes me want to fighthere all the time. If they offered me aworld title fight in Mexico or thechance to defend my British belt inBristol, I’d probably take fighting ath o m e.

“I love fighting in front of the Bris-tol fans, because they make me feel asthough I can’t be beaten. I think wecan do very well here in Bristol.”

Quicker to the punch and sharperall round, Haskins established hisauthority in the early rounds, build-

ing a commanding lead after fivero u n d s.

Difficult to hit, the championworked effectively off his jab, pun-ishing his 36-year-old opponent withtelling shots to head and bodywhenever he missed.

With no answer to the Bristolian’scrisp counter-punching, Booth hadno choice but to take punishment ashe stepped inside in a bid to disruptthe local hero’s rhythm. And the tac-tic paid handsome dividends in the

sixth round, the 36-year-old Mid-lander launching a fierce two-handedassault to enjoy his first real suc-c e s s.

Drawn into a fight, Haskins wasshipping too many head shots and hewas relieved when the bell sounded atthe end of the session.

Supremely fit, Booth cut the ringdown in an attempt to pressurise hisrival in the seventh, eighth and ninthro u n d s.

But Haskins weathered the stormand increased his work-rate to re-es-tablish his authority during the finalquarter of a thrilling contest.

Adopting a hit and move policyduring the closing rounds, Haskinsused his superior footwork and handspeed to pick off the challenger as hepressed for the stoppage that rep-resented his last chance to triumph.

Haskins boxed smart down thehome straight and came on strong inthe 12th and final round to almostforce a stoppage himself.

Stopped only twice during his longcareer and bleeding heavily from acut over his right eye, Booth demon-strated raw courage and remarkablestamina to remain on his feet untilthe final bell.

Haskins said: “I caught him withsome great shots in the last round andnearly finished him.

“But the most important thing wasto stay out of trouble and not doanything stupid.

“He was still dangerous and I knewI just had to keep out of his way in thatlast round to win the fight.

“In the end, it was a decisive win,but it took a lot of hard work. Ithought he would tire, but he justkept coming at me.

“I thought I could stop him, butJason fought a strong fight and didwe l l .

“It felt as though he was gettingyounger and in his prime and I wasthe old man who had to keep running!Fair play to Jason, he came at mewith everything and I had to fall backon my skill a little bit and workbehind my jab.

“But I got drawn into a fight and mycorner were screaming at me to boxhim and use the skills that pay theb i l l s.

“I had to get back to moving andcountering him after the middlerounds and it won me the fight.”

MANCHESTER Unitedstriker Wayne Rooneypraised his side’s per-formance after they re-corded a 1-0 victory over

Barclays Premier League leadersArsenal at Old Trafford.

Ro o n e y ’s corner set up former Gun-ners striker Robin van Persie, whosefirst-half header proved to be thewinner against an Arsenal side whosuffered their third defeat from theirlast six matches.

Man-of-the-match Rooney said:“We knew we’d have to win today atall costs. I think we defended reallywell and thankfully Robin got thethree points and we got the threepoints, and I think it was a greateffort from everyone.”

Chelsea’s home draw on Saturdaywas followed within 24 hours byshock defeats for Tottenham andManchester City, meaning Unitedhave now closed to within five pointsof leaders Arsenal, who suffered theirfirst league defeat since the openingday of the season.

Rooney added: “We knew wec o u l d n’t afford to lose today and wec o u l d n’t let Arsenal get 11 pointsahead of us, and I think the otherresults today and yesterday...we knewa victory would put us right back inthere and we’re in a good position.

“We worked on free-kicks andcorners as Arsenal have a lot of smal-ler players in the team and that couldgive us the opportunity to get a goal, and thankfully it’s paid off.”

David Moyes’ Red Devils have wonfive of the last six games and remain

unbeaten in their last nine matchesin all competitions.

Rooney said: “It gives us a massivelift. It’s a great weekend for us goinginto the international games and wecan all go off and play for our countryand then come back, and we’ve got abig push then until the New Year andit’s our aim to still be up there.”

MANUEL Pellegrini haswarned that ManchesterCity’s bout of travel sick-ness could derail theirBarclays Premier League

title challenge.City lost 1-0 at Sunderland for the

fourth successive season on Sundayafternoon and have now taken onlyfour points from a possible 18 on theroad during the current campaign.

Pellegrini was at a loss to explainexactly how his team had come awayfrom the Stadium of Lightempty-handed after dominating forlong periods, but admitted theirhopes of glory could be dashed unlessthey can arrest the trend.

He said: “I am concerned becausewe are losing too many points awayand, of course, that’s very difficult ifyou don’t win away to try to fight forthe Premier League.

“But I don’t think we are playingbadly, so we must have a reaction, wemust improve to make sure we aregoing to win.”

Former Manchester Unitedfull-back Phil Bardsley’s 21st-minutestrike – his second goal in five days –proved enough to claim three price-less points for the Black Cats after heshrugged off James Milner andcurled a shot across keeper CostelPantilimon and inside the far post.

The Romanian was once again pre-ferred to England international JoeHart and Pellegrini refused to bedrawn on where he currently rankshis goalkeepers.

He said: “At the moment, of course,Pantilimon is playing. He hasn’t hadany problems in the three games hehas played.”

Pellegrini introduced Jesus Navasas a half-time substitute and lateradded Edin Dzeko to the mix as he

sought a way back into the game. But with Sunderland keeper Vito

Mannone and a defence marshalledsuperbly by Wes Brown – starting hisfirst league game in almost22-months – holding firm, there wasno way through.

The City manager said: “The re-action is very similar to the othergames that we have lost away. It’sincredible the way we lost thism at ch .

“Sunderland played really well alsodefending. The team is not in a goodposition, so I understand the waythey played.

“But they had just one shot on ourgoal. We had the possession, we hadthe chances and we didn’t score.”

Sunderland boss Gus Poyet wasthrilled by a win which gave theBlack Cats’ survival hopes a majorboost, but did his heart little good.

Asked if that was the biggest vic-tory of his managerial career to date, even eclipsing a 2-1 defeat ofarch-rivals Newcastle, he said: “Ye s,p ro b ably.

“I know that for the fans, for theclub, for the history, it’s always moreimportant to beat the biggest rivalswithout any doubt. That’s when youhave to win.

“But in terms of opposition, qual-ity, world-class players, this is thebiggest of my career, so it’s going to bea good evening tonight without anydoubt.

“I don’t know how my heart is rightnow. I don’t want to check it just incase it’s bad news, but it’s going to bea great evening.

“I am so pleased for the players. They need to believe. It’s easy to talk –we can say things and you can writet h i n g s.

“But at the end of the day, it’s theplayers on the pitch who need to beconvinced that this new way of play-ing football and defending is working, which is great for the future.

“So let’s see if we can keep thisgoing. It’s a good time to go into theinternational break.”

SWANSEA suffered yet more stop-page-time agony as Charlie Adam’spenalty earned Stoke a point in athrilling 3-3 draw at the Liberty Sta-dium.

Jonathan Walters and Stephen Ire-land gave the visitors the half-timeadvanta g e.

Wilfried Bony got one back early inthe second half, before Nathan Dyer

levelled and the Ivorian struck histenth goal of the season to putSwansea ahead.

But Swansea were denied the winagain when referee Robert Madleydecided Wayne Routledge hadhandled a Ryan Shawcross headerand Adam made no mistake from thespot.

Such a result had seemed unlikelyafter a lacklustre first-half displayfrom Swansea, but the shell-shockedWelsh side will feel aggrieved to nothave taken all three points.

The visitors had hit the front in justthe eighth minute. Ashley Williams

was off the field after treatment, when Peter Crouch flicked on a longball and Ben Davies and Chico Floresgot in each other’s way to allow Wal-ters to apply the finish.

They fell further behind with 25minutes gone. Leon Britton wasrobbed of possession and two lovelypasses from Walters and Crouchripped Swansea apart for Ireland toscore the goal.

PREMIER LEAGUELloris concussiongives Villas-Boas aheadache of his own

ANDRE Villas-Boas left HugoLloris out of the Tottenhamsquad to face Newcastle after hefailed to adequately comethrough a post-concussion as-sessment carried out on Sat-u rd ay.

The Portuguese claimed the26-year-old goalkeeper looked“ready to play” a week on frombeing knocked unconscious andin need of lengthy treatment onthe pitch after a collision withEverton forward RomeluLukaku last Sunday, but the med-ical advice suggested otherwise.

F I FA’s medical chief wasamong those to question the de-cision not to substitute Lloris atGoodison Park, yet the club’smedical staff said they were“totally satisfied that he was fitto continue playing” in thatm at ch .

The France captain was restedfor Thursday’s Europa Leaguewin over Sheriff Tiraspol afterthe blow, but Villas-Boas claimedafter that tie that Lloris wouldreturn against Newcastle.

However, Brad Friedel onceagain deputised in the 1-0 defeatafter which Villas-Boas revealedLloris failed to satisfactorilycome through ImmediatePost-Concussion Assessmentand Cognitive Testing (ImPACT)– a computerised concussionevaluation system.

“The medical department feltthat it was a bit too soon,” thePortuguese said.

“Probably had the game beenon Monday, he would haveplayed. I expect he will play forFrance (in the World Cupplay-of fs).

“For them, it was a bit too soonalthough clinically and medic-ally all the signs were that theplayer was ready to play.

“They did a test that they do,that they value a lot, called theImPACT test, so I had to stick towhat they said.

“They decided the playerw a s n’t good enough. That testd o e s n’t serve as an evaluationtool for an assessment, but theythought so and we’ve gone onfrom there because we respectthem a lot.”

Despite the fact Lloris wasagain unavailable, Villas-Boasstands by his previous stanceand rejected the notion that hisabsence yesterday indicated hehad been wrong to leave him onagainst Everton.

“No, not in my opinion, sorry,”he said. “Nothing has come tolight, the player is absolutelyf i n e.

“The tests that they have, youd o n’t know because they havemade different tests.

“I think, if obviously the clubagree, it would be welcome forthe medical department to speakup their voice about the situ-ation. We followed rules andt h at ’s it.”

worried about captain NemanjaVi d i c ’s head injury.

Just before half-time, Phil Jonesand Arsenal goalkeeper WojciechSzczesny clashed heads, for whichSzczesny seemed to come off theworst and Jones received a booking.

Serbia defender Vidic then suffereda head injury in a similar incident afew minutes later after he collidedwith his own goalkeeper David de

When he got up he was led down thetunnel holding his head and was re-placed by Tom Cleverley at the start ofthe second half.

Moyes said: “He’s gone to hospital.I’ve only just seen it myself.

“I didn’t see how bad it was fromthe touchline, but now I’ve had thechance to look at it again it’s a ter-rible sort of clash, it’s an accident andhopefully he’ll be okay.

“I’ll find out more from the medicslater on.”

United recorded a goalless draw intheir midweek Champions Leagueclash at Real Socieded and Moyes wasdelighted to get back to winningw ay s.

He said: “This was a big result forus today. Arsenal have been in terrificform this season and we had to playwell ourselves today to get the res-ult.

“I thought we started the game welland we were very good in the opening20 to 30 minutes of the game. And Ithought, in the end, our whole de-termination of effort, commitmentand good play helped us in the secondhalf when we were under more pres-s u re. ”

Moyes believes the Premier Leaguetitle will be a close call this season, and added: “I don’t think anyone’sgoing to run away with it.

“I think there are a lots of ups anddowns, it’s a close-run league thisye a r.

“I think there will be a few shocksand we’ve think we’ve had one or twoat the early part of the season, but I’mpleased we’ve been able to show alittle bit more consistency and a bitmore momentum, and let’s hope wecontinue that.”

The Ivorian made no such mistakein the 56th minute.

Stoke were having to deal withincessant pressure but could not holdout.

Flores, culpable in both Stoke goalsthen disgraced himself with an em-barrassing attempt to get Nzonzi sentof f.

Gea’s knee, and remained on theground for a number of minutes.

“I think there will be a few shocksand we’ve think we’ve had one or twoat the early part of the season, but I’mpleased we’ve been able to show alittle bit more consistency and a bitmore momentum, and let’s hope wecontinue that.”

exchange of words with Bony andpushed out at Flores’ chest, but theSpaniard collapsed in a heap clutch-ing his face and was rightly booked.

To compound Swansea frustra-tions they then spurned a gilt-edgedchance to pull a goal back.

Erik Pieters’ back pass found alurking Bony, but Begovic knockedthe ball away from the striker as heattempted to score, before savingRoutledg e’s follow-up.

The Ivorian made no such mistakein the 56th minute.

Stoke failed to clear a Jonathan deGuzman corner and the Dutchman

did not waste the second chance as hepicked out Bony, who powered in hisheader from close range.

Stoke were having to deal withincessant pressure but could not holdout.

Routledge surged past GeoffCameron to the byline and when Wal-ters’ headed clearance dropped toDyer, the substitute volleyed homewith the aid of a slight deflection.

Bony then struck what looked likebeing the winner, slotting home aleft-footed shot, but Stoke emergedwith a point in the late drama.

Bristol Rovers 2013-14The season so far . . .

Writes for theGreen ’Un

Who said my playing days are over? All I need is a couple of weeks to recover

Bristol Rugby 2013-14The season so far . . .

ALONG with my pal, Jeff Hazell, Iplayed in an over-35s match a coupleof Sunday mornings ago. In our caseit really should have been classed as‘well over-35s’.

Jeff is now in his mid-40s, and I amnow in my 50s, so just walking to thepitch was a major achievement. However, once on the pitch we areboth very competitive, but to be bru-tally honest we may have both lost ayard of pace, well in Jeff ’s case, ten!

People say that although you mightnot be as fit as in your youth, theexperience you have gained down theyears should make up for this de-ficiency. I am not so sure about this. For example, my brain kept tellingme to sprint after the ball, but myclapped out body was having none of

it. On the positive side though, at leastwe still attempt to play, and have a bitof fun along the way.

Jeff actually came out with a classiccomment during this particularg ame.

He was marking our opponent’scentre forward, who during the gamebecame very frustrated because histeam-mates hardly ever passed him

the ball. At one point, when ateam-mate yet again ignored hisshout for the ball to be played to him,we all heard his cry of desperationwhich was: “What am I? Invisible?”

Quick as a flash, Jeff bellowed out:“Who said that?”

Although we lost the game by theodd three goals, and ached for daysafterwards, we were both delighted tobe asked to play again this week.

One piece of advice offered to memany years ago which I have alwaysremembered was to play for as long asyou can, because one day you will beunable to.

Ricky Chandler, another old paland former team-mate of mine, had ahouse-warming party last weekend.

It had a Hallowe’en theme, and

guests were asked to arrive in fancydress, resembling a famous deadpeople. There were several ex-foot-ballers at the bash and one of them,Richard Gardiner, came dressed asGeorge Best, the former ManchesterUnited. legend. I can recall when Richplayed, and on the pitch and he neverresembled Best in any shape orfor m.

But at the party I had to do a doubletake, he was wearing a replica kit, along with Best’s trademark beard, and I have to say there was a truel i ke n e s s.

What really impressed me wasR i ch a rd s ’s ability to drink as much asBest.

In fact, he showed balance that thegreat man himself would have been

proud of, walking around all night ona slippery floor holding two pints inhis hands and not spilling a drop –what technique!

I went as Rod Hull, the late en-tertainer, who was famous for havingan Emu puppet on his arm.

I was the envy of a lot of the chapsthere, because I was the only one witha bird on my arm all night!

Our host, Ricky had offered a prizeto the person who in his opinion hadmade the best effort to look the partthat night.

Surprisingly, he awarded it to Stu-art Hall, the burly ex-HighridgeUnited. centre forward. Unfortu-nately though he wasn’t wearingfancy dress, and had only arrived atthe end to give me a lift home!
