Dear Greenmount families, The term continues its busy schedule with lots of activities around the school. Last week included some interesting classroom incursions and visits, and culminated in a wonderful session around Book Week. In the Junior Primary, the students were hammering away in a Bunnings workshop on site which was organised by Mrs Evans. The concentration on the faces of the students was absolutely solid as they focused on putting together a surprise for the dads – and it certainly was noisy! Meanwhile in Room 12 our School Chaplain Stuart Jackson was talking about keeping bees. He had with him a ‘mobile beehive’ and the students were lucky to each have a sample of fresh honey straight from the hive. This was an engaging session linked to their study of plants and pollination. And to finish off a very successful Book Week students were invited to come dressed as a favourite character and teachers rotated around classrooms reading their favourite book to eager students. This was a new twist to our celebration of Book Week organised by Mrs McGlew and Mrs Williams. Students also kindly donated 24 A4 boxes of books that we will be sending off to a needy school in Cambodia. Commemorative Events There have been many newspaper and media items recently related to commemorative events marking 100 years since WW1 and Australia’s involvement as a young nation. In WA the first major event will see Greenmount Primary School as the host site for the “1914-WA Diggers Depart” community event entailing a re- enactment of the departure of the ANZAC troops from the Blackboy Hill campsite through to Albany Harbour. The first part of this re-enactment is a bivouac on our school oval on Thursday 30 th October. Approximately 100 cadets will camp overnight then attend a service at the Blackboy Hill site the following morning before embarking on a train trip to Fremantle and then onto Albany. On the night the campsite will be open to the general public from 5pm – 7.30pm. This event is expected to draw great interest from the wider community. It is important to note that anyone interested in attending will need to register their interest via the Fremantle City website as this will be a ticketed event. Dear Greenmount families, The term continues its busy schedule with lots of activities around the school. Last

a favourite character and teachers rotated around classrooms reading their favourite

book to eager students. This was a new twist to our celebration of Book Week organised

by Mrs McGlew and Mrs Williams. Students also kindly donated 24 A4 boxes of books

Uniforms 2015 As mentioned in an earlier newsletter, two components of the school uniform are being ‘phased out’ – caps and black shorts, pants or jumpers. This follows discussions with staff, parent representatives and the School Council indicating strong support for this change. Consequently, the uniform shop will discontinue the sale of caps and black items, and provide wide brimmed hats and larger sizes of green shorts, pants and jumpers for parents to purchase. I would also like to remind parents and carers that it is important for all students to wear correct footwear to school. Shoes need to be appropriate for play and sport. As you would appreciate, this is a safety consideration and we require your support. Some students have also been reminded that they need to be wearing the green school jackets provided by their parents. We have always maintained a high standard of school dress at Greenmount and will continue to encourage all students to wear correct uniform and ap-preciate your cooperation in this regard.

SAFETY HOUSE WEEK

This year, our school will be holding a Safety House Week during Week 7

of Term 3 (Monday 1st Sept to Friday 5th Sept). The purpose of the Safety

House Week is to raise awareness of the Safety House Program amongst

our students as well as the wider Greenmount community.

As part of the Safety House Week, the P&C has organised the following

activities:

MONDAY 1st – SAFETY HOUSE SHOW. The Safety House Association will be visiting

the school to perform an educational show for our K to Y3 students on personal safety

awareness. Parents are welcome to attend the show which will be held in the undercover

area from 9.30am.

TUESDAY 2nd – YELLOW RECESS MENU. Order forms have been sent home today and

all items must be pre-ordered by Friday 29th August (spare order forms are available

from the office or the P&C’s Facebook page). Please note this is a special recess being

run by the P&C and normal menu items will not be available from the Canteen during

Yellow Recess.

WEDNESDAY 3rd – GUESSING DAY. Keep your eye out for the YELLOW guessing jar

coming to your classroom. Guesses are 20 cents each or 3 guesses for 50 cents. The win-

ner will be announced on Thursday and will get to keep the entire jar and its contents

(rumoured to be bananas!).

THURSDAY 4th – CONSTABLE CARE SHOWS. The Constable Care team will be visit-

ing the school to teach students some very important messages about getting to school

safely (K to Y3) and internet safety (Y4 to Y7). Parents are welcome to attend the

shows which will be held in the undercover area from 9am (K/Yr 1), 9.50am (Yr

2/3), 11.05am (Yr 4/5) and 11.55am (Yr 6/7).

FRIDAY 5th – HANDBOOK DAY – Students will receive their very own copy of the

pocket sized Safety House Handbook which is filled with loads of personal safety advice

for kids, fun puzzles and games.

For any questions about the Safety House Program, please contact our Safety House Co-

ordinator, Mardi Warner-Stanton on 0418 800 481.

TOY FUNDRAISER

The P&C is again organising the toy fundraiser this year through the popular Chalk and

Parent Direct toy catalogues. Many of the toys are similar to those used in schools and

play centres.

Keep your eye out for the two catalogues coming home next week. Orders can be placed

online or direct through the school. For every dollar spent, the school will receive a 20

cent credit to spend on educational resources for our students. Through the orders placed

last year, every classroom in our school received a $100 credit to spend on resources for

their students (that’s a massive total of $1,600 raised for our school!).
