M A K I N G T R E E S
On Friday 14 November, the year 4/5 children from rooms 11 and 12 worked
through the morning to create 500 new little ‘trees’. A farmer from Kojonup,
Mr Bruce Ivers, a passionate ‘tree man’ has propagated over one million trees
in the last few years. The trees are cuttings from healthy plants, dipped in honey
as the rooting compound and then planted into tubes of soil.
The plants chosen this time come from the eastern goldfields area for eventual
transplanting to farms around Hyden. Mr Len Edwards, the school
gardener, joined in to create hew hibiscus and other natives from the school
grounds. Some of the eastern goldfields plants will also be planted around the
school, further increasing the plant diversity at the school. Many of the new
plants are also bird attracting.
The children enjoyed the morning and demonstrated keen interest in the process.
Mr Ivers was most impressed by the energy and enthusiasm of the classes. He
will be returning the school’s ‘selection’ in time for a winter planting next year.
