1913: 100 years ago… 1938: 75 years ago… 1973: 40 years ago… 1998: 15 years ago…Society- Last evening, the Misses Stellaand Charlotte Dory charminglyentertained about forty couples at adancing party at the Goss hall. The hallwas beautifully decorated in green. Ateach end of the hall was a table daintilydecorated with yellow chrysanthemumswhere the Mesdames Ben Lee andHarry Lee presided over the punchbowls, Master Harry Dory and the littleMisses Wagner assisting in the serving.Music was furnished by an orchestra.Miss Stella Dory will leave in a few daysfor Oak Hall, St. Paul, Minn. where shewill resume her school work until theclose of the school year, when she willjoin Mrs. Bachus, superintendent of OakHall and thirteen other girls in a threemonths tour abroad.
Emphasis will be placed upon furtherimprovement of the Watertown parksystem in 1938, members of the parkboard said today in recounting work doneby that body in 1937. With continuedattention to the long-range program forthe recreational spots of the city headingthe list of "interests" of the board,Watertown will eventually have one of themost complete and beautiful systems inthe northwest. Work sponsored andsupervised by the park board during theyear ranged from improvement of theMunicipal Golf course, erection of a damon the Sioux river, remodeling of parkbuildings, planting of trees and shrubs, togeneral overseeing of beautification workin the city. Headed by F.L. Bramble, theboard is made up of A.C. Nelson, C.M.Lyons, Dr. I.G. Bergh, and A.G. Hestad.

Watertown Police Chief Ken Larson'splans to retire April 3 will become officialtonight when Mayor Brenda Bargerannounces his letter of intent to the CityCouncil. Barger has until then tocomplete a search for a replacement ofthe 29-year veteran lawman who cameup through the ranks culminating whenhe was named chief in 1994. Larson, 51,began as a police patrolman here inJune, 1969, and was named sergeant in1975, detective in 1978, captain in 1983,assistant chief in 1986, and finally chiefin 1994. He said he made his decision onthe April retirement date after it appearedthere would not be another major floodingdisaster in the community this spring andyet in time for the mayor and council tofully investigate options for hisreplacement. He heads a departmentwith 30 "sworn" officers and a total of 39employees. "Overall," he said, "It hasbeen a fantastic career."
