Introduction

Green distribution is quickly gaining importance throughout logistics and supply chain management. Firms and Industrialists are becoming more aware of "green" issues.

Green logistics, in the context of humanitarian logistics, encourages all stakeholders to consider the impact of their actions on the environment. The main objective of Green logistics is to coordinate the activities within a supply chain in such a way that the needs are fulfilled at "least cost“, and doing least harm to the environment.

Why to consider the environment

Carrying out business activities in Environment friendly ways can reward in the form of cost-saving and certain other positive aspects. Preserving the nature should be the foremost consideration, as it directly influences our quality of living.

Capacity of vehicles Fully utilizing the vehicles for the movement of goods Moving bulk stock in a single shift Carbon footprints impact would be lesser Cost-effective at the same time

Modes of Transportation

Appropriate modes of transportation be used Air transport only for expensive items (as a last resort) Ships are polluting the water and harming sea life Using alternative routes (or multi modal transport)

Saving cost by knowing the proper modes for moving each type of good

Page 7: Green logistics

Navigation techniquesfor vehicles Navigation software for cars, trucks, and other modes Reducing large distance mileages by providing shortest

routes Closest path to destinations causing lesser emissions to

the environment

Packaging Materials

Reconsidering materials used for packaging of goods Plastic having less recyclability Becoming a burden for the environment

Use materials that can be reduced, reused, and recycled!

Alternative Fuel

Fuel efficiency in vehicles would result in better sustainability for the environment

Modern gasoline is comparatively cleaner than old gasoline

Make use of Biofuel, as it would be cost-effective and close to nature

Reverse Logistics

Reverse logistics is also a part of green logistics. Which means that whether or not goods can be reduced, reused, and recycled

Some products stand out well in terms of being reused, and some of them become a burden for our planet

Factories and Plants

Must not be in close proximity to human population Harmful emissions caused by plants can be deadly

Should not run idle (to save cost and electricity) Factories pollute environment the most!

Newer Technologies

Use of Solar Powered panels Wind or Hydro power Generating electricity without relying on huge generators They cause emissions to the surroundings Cost effective ways

Innovation in logistics Finding newer and better ways to carry out business

Lucky Cement and sustainability award Lucky Cement Limited won the Green Supply Chain Award on Oct 10, 2013

for its sustainable operations and logistics network at the 3rd Intl Shipping, Logistics and Supply Chain conference held in Karachi

The conference and awards were organized by the Publicity Channel with the support of United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) in acknowledgment of the companies that are making sustainability a core part of their supply chain strategy

Earlier in the year Lucky Cement received level check ‘A+’ from Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), the only company in Pakistan to receive this rating

Lucky Cement has already won numerous accolades due to its innovative interventions in environmental sustainability. The company has initiated a number of sustainability projects like alternate fuel, energy conservation and plantation drives. Also in-house power generation units have been revamped to ensure environmental efficiency
