CRADLE OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION

As such, it is the birthplace of democracy, Western philosophy, the Olympic Games, Western literature and historiography, political science, major scientific and mathematical principles, and Western drama, including both tragedy and comedy.

SUMMARY HISTORY OF GREECEAncient Greece

Spread through the Balkans, the Aegean islands and coasts of the peninsula of Anatolia, now Turkey, constituting the so-called Hellas.

Greek civilization originated in Crete and Mycenaean cultures.

People of Greek origin, the Dorians, who used iron weapons, seized by defeating the Mycenaean Greece. The Trojan war described by Homer in the Iliad, was probably one of the armed conflicts that were related to the invasion. Sparta and Corinth became Doric major cities. With the Dorians began a period of cultural decline known by the name Dark Ages.

Greek cuisine is as an example of the healthy Mediterranean diet.

Greek cuisine incorporates fresh ingredients into a variety of local dishes such as moussaka, stifado, Greek Salad, spanakopita and the world famous Souvlaki.

Sweet desserts such as galaktoboureko, and drinks such as ouzo, metaxa and a variety of wines including retsina.

SOUVLAKI: Is a popular Greek fast food consisting of small

pieces of meat and sometimes vegetables grilled on a skewer.

THE TOURISM HIGHLANDS

Very near Athens, between the northeast coast of the Peloponnese

and the southern coast of Attica, are the islands of the Saronic Gulf. Crystal clear waters, white villages

The Pelion peninsula is a region of Greece which is famous for its

natural beauty. The style of Pelion architecture is unique, and is one

that has remained through the passing years. The best example of architecture of Pelion is the famous traditional houses found in several

villages. Many of the traditional houses and buildings are generally older three-story structures. The

base is always made of stone. The upper floors are a combination of

stone and wood.

Alefkandra is a neighborhood in the town of Mykonos is the most visited

of the island and one of the most visited places in Greece. It is well known as Little Venice because of

its houses built on water.

Fira, the capital of Santorini on island of Cyclades, it situated on the top of a cliff, near the crater of an ancient volcano ,sunk in the sea. The city was destroyed by a powerful earthquake but reappear again to become the queen of the Aegean.

Roussanou Monastery is one of the six monasteries (Meteora), dedicated to Santa Barbara.

In the beautiful island of Santorini is the Perivolas Hotel, ranked among the ten world's great hotels. It has a large pool, the light is mixed with the sea and the infinite. The sunsets from this wonderful place are unforgettable.

Apolo Epicurus temple.This famous temple is dedicated to Apolo the God of the sun and medicine.

Mount Lycabettus, which means mountain of wolves stands at the center of the city of Atenas.From this mountain you have a wonderful view across the city, including the islands of Aegina and Salammina. On top of this hill is loacated the church of St. George .It also has a widely used theater in the summer for concerts. You can reach the top in the cable car or walking.

• Kournas Lake is located on the western side of the island Crete. It is the only lake on the island.

• This island cycle is a major summer tourist destinations in Europe. The beauty of its white houses and its breathtaking beaches owes its reputation for beauty. It is a heavily visited island with lots of nightlife. On the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, has a pleasant climate at any time of year.

• The arch was built by the Roman Emperor Hadrian to mark the boundaries of the two parts of Athens, the old or the city of Theseus and the New Town or City of Adrian.

• The Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion is. This imposing rock was used to spot potential attacks from the sea.

On the east coast of the island Kefalonia or Cephalonia is the Grotto Melissani. The stalactites hang from the walls and ceiling of the cave flooded

with turquoise waters.

Salonika or Thessaloniki is the second largest city of Greece and is located northeast of this, one of the

most populous country and the main port and commercial center of Greek Macedonia. City is a

university city and industrial center with oil refineries, engineering and textile plants.

In the city of Heraklion is the Source of Morozini located in the central plaza surrounded by cafes, restaurants and shops, also called the Fountain of

the Lions. Along with the archaeological site of Knossos, Archaeological Museum and the Historical

Museum are of great interest.

The temple of Afaia. is situated on the northeast of the Greek island of Aegina in the Gulf of Aegina ,

there is not much of the original building , but that it is conserved kept invaluable.

The monasteries of Meteora, or monstarios

suspended from the sky, is an important place in

the Greek Orthodox monasticism. A large

number of monasteries were ruined or

destroyed during the Second World War by

the Germans since the Greek resistance took

refuge in them.

Magnificent and impressive channel to get the Peloponnese

Attica. The channel is an artificial waterway

connecting the Gulf of Corinth with the Aegean

Sea.
