Chances are the club will use alternate captains in 2018-19 until (and if) center Dylan Larkin gets that coveted “C” jersey. The club can stand an infu- sion of fast, young skaters and they will get it upfront and probably at the blueline to start the season. The kids and vets meshed well in training camp and pre-season as the Red Wings posted a nifty 7-1-0 record. The Purple Rose Theatre Company’s 28th Season A world premiere by Jeff Daniels, Diva Royale, runs now through Dec. 29. It's

the story of three midwestern stay-at-home moms who plan a last-minute trip to NYC to see Celine Dion perform (and maybe find a bit of the romance their lives lack) As soon as they board the plane things go very wrong.

Next is the world premiere Never Not Once, on stage Jan. 17 - March 16. Elea-nor, a biology major, brings her boyfriend home to meet her two moms. She tells them she's hired a private eye to find her real father. Her non-biological mom thinks it’s a great idea, her biological mom says it was a college one-night stand whose name she doesn’t remember. Eleanor is sent on a journey to an unexpected and explosive answer to the question, “Where do I come from?”

Arthur Miller’s All My Sons is up next, April 4 - June 1. Joe Keller desperately wants to hand his business down to his younger son. Joe’s wife is still waiting

for their eldest son to return home from war alive, and marry the girl next door. But their younger son and that same girl next door are in love and want to get married. A post-war American family in a pool of lies, greed, love and loss.

The world premiere of Welcome to Paradise concludes the season, June 20 - Aug. 31. Set in the Caribbean, centers around two people, who, despite their age difference, find love and acceptance in each other. With a generation gap (or more) between them, they discover they have more in common with each other than they thought. At what age can one find one’s soulmate?

Regular performances are at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, with Wed. and Sat. shows at 3 p.m. and Sun. at 2 p.m. Prices range from $28-$47. For tickets and more information call (734) 433-7673 or see purpleros-etheatre.org. The Purple Rose Theatre is located at 137 Park Street in Chelsea.

Michigan Opera Theatre’s (MOT) 2018-19 SeasonEugene Onegin will open MOT's new season, Oct. 13-21.

Tchaikovsky’s epitome of Russian Lyric Opera is the story of love and loss, squandered romance and tragic honor. The Barber of Seville is next, Nov. 10-18. This Gioachino Rossini classic is a story of how Count Almaviva wins the hand of this beloved Rosina with the help of his clever barber, Figaro.

Candide follows, March 9-17 at the Macomb Center and The Berman Center for The Performing Arts. Leonard Bern-stein’s funny, philosophical, quick paced take on Voltaire’s biting satire on the tragedy of human nature.

The MOT premiere of Hansel and Gretel takes the stage, April 6-14. This is the classic Brothers Grimm fair-ytale like it's never seen before. With award-winning puppetry by Basil Twist and music by Engelbert Hump-erdinck, it features flying angels, dancing gingerbread and a larger-than-life witch.

The Grapes of Wrath concludes the season, May 11-19. Based on the classic novel by John Steinbeck, it's the story of the Joad family on their quest to survive the 1930s Dust Bowl.

Other special events include, The Nutcracker Ballet, Nov. 24-25, Too Hot To Handel, an annual holiday tradi-tion, Sat., Dec. 1 and The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, March 15-17.

ArtParty27: Elevate! is the theme and title of this year’s annual fundraiser for The National Confer-ence of Artists (NCA). This unique art party and

auction is an event you won’t soon forget. If you don’t know some of the fine local artists, this is a great opportunity to see their outstanding work and pur-chase it at the Live Auction. Detroit is loaded with ar-

tistic talent, and ArtPar-ty27: Elevate! is your op-portunity to experience it first-hand.This is a most exciting

time for Art and artists in Detroit. Detroit area visitors are amazed at the quality of art and the quan-tity of fine art in the De-troit metro area. ArtParty27: Elevate! will

be held Saturday, October 13 at 5 p.m. at the NCA’s gallery at the Northwest Activities Center, at 18100 Meyers in Detroit.“ArtParty is a yearly event

that exposes the pure tal-ent that Detroit artists have to offer- while giving

art lovers the chance to take home these one-of-a-kind pieces,” comments NCA Chair Leslie T. Graves. For 44 years proceeds

have benefited NCA pro-grams which support the education and develop-ment of artists, and pre-serve, promote and de-velop African American culture through the visual arts and foster the creative forces of the artists that emanate from the Afri-can American and African World experience. African art describes

the modern and histori-cal paintings, sculptures, installations, and other visual culture from native or indigenous Africans and the African continent. Some of the well-known

NCA Michigan Member Artists include: David C. Driskell, a world renowned artist and one of the world’s leading authori-ties on African American art who received honorary doctoral degrees from four educational institutions in Maine. Other artists in-

clude: Gilda Snowden, John Biggers, Shirley Woodson, ‘Jide Aje, Stephanie Hill-Ross, Brenda Stroud, and Carole Morisseau, just to name a few.The 2018 ArtParty hon-

orary co-chairs are Jef-frey and Nicole Tate. The event begins with a silent art auction and live auc-tion preview. The live auc-tion will begin promptly at 6 p.m. with well-known auctioneer Jocelyn Rainey. A surprise celebrity auc-tioneer will also be at the event. Tickets for the event start

at $75 and increase to a $1,000 “Critics Choice” package. The package in-cludes four (4) tickets to ArtParty27, an original piece of art, a 1-year NCA membership, and 10 per-cent discount on NCA Gal-lery purchases. The definition of “elevate”

is to lift up, raise or im-prove. NCA offers an op-portunity year-round to learn and experience Afri-can American culture at its finest level.

This past weekend fea-tured two noteworthy major performances. UMS presented the Philadel-phia Orchestra with music director Yannick Nezet-Se-guin, who serves the Met-ropolitan Opera, as well.Lisa Batiashvili showed

incredible facility in Tchai-kovsky’s violin concerto. For an encore, Nezet-Seguin and Batiashvili performed a segment for violin and piano, in which Nezet-Seguin’s pianistic qualities were beautifully apparent. Nezet-Seguin, piano, will

be back at UMS on De-cember 16 together with mezzo-soprano Joyce Di-Donato. Program to be an-nounced. Check UMS.org. The Michigan Opera The-

atre opened their current season with a festive gala. A significant part of this gala included an unusual performance featuring so-prano Renee Fleming, in-credible dancers from the Joffrey Ballet, a remark-able setting with the MOT orchestra sitting onstage, and Stephen Lord conduct-ing. The MOT Children’s Choir sang as part of the

gala before the main per-formance. Fleming blend-ed pieces of classical opera with other pieces of Amer-icana. Her voice at that time sounded exceptional as well. She stated that she lives a glamorous life, fol-lowed with a song about the extensive traveling and hardships involved. Performances by the DSO

are taking place this week at Orchestra Hall on Fri-day, October 5th, 8 p.m., Saturday, 8 p.m., and Sun-day at 3 p.m. Celebrated Israeli violin-

ist Gil Shaham (pictured) is being featured together with conductor Leonard Slatkin in Prokofiev’s vio-lin concerto No. 1. In ad-dition, the DSO will be performing Elgar’s Enigma Variations and The Seventh Trumpet by Donald Erb. Erb (January 17, 1927 –

August 12, 2008) was an American composer best known for large orchestral works such as his Concerto for Brass and Orchestra. For more information, check DSO.org. The Jerusalem String

Quartet with Pinchas Zukerman violin and

Amanda Forsythe cello, is performing at the Rack-ham Auditorium in Ann Arbor this coming Satur-day, October 6, 8 p.m. The program includes

the string sextet from Capriccio Op. 85 by Rich-ard Strauss, Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht Op. 4, and Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence Op. 70. For infor-mation, check UMS.org. At the same time the

Chamber Music Society of Detroit is presenting Lon-don’s famed Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Cham-ber Ensemble performing Schubert’s Octet in F major for Winds and Strings, D. 803. The concert takes place at

Seligman Performing Arts Center, located at 22305 West 13 Mile Road, at La-hser Road, on the Detroit Country Day School cam-pus. Call (313) 335-3300 or see CMSDetroit.org. Choosing between the two events is a dilemma. The Scarab Club will be

at Grosse Pointe Unitar-ian Church, 17150 Mau-mee Avenue, Grosse Pointe on Sunday, October 7 at 7 p.m. Tickets at the door are $25, advance tickets $20. Performing are Mary Siciliano – piano, Dennis Carter – flute, Velda Kelly – violin, John McLaughlin Williams - piano/violin, Romona Merritt – viola, Nadine Deleury – cello. This is the opening con-

cert of CMSC’s 21st season! This program includes Ga-briel Faure - Piano Trio in D Minor, Florent Schmitt - Quartet Pour presque tous les temps, Egon Kor-nauth - Kleine Abendmusik for string quartet, Michael Gandolfi - Jigsaw Patterns for flute, violin and cello. As always, each piece on the program will be intro-duced by one of the musi-cians and the concert will be followed by a delicious and friendly reception.

Canton's Village Theater at Cherry HillThe Village Theater at Cherry Hill presents

their Spotlight on Youth’s Flapper, running Oct. 11-14. Revisit the 1920’s and meet Polly Pepper, a young flapper who really lives it up in the era of Stutz Bearcats, Ziegfeld girls, raccoon coats and gangsters. Polly is about to turn 18 and in-herit a fabulous diamond necklace. While she plans her birthday party, mobsters plan to grab the necklace. Tickets are $16. The Spotlight Players will stage Escanaba in Da

Moonlight by Jeff Daniels, Nov. 8-20. When the Soady clan reunites for the opening day of deer season at the family’s UP camp, 35 year-old Reu-ben holds the infamous reputation of being the oldest Soady never to bag a buck. Reuben goes

to any and all lengths to correct the wrong end of the family record book. Tickets are $18 for adults, $16 for seniors & youth. The Spotlight Players will also present It’s a Wonderful Life, Dec. 1 & 2. The story of George Bailey from

the small town of Bedford Falls, whose dreams of escape and adventure have been quashed by family obligation and civic duty, whose guardian angel has to descend on Christmas Eve to save him from despair and to remind him-by showing him what the world would have been like, had he never been born. Tickets are $18 adults, $16 for seniors & youth. Jingle Jury by the Spotlight on Youth runs Dec. 6-8 with tickets at $12. The Candy Courthouse is now

in session and the audience is the jury. The defendant, young Jim Dandy, has called Christmas spirit ‘a lot of nonsense’. Reindeer in training, an angel from atop a Christmas tree, wise men, holiday shoppers, Mrs. Cratchit and Tiny Tim all try to prove him wrong. The answer involves a teddy bear and some bad kids who aren’t so bad after all. The Jungle Book, March 7-10. Raised by a family of wolves since birth, Mowgli must leave the only home

he’s ever known when the fearsome tiger Shere Kahn unleashes his mighty roar. Guided by Bagheera, a no-nonsense panther and Baloo, a free-spirited bear, he meets an array of jungle animals and along the way learns valuable life lessons including good versus evil, friendship, loyalty and other values for surviving the ‘law of the jungle’. Tickets are $16 for adults, $14 seniors & youth. Gregory Popovich’s Comedy Pet Theater takes place on March 22 at 7 p.m. There are more than 30 pets

in the show, each one has been rescued from animal shelters. There are new additions to the show, a goat duo and a special guest star Mr. Diamond, a miniature horse. Following the performance there will be a pet meet and greet. Tickets are $30. For tickets and more info, call (734) 394-5300 or see can-tonvillagetheater.org. The Hilberry Theatre will open the 2018-19 season with the three-time Tony Award-Winning musical, Avenue Q, through Oct. 7. Winner of the Tony Triple Crown for Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book, Avenue Q is a hilarious spoof on children’s television…but for adults. The laugh-out loud musical follows three human and elev-

en puppet characters. The puppets are animated and voiced by actors who are present onstage, in full view of the audi-ence, but remain “invisible” to the other characters. For more info call (313) 577-2972 or see boxoffice@wayne.

edu. The Hilberry Theatre is located at 4743 Cass Ave., just west of Woodward in Detroit’s Midtown Cultural District.

Detroit Mercy opens with WittenbergDetroit Mercy Theatre Compa-

ny has opened their 48th season with the Michigan Premiere of Wittenberg, running through Oct. 14, written by David Davalos, at The Marlene Boll Theatre. It’s October of 1517 and the start

of another fall semester at the Uni-versity of Wittenberg. Hamlet (se-nior, class of 1518), John Faustus (professor, philosophy) and Mar-tin Luther (professor, theology) find themselves at personal and professional crossroads. Hamlet returns from his summer break

suffering from metaphysical trauma and a crisis of faith. Faustus nurses long-held af-fections for his mistress while Luther reaches the apex of his long-simmering outrage for the Church. Wittenberg is a revealing comedy about the story behind the stories of Hamlet, Doc-

tor Faustus and the Protestant Reformation. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 5, 6, 12 and 13, with 3 p.m. performances on Sundays, Oct. 7 and 14. The play is directed by Arthur J. Beer, Ph.D. and Professor of Theatre. Some special events include: Oct. 5, Community Night (tickets $15) and Oct. 13, Community Night Mingle (tickets $15). Tickets are $25 for adults, $18 for seniors, $10 for veterans and $10 for students (with

valid ID). For more info and tickets see TheTheatreCo.com or call (313) 993-3273. The Theatre is located at 1401 Broadway at Grand River, inside the Boll Family YMCA,

in Downtown Detroit.
