CIT Y SCENE
The Detroit Repertory Theatre is one of our city's most venerable live theatre spaces. Physically placed out of the way
along gritty Woodrow Wilson Ave. on the fringe edge of Highland Park and Detroit, this determined play-house has been a stalwart feature of this neighborhood since 1957.Going to this long-established
and welcoming playhouse is one of the city's great entertainments. First-timers will walk in past an interesting food menu from the ever-ready grill, and then just a few steps further, come face to face with an Art Deco bar, left over from a long-ago Swedish Club. From the git-go, there's no reason to dislike the Detroit Rep. But, then there's the live theatre,
where all the quaintness of the sur-roundings takes a back seat. This Equity professional theatre com-pany, now celebrating 61 years of staging provocative and diversely challenging plays, stands aside for nothing. On stage now, through March 18, is the Michigan Premiere
of Dauphin Island, written by Ink-ster native, Jeffry Chastang. Dauphin Island, is the story of a
stranded and divorced Detroit knockabout laborer, played by Jonathan West, and a mysterious woman living alone in Alabama's woodland, played by yolanda Jack (both pictured, above). West, is finally getting a break in
life, and is on his way to a good new job on Dauphin Island when his car breaks down near an isolated cab-in. As he makes his way toward the cabin's front door, he's confronted by its owner, a tough, no-nonsense woman...with a gun.At first, these two lonely social
misfits face-off as adversaries. As their story unwinds, we see clearly why fate has placed the two of them together. And, it's a story worth seeing. Tickets are $20. For more info,
see DetroitRepTheatre.com, or call (313) 868-1347. The Detroit Rep-ertory Theatre is located at 13103 Woodrow Wilson, just south of the Davison Freeway, in Detroit.

February is Black History Month and the debate continues…Is it still rel-evant? Does it make a difference? Or has it out lived its purpose? There are pros and cons to the subject, but can we ever out grow history? We’re making history every day, and
February offers just a small snapshot of the contributions African Ameri-cans have made to the American land-scape. In the words of Carter G. Woodson
known as the Father of Black History, “Those who have no record of what their forebears have accomplished lose the inspiration which comes from the teaching of biography and history.” His message was plain and simple, Blacks should be proud of their heritage and other Americans should also understand it.Perhaps if our children were learn-
ing more in the schools about their history, or even given incentive to just stay in school; Black History month, a month dedicated to learning and growing would not be necessary. But, if by highlighting historical events, people and historical moments in history will keep one child in school, or interest one child enough to study harder, learn more about his or her heritage or instill pride in young peo-ple that may not feel a sense of pride, then the goal of Black History Month has been accomplished. If we can hype new TV series, mov-
ies, sporting events, women’s histo-ry month, and others we can do the same for a piece of American history that will benefit us all. For example, all young women should know of Major Christina Hopper who made history as the first African American female pilot to fly a fighter jet (F-16 Fight-ing Falcon) during combat in a major war. She is also a wife, and a mother of three. Many have never heard of her. We must tell these stories to connect the dots and fill in the blanks for the next generation. There are many events and programs
this month that will both educate and entertain you; the Carr Center presents MSU Jazz Octets with Helen
Sung on piano on Saturday, February 10th at First Congregational Church of Detroit at 7:30 p.m. On February 17th, see Brinae Ali & Maurice Chest-nut: Beats + Rhythm + Tap Shoes 2.0 - Tribute to J Dilla and A Tribe Called Quest at 7:30 p.m. at the Garden Bowl Theater, 3929 Woodward Ave. The Wright Museum, one of the lead-
ing institutions that is dedicated to Af-rican American Culture celebrates the 7th Annual Dilla youth Days through Sunday, February 11 from 1-8 p.m. Kids will enjoy art, culture, education, technology and fun. This is a great way to learn about Black History. The Museum also celebrates Bob
Marley’s 73rd birthday with a Reggae Concert Party featuring Ras Kente & the Take No Prisoners Posse with Shirley Hayden & Milten Bennett, on Saturday, February 10 at 6 p.m. Tickets are $10 - purchase online, by phone at (800) 838-3006 or at the museum's information desk. Beans & Cornbread Restaurant in
Southfield is offering something new & different for Black History Month, lunch with a History lesson; soul food in a shoe box. On the outside are stories with his-
torical facts and figures. And inside is a delicious soul food lunch. "There were oppressive times in
the history of this country," Beans & Cornbread owner Patrick Coleman said. "Black people were refused ser-vice in public accommodations, rest areas, restaurants. let's provide some knowledge. let's tell the stories.” The box costs $1 in addition to the
price of a meal. A portion of the pro-ceeds will go to a youth program in Detroit. Coleman said, “Even though the box
represents an oppressive time, Cole-man said it pays tribute to people who lived through it.”There are also special Black History
Month Events at the Detroit Public li-braries, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the DSO Classical Roots concert and many others. Take some time to have fun and learn some American history at the same time.

Director Emeritus of the DSO, Neeme Jarvi, visited us in Ann Arbor during this past weekend. He brought the Estonian
National Symphony Or-chestra with him of which he is currently Artistic Di-rector. This was a great op-portunity not only to see him again but to appreci-ate his current musical ac-complishments. The orchestra sounded
impressive, which was not a very great surprise con-sidering their leader. Jarvi utilized the opportunity to perform works for Esto-nian composers Heino Eller and Eller’s student Eduard Tubin. These are not heard very often in concert here. Some of their works can be heard on youtube. The work by Eller Home-
land Tune set the atmo-sphere in the hall and pro-vided a sense of peace. The work by Tubin, Symphony No. 5 in b minor, was en-
grossing and entertaining. The timpani managed to
“go to town” in a couple of spots in a manner that left all breathless. Super-pianist Garrick
Ohlsson performed as so-loist in Brahms’ first piano concerto (d minor). One of the things that I really appreciated during this evening was the fact that Jarvi showcased the winds (woodwinds) by placing them at back-center-stage on an elevated level, al-lowing them to emphasize their function in the music. The strings, tended to be a little less dominating in this fashion, but were able to convey their own ex-pression. UMS is taking an active
function in this week’s production of Prokofiev’s ballet Romeo and Juliet (American Ballet Theatre) at the Opera House this weekend (pictured). For information, check UMS.
org or MichiganOpera.org. On Sunday, Feb. 11, UMS
is featuring the National Theatre live performance in HD of Stephen Sond-heim’s Follies, 7 p.m. at the Michigan Theater. This month of February
with the DSO is featuring a French festival with leon-ard Slatkin conducting. The first set in the series (Feb. 8, 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 9, 10:45 a.m.) includes mu-sic by Ravel, whose two pi-ano concerti are featured (Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, piano), the one in G major and the other for the left hand only. In addition, the Daphnis et Chloe Suite No. 2 will be performed. On Sat., Feb. 10 at 8 p.m. and Sun., Feb. 11 at 3 p.m. mu-sic by Saint-Saens will be featured, including among others, his Piano Concerto No. 2 (George li piano) and his Symphony No. 3 (organ). For further information, check DSO.org.
Foot Health Today
DR. JAMES SCHELBERG
FOOT CARE FOR DIABETICS QUESTION: I have heard that diabetics have special problems with their feet. Why is this? ANSWER: Circulation in the diabetic foot is often impaired and this can lead to a number of problems. For one thing, the diabetic foot has a reduced ability to fight off infection and disease. A simple cut or sore, if unnoticed or neglected, may develop into a very serious condition. The Podiatrist can monitor
circulation by checking your foot and leg for signs of impending problems. In addition, since decreased sensitivity of nerves can hide minor foot injuries, the podiatrist can check for these in order to prevent serious damage.

The coming weekend is replete with other items of interest, such as the Rack-ham choir performance at the Scarab Club on Sunday (Feb. 11) at 4 p.m., and a series of elegant perfor-mances taking place at the Steinway piano gallery. A DSO chamber concert will be taking place there on Monday, February 12, at 7 p.m. featuring the Ravel string quartet and the Faure piano quintet. Tick-ets are available through DSO.org. As we continue to pro-
ceed through the daily
calendar of musical perfor-mances, I note a UMS Porgy and Bess in concert taking place on Saturday, Feb. 17, 7:30 p.m. at the Hill Audi-torium. Kenneth Kiesler is the conductor. Featured are the U-M School of Mu-sic Theater and Dance cho-ruses, and the University Symphony Orchestra. On the following day,
Sunday, Feb. 18, at 4 p.m., there is a fundraiser at Fort Street Presbyterian Church with an enticing program of singing and performance. More on this next week.
