'Detroit After Dark' Photo Exhibit at DIA

Detroit After Dark , a dramatic photography exhibition of works from the DIA's permanent collection, is on display now through April 23, 2017. The extensive photo show includes architectural studies, street scenes and graffiti, as well as some of Detroit’s famous night haunts, like the venerable Livernois Ave. jazz club, Baker’s Keyboard Lounge, the legendary Grande Ballroom, and punk and garage rock venues such as Bookie’s Club and the Gold Dollar. This exhibition is a survey of Detroit photographers documenting the night, both past and present, and also features photography from visiting artists to the city, such as Robert Frank's rarely seen City Hall, Detroit from 1955.

To contrast the quiet streets and dramatic buildings, Detroit After Dark also includes photos of notable musicians, night clubs and art galleries where groups often got their start, and where these musicians could perform for smaller, intimate audiences. Among them are Patti Smith & Fred Sonic Smith, New Miami Bar by Sue Rynski (1980); Leni Sinclair’s MC5 at the Grande Ballroom, Zenta New Year, October 31, 1968; Jack White and Meg White by Doug Coombe (1999); Steve Shaw’s The Gories, The Willis Gal-lery (1989); and Marcus Belgrave at Baker's Keyboard Lounge, Detroit (1992) by Russ Marshall.

The exhibition also includes a new series of Detroit hip hop musicians Awesome Dre, Guilty Simpson and Nick Speed, among others, who collaborated with photogra-pher Jenny Risher to create dynamic portraits set against some of Detroit’s famous landmarks.

Some of the photographs allude to the city’s recent gen-trification. For example, DeBoer’s 2014 Merchants Row, shows a view of the empty lot where the Hudson’s de-partment store once stood, leaving Woodward Avenues’ Merchants Row fully visible. Jordano’s series Detroit Noc-turne features city views telling a story of Detroit’s ongo-ing challenges in the historic preservation of buildings, as seen in Michigan Train Depot with New Windows and Electric Lights, Southwest Side, Detroit from 2016.

Additionally, a small supplement of work from Paris and New York taken between 1920 and 1960 will also be on view, helping establish Detroit’s place in the visual tra-dition of nighttime photography.

A 112-page hardcover catalogue will be available with essays by Nancy Barr, DIA curator of Photography, Sara Blair, professor of English language and literature at Uni-versity of Michigan, and Chris Tysh, a Detroit-based poet and senior lecturer at Wayne State University. The cata-logue is published by the DIA and distributed by Yale University Press, and is $35.

For more information, call (313) 833-7900. The Detroit Institute of Arts is located at 5200 Woodward Ave., in Detroit’s Cultural District.

This past week brought back nostalgic memories in bringing back former DSO Music Director Neeme Jarvi. There was an open rehears-al on Wednesday morning. As Jarvi came onstage on Saturday evening when I was present, the entire audi-ence stood up to honor him. Three pieces of music were

on the program. Michigan Composer Michael Daugh-erty (b. 1954) was in the audience as his Tales of Hem-mingway was performed. This work was very well received. I could tell which stories he was depicting without difficulty. Rach-maninoff’s first symphony is not performed very often and tends to sound rela-tively new. These days we can listen to it at our lei-sure on the internet with the DSO performing. As his customary practice of old, Jarvi obliged the cheering audience with a couple of encores.Friday evening was open-

ing night of Detroit Chamber Winds and Strings at Hago-pian’s in the Birmingham Nightnotes series. I was delighted to hear our three new principal DSO players at this program. All three of these musicians have been introduced to the DSO dur-ing these past years by Ar-tistic Director Leonard Slat-kin. They include Yoonshin Song, our new Concertmas-ter, Wei Yu, Principal Cellist, and Principal Violist Eric Nowlin. Nowlin’s leading part was noticeable through the richness of his tone as well as lyricism in the slow movements. The program on Friday featured earlier chamber music pieces of Haydn and Beethoven, and Erno Dohnanyi’s Serenade

for String Trio in D Major, Op. 10. Dohnanyi’s musical style is very colorful and enticing. The intertwining of the

past and present was no-ticeable while watching Kitty Dubin’s play Rights of Passage, which is show-ing at the Jewish Ensemble Theatre (JET), located at the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield. Judaism is known for the distinct life ceremonies that tend to show similarities of life, starting with birth, the Bris (which is the Jewish cer-emony of circumcision), Bar Mitzvah, marriage, divorce, and death. However, each of these rituals has changed considerably within this past generation. The above events include some uncon-ventional situations, and the dialogs are witty and mingled with humor. Illus-trating this most effectively were the actors of this play: Fred Buchalter, Ruth Craw-ford, Meredith Deighton, Julia Glander, Brian Michael Ogden, and Jamie Warrow. Each actor plays different roles depending on their age. The play is showing through November 13. For further information, check www.jettheatre.org or call (248) 788-2900.

This coming week features Gian Carlo Menotti’s opera The Medium at the Modo Opera Company on Thurs-day, Friday and Saturday. For more information and to purchase tickets, please visit their website at www.operamodo.com. The Me-dium is part of Opera MO-DO’s The Darkness Within series, which explores three shorter, lesser-known op-eratic works. Menotti’s The Old Maid and the Thief runs November 11-12, and Jake Heggie’s Three Decembers will be performed Decem-ber 16-17. Friday features the Rack-

ham Symphony Choir at Kirk in the Hills at 7:30. Sat-urday evening with the DSO at Orchestra Hall features Stravinsky, Sibelius and a violin concerto by Jaakko Kuusisto. Kuusisto was born in 1974 in Finland. On Monday, October 31 at

the Jewish Community Cen-ter in Ann Arbor, a cham-ber music program featur-ing music of Beethoven and Brahms will take place. The program begins at 1:30 with Arie Lipsky (cello), Chad Burrow (clarinet) and Amy I-Lin Cheng (piano). For further information, check www.A2SO.org.

There’s a new addition to Detroit’s Midtown, The Cube. It’s exciting, fun, entertaining and brings a fresh new audience to the Midtown area. If you haven’t been there, plan to go soon and regularly, it is worth your time to see this newly transformed venue. Formerly known as the DSO Music Box, The Cube (Curated Urban Bound-less Experiences) has been renamed in honor of DSO Chairman Emeritus Peter Cummings and his wife Ju-lie, whose lifetime giving to the DSO has surpassed the $10 million milestone. “Peter and Julie share a

passion, dedication and vision that have had a pro-found impact on the DSO and our community over several decades of engage-ment,” said Anne Parsons, DSO President and CEO. “Their leadership and support has consistently helped the DSO push past boundaries and inspired us to realize sometimes unimaginable possibilities. In gratitude, and thanks to their ongoing partnership, we celebrate innovation, curiosity and creativity by adding the Peter D. and Ju-lie F. Cummings Cube to The Max.”The 475-seat recital hall

is located inside the Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center and has un-dergone a completely new rebranding; out with the old in with the new. All part of the DSO’s efforts to broaden its appeal beyond its core classical, pops and jazz audiences, Christo-pher L. Harrington has been named the new Man-aging Director and Curator for the Cube. Harrington is also the DSO’s Managing Director of the Paradise Jazz Series and former Di-rector of Audience Devel-

opment.“During my tenure at the

DSO, I’ve had the great for-tune to collaborate with forward-thinking leaders who are constantly chal-lenging the team to consid-er ‘what’s next?’” said the 31 year-old Harrington. “I believe that now is the best possible time to reimagine this unique space and its role in contributing to the cultural fabric of our city. In this exciting new chap-ter of DSO’s history, it’s a pleasure and an honor to have this opportunity to present programming that’s not only accessible, but also relevant to com-munities we’re currently serving and the new audi-ences we intend to attract with consciously curated experiences.” In a recent conversation

with Harrington, he talked about some of the possible programming; they include jazz, hip-hop, contempo-rary classical music, cham-ber music, techno, world music, post-jazz concert "hangs," salsa dances, yoga with musical accompani-ment and artist-curated

events that take advantage of experts to reach deeper into artistic subcultures in metro Detroit. "I've been told that we're

only limited by our imagi-nation," said Harrington. "We're going to see what works in the space." “When we envisioned Or-

chestra Place 20 years ago, with The Max as its cen-terpiece, the dream was to create a cultural center where diverse forms of music and performance art would be celebrated,” said Cummings, who re-cently launched a new real estate development com-pany, The Platform, which is focused on Midtown, New Center, and key city neighborhoods. “Now that we have Chris Harrington as a dedicated curator for alternative genres, the ful-fillment of that dream is at hand.”The Peter D. and Julie F.

Cummings Cube is located inside of the Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center Complex at 3711 Woodward Ave., in De-troit's Midtown neighbor-hood.

for this story came from his work as a young writer in the Catskill Mountain resorts. He wrote jokes for older comics who were of-ten "past their prime.""What I love about the

Even though I personally find the thought of watching any-thing of length on a cell-phone tablet screen or lap-top less than ideal, a great many people do just that. Fact is, there is now a whole generation who will never know about non-transport-able media. A WIFI culture where the whole world fits in your pants pocket. But, I like a bigger screen.

And, a Smart TV that takes up most of an inside wall is just about right. Lately, along with the few TV shows on broadcast and cable net-works that I kind of fancy, I’ve been binging on British TV shows and some stream-ing networks originals that I think have merit.Amazon Prime has some

gems, and I‘ve been waiting for the second season of sev-eral of their shows to start up again. The Man in the High Castle, based on the sci-fi novella by Philip K. Dick, concerns an alternative his-tory where the allies have been defeated in WWII and the Third Reich and Impe-rial Japan have divided the

United States into halves, each half ruled by one of the now victorious Axis powers. Starring the fetching Alexa Davalos and Luke Kleintank as star-crossed lovers on the opposite ends of a con-spiracy and Rupert Evans as the evil personification of Nazi supremacy. The new season will be available in mid-December.Another Amazon original

that is just top-notch en-tertainment is the police drama, Bosch, starring Titus Welliver, as the conflicted Hollywood police Detective Harry Bosch. Raised in an orphanage after his prosti-tute mother was murdered, Harry Bosch grew up to be a Special Forces ranger, and a celebrated bad-ass police-man. A movie made about his exploits paid for a swell mid-century modern house in the Hollywood Hills, where the now-divorced Bosch lives. By-the-book honest, Bosch is always on the fringe of suspension, targeted by an unethical system. Bosch is a very ac-curate adaptation of author Michael Connelly’s terrific book series. Bosch is also expected to return in early 2017, and I’m looking for-ward to it.There are several British

productions on Netflix that are worth checking out, as well. Two of which I’ve made my way through in a couple of weekends of concentrat-ed attention. A Canal pro-duction, Spotless, is made with financing from French and British TV companies, and concerns subject matter that I’ve never run across anywhere else. Taking place in London, it’s the story of a legitimate crime scene cleaner Jean Bastiere (Marc-Andre’ Grondin) who has his safe family life disrupt-ed by his reckless criminal-ly-inclined brother’s (Denis Ménochet) sudden appear-

ance on his doorstep. Jean is so skilled at bringing the goriest crime scenes back to pristine condition, that he’s soon pulled into the world of a crime kingpin’s mur-derous business. This series will return in 2017.One other series that just

plain amused me is the BBC production, Detectorists. It’s the very unlikely com-

edy of two eccentric lay-abouts (Mackenzie Crook and Toby Jones) with one driving passion – they use metal detectors to search for Saxon gold in the rural English countryside. Now, this doesn’t sound like a thunderstorm of excite-ment, at all. But, what it is instead, is such subtle and quaint humor, that it’s sur-prisingly compelling. Very gentle, very patient, and very smile-worthy. There are a couple of seasons on Netflix. But, my favorite of all of

these is playing now on PBS, and it’s the superbly done Australian production, Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries. The storyline takes place in 1920’s Melbourne, and stars Essie Davis as the in-trepid adventuress, Phryne Fisher; a liberated woman, former front-line nurse dur-ing WWI, who, through a twist of fortune, becomes a wealthy London aristocrat. When visiting Melbourne,

she becomes embroiled

in a murder mystery, and upon helping to solve it with her handsome foil, Detec-tive Jack Robinson (Nathan Page), she decides to make Australia her new home. Phryne sets up a fantastic

Victorian household, and the series is peopled with unusual and affable charac-ters who all join in to assist the Lady Detective in her many encounters with the dark side. This series evokes the era so well, with clothes, cars, fashionable surround-ings and mannerisms of the

day, that it is literally trans-portive viewing. And the palpable romantic

tension between the staid and official play-by-the-rules Det. Robinson and the carefree and flirtatious Phryne, never without her pearl-handled gold-plated revolver close at hand, is pretty delicious TV. There are three seasons of this show on Netflix, and a 4th season is expected, as well. You can catch the first sea-son on PBS on Thursday nights. I think very highly of author Kerry Greenwood’s creation, and the series is true to the books. The extra plus with any of

these original productions from Amazon, Netflix, et al., is that there are no commer-cials. All of these productions

are financed with subscrip-tion fees for the streaming services. And to be honest, the yearly fees for services like Amazon Prime and Net-flix combined are less than what most people pay for a month’s cable service. Pret-ty much worth every penny.
