Great Malvern, Somers Park and Malvern Vale SchoolsSchool closure: learning provision

Due to the acceleration of cases of Covid-19 (Coronavirus) the government has made the decision to close schools for a period of time. We still have a responsibility to ensure that children are educated and that the excellent progress they have made so far this year is not slowed.

We have put together a plan, so that children can complete work and revision related to their current and previous curriculum, as well as researching/ pre-learning for upcoming topics.

Daily activities:Reading/phonics expectation:

- Share a book with a parent (*Remember to read fiction and non-fiction)- Read twice in the day, for at least 15 minutes each time- Describe a character from your book;

What do they look like? Do they have any equipment with them? Are they a good or bad character? How do they speak? Can you sum up their personality in 3 words? Do you like this character? Why?

- Practise spellings from Year 3 Spellings for Summer 2 2020

Mathematics task:

- Times Tables Rockstars

https://play.ttrockstars.com/auth/school/student - TTRockstar logins will be sent home with child.

- https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button – This website includes practise of doubles, halves, division facts, number bonds and times tables.

A task related to topic or science work:

BBC Bitesize has lots of clips for a wide range of subjects. It can be used to give information.

Longer term activities (Science) Can you investigate shadows? How do they change during the day? You could set up something similar to the picture below. Measure or mark the shadow every hour during the day. How does the length of the shadow change? How does the direction change? Where is the sun in the sky at each point (high, low)? Why does the shadow change?

Can you make some shadow pictures? How is the shadow formed? Can you make a shadow play using a sheet, cut outs of your characters and give them voices?

Reading- Read quietly, or to an adult for at least half an hour each day. This may be split

into 15 minute chunks

Have a go at this reading comprehension about James and the Giant Peach.

Reading comprehension questions - deducing and inferring information.Read the extract. Read the question. Highlight the ‘find it’ answer. Write the answer.

‘Good gracious me!’ Aunt Spiker said, ‘What’s that awful noise?’Both women swing round to look. The noise, of course, had been caused by the peach crashing through the fence that surrounded it, and now, gathering speed every second, it came rolling across the garden towards the place where Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker were standing. The gaped. They screamed. They started to run. They panicked. They both got in each other’s way. They began pushing and jostling and each one of them was thinking only about saving herself. Aunt Sponge, the fat one, tripped over a box that she’d brought along to keep the money in and fell flat on her face. Aunt Spiker immediately tripped over Aunt Sponge and came down on top of her. They both lay on the ground, fighting and clawing to get up again, but before they could do this the mighty peach was upon them. There was a crunch. And then there was silence.

1. What did the peach crash through?

2. What was the peach rolling towards?

3. Write 3 things that the Aunts did when they saw the peach rolling.

4. Which Aunt tripped over a box?

5. What did Aunt Spiker trip over?

6. What do you think made the ‘crunch’ noise?

7. What do you think was happening inside the peach at this time?

CHALLENGEWrite 3 ‘find it’ questions for another person to answer.

Maths- 20 minutes Times Tables Rockstars practise each day

https://play.ttrockstars.com/auth/school/student - TTRockstar logins will be sent home with child. - https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button – This website includes practise of doubles, halves, division facts, number bonds and times tables.

Let’s work on some money questions

Firstly – list the different coins and notes that we have.

Can you think of at least 2 different ways of making these amounts using different coins/notes?

35p

£2.75

£10.50

Can you change these amounts by adding or taking away one (or more challenging two) coins? Write the number sentence that would show this.

Eg 35p + 10p = 45p

£2.75 – £0.50 (50p) = £2.25

Have a go the accompanying worksheet with a mixture of money problems on. Also further questions on adding and subtracting amounts of money. (A life skill too!) You can use written methods for addition and subtraction or a numberline to solve.

£1.34 +£3 £4.34 + £0.20(20p) £4.54 +£0.03(3p) £4.57

£1.34 + £3.23 = £4.57

Let’s write a story (or a chapter from a story)

Using James and the giant peach picture above as an idea. Think about your story. It needs to include you and a fruit/or vegetable.

Where will your fruit/veg come from? Did you grow it? Did it appear magically? Did you find it? How big was it?

Was there anyone else with you/on your fruit/veg? Describe your fruit/veg Where did you go with your fruit/veg? (did you fly like the picture above?

Did you use magic? Did you float away on water? Did it grow legs and walk?

What happened in the end?You may want to draw some pictures to accompany your writing.

Don’t forget, for successful writing, we need to use:Capital letters and full stopsCommas and speech marksOur best vocabulary (amazing adjectives, powerful verbs, super similes)

You will want to plan on day 1, brainstorm great vocabulary and ideas on day 2, write the story day 3, illustrate your work on day 4 and check and edit on day 5. That way you won’t get too tired as you work and produce a fantastic story.

I’m excited to see what you come up with.Science

Can you draw some labelled diagrams showing what you have learned from these?Annotated drawings are a very useful tool in Science work.

TopicThis term we would be studying Rainforests

The rainforests are being cut down in large areas for several different reasons. Can you find out what these reasons are? There are some clues in the pictures above.

Several organisations campaign against this destruction. Can you find out any of their names? Why do you think it’s important to save the rainforests?

ComputingLet’s investigate some vocabulary and key concepts in computing. Can you find out about and make a glossary explaining these computing related words?
