Shaker furniture originates from the religious

movement in North America known as ‘The

Society of Believers in Christ’s Second

Appearing’. Shakers lived and worked together

in communities where they created stunningly

simple, beautifully crafted items of hand made

furniture to ‘the glory of God’.

Shaker furniture is widely

admired worldwide for its

simplicity, innovative joinery,

quality, and functionality.

Shakers made furniture for

their own use, as well as for

sale to the general public.

Many examples of Shaker furniture survive and

are preserved today, including such popular

forms as Shaker tables, chairs, rocking chairs

(made in several sizes), cabinets, and bedsteads.

Collections of Shaker furniture are maintained

by many art and historical museums in the

United States and England, as well as in

numerous private collections. Its appeal to the

modern eye is undeniable, with a very ‘less is

more’ feel throughout. The underlying principles

of Shaker design have given inspiration to some

of the finest designers of modern furniture.

Our business started in 1985

when Alan Eldridge began

making contemporary furniture.

The business has grown to a

team of ten craftsmen and in

1997 we began making Shaker

furniture.

Since then we have made a wide range of

Shaker furniture such as beds, wardrobes,

blanket boxes, chests of drawers, dining tables,

occasional tables, dressing tables, peg rails etc.

Our trained craftsmen enjoy making these

pieces because they are as challenging as they

are rewarding and whilst they appear elegant

and simple they must be extremely well made.

Each piece of Shaker furniture is

made almost entirely of solid

wood using maple and cherry

and occasionally oak or walnut.

As each Shaker of Malvern piece

is made individually, your exact requirements

can be met.

This is an extremelyversatile table andembodies the Shakerideology of ‘Beautyrests on Utility’.

At full length it is 9’(276cm). At its smallestit is 4’ (122cm) long. Itis 3’ wide (91cm) and291/4”(74cm) high. Atits longest the tablewill seat 10 to 12adults and in thesmallest position willcomfortably seat 4adults. Each leafmeasures 19” (49cm)and these store neatlybeneath the table.

The Shakers used pegrail in nearly every room.They used it to hang coats, hats, brooms andeven chairs while the room was cleaned.

Our pegrail can be supplied in lengths to suityour room. They are available in cherry andmaple or may be left unpolished for painting.Our craftsmen will advise you on peg spacingto ensure that the finished rail looks the best.Please ask for a quote if you would like thisbespoke service.

The screw holes for attaching to the wall arecountersunk and are hidden once the pegs areinserted.

The pegrail shelf has a groove along the lengthof the shelf to allow items to be displayedwithout slipping. As with all our pegrail, thewall fixing points are hidden behind the pegs.

The Shakers were among the first in America toproduce chairs on a large scale. Their first chairssold in 1789. Over the years they made manyrefinements in design and proportion becauseof their belief that the most simple things arealso the most beautiful. The advantage ofbuying a Shaker of Malvern dining chair is thatthe design and materials have been tested overtime and found to be successful.

The backpostsare bent to the rearand the back rails aregenerously curved, sothat the back ‘fits’ aperson - short or tall -perfectly. Chairs

Our small team of craftsmen manufacture all of

the furniture in our Malvern workshop with the

exception of the chairs. The chair components

are made in an American workshop and we

assemble, polish and weave them here. The

tape we use is a heavy duty 100% cotton canvas

webbing which has been yarn dyed with fade

resistance in mind. There are 14 colours to

choose from and we are very happy to provide

tape samples on request.

If you have already purchased Shaker chairs

and would like us to re-weave them in an

alternative colour we are happy to do this.

Alternatively, we can supply the tape and

weaving instructions if you would like to have a

go yourself.

about our products

At Shaker of Malvern we care greatly about the

environment and this is why all of our timber is

from certified, sustainable resources. As we

have been making furniture in Malvern since

1985, we have built a good relationship with

our suppliers and Alan personally selects only

the very best timber. As with all natural

products, the grain and colour of wood varies

and this adds to the beauty of a hand finished

bespoke product. No two pieces are identical

and therefore each item is unique to you. If you

order more than one piece of furniture we go

to great lengths to ensure as much consistency

with colour and grain etc. as possible. This

personal service is the advantage of buying

from a small company that takes pride in

guaranteeing customer satisfaction. We use solid

wood throughout our furniture except

occasionally where for technical reasons solid

wood veneer is preferable. Our products are

finished with a durable coat of lacquer unless

you specifically request an oil and wax finish.

Caring for your ShakerFurniture

To keep your furniture in good condition we

recommend that, apart from regular dusting

with a soft duster, you simply wipe over with a

damp cloth and buff with a dry one. You

should not use sprays and polishes.

Furniture Delivery Costs

We use a specialised furniture delivery service

and are happy to quote for delivery world-wide.

The cost depends on the size of the furniture

and your location. If you are ordering a smaller

item it may be possible for us to deliver this by

Royal Mail or courier. Please ask for a quote.

How long will my order take?

We will always tell you this when you place the

order. Please ask if you have a deadline to meet

and we will do our best to help you achieve

this, but generally speaking larger items are 6 -

8 weeks, though at busier times it could be 10

weeks. Smaller items such as pegrail are usually

less than 6 weeks. You will always be kept

informed when you can expect delivery and our

furniture delivery service aims to work with

you. We carry very little stock as most people

want a bespoke service. High quality furniture

takes time to make and is worth waiting for.

You can rest assured that we will not make

promises we cannot fulfil. If you would like to

visit our workshop to see your furniture being

made we would welcome you

by appointment. Alternatively

we can send photographs of

the production via email if you

would like to see how it is

progressing.
