Page 2: Gratitude Report 2015

2014 HighlightsWithout the continuous support of you, our donors and adopters, we would not be able to reach the achievements we set out each year to accomplish. We have renamed our annual report to the Gratitude Report to show our gratitude for your support. Let us share just a few of our highlights:

* We are almost at the No-Kill level! The community save rate for 2014 was 84%!* Our tireless veterinary partners spayed/neutered 1165 cat and 948 dogs for a total of 2103 surgeries.* From January 2014 to December 2014 we hosted 5 Wellness Clinics. * During those clinics 792 cats and dogs were seen by Dr. Eric Lorens of the Pet Clinic of Rocky Mount. * From January to December we accepted 2721 animals from our animal control facilities, surrounding counties, and our community. * 579 cats and dogs were adopted locally. * 1984 animals were rehomed through our rescue partnerships. * Through our partnerships with Food Lion and Wal-Mart to collect torn bags of dog and cat food we were able to distribute approximately 37,000 pounds of food to in-need families in our community.

We have monumental dreams and goals for the future of this facility and the community including expanding our Wellness Clinics and our spay/neuter program, the Snip Trip. We want to see our community reach the No-Kill status by bringing the community euthanasia rate below 10%.

We could not continue our life-saving work without you and your support. Please stop by to see the animals who have been saved by your dedication.

MHC SPCA Gratitude Report We speak for those who have no voice! Page 1

It is hard to believe that yet another year has gone by and that I am finishing up my second year as Executive Director of this lifesaving organization. It continues to be an honor and a privilege to serve in this capacity. Like so many years before, fiscal year 2014-15 has seen its share of challenges but has proven to be one of our most successful years yet! We have improved our financial position, grown our community awareness, strengthened our internal operations, and, most importantly, increased the number of lives saved. The remarkable dedication and efforts of our staff, volunteers, and board members, who have provided extraordinary care and support while we strived to achieve so much, have enabled these accomplishments. These important people serve our organization not only as our compass but also as our backbone, with-out which we would lose sight and fall short of the lifesaving efforts we are currently able to provide. Last year we focused on our main goal: operating the SPCA as a professional animal welfare organization with a direct emphasis on increasing adoptions by improving the adoption experience. I am happy to report that our efforts paid off. We had been trending upward in our adoption and positive placement numbers over the last couple of years, but this year we took a greater leap forward – providing services to over 2,700 animals. While this is a welcome increase, everyone will agree that we want and NEED to do even better. It is my commitment to each of you as friends of the SPCA to build on our momentum, to strengthen our organization, and to stay true to our mission of saving more lives. I am so proud of all of our staff and volunteers for increasing our positive outcomes, and I look forward to seeing what we can accomplish together in fiscal year 2015-16. I speak for the entire staff and board of the Martinsville-Henry County SPCA when I humbly say “Thank you!” for the love, trust, support, and dedication you have given as we continue to grow, strive for the achievable goal of a 100% No-Kill community, and save and enrich the lives of the animals in our area.

Message from the desk of Nicole Harris, Executive Director

We began 2014 by pledging to increase not only our adoptions, but also overall posi-tive outcomes for the animals in our service area. Last year we found homes for 2,700 dogs and cats. So far in 2015, we’re off to a roaring start. As of the end of June, we have already found homes through adoption, rescue, and owner return for more than 1,500 pets — that’s more than halfway to our goal in only six months! Through adoption events, outreach, and our day-to-day adoption programs, I’m confident we’ll be able to hit that 2014 number and maybe even exceed it! And as we focus on saving lives, it is also important to look at the preventive side of the equation. Each spring and sum-mer, we see a significant increase in the number of puppies and kittens entering our county and city pounds and shelters. Our low-cost spay/neuter program, Snip Trip, has been established to help prevent the birth of countless unwanted puppies and kittens. We know we’re making an impact. As of this letter, we’ve already sterilized more than 900 dogs and cats, and we’re on track to sterilize up to 900 more by the end of the year. Whether through the dedication of our volunteers and foster families, our passionate and committed staff, or cutting-edge programs like the Critter Summer Camps, bi-monthly wellness clinics, low-cost spay/ neuter, transfer/transport programs partnered with countless rescues, or simply our volunteer and foster programs, the SPCA is leading the way in saving lives in our community. As you would expect, managing our facility is a

constant and costly venture. The costs associated with maintaining our aging internal and external infrastructure continue to increase. We make an effort to control costs and manage resources, but as the need for our services increases, our need for funding and support increases as well. We want to continue expanding our services and programs. Given the needs of our 10-year-old facility and our desire for expanded programs and outreach, we foresee capital improvements in our future. We, the volunteers, staff, board members, and friends of the Martinsville-Henry County SPCA, are united by a common goal: our mission to provide warm shelter, medical care, food, and love to companion animals in need. The board of directors is committed to moving our organization forward and will work diligently to further our mission in the hope of saving as many lives as possible. I don’t want to miss the opportunity to acknowledge and thank you for the role you play in helping us achieve our goal of ending need-less euthanasia. We couldn’t do it without you.

Message from Scott Stone, Board President

Run for your life in the 2015 Zombie Run!The SPCA Zombie Run on October 24th kicks off in Uptown Martinsville. During the 5K race, run-ners will weave their way through zombie-infested territory on the Dick and Willie trail. During the one mile Fun Run, runners must avoid flag-grabbing zombies to cross the finish line with the most flags.

5K - $35; Fun Run - $25; Combo - $55The SPCA needs sponsors. What a great way to showcase your alliance with the No-Kill movement and the SPCA, while supporting a healthy option for citizens who are running for not only their lives but also for the lives of thousands homeless and neglected animals in our community. Overall benefits of sponsorship:1. Your sponsorship will support the Martinsville-Henry County SPCA 5K Zombie Run and 1-mile Fun Run.2. Publicize your alliance with the MHCSPCA and our community’s No-Kill Movement initiative.3. Help raise community awareness for the importance of spay/neuter programs for cats and dogs in our community.4. 5. Support the funding of educational programs throughout our community to prevent future abuse and animal neglect.

Over 2,700 animals came through the SPCA in 2014. Your sponsorship will provide funds for the care and comfort of our shelter animals as they wait patiently for placement in their “forever homes”.

We need volunteers for this event! We need cheerleaders, traffic controllers, make-up artists, and zombies!! All volunteers can sign up at the shelter. “Zombie” volunteers must sign up by October 5 and are required to attend at least 2 sessions (1 per week) of “Zombie School” to be held at the SPCA shelter on:

Farewell! In May of 2015, after serving as the Director of Development for the SPCA of MHC, I made the difficult decision to resign my position in order to spend more time with my family. It was a whirlwind year and a half…to say the least! I was stunned to discover the reach and the huge impact that the SPCA has on our community. The staff of your SPCA is an extremely dedicated group of people and the organization is more than worthy of our support. I dare say that the SPCA can stretch a dollar further than any non-profit in our area! I would like encourage you to continue supporting this wonderful organization with your financial contributions and/or your time. Both are much appreciated. The things I miss most are my daily puppy fixes (in case you didn’t know…puppy breath is awe-some) as well as the wonderful people that I grew to love during my tenure. I wish everyone at the SPCA contin-ued success and will continue to volunteer at the shelter. See you soon! Melissa

Dear Friends of the SPCA: I would like to introduce our new Director of Development and Community Relations, Mary Compson. Mary officially joined the organization on July 20; she will be helping us with marketing, community outreach, public relations, and fundraising as we continue to grow, expand our impact, and save lives throughout Virginia and North Carolina. Mary is a hometown girl. She grew up loving and respecting animals on a farm in Figsboro where her father’s family raised cattle and horses. She has had a varied career, working in the arts, restaurant management, business administration, technical writing, and education in Georgia, Louisiana, Tennessee, and various locations in Virginia. From 2001to 2015, Mary worked as an English teacher in Henry County and Martinsville City schools. When Melissa White ended her tenure as Director of Development, Mary applied and was hired to the position. Mary brings varied skills, creativity, and passion for humane society to the position. She plans to foster the relationship between the MHC-SPCA and the local public school systems as a way to spread the mission of the organization and also help promote the talents of the students of Martinsville and Henry County. She has had success as a grant writer and will pursue grant funding for expanded programming.

Rocking Out Wellness Clinics in 2014Wellness works! In our earlier years, the SPCA hosted low cost rabies/ vaccines clinics. Pet owners could come to the shelter, sign up, and wait for service with lots of other pets and pet owners. This was not a sophisticated system, but that method was typical of traditional rabies clinics and yielded high numbers of clients seeking the service. Throughout the hustle and bustle of these clinics, we continually heard “Thank you.” Local citizens told staff, our faithful Veterinarian Dr. Eric Lorens, and each other how thankful they were to receive services at discounted prices that enabled them to fall within compliance of county and city ordinances and provide yearly vaccines for their animals. Prior to these clinics, many animals in attendance had never received vaccines. By 2013, the SPCA, driven by the appreciation and further needs of the rabies clinic clients, wanted to bridge the gaps between what these animals needed and what our clients could afford. We decided to launch a Wellness clinic to continue the progression of humane education and help eliminate the barriers that kept local pet owners from seeking their own veterinarian services and developing relationships between their veterinarian and their animal. These bi-monthly clinics needed a more personal feel where owners could communicate one-on-one with the vet. We changed the way we saw patients and clients, asking for appointments rather than first come first serve, and began to add basic physical exams for every visit, creating a situation that felt more like traditional vet service with less like a rabies clinic. We focused on edu-cation and continuing care, even going as far to provide suggested local vets names and addresses. We are always happy to help serve our community; our mission is to promote self-sustaining efforts that help individuals become respectable pet owners, making change happen with the “animal owner “in the mirror! By taking time to talk to each client and answer questions, we are helping them to receive needed services and we are educating them about full-service practices that can provide care that is very necessary to their animals. As 2015 is coming to an end, we have achieved most of what we set out to do: providing basic services at super-discounted prices to help pet owners meet mandated requirements of our city and county and supportive services that promote the welfare of animals. The SPCA will continue to offer these services to animals and people in need. Our next clinic is scheduled in October, and the staff of the SPCA is ready to help schedule an appointment as soon as our date is confirmed. We are currently creating a call list for appointments. Call the SPCA at 276-638-7297 to add your name to the call list.

In 2012 the SPCA’s thrift store Fido’s Finds and Kittie’s Kol-lectibles first opened its doors for business. Our dream for the thrift store was to see it blossom into an independent business run entirely by volunteers and stocked by donations from our commu-nity. Some of our first donations to this venture came from estates, filling the store with elegant and classic items for sale. Volunteers joined the Fido’s team to handle the register and mer-chandise, making it possible for all proceeds to come back to the SPCA. Our dedicated ladies staff Fido’s Finds and Kittie’s Kollect-ibles five days a week.If you are interested in making an estate donation or a donation of furniture, household items, antiques, or books and need help load-ing or unloading, contact Alice Ann Blevins at 276-656-1101.

On November 1st the SPCA held our first Zombie Run at the Fieldale Textile Heritage Trail. This event hosted a 5K-race through territory filled with lurking zombies and a one-mile fun run in which participants defended their flags against reaching zombies. Despite the cold November weather with rain and wind, over 40 runners participated. This inaugural event generated over $3,500 for the SPCA to be used toward the Spay/Neuter Fund and the Cat Cage Replacement Fund. Thank you to the generosity of our runners, volunteers, and sponsors for this fantastic event.

The third annual Fur Ball kicked off on February 21st with Mardi Gras flair! This black-tie event featured a Cajun-themed dinner, dancing to live music by Spare Change, a photo booth, great raffle prizes like diamond earrings and a week in Myrtle Beach, and auction items. Despite hazard-ous weather, this event was the party of the year for the SPCA! With the generous support of our sponsors and attendees, this event raised over $40,000 for the Spay/ Neuter Fund.

In 1994 the SPCA became partners with North Shore Animal League, beginning one of our most fruitful and long-standing partnerships. This year marked the 21st year of our partnership with North Shore, which, in 2015, was awarded the Hallmark Channel’s Hero Award for its work on behalf of homeless ani-mals. To highlight our long-standing partnership, North Shore Animal League, American Humane Association, and the Hall-mark Channel arranged the largest single transport in our history. On May 26th, 63 puppies, 23 dogs, and 36 cats were loaded onto two vans for adoption through North Shore. Our partnership with North Shore allows us to open our doors for puppies from 16 other counties. We look forward to the continuing growth of our relationship with North Shore Animal League.

No-Kill Movement in Martinsville-Henry County

Here we are, sitting near the middle of the 2015 calendar year, the beginning of a new fiscal year, and almost at the three-year benchmark of sustaining efforts for a “No-Kill” community. Last year, our com-munity-wide euthanasia rate was 16%. By comparison, our neighbor-ing county had a euthanasia rate of 85%. It has been a long road; our community and this organization have faced many challenges together. We have endured many self-evaluations and budget concerns because our community has, along with us, suffered economic decline. We had to factor the population numbers with projected population growth of cats/kittens and large breed/pit bull-type dogs, populations we have had little success with in the past. We were able to pull together the right tools, staff, information, and community support. Now we look back at the beginning struggles and find it hard to realize that this organi-zation ever ran any other way. With community support, established rescue partnerships, and the undying will and engagement of some very beautiful people, we will continue our “No-Kill” goal for a fourth year in 2016. We are in an aggressive campaign to establish more in-depth humane educational programming; we hope to grow and expand our current Wellness Clinic and low-cost spay/neuter services. Ultimately, we hope to reduce the need for a shelter system by promoting respon-sible pet ownership and impacting the overpopulation problems in this area. With your continued love and support; the unsurpassed dedication and limitless hours of service from our volunteers, board and staff; and finally, the strong partnership of the SPCA, the Henry County Animal Control, and the Martinsville Animal Control, we will remain commit-ted to our goal and give life a chance!

Hogs for Dogs was started in 2007 in memory of Alma Isley. With each year the number of participants has grown. 2015 was our biggest year yet with over 100 riders attending the eighth annual Hogs for Dogs. This year the event was held in memory of Harry Wayne Oakes II. When the ride kicked off, the line of riders stretched for miles down the highway. This year even our neighboring community of Danville participated by hosting the third stop for the ride at the Thunder Road Harley Davidson store. During this event, our

On Saturday, May 9, the SPCA’s world was turned upside down with one phone call from our Animal Control Officer E. C. Stone about what appeared to be a case of animal hoarding. Martinsville Animal Control doesn’t house felines, and we have always been there to help with housing or holds for them as needed. Initial reports were that there were at least 30 cats that had been left unattended in a house with little to no food or water for a period of two weeks. We agreed to go over and help assess the situation. To say we were unprepared for what we were walking into was an understatement! Having assisted with other hoarding cases, we were physically prepared with all the necessary equipment, staff, and triage plan, but none of us were emotionally ready for what we were about to experience. Upon our arrival at the house, we were forced to wait for someone to unlock the door. As we waited, the smell outside the home

was putrid, while inside the home a multitude of cats were frantically scratching at the door, jump-ing at the windows, and crying out in desperation. The cats were literally begging for rescue! As we entered the property, we were met with the horrible reality of the situation. It was the most horrific sight that any of us had ever experienced or could ever have imagined. Words cannot describe the level of filth, the smell of ammonia and feces, and the feel of it under our feet. The initial rescues were easy because the cats were climbing all over us in a desperate attempt for some kind of help. We began our search, which encompassed trash-filled rooms with piles of feces a foot and a half deep in some places. There was not a clean spot in any part of this home. We found cats that had been locked in rooms with no access to water or the feces-covered food that had been strewn across the floors downstairs. The litter boxes that were provided were overflowing as was most every surface in the home. We removed 18 live cats that first day. When we finally found the access door to the basement, we removed 10 dead cats, some appearing to have suffered greatly before they died. During a week of rescue work, we pulled 27 living cats from that house. Each cat had burns on its paws from lengthy exposure to urine. Most had some corneal scarring, some were missing eyes, and all had URIs (Upper Respiratory Infections) and thinning hair from flea infes-tation. The 10 deceased cats were transported to our shelter veterinarian’s office for cremation, and the SPCA plans to place their remains in a peaceful location.

In 2015 the SPCA kicked off its first summer youth program. During this weeklong camp, children learned the proper handling of cats, dogs, and puppies. They made toys, beds, and treats and bathed pup-pies. Camp cost $55 per child, but scholarships were available for children who could not afford the cost. Thank you to Hey Collabora-tion and Charity League for the grants that funded this event.

Pick of the LitterStart your search for the perfect companion at the Martinsville City and Henry County pounds. Dogs and cats are anxiously waiting for you! When animals go unadopted at the pounds, our Rescue Coordina-tor starts working to get them out of the pound using our rescue partners up and down the east coast. Visit the Martinsville City pound by ap-pointment and the Henry County pound Tuesday through Saturday between 12:30pm and 3:30pm.

Often, people are reluctant to adopt shelter dogs because of certain preconceived no-tions that something must be wrong with them. A big reason that dogs wind up in shelters is because they were given up by their owners for reasons that have nothing to do with the dog’s behavior. A lot of families give up their dogs because they can’t afford them anymore or they

are forced to move to a place where they can’t have dogs, or, worse, can’t have a dog of a particular breed. With the help of the Sheriff’s Deputies and the SPCA staff who work so hard to place dogs in their forever homes, Chris and I have been able to place three dogs in our family. The latest member of our fam-ily is Patches. He is a mixed breed year-old male with a lot of energy and love to give our family. Every morning and evening he is waiting to smile and bounce and gives tons of love to his parents. Patches joined another pound adoptee, Bandit, and a stray, Chance. Chance is now going on twelve, so Bandit needed a buddy to play with, and Patches is the best. They both love playing with their squeaky toys and running together in the back yard. I could not imagine life now without these two boys. Both have different personalities, but both are so protective and loving. They give more to us than I think we do to them. They both have a family now and a forever home. Please remember that dogs at the pound are good dogs and that a wide vari-ety is available. The staff can help place you with the right dog. Love can’t be bought, but you can adopt it. Many are waiting with love for their forever homes. - Lisa and Chris Garrett

Even before the SPCA took on 27 cats from the hoarding case, our cages were in horrible disrepair. Peeling paint and rusted sides prevented adequate housing. In the face of the cat population overload from the hoarding situation, our cages simply could not handle the workload anymore and started to fall apart. In urgent need and desperation, we bought individual used cages from Lynchburg Humane Society. To make the cages work, we also purchased hardware to assemble them into banks. Once the parts arrived, we were able to assemble 5 new cage banks to update our cat department. Now our sweet cats and kittens can be housed without fear of rust or peeling paint.

Three times a year the SPCA hosts a spay/neuter special to help the residents of Martinsville & Henry County prevent un-wanted litters. In October 2014 during “50 Shades of Spay,” we altered 130 cats, “Fix ‘Em Feb-ruary 2015” hosted over 100 cat surgeries, and “Stop Baby Mama Drama” in May altered over 30 large breed dogs.
