The mission of Women’s Empowerment is to
educate and empower women who are homeless
with the skills and confidence necessary to get a job,
maintain a healthy lifestyle, and regain a home
for themselves and their children.
2014 Gratitude Report
Chanelle’s husband left when their daughter was fourteen days old. Chanelle was left to care for their
newborn, Serenity, and two-year-old daughter, Ellmyra, completely on her own.
When he disappeared, he took their family’s entire income with him. And that is how Chanelle and her
daughters ended up at a family shelter. Homeless.
“Being a homeless mother is so hard. You have to care for your children, try to find a job, find a place to
stay…all at the same time. I felt so guilty that I had thoughts of giving them up for adoption.” But then she
was accepted into Women’s Empowerment, and everything began to change.
“When I first started, I couldn’t figure out how I would ever build a resume. I didn’t have any skills! But in
class the teachers showed me how talented I really am.” Chanelle took our parenting enrichment class and
participated in our domestic violence support group. And Ellmyra and Serenity thrived in our on-site child
development center!
“I connected so closely with my fellow classmates and the staff. They always listened when I was feeling
down and they never judged me.”
Since graduating, Chanelle has finished a certification in Office Administration and is now completing her
Associate’s Degree at Folsom Lake College. She is also working in the college financial aid office! “I am
getting my degree so I can truly provide for my daughters.”
She and her daughters now live in a house with a roommate. She is teaching Ellmyra and Serenity sign
language and to play the piano. After years spent worrying about the effects of homelessness, Chanelle is
proud to say that both daughters are ahead in school.
In five years Chanelle wants to be a homeowner, have her MBA and be working a job that she loves. “I
want donors and volunteers to know that their support makes amazing things happen. I want them to
know that Women’s Empowerment truly changes lives.”

In 2014, your gifts changed the lives of homeless women and
children in a meaningful way:
600 individual women received at least one life-changing service at Women’s Empowerment.
86 homeless women graduated from our job-readiness class,
receiving 8 weeks of employment skills, confidence building,
support and hope. At the end of this class, 95% of students re-
ported “I am more hopeful about my future.”
91 homeless children thrived in our on-site child development
center and enjoyed story-time, playing games, running in
our backyard and blowing bubbles.
89% of women had regained or maintained a safe and stable
home within 90 days of graduation.
88% of women either secured a job or enrolled in school/training within 90 days of graduation.
107 graduates secured a job in 2014
This year we were excited to launch The Get A Job Kit paid
training program to provide an innovative pathway out of homeless-
ness, targeting graduates with the greatest barriers to employment.
In April, local businesswoman Shirley Willey donated her award-
winning Get A Job Kit—the copyright, generous inventory, customer
list and training time.
24 graduates have completed the paid training and 70% are now
employed! All of the trainees worked with their heads, hands and
hearts to assemble thousands of Get A Job Kits, sold to job seekers
across the country and US military bases abroad.
The Get A Job Kit Women’s Empowerment launches a small business!
A huge thank you to Diana Miller Photography for donating
her time and talent, and for creating such beautiful photos!

And the many, many heroes not listed here!
Your extraordinary support in 2014 not only kept our
doors open; it funded the new-found success of
women and children no longer homeless.
For that—we thank you.
2014 was the first time in our history where our
income did not meet our expenses.
While we missed our income goal for the year, we
were still blown away by your generosity.
We retained at least three months of operating
funds in reserves at all times, and our overhead
remains low at just 11%.
For every dollar you donate to Women’s
Empowerment, 89 cents goes directly to fund
programs.
