2. Phonetics & the IPA!

  • Phonetics is a branch of linguistics.

3. The definition of phonetics is the study of the sounds of human language. 4. The human language is made up of a large variety of sounds, which are also know as phones. 5. The International Phonetic Alphabet is widely used to transcribe the sounds of the human language. It has been evolving since 1888. It attempts to represent each sound of human speech with a single symbol. 6. The symbols of the IPA are found enclosed in brackets, [ ] 7. (OGrady, 15-16)
