What is a children’s novel?

Children's Books cover people from mainly the age of 1-12

They are mainly either by children, for children or they are picked for children by children.

The majority of children's books have a purpose such as to teach the child a moral or to educate them such as;

For the younger children they have books which teach them the alphabet

The older children they have books usually based on myths, legends, folklore and fairytales which all have a message to them such as “The Hare and the Tortoise”

What is a graphic novel?

A graphic novel is usually a story told by using mainly images, typically in a comic book style layout or images.

The story’s can range from a true story such as “Maus” a novel written by a Jew who was in a concentration camp where the Jew’s are depicted as mouse and the Germans cats, to story of superhero's….

The amount of text in Graphic novels is usually a very small amount and the images are relied on put across the story. The artwork can be very experimental in style or it will follow a typical comic book style.

Text

There’s not a lot of text used throughout a Graphic Novel, its only really used very briefly to describe a scene if it cant be show very well through an image or it appears in speech bubble, for what a character is saying. The font used is very similar to comic books such as either bubble text or fonts which stand out in mainly block capitals.

Captions

There are four different types of captions all in the same font;

Location & Time- They are the same as your dialogue but in a caption box and italicized.

Internal Monologue-These are the inner voice of the character, they are typically italicized

Spoken Captions-Vocalised speech of a character that is off camera, one of the definitive features are that quotations marks are used on these.

Narrative Captions- These feature the voice of the writer and are italicized.

Pages

The pages are typically more durable than the average comic book, also they can range from any amount of pages really they are typically quite long though because it’s harder to tell a story just through illustration and not a lot of text.

Target Audience

Graphic novels have always because of their, comic book style been stereotypically aimed at teenage boys, but now I think with the vast range of Graphic Novels they are out there the target audience can be anyone from the early teens the late 40’s, because even though typically they were stories of superheroes they now cover a vast array of subjects such as true stories about the holocaust, so they can now appeal to a lot of people. Still mainly its aimed at men in there.

They manage to appeal to their target audience so well because series of Graphic Novels have their own target audience, such as DC Comics so as long as they carry on publishing Graphic Novels with characters from DC in they will still appeal to their target audience.

Watchmen

There is no textat all on the, butIt is still very easyto see what is happening inthe scene. This would Appeal to the target Audience becauseteenage boys are morelikely to pick it upbecause of the lack of text and its easy to follow

The layout of the page is very easy to follow, even though it is an unusual layout going vertically instead of horizontally.

It’s quite a mature illustration style, rather than the superhero style where captions are used to show violence. But in the Watchmen Graphic Novel actual blood and gore is shown, which also appeal to the target audience of teenagers or men because they know that they are interested in action.

The color scheme used, is quite dingy and dark and mainly represents the whole theme of Watchmen.

The artist has use stronger colours for the most relevant characters, soyou don’t get distracted by what’shappening in the background
