Year 1 at Warkworth Castle!

Y1 were very excited to get the opportunity to go all the way to Warkworth Castle in Northumberland. Prior to the trip, Y1 found out that Warkworth Castle is one of the top 10 famous castles in England. After our long bus journey, the children couldn’t wait to explore the castle grounds. They enjoyed looking through the ‘Keep’ using a story sack and eating their lunch in one of the rooms. All children were very eager to walk through the dry moat and luckily the sun came out meaning we could have a long walk all the way around the castle. The children shared fantastic castle stories and identified many parts of the castle. Fun was had by all! Miss Beetham.

Farewell & Good Luck to Ms Martinez After 7 years working at GPS,

in a range of roles, Ms Martinez has just recently moved on. I know you will join us in thanking Ms Martinez for the fabulous contribution she has made to our school, and in wishing her well in her new role and for the future generally. I am delighted to confirm that Miss Henry has taken on Home from Home,

and Mrs Dobson will be taking on Breakfast Club (working alongside Mrs Podd) so, both of those Clubs are in safe hands, and we look forward to ongoing success in providing high quality, & great value, wrap around care for GPS families. Mr McAnaney.

Fun in the sun – French style!

As the sunny weather approaches, year one have been learning all about ice creams in French. They have enjoyed finding out the names of their favourite flavours, even though it has made them quite hungry! They have been imagining that they are in France and they would like to order an ice cream on a sunny day. They have used Euros to pay the shopkeeper for their delicious treat, not forgetting their manners in French of course, Merci Beaucoup Madame! Mrs Blackett.

Year 6 love their ‘Leavers Hoodies’!

Once again, our Friends of Grangetown group have funded ‘leavers’ hoodies’ for our year 6 children! The hoodies feature the first names of all members of each class, and have each child’s initials on the front. The children were thrilled to get them, and have worn them every day for school! We’d like to thank the parents and carers involved in the Friends of GPS, because they have worked really hard, and given a lot of their own time, fundraising for the school. Mr McAnaney.

Reception Parent/Carer Workshop We would like to thank all reception parents/ carers for the fantastic turnout at our Easter workshop. The children really enjoyed working with their adult to complete some Easter

number bond maths activities and making their own chocolate Easter nests. Thank you again and we hope you all enjoyed it! Mrs Hanlon and Miss Pickering.

Medieval Day!

Hear ye, hear ye! Instead of the children in Y1KB turning up to school, lots of kings, queens, princesses, knights and even dragons turned up instead! They enjoyed many medieval themed activities including making crowns, creating small knights, learning a medieval dance and of course, eating a fantastic banquette fit for a king and queen! The children had a fantastic day. Miss Beetham.

Our morning at Gibside!

Flying Start, Nursery and Reception all visited Gibside for a morning of Easter and outdoor fun. We began with an egg hunt around the grounds, hunting high and low in the flower beds, in the trees, under benches to collect the eggs that the Easter Bunny had left for us. We looked around the grounds at Spring changes before having loads of fun in Strawberry Castle play area. We tired ourselves out being really adventurous, climbing up the high towers and speeding down the slides. We had worked up an appetite and we enjoyed our packed lunches together sitting on the picnic blankets. EYFS Team.

Annual Easter Egg Competition

In early April, we held our annual Easter Egg competition! The entries were fantastic, and the standard so high that our school council found it a challenge to choose! A Summer Term full of Music, Drama and Dance at GPS!

This term we have a huge range of exciting events and activities, in the Performing Arts, for both KS1 and KS2. Here’s Mrs Bryant-King to give you the rundown…

Empire Dance – Thursday 20th

June. 20 yr 6 children are getting ready for their performance at the Empire, as part of the Sunderland Schools’ Dance Festival. They’re working really hard, with Miss Beetham, to practice and perfect their routine – we can’t wait to see them on stage!

Infantasia – Wednesday 3rd

July. On the 3rd

July, our yr 2 classes will be visiting another primary school and taking part in ‘Infantasia’. This is an event where a selection of schools have the opportunity to perform to each other, then join together to sing a collection of magical songs. I’m sure it’ll be a fantastic afternoon and Y2 will do us proud.

The Lion King – Tuesday 9th

July. I’m pleased to announce that Y5 (and the Choir!) will be starring in a school production of ‘The Lion King’! The children are very excited to get started and I’m really looking forward to our talented Y5’s bringing the show to life.

Year 3 with the Sunderland Symphony Orchestra – Sunday 14th

July. Miss Stell’s Y3 class have been chosen to take part in a special event with the Sunderland Symphony Orchestra, based on Peter and the Wolf. They will have a visit from some members of the orchestra for an exclusive workshop, then they will devise their own creative performance which they will show on stage at the Sunderland Empire. The orchestra will then perform for everyone. This event is free and open to the public to come along and enjoy - it takes place on Sunday 14

th July.

The Big Sing – Monday 15th

July. The following day our fabulous GPS Choir will be back at the Sunderland Empire performing along with a number of other schools in ‘The Big Sing’. This is a huge feel good event with a live band and involves learning around 15 songs with actions.

Summer Concert – Date to be confirmed (either Wed 10th or Thurs 11

th July). Next we’ll have our summer music

concert in school where our fabulous violinists and cellists get to show off how hard they’ve been working all year.

Grangetown’s Got Talent – Tuesday 16th

July (afternoon). Finally, it wouldn’t be summer without the return of Grangetown’s Got Talent! This will be happening in the very last week of term and I’m sure we’ll have talent in abundance as always!

What a packed term we have in music! Lots of amazing opportunities for our children

and I’m sure they’ll shine and be amazing as always. Mrs Bryant-King
