    Solveig Steeman Littleton High School

For outstanding displays of sportsmanship during

    the 2018 MIAA/Special Olympics Massachusetts

    Unified Track and Field Championships

    Sportsmanship Moment of the Year

Solveig Steeman has been an athlete on the Littleton

High School Unified Track and Field team for two years.

Solveig has cerebral palsy and has participated in the

100m dash and javelin throw. This past season, she

also participated in the 400m dash and shot put.

    During the MIAA/Special Olympics Massachusetts

Unified Track and Field Sectional Championship Meet

at Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School on

May 21, Solveig had just competed in the 400m when

she noticed a fellow athlete, Tyler Plotkin of Groton-

Dunstable Regional High School, in need of some

assistance. Solveig immediately went to help.

“There were other athletes getting ready for their event.

They were lined up for running or wheeling,” Solveig

said. “There was an athlete using a wheelchair in the

100m dash. After the gun went off, all of the athletes

started off for the 100m dash. However, the athlete

using a wheelchair was struggling to push himself to the

finish line. As soon as I saw him, I jumped in to help him

    get to the finish line.”

One week later, at the MIAA/Special Olympics

Massachusetts Unified Track and Field State

Championship Meet, Solveig helped Tyler again.

Spectators were impressed by her support of a fellow

athlete, but she did not help Tyler for the praise.

“I helped him not to feel good about myself, but I

wanted to show everyone that people with disabilities

can do anything. Yes, people with disability are able to

do things, but in a different way than everyone else. It is

okay because every person has different strengths and

challenges. I believe that people with disabilities can do

anything. Anything is possible when putting your mind

to it. It was a great experience to be able to help him.”

Jeffrey Wayman, MIAA official and starter at the

Sectional Championship Meet felt inspired, calling

Solveig’s actions an “exemplary display of the essence

of sportsmanship.” Explaining what he saw, he added,

“Solveig came to [Tyler’s] aid and helped him focus and

begin wheeling to complete his race. Officials, coaches,

competitors and spectators were all impressed with

Solveig’s efforts to help Tyler roll to his finish. It was a

frequent topic of further discussion during the Meet

    and beyond.”

He also commended Solveig’s character and the

example she set for others. “Solveig’s commitment to

competing and her compassion toward fellow athletes

are noteworthy traits that deserve special mention.

Solveig’s family, school and our entire sport can be

proud of her efforts that showed the character toward

which every athlete should aspire,” he said. “Witnessing

her actions has helped deepen my belief in the values

of athletics and why I participate as a Track and Field

Official… it was good for my soul and I’m sure it had a

similar effect on others at the events.”

William N. Gaine, Jr. was appointed Assistant

    Executive Director of the Massachusetts

Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) in October

1979. During his career of over 30 years with the

MIAA, Bill has assumed major responsibilities and

leadership in the areas of student eligibility and

health/safety of the student-athlete through his role

as liaison with the MIAA Wellness Advisory and Sports

    Medicine Committees, the Massachusetts Medical

Society and the Department of Public Health. In July

2013, Mr. Gaine was appointed Executive Director of

the MIAA and Massachusetts Secondary School

    Administrators’ Association.

Sportsmanship is a specific area where Mr. Gaine

dedicated his career. Some of his most significant

contributions were developed through his role as

liaison for the MIAA Sportsmanship Committee. He

worked diligently to uphold the ideals of ethics,

integrity, fair play and respect in interscholastic

athletics. Through his leadership, the MIAA developed

numerous policies, programs, resources and methods

of recognition that establish a healthy and positive

    environment for interscholastic athletic competition

and promote the importance of respect for self,

teammates, coaches, officials, opponents and the

game itself. Statewide programmatic initiatives to

which Mr. Gaine has been an architect and catalyst

    include Coaches’ Education, Student-Athlete

    Citizenship programs, New England Student

    Leadership Conferences, along with Leadership

programs for High School Captains and Community

Service. In 2012, these initiatives became identified

as the “Pillars” of education based athletics and were

organized into the curriculum of Educational Athletics.

That same year at Mr. Gaine’s creation and

recommendation a state-wide standing committee on

educational athletics was approved by the MIAA Board

    of Directors.

In honor of his career-long dedication to the promotion

of sportsmanship in interscholastic athletics, the MIAA

Sportsmanship Committee established an award in

Bill Gaine’s name and made a surprise presentation

to him as the first award recipient during the 15th

Annual MIAA Sportsmanship Summit in 2008.

Lindsey von Holtz is in her 11th year as Athletic Director at

Mount Greylock Regional School. She received a

bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Computer Science

from Mount Holyoke College and a master’s degree in

Athletic Administration from Springfield College. Lindsey

began teaching Mathematics in Keene, NH and coached

Varsity Lacrosse, Varsity Swim and Freshman Soccer prior

to moving to Massachusetts. Lindsey split time between

the classroom and as Athletic Director for five years at

Mount Greylock. She then transitioned to her current

position as Director of Athletics and Co-Curricular

Activities. Lindsey has served as the Varsity Girls Lacrosse

Coach since program inception in 2012 and recently

became the Assistant Coach for Unified Basketball.

Lindsey’s MIAA involvement includes serving on the Board

of Directors (2014–present), Girls Lacrosse Committee

    (2013–present, Chair 2017, 2018), Boys Lacrosse

    Committee (2013-present), Sportsmanship Committee

    (2010-2017, Secretary 2015, 2016, 2017), Cross

Country/Track Committee (2008-2013), and she recently

began serving on the Volleyball and Finance/Personnel

Committees. Lindsey was a facilitator during the first three

years of the New England Student Leadership Conference

and she attended the MIAA Leadership Training Institute

in 2017. Lindsey was a presenter at the MIAA

Sportsmanship Summit in 2014 and at the MIAA Annual

    Meeting in 2017.

At the local level, Lindsey serves as the Berkshire County

Athletic Directors Association Treasurer and Record

Keeper. She was chair of the Berkshire County

Sportsmanship Committee for three years. Lindsey was

key to organizing the 1st Annual Berkshire County

Leadership Summit in 2012 and has planned and

presented at the county event for the past six years. The

event aims to bring together students from across the

county to teach and discuss how students can lead their

teams and schools. This event summarizes the

educational athletics values that Lindsey aims to bring to

Mount Greylock, Berkshire County and the MIAA.

In addition to Lindsey’s service at the state and local

levels, she has received numerous awards and

recognitions. Lindsey was named MSSADA District G

Athletic Director of the Year in 2014. She was the

recipient of the MSSADA District G Presidents Award of

Merit (2016), the MSSADA District G Ted Damko Award

(2012) and was the District G Rich Lewis Award Nominee

(2018). This past spring, Lindsey was named the

Berkshire All Stars Coach of the Year in the sport of

lacrosse, after she and the Mount Greylock Girls Team had

their 100th win and became the first Division II school

from Western Massachusetts to become Central/Western

Mass Finalists. Mount Greylock has been honored with the

District G Sportsmanship Award four times (2011, 2012,

2015, 2016) while Lindsey has been Athletic Director.

Lindsey met her husband Shannon while working at

Mount Greylock. Lindsey and Shannon live in Clarksburg,

MA with his two children (one a current Mountie and one a

recent graduate) and their three cats.

Ron Burton, community philanthropist and former

professional football player, passed away in 2003, but

his legacy lives on in New England and beyond. He

used his football legacy to help deliver his message of

hope, determination and optimism, emphasizing that

love, strong family values and hard work can

    overcome any obstacle.

Mr. Burton hailed from Springfield, Ohio. At the time

he graduated from high school, he was considered the

finest football player in the state and had offers from

47 colleges. He chose Northwestern University and

went on to become one of the greatest players in

school history, eventually being inducted into the

National Football Foundation’s College Hall of Fame.

He was selected by the Boston Patriots as a first

round draft pick in 1960 and played with the team

    until his retirement in 1966.

Throughout his years with the Patriots, and the

subsequent years he spent in broadcasting and

insurance, community service was a constant thread

running through Mr. Burton’s life. He served on many

civic boards and charities and was widely recognized

for his service and philanthropy. He established the

Ron Burton Training Center in Hubbardston,

Massachusetts, with the mission to “build within youth

from low income communities, racial harmony,

leadership, self determination, respect and love for

others through a program of spiritual, educational and

physical fitness training in a wholesome, caring

    environment.”

In 2003, the MIAA instituted a Community Service

Award in Ron Burton’s name and the first recipient

    was his son, Steve Burton.

Matthew Slater played college football at UCLA and was

drafted by the New England Patriots in the fifth round of

the 2008 NFL Draft. He quickly became a team leader

and in 2011 he was elected as a team captain and

selected to his first Pro Bowl. Now, in his 11th season

in the NFL, he is an eight-time team captain, been

named to seven straight Pro Bowls and is a two-time

Associated Press All Pro. Among his career

accomplishments, Matthew has played wide receiver,

safety and a major role on special teams. He led the

Patriots in special teams tackles for five seasons.

What makes Matthew truly special is that his

commitment to excellence on the field is matched by

his dedication to giving back to children and families

across New England. Since he arrived in New England,

he has consistently been one of the most active players

in the community and in 2013, the Patriots presented

him with their Ron Burton Community Service Award for

his commitment to volunteerism. In 2016, he received

the NFL’s Bart Starr Award, which is given to one player

each year that best exemplifies outstanding character

and leadership in the home, on the field and in the

    community.

Among his many contributions to the community,

Matthew is the United Way representative on the New

England Patriots and is working with organizations in

the greater Boston area to recruit one million

volunteers as part of the Patriots Celebrate

    Volunteerism Campaign.

In the fall of 2016, Matthew hosted a fundraiser to

benefit Hurricane Matthew victims in which over

$60,000 was raised for Samaritan’s Purse to assist

with relief efforts in the Carolinas and Haiti.

Matthew has also been active in various children’s

ministries programs at his hometown church and he

hopes to pursue seminary study in his post-football

    career.
