leantech is one of three strategic sectors in the Lyon Metropolitan

Area, along with life sciences and digital-creative industries.

Cleantech players based in the region include companies working in the chemical, environmental, energy, transport and mobility fields, who are looking to optimise consumption of natural resources and reduce the environmental impact of human activities.

Lyon’s cleantech businesses enjoy a fertile and comprehensive growth and innovation ecosystem, offering unique development and investment opportunities. In synergy with the Metropolitan Area’s energy transition strategies, driven by the climate and energy plan the sector can also count on a dynamic public-private-partnership structure, ensuring that research and development conditions are well-adapted to cleantech projects. These are just some of the factors which make the region a destination of excellence for cleantech activity and innovation.

t the heart of the cleantech ecosystem, the Metropolitan Area

has a clear goal: to further strengthen the cleantech supply chain, in line with its energy transition strategy (climate plan, energy master plan). This vision translates into initiatives at three levels.

The organisation and coordination of the local ecosystem bringing together companies, from start-ups to large corporations, universities, public and private research centres and financial backers and helping create resilient networks.

The promotion of environmentally-sound economic development, to help meet societal challenges through the renewal of industry, to support the local economy and to increase the availability of technologies.

The structuring an offer of turnkey services to support innovation and improve the competitiveness of businesses at local, national and international levels.

An ecosystem of stakeholders

and services TO HELP PROJECTS

GROW AND SUCCEED

Collaboration FOR INNOVATION Beyond its industrial history and its high-performing economic, scientific and academic fabric, Lyon’s cleantech ecosystem stands out for its ability to foster collaboration within its various sectors. Cleantech players (chemistry-materials / sustainable metrology-construction, etc.) are integrated into the other sectors of excellence in the Metropolitan area (biotech, digital, etc.).

TO SUPPORT SUCCESS

AKING ACTION TO BOOST CLEANTECH INNOVATION

Lyon Metropolitan Area’s initiatives draw support from three key geographical areas that embody the dynamics of cleantech innovation. Each one provides its know-how to drive cleantech forward by meeting three key priorities.

Support for companies and industries to improve their competitiveness and develop their business strategy.

Support for testing innovative products and services through public procurement strategies and public-private partnerships.

Support for the set-up and growth of cleantech projects at all stages of development, from incubation to internationalisation.

With historical support from the chemical industry and a rich economic momentum (6,000 direct jobs and over EUR 300 million in private investment since 2010), Chemical Valley is THE area for the incubation and development of cleantech industries in the Metropolitan Area.Since 2015, the valley has been working to increase the development of new diversified activities integrating the chemical, energy and the environmental industries through its ambitious call for projects programme, «Appel des 30!».

Winner of the European call for projects «Smart Cities and Communities», the Confluence district continues to develop pilot-stage innovative energy services through the deployment and use of new technologies and the involvement of communities.Future projects focus on four areas: the deployment of a central tool for energy data management, the development of electric mobility services, the supply of renewable energy for the whole neighbourhood and the installation of eco-renovation materials for new housing.

With 25,000 students, 2,000 researchers, 70 companies and 700 employees, the LyonTech-La Doua campus is a powerful lever for innovation through synergies between the economic and academic worlds. Under the aegis of the University of Lyon and the Metropolitan Area, the campus enjoys an exceptional level of investment: EUR 343 million in amenities. The objective is to make the campus a leader in innovative cleantech in two fields of excellence, chemistry and engineering for sustainable development.

1 Biomae Specialising in the assessment of chemical contamination and aquatic ecotoxicology, Biomae is developing the first reproducible biomarker for public entities and industrial companies. The company received the special Biocleantech 2015 award (France Biotech) and the Coup de Cœur 2015 special jury prize at the national “springboard for business” awards (ESSEC and the Senate).

6 I-TENIn the market for connected devices, I-Ten has developed a new generation of micro battery, capable of storing ten times more energy than existing models in the same area. Incubated by Créalys (now PULSALYS SATT), l-Ten is in pre-production.

3 Navya Navya is developing a 100% electric self-driving vehicle. It can carry up to 15 people. The fruit of 10 years of R&D, the vehicle is targeted at closed site markets (airports, nuclear power plants, hospitals, industrial sites, university campuses, amusement parks).

4 Enoveo Based in Lyon, India and the United States, Enoveo is a leader in the field of biotechnology applied to the environment and the management of microbial resources. The company was selected from the list of French start-ups that have developed climate solutions as part of COP 21.

SOME successstories

2 Mathym Mathym, which was created as a result of research work carried out at the Unité mixte du Laboratoire de Chimie based at the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon and incubated at Créalys (now PULSALYS SATT), has developed a process that is revolutionising the world of dental imaging nanotechnology. It received the National Award for Innovative technology Creation in 2010 (M.E.S.R. and Bpifrance).

5 Amoeba By developing a biocide that can eliminate bacterial risk in water, Amoeba is revolutionising the global market for water treatment. Green and profitable, entered the stock market in 2015, it is listed on Euronext Paris, compartment C (CAC small since September 2015).
