Adverb Clauses

An adverb clause is a subordinate clause that modifies a verb, an adjective, or an adverb.

It tells when, where, how, why, to what extent, or under what conditions.

Adverb clauses begin with subordinating conjunctions.

They can come before or after the main clause.

When they come before the main clause, they must be set off with a comma.

Ex: Before I took the test, I studied for hours.

Ex: I studied longer than I ever had before.

Elliptical adverb clauses have words left out of them.

You can easily supply the omitted words because they are understood or implied.

Ex: She can swim faster than I. (“Can swim” has been omitted.)

Ex: While walking, she listens to the radio. (“She is” has been omitted.)
