Welcome from our Vice-Chancellor

Professor Graham Baldwin Vice-Chancellor

University Chancellor and UCLan graduate, Ranvir Singh Ranvir was born in Preston in 1977. She was educated at Kirkham Grammar School and went to Lancaster University, where she undertook her Bachelor degree in Philosophy and Literature followed by a Master in Literature. She then completed a PGDip in Journalism at UCLan in 2000.

It was a chance remark that led her into the world of journalism. “I had thought about teaching, but I really do believe that one has to have a vocation for it and I also considered law but it would have been too costly. Then, I was chatting to a girl at the Sikh Temple in Preston who said a friend of hers had done English and was working for the BBC.

“I had never considered it but I knew my dad would have encouraged it. He passed away when I was nine but I remember he was a great believer in the news, no phones were answered in our house when the news was on and, even better, the best journalism course was in Preston at the University of Central Lancashire. No need to leave Lancashire. It felt like fate. That decided it.”

During the Easter break of her final year of the PGDip in Broadcast Journalism, Ranvir secured a six-month contract with the BBC, before she had finished or passed her exams. Following on from BBC Radio Lancashire, she worked her way through various producing, reporting, news reading and presenting roles for BBC Radio Manchester before moving to television. She joined BBC North West Tonight in 2004 as a reporter, becoming a permanent presenter of the show in 2007. She is now seen on our screens every weekday on Good Morning Britain as the Political Editor. She is a regular guest on the channel’s popular daytime programme This Morning and regularly presents ITV’s News at Ten and the national Evening News. She received a UCLan Honorary Fellowship in July 2013 for her contribution to broadcasting.

Our Coat of Arms The shield incorporates three symbols. The upper part of the shield relates to the City of Preston, represented by the paschal lamb and flag, which appear on the Preston Coat of Arms.

The background to the upper part is blue, which is both the background colour on the Preston Coat of Arms and one of the background colours on the shield of the Harris Institute. The lower part of the shield relates to Lancashire, represented by a stylised red rose of the kind which appears on the Lancashire County Council Coat of Arms. The red rose is placed centrally to symbolise the importance of Central Lancashire in the name of the University. The partition line between the upper and lower parts of the shield is in the form of an arch motif, similar to that used on the shield of the Harris Institute.

In the Lancashire County Council Coat of Arms, the shield is supported by two collared lions, and lions have been adopted as the supporters of the University’s shield. To make them distinctive, the supporters have been depicted face-on, rather than looking across the shield. This is symbolic of the openness of the University. The lions are also shown holding torches and supporting books, which are symbols of learning and education.

In the crest, a lion’s foreleg is shown holding a scroll, which represents the University’s powers to award degrees. It is shown issuing from a wreath of red roses and black leaves, making a connection with the double red rose and black leaves logo of Lancashire Polytechnic, another predecessor institution of the University.

The Coat of Arms symbolises the

University’s links with the past,

its links with the City of Preston and

with the County of Lancashire,

the University’s purpose as an institution

of learning, and its powers to award the

highest educational qualifications. It was

designed by the Richmond Herald of the

College of Arms in 1993 and the design

was approved by Garter King of Arms.

Inspiring people from all walks of life to unleash their potential and achieve things they never thought possible is what we’ve always been about. Thousands of our graduates tell us that their time as a student at the University of Central Lancashire was transformational, changing the trajectories of their lives and opening doors to careers they had always dreamed of. Our long-standing mission to transform people’s lives for the better is encapsulated in our historic motto, ‘Ex solo ad solem’ (‘From the Earth to the Sun’), which calls on people to rise up and strive for success. It was first adopted by our forerunner, the Harris Institute, with the words featuring prominently in its emblem. Today it can be seen our Coat of Arms.

The University of Central Lancashire officially came into being in 1992, but our roots go back much further. In fact, our institution has been in the business of transforming lives for nearly two centuries now. Our story began in 1828, when Joseph Livesey, a Preston-born philanthropist, played a lead role in establishing the Institution for the Diffusion of Knowledge, our distant predecessor. For a monthly subscription, people could enjoy access to a library and reading room, a small museum of natural history artefacts and a lively programme of thought-provoking lectures covering subjects as diverse as astronomy, electricity and ‘vegetable physiology’.

Over the years that followed, the Institution’s successors gradually began to offer more formalised courses and increased access to higher-level education as it evolved into the Harris Institute (1882-1956), Harris College (1956-1973), Preston Polytechnic (1973-1984), Lancashire Polytechnic (1984-1992) and eventually the University of Central Lancashire (1992 onwards).

A Life-Changing MissionIf Joseph Livesey were around today he would no doubt be amazed and impressed at how far we’ve come. Today’s University is a thriving community of around 38,000 students and staff, made up of more than 100 nationalities, and the impact of our work extends far beyond Lancashire. We have forged successful partnerships with institutions as far afield as China and Malaysia, enabling us to bring the life-changing benefits of a UCLan education to people all over the world. Our global alumni network numbers more than 180,000 people.

Right now our Preston Campus is undergoing a radical transformation as our £200m Masterplan project nears completion. Our vision is to create a world-class campus for the benefit of students, staff and the whole community. The new £35m Engineering Innovation Centre (EIC), which opened in 2019, is rapidly becoming a hive of innovation, bringing together University researchers, industry experts, local businesses and students in a spirit of collaboration and discovery. The EIC will engage with more than 1,300 businesses in Lancashire on innovation projects. A new Student Centre, coming in 2021, will look out over our new civic square, which will become an exciting hub of activity, a focal point for community events and an iconic gateway linking together the city and the University. There are exciting times ahead.

Honorary Awards December 2019During the graduation ceremonies, the University confers honorary awards on distinguished people who have made significant contributions to their field or who have strong links with the region.

The University is pleased to award Honorary Doctorates to:

Wednesday 11 December 2019

Dr Susan Scurlock MBE

Susan receives her award to acknowledge the significant contribution she

has made to education and engineering. After graduating from UCLan,

Susan started her career as Head of Information Communication Technology

at a local secondary school. She then left teaching to set up national charity

Primary Engineer as she identified a need for engineering to begin in primary

schools, with an emphasis placed on teacher training. The programme has

now expanded into secondary schools, linking engineers and apprenticeships.

Her programmes have reached more than 100,000 children and 3,000

teachers and it is helping to meet the UK’s current skills gap.

Monday 9 December 2019

Professor David Croisdale-Appleby OBE

David receives his award to acknowledge the significant contribution he

has made to the health and social care sector, particularly through his

development of social work education. David, who is recognised worldwide

for his campaigns around the injustice of apartheid, has held several Ministerial

appointments since the late 1990s in the integration of health and social care,

dementia and mental health. His Croisdale-Appleby Review of Social Work

Education was accepted by the Government and forms the basis for

the current extensive reform of the profession.

Monday 9 December 2019

Dr Eric Northey

Eric receives his award to acknowledge the significant contribution he has

made to the University through his leadership in the establishment and

development of the Whittingham Lives Association. With the Cul-de-sac

Theatre company, the playwright and mental health activist produced three

plays for UCLan, which all explored mental illness. He followed this up with

a play involving UCLan astronomy and drama students. Recently, he worked

with the University and other local bodies to create The Whittingham Lives

Association, a multi-faceted arts and heritage project focussing on the culture

and legacy of the nearby Whittingham Asylum.

The University is pleased to award an Honorary Fellowship to:

ALUMNI NETWORKALWAYS PART OF UCLAN

CongratulationsWell done on gaining your qualification and being here today, it is a great achievement, and one of which you and your family should be very proud.

As a UCLan graduate, you are entitled to join the UCLan Alumni Network. We really value our relationship with you and want to let you know we are here for you. Whether you want careers advice, business start-up support, or you just want to stay in touch – we are here for you, now and in the future.

Careers support You can continue to access support from UCLan’s careers service for as long as you need to, either via our online service or drop-in facility in Foster Building. We can check your CV, help you prepare for assessment centres and interviews as well as helping your search for a job and graduate coaching. Our online service is available through CareerEdge.

Business and entrepreneurship support No matter when you graduated, all our alumni can access a range of services that will assist you to kick-start and grow a new business. We offer free advice and mentorship for start-up businesses and freelancers, free skills-development workshops and networking events, as well as access to business incubation facilities.

Join the Alumni Network nowTo join, visit uclan.ac.uk/alumni and click on the ‘join us’ link, or telephone 01772 892344 and we can complete the application process for you.

You can update your contact preferences at any time by visiting our website, emailing or phoning us, or you can contact us via Twitter.

Twitter: @UCLanAlumni Visit: uclan.ac.uk

Email: [email protected] Tel: 01772 892344

Keep in touch via our alumni networking platform uclanconnect.com

Professional development We can also help you if you wish to continue your studies at UCLan, and you may be eligible to receive an alumni loyalty discount on further study or CPD. In addition to this, you may be able to apply for a UK Government postgraduate loan to help you with your continuing education.

Other benefits As a member of our Alumni Network, you are always part of UCLan. We’d love to see you back on campus, whether that is in the Library, with book borrowing rights, or at Sir Tom Finney Sports Centre or UCLan Sports Arena, with discounted alumni membership.

Graduate outcomesAll universities are required to ask those who have completed a course to take part in an annual survey to find out what happens to them when they leave. The survey is called Graduate Outcomes and you may be contacted 15 months after you leave UCLan to take part. Owned by HESA (Higher Education Statistics Agency), they will capture your activities, views, achievements and perspectives after graduation – whatever route you take.

Knowing what our graduates do when they leave is extremely important to the University, so we would really appreciate it if you could complete the survey when you receive it.
