Tips on applying for a job Companies put a lot of energy into attracting, selecting, developing and rewarding performers who deliver on their commitments. As a result, the companies want you to put just as much energy into your application. When you apply for a position, your CV and covering letter are your only chance to show the company why they should consider employing you. Remember, you will be one in possibly hundreds of applications they receive. The selection panel may only read over your application for 5 minutes so you need to ensure they put your CV in to the ‘maybe’ pile for further consideration. Before you even start to write your application letter research the company and the position

• Where is the company located, • Are you prepared to relocated if the company is located in another state or has offices in

another state, • Are you interested in the type of work the company undertakes, • Are you interest in travel if this is indicated in the position description • Consider what is important to you in the work environment. Does this align with the

company’s values? • Read the company website to find out their key employment areas. • Read over the company’s “Vision” statements and think through what you can offer the

company and what they can offer you. Make a list of these for the interview (dot points). • Study the job description and think through why you could be the ideal candidate. • Always check your CV for spelling and grammatical errors - a good CV will make you

stand out. Ask a few people to proof read your letter and CV. Do NOT, under any circumstances, use TXT language in your CV or application letter.

• Keep your application letter simple and clear. Remember that people want to discover your strengths without being overloaded with information. Companies are only interested in your tertiary studies so listing copious amounts of achievements from high/primary school will detracted from your application.

• Include a photo of yourself. However, don’t have a photo that detracts from your CV and letter. It is NEVER a good idea to have a photo with the “sexy bedroom pout” on your CV!

• Cover only the main points in your covering letter: why you want to work for the company, why you are qualified and a little personal background relevant to the vacancy for which you are applying.

• Include your email address as well as your contact number(s) on your CV. • Most systems are electronic, so use the company’s Internet site to submit your

application. If you experience problems submitting your application, then ring the company for help. If for some reason your application is not uploading ask for an email address to send it to. Ask in the email for a confirmation that your application has been received. If you don’t get a reply then call and ask if they have received it.

In your letter, be honest, clear, and concise - show your enthusiasm for the position you are seeking. It is better to have one page of relevant information than three pages of unrelated information to the position being advertised. Preparing for an interview:

• Familiarise yourself with the company business. Use their website - it is there for you to learn about the company.

• Know yourself - know your strengths and understand your weaknesses. Be prepared to answer questions about yourself, your background and your motivations. Make a list of possible interview questions the selection panel may ask you and practise them e.g.:

o Why do you want to work for “Company Name”, o What can you offer “Company Name”,

o What did you gain from your vacation work experience with “Company Name” etc. o Where do you see yourself in 2, 5 and 10 years time o What are your strengths? o What are your weaknesses? o Are you prepared to travel?

• Bring extra copies of your CV to the interview. One to share with the interviewer and one for you to refer to in case you need it - you will feel more confident and prepared.

• Relax. Take a few moments before answering each question. Keep your responses clear and concise. Remember it is not the length of your answer but its quality which will win you the job.

• Make a list with a few questions to ask the interview panel and don’t be afraid to refer to it when asked for your questions. This shows you are prepared

• Dress well for the interview. If you are offered the position you must be as happy with the company as they are with you so do your research. There is not point applying for a position if your values are not the same as the employers.
