Graduate Profile Employment/ Transfer Data

for the Class of 2015

Produced for Counseling, Career, and Transfer Services by the Institutional Research Department

Acknowledgments This 2015 Graduate Profile provides employment and continuing education information about students who graduated from Tompkins Cortland Community College in August 2014, December 2014 and May 2015. These graduates join the numerous other College alumni making significant contributions to the community. The accomplishments of our graduates are a great source of pride to us. This report will be helpful to faculty, students, potential students, alumni and staff as a resource documenting the demographics, education and work-related activities of these graduates.

Lisa Payne from the Institutional Research Department handled the overall administration of the survey and made this report possible. Teri Evener and Ashley Ahola from Counseling, Career, and Transfer Services spearheaded the follow-up telephone survey with assistance from students Malcolm Thomas and Jessica Meyers. Malcolm also handled most of the data entry.

Methodology A mixed-mode method was used to administer the 2015 Graduate Survey. Students who had applied to graduate in May 2015 received an email inviting them to fill out the paper TC3 Graduate Survey when they picked up their caps and gowns at the bookstore. A staffed table in the TC3 Bookstore collected a total of 47 paper surveys; 31 of them were usable in varying degrees.

Utilizing the official degree files of students who successfully completed graduation requirements in August 2014, December 2014 and those who had not participated in the May 2015 collection effort were sent email invitations to fill out an online version of the survey. Graduates who filled out the paper survey in May but had indicated uncertainty about their fall plans were also given the opportunity to update their responses via the online survey.

From August to September, several email reminders were sent to non-respondents. In mid-August, those with a domestic mailing address who had still not responded to the survey were also sent a postcard reminder. In addition, a survey announcement was placed on the main TC3 website and posted to the TC3 Facebook page. Phone calls to collect the data were then made between November and early January.

Established in 1993, the TC3 Global Connections program is a formal collaboration with international institutions that enable students to study at their home (foreign) institution and TC3. This unique dual-degree program allows students to receive an associate’s degree from TC3 that complements their home country’s degree.

Of the 695 students receiving degrees and certificates, 37 are Global Connection program graduates. Fifty-four percent of the Global Connection graduates completed a transfer degree program, while 57 percent of core enrollment graduates completed a transfer program.

Out of the 695 graduates, the oldest was 44 years old; there were 5 students at age 17. The majority of the graduates (458) were in their twenties. Sixty-nine were younger than 20, one hundred and three of the graduates were in their 30s, thirty-seven were in their 40s, twenty-three were in their 50s, while five were 60 and older.

Employment Profile Seventy-three percent of the graduates joined the workforce (255 of 349).

Eighty-five percent (216 of 255) of all working graduates are employed in New York state. Two percent (5) of graduates are working outside New York state in Pennsylvania (two), Colorado, Maine and Oregon (one each). An additional three percent (eight) are employed in foreign countries including the Dominican Republic (five), China, Canada and England (one each). Ten percent (26) of the employed graduates did not indicate the location of their employment.

Career Program (Certificates/A.A.S.) Graduates

Of those career program graduates choosing to join the workforce, 96 percent were employed (128 of 134). Seventy-five percent (96 of 128) were in jobs related to their recent field of study at Tompkins Cortland Community College.

Seventy-nine of the career program graduates working in their field of study remain in the central New York area (within 50 miles of TC3), with 57 in the immediate local area (Ithaca, Dryden, and Cortland).

Graduates were asked if their recent degree helped them achieve their current position. Of the 95 career program graduates who were employed in their field of study and answered the question, 78 percent (74) said their degree helped “a great deal” or “to some degree.”

One third of the graduates who indicated that their employment is related to their recent degree commented about their situation. Several indicated that the degree was essential to their job. One graduate commented, “[the degree] looked good on my resume and gave me a good foundation.” Another graduate said, “it made me employable at the same time giving me the ambition to continue with my education, which my employer really liked.”

Most graduates who said their recent degree had minimal or no effect in achieving their position said that they already had their job before graduation.

Of the ninety-five career program graduates who were employed in their field of study and answered the question, ninety-two percent (87) said their degree helped advance or improve their job performance “a great deal” or “to some degree.”

A little over a quarter of the graduates commented about how their recent TC3 degree or certificate directly contributed to the performance or advancement of their job. Several graduates indicated gaining personal awareness, such as, “I definitely gained some skills and different insights through many of the classes I took; learning always helps you grow and become better at what you do” and “I can look at things in a different perspective.” Many graduates said the skills they learned at TC3 prepared them for their job. “I learned excellent clinical skills in the TC3 nursing program that I use every day in my new position”; “if it was not for the ability to work at TC3 as a student worker to gain knowledge and grow faster in the computer field, I would not have my current position.” One graduate summed it up by stating, “TC3 showed me how hard work pays off. I am proud to say I graduated with high honors from this school.”

“The opportunity to complete my courses online made a big difference. Juggling a full-time job, kids, school, time with a spouse who is also a full-time student, and all of life's other excitement is difficult, but online learning makes it possible.”

“I had a great experience at TC3! I've met some of the greatest friends, and really loved how personal professors and advisors were with students. I also enjoyed the convenience of all the classes being in one building. I already miss TC3! Starting a job soon.”

“My education and experiences at TC3 are valuable ones that I will carry with me into my future education, and future employment.”

“I learned practical skills at TC3 which I found very valuable when pursuing a career after school.”

“TC3 helped me apply to a company I wanted to work for. I think they took me more seriously because of my education. I loved TC3.”

“TC3 was the best academic experience of my entire life. I learned so much about myself, and was able to find out what my vocation was. I am forever grateful to TC3 for all the positive changes it brought to my life… Words cannot express my satisfaction with TC3 – [it] is the right place to start. I loved the time I spent there. I feel so prepared as I move on to receive my Bachelor's degree.”

“TC3 was my first choice... Not only did I receive a fantastic education, but I'm also not $30,000 in the hole after earning my Associate’s [degree.] The people at the school have helped me time and time again, in particular the good people of the Baker Center tutoring lab. There were many times when I was lost or confused, I simply asked for help in an office around the school and was promptly directed to wherever I needed to be or had any questions I asked answered. Overall I think I had a very positive experience with TC3 and will continue to support the school whenever I can.”

“I think TC3 is a remarkable institution with many dedicated teachers… I enjoyed TC3 + being a non-traditional student in the Pathways Scholarship Program. I’m presently enrolled in a part-time semester, taking 2 pre-reqs then applying to various colleges for a Bachelor's degree, perhaps in history.”

“I think that TC3 is a great start for anyone who is transitioning from high school graduate to college student. With the correct guidance, bonds can be formed and I think that it’s great where students can still feel close to home, and create bonds with other students as they progress as adults.”

“Really appreciated everything at TC3; staff, students, classes. I work with teenagers and I recommend to all of them that they do two years at TC3 before they want to start a college career.”

“TC3 allowed me to have a more open mind and meet people I never would have otherwise. The classes furthered my knowledge in a variety of subjects. I would never have gotten to where I am now without my time at TC3.”

“I really enjoyed my learning experience at TC3. As a non-conventional student, the professors were very flexible and helped me succeed in obtaining my overdue degree. I finished my last semester strong with a 4.0 and landing my name on the Dean's List.”

“I really would want to thank my professors who were able to help with some of my major struggles. I had limited critical reading skills and I was able to begin with coming up with the appropriate study strategies such as knowing why these events happened and such. Writing to learn was important to me since I was able to pay close attention to how much information was needed to answer the question completely. Lastly, I started to hang out with others from the previous semester and that has really improved my social skills. I also look forward to having excellent people to have for several areas in my life.”

“During the first part of my year at TC3, I experienced the death of a parent. Of course, this was life-altering, and the staff at TC3 was excellent in working with me - from financial aid to counseling. I had a great experience in my year at TC3.”

“I had the best time at TC3 because I met all good and helpful people to achieve my goal.”

“Overall I had a great experience and am very thankful for it. TC3 helped me get motivation to get back into school again. Loved the teachers I had.”

18

“Attending TC3 was a great experience and decision because it allowed me to further my education affordably, as well as take a variety of classes to learn about my interests more in depth. I also found TC3's services, such as the Counseling Center, beneficial in a number of ways. Not only were the staff incredibly helpful and friendly, but I also utilized TC3's Career Counseling and Transfer Services and had a good experience with both. Lastly, I found TC3's Strength Quest assessment accurate and useful when considering degree programs and potential careers.”

“I had an awesome time at TC3 and took advantage of everything offered. TC3 is special because it is one of the most diverse places I have ever been to.”

“I feel privileged to be so close to a community college with such a wealth of resources to offer its community. Everyone should consider TC3 as a part of their pathway to higher education, regardless of their ultimate career goals.”

“Great experience, my advisor and professors were exceptional and really encouraged students to step outside of the box.”

“I experienced, and learned so much from my time at TC3 - some practical some not. I learned so much academically as well as so much real world skills from my interactions at TC3. I would not trade my years there for anything.”

“The photography program has provided me with hands on experiences in the darkroom, with film and digital cameras, and using the computer to process, edit, and print my images.”

“I loved it. Was an adult student, I had seven kids and I was able to graduate with a 3.9. My advisor/ professor was helpful and understanding. Staff support is amazing at TC3.”

“TC3 was a really powerful experience. Having exposed me to such a wide array of the fundamental and not so fundamental concepts that are utilized within my current field, TC3 has given me the confidence to pursue more fulfilling careers geared towards my specific interests.”

“TC3 has been a life-changing experience for me. I am so proud of where I have come and all of the things I have been able to accomplish at this institution.”

Selected Career Curricula Comments The complete transcript of comments is available from the TC3 Inst itut ion Research department. “Great - enjoyed [TC3] very much. In comparison to the other community college I attended, TC3 was by far better in almost every aspect.”

“TC3 opened up so many learning experiences both professionally and personally.”

“My time at TC3 was well worth it. I met a lot of good people, and learned a lot. My classes taught me so much, but I also learned a lot about myself and my abilities. The knowledge gained from my experience was more than beneficial.”

“TC3 allowed me to achieve my educational goals, while taking care of my family. Thank you TC3 for your encouragement, support and ability.”

“It was a great experience, and I'm very happy to have a degree.”

“I'm truly grateful for all that TC3 has done for me.”

29

“I made the decision to attend TC3 after being laid off from my job as a machine operator in a local factory. As a husband and father of three, this life changing decision was hard to make. I knew I needed to make myself valuable to an employer, and that would allow me to easily find another job… I am happy I made the decision to attend TC3 and obtain my degree. TC3 has given me the tools and foundation that I need to allow me to succeed in my quest for occupational security.”

“TC3 was a great place to start my education!”

“The faculty and staff at TC3 go above and beyond their work. It is with great pleasure that I am now part of the team that serves communities close, far and wide. I came to Dryden to simply earn an associate’s degree. I would have never imagined that I would find a home, a career and begin a family here. I am forever grateful for the experience, knowledge and friendships formed at the college. TC3 is definitely a place I recommended for many and will always hold dear to my heart. TC3 has given me a fresh start to my life and that is simply irreplaceable. I look forward to giving back for many years to come.”

“I loved TC3, the staff, the teachers and my advisor all were amazing. They impacted my life in such a positive way. I received two associate degrees from TC3 and I loved the school. As I move on to BU to receive my bachelors in political science and then my MBA, I take the skills and confidence instilled in me by positive experiences at TC3.”

“I loved every minute of it - the people, the environment, sports programs, everything there is, is very well done. The direction the school is taking with new programs as well as opening up to the rest of New York state makes me feel the future of TC3 is a very bright one.”

“TC3 helped me figure out how to start my career and what I want to achieve in the long term. I met great professors and I had some of the most amazing learning experiences.”

“TC3 prepared me for the career part of my life not just the degree.”

“I loved being at TC3, being in class [and] studying hard topics with the best of them. I'd rather be in class than working in retail, which can be "mind-numbing, stressful, and boring. [I] plan to continue on in college.”

“TC3 was the best college I could have attended. The professors knew you by name and shared personal stories that related to finding a job after college. I learned more valuable life lessons, school material, and [about] myself while attending TC3. Thank you TC3 for helping me become a better person and a more knowledgeable individual. Once I get the job of my dreams, I will succeed because of the knowledge and skills taught to me by the wonderful professors at TC3.”

“I loved my time at TC3! I am a first generation college student and TC3 was great at making sure I was comfortable and understood what to expect. The professors were amazing! One in particular sincerely cared about making sure I graduated. They all did but this one stuck with me… I loved the diversity of the students as well as the open-minded campus. I was able to join and appreciate many clubs and after school activities. My time at TC3 is certainly one of the most memorable times of my life, and it has prepared me for my future.”

“I started part-time at TC3, as a non traditional aged student, without prior college credits. Even though I was nervous due to my "rusty" skills in writing and math, I was supported by many resources offered at TC3 that my confidence was quickly developed and my eagerness to get accepted into the nursing program propelled me

30

forward to get all the prerequisites necessary for acceptance completed. It took me four years to get my degree, but I would do the same thing a thousand times over! I will always have fond memories of the supportive staff at TC3!”

“The nursing instructors are awesome! They are very knowledgeable and encouraging yet hold us to high standards. Nursing is a challenging profession and I am thankful for all that they have taught me. It's not easy being a new nurse now, but I am very thankful for how hard I had to work because I have been taught well.”

“The Paralegal Studies program was rigorous and thorough. I was attracted to TC3 because the program was available online, which allowed me to work and study. I did take classes on campus as well, and thought all of my professors were fantastic. I think the law library was adequate. I really appreciated having access to online publications through the library system. I enjoyed commuting to campus just so I could see the hills. TC3 is a great place to study.”

“I enjoyed going back to school at my age; I was doubtful at first. I really appreciated the energy and support I received while attending TC3.”

“I loved my experience at TC3. I think it has a very friendly learning environment. The instructors are very well versed in the subjects they profess.”

“It was a very great, well rounded experience I would say.”

“The nursing program is awesome! The professors are very helpful and knowledgeable.”

“I had an excellent educational and social experience at TC3. Although older than the majority of students, my classmates and teachers welcomed me. I felt accepted and respected by both professors and students alike. My professors were excellent and provided helpful handouts and encouragement.’

“TC3 has been a wonderful stepping stone for me. I will forever be grateful for the relationships I have formed here, and the overwhelming community of supporters.”

“My experience throughout the years have been good, starting originally in 1999, my return in 2003, and my completion of my degrees in 2013-2014. I love the small campus, easy to access classes, and the friendly teachers.”
