The Department of Plant Pathology and Microbiology would like to drop the requirement for GRE cores for all applications to our graduate program (MS and PhD), and make it optional for graduate applicants.

Recent studies ha e shown that GRE scores are not pred ictive of future succes in graduate chool. As a result many graduate program across the country are dropping the requirement for GRE scores for graduate applications. SUBJECT: Programmatic elimination of the GRE score for applicants

Many recent studies have shown that the structure of the GRE is disadvantageous to applicants from groups underrepresented in biomedical sciences, and a financial burden for applicants from economically disadvantageous backgrounds, thereby hindering diversity and inclusion efforts. A May 2019 report in Science stated that GRE scores are not highly predictive of success in doctoral degree programs, including passing qualifying exams, length of time in the program, number of publications and individual grants or fellowships, and ultimately graduation. Approximately 25% of U.S. toxicology graduate programs currently advertise that the exam is not needed to apply to their programs, thereby putting our program at a disadvantage in recruiting students underrepresented in the biomedical sciences. For these reasons, the IFT Executive Committee has approved (5 in favor, 1 opposed, 2 not present) on December 19, 2019 to request that the Interdisciplinary Faculty of Toxicology be allowed to eliminate the GRE requirement in its admissions beginning in the next (Fall 2021 start) graduate student recruitment cycle.
