The Lyric Tower is a block away from the Lyric Opera House. The building has residential units, hotel rooms and public spaces that can be adaptive to the market. The rectangular shape of the building encourages its ability to change programmed spaces, allow redundancy in the structure and adapt into the Chicago skyline.

This building was designed around the concept of a community within a community. The facade of the building is fairly translucent to reflect the community inside as well as to observe the community outside. Each program element is enclosed in a self-sustaining unit or mini-building. These mini-buildings are connected with large hallways and green spaces. These green spaces include a large interactive green roof and three courtyards scattered throughout the buildings.

This rehabilitation hospital was designed to provide optimum care and an ideal atmosphere for all of its occupants, patients and staff included. Therefore, therapeutic gardens were incorporated into the program as well as the exterior landscaping. Every floor in the building has at least two therapeutic gardens and the site includes five healing pods on the required site easement.

The goal of this 100-bed hospital in rural Afghanistan is to provide urgent care to a country with a poor health care system. The hospital is located in Gardez, approximately 80 miles south of Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan. The program consists of the following departments:
• emergency• imaging• surgery• labor & delivery
• rehabilitation• dental• outpatient services• pharmacy
Due to the low literacy rate and lack of health care knowledge, we added the following facilities to supplement the required program:
• Nutrition Awareness Center• Education Unit• Family Housing• Religious Center
Care of Afghan Families (CAF) is a non-governmental organization established in Kabul. Their mission is to enable families to fight against diseases and their causes - poverty, unawareness and injustice. Their program consists of three branches:
• Nutrition• Health• Education
We propose a partnership with CAF to encourage community development in an area where
education suffers, poverty conquers and hunger destroys.

In the city of Gardez:• Fuscia lines represent main
thoroughfares in the city. The fuscia nodes symbolize roundabouts where the public roads intersect.
• Blue lines connect the large fuscia colored highways to the subdivision roads, colored yellow.
• Yellow lines are the local roads like subdivisions and neighborhood streets.
In the hospital:• Fuscia lines correspond to the
public hallways with circulation desks and a water feature representing the nodes in the city of Gardez.
• Blue lines are the interdepartmental hallways that could be used by clinicians as well as public occupants who know where they are going.
• Yellow lines are the hallways used by individualized departmental circulation. It is assumed that these hallways are not public.
We analyzed the layout of the city of Gardez in order to relate the organization of the city to our hospital. We believe that having a hospital designed around local traffic patterns could help with way-finding for a population with extremely high illiteracy rates.

The large Iwan arch entryway draws the attention of visitors to the main entrance when they enter the hospital complex. A round-about is
centered in front of the main entrance to allow easy drop-off and pick-up of patients.

The surgery department is located directly next to the emergency department for maximized care for critical patients. The clean corridor is located directly between the operating rooms (OR) and the sterilization & decontamination rooms for easy transfer of clean supplies. The centralized nurses’ station oversees patients in the PACU bays, prep bays and the isolation room. The laboratory and blood bank are strategically located adjacent to the ORs.

The labor and recovery bays are located along a central courtyard to provide optimum views and daylight to female patients. Coupled nurse stations control access into this department. A family waiting room complete with a full kitchen provides a comfortable place for family to relax during extended stays.

This department was designed with an open layout to ensure easy navigation. The program included dental, vaccination and exam rooms. A health education center was added to promote healthy lifestyles for Afghan community members. Due to the Bazaar, it can be assumed that there will be an increased number of hospital visitors. Therefore, the size of the dining hall was increased from the required programmed square footage. The loading docks in the materials management area allow supplies and materials to be easily inventoried and exchanged as necessary.

In Afghanistan’s culture, it is tradition to separate the wards by gender. This design places the men’s wards on the south side of the hospital and the women’s wards to the north. The orientation of the beds allows patient to sleep on their right side, facing Mecca honoring Islamic preference. A courtyard connects the two Men’s Wards through a day room.

Women’s Nursing WardThe women’s ward is located directly adjacent to the emergency, surgery and labor & delivery departments to maximize female patient privacy per religious preferences. The women patients have a private clinical corridor to transfer them between departments without overlapping with male patient circulation.

The courtyard provides a buffer zone between the public Bazaar and more private men’s ward. A religious center was added for patients, staff, family and bazaar users. A water fountain in the middle of the Bazaar provides a elegant setting for ablution. A loggia connects the indoor and outdoor Bazaar, blurring the line between indoor and outdoor dining spaces.

Due to the small percentage of people who utilize current hospital services, a major goal was to design a hospital that would encourage use of the facilities for reasons health-related or not. The Bazaar promotes community involvement within a hospital setting. The hope is that visitors will become comfortable in a clinical setting, and when health issue arise, they will be more likely to visit the hospital.
