or restrictions. This is left for discussion between parent and child. I understand that balances are checked on a regular basis but my child may purchase multiple

items and then have exceeded his/her limit, therefore I may be charged accordingly. Youwill be contacted once your student(s) account reaches

The upper campus hot lunch service is available for $5.00 per child and can be pre-paid at the beginning ofthe year. Students who do not pre pay will be charged per item. Prices range from 75 cents t o $4.00 per item. Ifyou are unsure if your child would like to participate, please send them with cash until you have reached a decision, because enrollment is final.

If the school year has alreadybegun, please allow up to 10 days for our staff to respond to add your child to enrollment. Students enrolling latemust bring in cash until their account is activated. This is due to a high volu me of calls in August and SeptemberThank you in advance for your patience.

Payments:Paymen ts are accepted 3 different ways. By check, credit card, or PayPal. If paying by check, you may mail in acheck to our business address and must include the completed enrollmen t form. If paying by credit card, fill out theappropriate credit card form and at tach the completed enrollment form. This credit card option is most convenientif it is faxed to our office. If paying by PayPal, visit our website and carefully choose your students grade andoption. This form of payment is not complete until an enrollment form is mailed, emailed, or faxed to our businessAll accounts that are missing either part, enrollment form or payment are not completely processed and are placed

on hold. All faxes sent to our business office are secure and sent to a locked office.Absence s & 09-10 Credits

Absences must be emailed to assure proper credit. Please include childs name, grade and date of absences in memoline or the student can simply let the cashier know about the absence and it will be written on your childs account. We do not keep a log of student absences. It is also NOT the LJCDS facultys responsibility to report your childmissing lunch on a certain day due to a sickness, religious holiday, field trip, class party, or doctors appointmentTo make mat ters simple, please email us and give your name, your childs name, grade, and reason for absence. Wewill be happy to apply the credit towards a day that they are not signed up for or apply the absence to the followingyears lunches. Late emails are accepted up to two months past an absence, excluding May, we must receive alabsences in ample time to process all new enrollment forms for t he following year. However, students participatingin a special lunch or field trip that we are unaware of in advance will not be issued a credit, this is due to the amountof food that is prepared and thrown out. Please give us at least two days notice for these special events. When wemiss a whole grade without notice, food is wasted. If you participated in the lunch program the previous year, you

will receive any available credits that may be applied to the upcoming school year. These credits are onlyavailable to those who emailed or called in their childrens absences in advance and are added to our absence roster. If your child is expelled during the year they will forfeit their lunch account. We will allow you to apply theremaining balance to another students account of your choice if desired.

I.O.USWe understand that sometimes lunch money gets misplaced and forgotten at home. The best way to avoid thissituation is by taking advantage of the pre past year, with several students utilizing this system as a CreditSystem. There is a separate program for credit. This is when the paren t/guardian pays in advance. Students withIOUs that exceed $25 will not be issued any further IOUs. This is looked at as taking advantage of our system. We ask your cooperation to pay back your I.O.U as soon as possible, preferably by the next school day, this is not a credit system, simply a courtesy towards your child. I.O.Us that are left unpaid will be

submitted to the business office here on campus or sent to a collections agency. We will not accept anyI.O.Us the last month of the school year. We appreciate your cooperat ion. -paid service. We encourage alstudents to take advantage of the pre paid system. We highly recommend this to s tudents that acquired a significantamount of I.O.Us this last year. I.O.Us will be given to any children that forgot their lunch or lunch money. Wehave a policy tha t No child is turned away. Students will not receive the hot lunch as an alternative. They wilreceive a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, small piece of fruit, and water. This is being implemented because ouIOU system had been abused this

Alternative Menu ChoicesAlternative choices will be available. Not all alternat ive choices are available each day. We will try our best to st aystocked.

Special DietsWe are unable to accommodate the Gluten-Free diet at this time. Please note: we are unable to guarantee that yourchild will not choose these items that they are allergic to. We stress that your child be aware of their restrictionsHowever, we are highly aware of the seriousness of peanut allergies and shellfish, and for this reason, the onlyproduct we carry inside the Lunch Room that contains peanut products is the Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich andthere are no products that are prepared tha t contain shellfish. **We do not use peanut oil or any type of nut oil.

Credit syste m and Information about the Lunch Count erCredit applied toward a student is available for any product sold at the lunch counter. Creditsare not redeemable as cash. **The lunch counter is not part of the pre-paid lunch program. Items vary andinclude the following items: Chicken Caesar Wraps, Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches, Turkey and Swiss Croissant,Popcorn, Fresh Muffins, Cookies, Pasta Bowl, Macaroni and Cheese, Chicken Teriyaki Bowl, Bagels, Caesar SaladFresh Whole Fruit, Granola Bars, protein bars, and daily lunch specials. Beverages are not limited to: ChocolateMilk, Water, Arizona Tea, Gatorade, Propel, and orange juice. No I.O.Us at the Lunch Counter- Time restraints during peak serving times do not allow us the time needed tooffer I.O.Us. Also, our I.O.U list has become long and extensive and we prefer not to add to the list. Students usingthe lunch credit system may exceed daily amounts that are unpleasant to parents. This is why we offer a pre-paidlunch. The pre-paid lunch is only applicable in the cafeteria and not at t he lunch counter.

Financial HardshipStudents that are in financial situations and cannot afford lunch should contact Callie Escobedo, the lunch programdirector. Financial hardship statements will be confirmed with the financial office here on campus. Incomes that areconsidered are comparable to those that receive free or reduced lunches in the public school system. These incomesare considered low income in the general population . For consideration for a reduced lunch fee you may be required

to provide a copy of your latest tax return indicating your income. This is only offered to students who cannotafford the lunch and cannot affo rd to bring their own lunch.Going Green

California Catering and LJCDS are working together to eliminate the amount of waste provided by our snacks andlunches. If you are int erested i n sponsorin g biodegradable products pleas e contact our office.

Vending machine splease remember that our company does not provide the vending machine service here on campus. In addition, wedo not condone the food that is sold in the vending machine for meal time. For questions and concerns regarding thecontent please notify the LJCDS office. We encourage parents to sign up for the lunch credit. This will eliminatestudents from purchasing candy and other items that are not healthy.

    REQUIRED HISTORY DEPARTMENT READING

The study of History at La Jolla Country Day School celebrates critical thinking about historical

interpretations. Well beyond knowing that the Battle of Hastings took place in 1066, LJCDSHistory courses seek to examine numerous theories such as why the battle occurred, what

motivations drove the combatants, and how the future of Britain was affected. Since there is no

one conclusive answer that we as historians can ever find to these questions, we are best servedby looking at the evidence, analyzing its context and perspective, and drawing debatable

hypotheses. It is from this process that knowledge is created.

As such, all of the books the History Department recommends and suggests should be read with

a critical eye. Students and parents are encouraged to read the books together, and should they

need any assistance, they can always contact Jonathan Shulman ([email protected]),

Department Chair, to discuss appropriate ancillary materials recommended by the department.

    Summer 2010

    Dear Parents,

As you and your family get ready for the Upper School, I thought it would be helpful for you to be awareof some specific testing information that may apply to your student.

The testing policy of the Upper School requires that a student who needs extended time on his/herquizzes and tests have a full diagnostic evaluation on file that recommends additional time and/or otheraccommodations. This evaluation must include both cognitive and achievement tests such as the

WISC or the Woodcock-Johnson. Without this, extended time cannot be provided for your child onexams including finals and standardized tests such as SATs. Students whose learning profiles qualifythem for extended time may have up to time and a half to complete an exam.

If you have any questions or concerns, please call me at x 136. Should you wish to get names ofpossible educational therapists or psychologists for testing, I can provide you with a list.

I hope your summer is going well and that each day is filled with sunshine.

    Regards,

Micki MighdollDirector of Student Support Services

    PARENTS ASSOCIATION LJCDSPA.ORG

    June 29, 2010

    Dear Parents,

The goal of the Parents Association is to build a strong, close knit community of families, to provide support for

our teachers in the classrooms, celebrate our faculty and staff, raise funds for faculty enrichment, tuition

assistance, and Community Services Initiatives. We encourage you to become part of this wonderful

    association!

The Parents Association is a separate 501(c) 3 non-profit organization, completely independent from the

school , that works in collaboration with the school to benefit the children of Country Day. The $40 annualfamily membership fee appearing on your statement this month provides the funds to support our community-

building events in addition to our monthly PA meetings. Some of these events include the New Family

Gatherings in the summer, Back to School Picnic, celebrations in the classrooms for the students, faculty &

staff appreciation luncheons, Teacher Appreciation activities, and periodic luncheons with parents and division

    directors.

By paying your dues, you become a member of the Parents Association giving you a vote during the annual

nomination process for the slate of PA officers and allowing you to participate in decisions regarding the PA,

    should any arise.

We welcome you to join the association and look forward to working with you this year! If you have questions

about the PA, please feel free to visit our website at www.ljcdspa.org.

    Warmly,

    Parents Association Board

    PARENTS ASSOCIATION LJCDSPA.ORG

    June 29, 2010

    Dear Country Day Parents:

The Parents Association participates in a powerful fundraising opportunity called eScrip. eScrip is a

hassle-free way to raise funds for the school through everyday purchases made at eScrip merchants. Thisis a system that rewards customer loyalty by contributing a percentage of purchases to our group. You shop

the way you like to shop for groceries, clothing, travel and entertainment. Its simple and convenient, all you

need to do is register your grocery club cards and if you choose, your debit/credit cards.

We are asking every family to support this new fundraising program. The money raised will be used to support

the PA in our effort to enrich our childrens experiences at Country Day. Registration is easy. Please register

    your cards today!

    1. Log on to www.eScrip.com and go to sign up.

    2. Designate our group to receive contributions. Our Group Name is La Jolla Country DaySchool PA, and the Group ID is #500015470.

    3. Register your grocery club cards from a participating merchantand your debit, ATM and creditcards if you wish.

Thats it! Visit eScrip merchants to shop. Its automatica percentage of purchases will be automatically

contributed by the merchant. The fundraising power of eScrip depends on the number of supporters and themonthly expenditures. For example, if 100 supporters spend $500 a month at participating merchants, LJCDS

PA could receive approximately $12,000 (based on a 2% merchant donation). Of course, with more

supporters the better the fundraising potential!

If you have any questions or need assistance registering, please contact Janice Rooney, the eScripfundraising coordinator. Thank you in advance for your time.

    Warmly,

    Janice Rooney

    PARENTS ASSOCIATION LJCDSPA.ORG

By promoting an atmosphere of attentive supervision at social events which are drug and alcohol-free, wehope to work together to prevent drug and alcohol abuse among our children. While we realize such aPledge is not the solution to the problems of drug and alcohol abuse, and will not in and of itself prevent

or solve them, we believe it is an important opportunity for parents to take a stand to promote a safe, healthy, and drug-free environment for our children. Identification of parents who promise to abide by thePledge may simplify parents decisions to allow or not to allow their student to attend a particular socialgathering.

To join other LJCDS parents in taking the Parent Pledge, please read and sign the attached ParentPledge and return to the Parents Association table at Registration in August or mail to: Parent Pledge,LJCDS Parents Association, 9490 Genesee Avenue, La Jolla, CA 92037-1399. The deadline to submitthe pledge is September 10, 2010. We will compile a list of participating families which will be posted onthe LJCDS Website (www.ljcds.org) in the fall. If you have questions concerning the Parent Pledge, donot hesitate to contact me. Please take this pledge seriously as your commitment is the strength to a safeenvironment for our children of Country Day.

    Dear LJCDS Parents,

In keeping with our school philosophy, and in the interest of our students well being, La Jolla CountryDay School Parents Association, with the support of the school and the Board of Trustees has, for thepast few years, established a Parent Pledge regarding student parties and gatherings in your homes. Bysigning the Pledge, parents of 7th12th graders agree to ensure that social events for children in yourhome will be chaperoned and free of alcohol and drugs. The purpose of the Pledge is to promote safeenvironments in which our children can socialize, and to allow parents to partner with their children, theschool, and one another to address issues of drug and alcohol abuse among teens.

We hope you will participate in this effort.

    Warmly,

    LJCDS Parents Association Board 2010-2011

WHY DO WE NEED A PARENT PLEDGE?

Because: Our children need our help, support and guidance to pass through adolescence alcoholand drug free.

Because: Our children need and benefit from a unified statement of positive standards andvalues.

Because: We want a safe passage from adolescence to adulthood for our children without the

fear of drug and alcohol related problems.

Because: We are concerned about the increasing acceptance of adolescent use of drugs andalcohol as a normal part of growing up.

Because: We recognize there is potential civil liability should the acts of minors using alcohol ormind altering substances result in injury to them or others.

    PARENTAL STRATEGIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Parents need to give strong support to one another to host activities without alcohol or drugs,

and to encourage young people to attend such activities.

Call the hosting parents before giving your child permission to attend to be sure the parents arehome and know about the event.

Talk to your teens when they return from an outing; be alert to alcohol and drug use by your teenand others. Notify other parents of suspected alcohol and drug use.

Prepare a Driving Contract signed by teen and parents which outlines the familys penalties forusing, driving under the influence or riding with someone under the influence of drugs and/oralcohol.
