History

Venus is the only planet named after a female goddess. It is named after the Roman goddess of love and beauty. (All the planets are named after Greek and Roman gods except for planet Earth)

Venus-AtmosphereVenus is the hottest planet in our solar system.

Even though Mercury is closer to the sun, Venus is the hottest because it has an atmosphere of carbon dioxide. It also has clouds of acid that are called ‘Greenhouse Effect’.

Temperatures on Venus can reach 465 degrees celsius (870F). That’s more than twice as hot as most kitchen ovens.

Venus-Atmosphere

The atmosphere of Venus is mostly carbon dioxide - more than 96% - an astronaut in full equipment, could only stay on the planet for a couple of hours before being destroyed.

Scientists have detected only trace amounts of water in the atmosphere,

Why is Venus So Hot?

Like a greenhouse, the sun beats down on Venus. The sun’s heat is then trapped in the atmosphere of Venus, (under the acid cloud layers) with nowhere to escape.

Size of the Planet

Page 7: Grade Six Venus Project

Surface Area = 460 200 000 km2, that’s 460.2 million km2

Venus and Earth are called Sister Planets because they are neighbors and they are

around the same size, and similar bulk composition.

Surface Area and Terrain

Most of Venus is covered in smooth Volcanic planes

There are canyons, trenches and mountains

The surface is also covered in lava

Craters on Venus

A crater is a large, bowl shaped cavity in the ground on the surface of a planet, often caused by an explosion or the impact of a meteorite.

However, this is not the cause of craters on Venus - the atmosphere is so hot, it burns up the meteorite before it hits the planet.

Page 10: Grade Six Venus Project

Venus craters are a little unusual, in that there is a lot of melted ground around the crater.

Venus and earth seem to have the same amount of craters, about 900.

Venus Orbit

Orbit period: 225 Earth days.

Length of day: 116 earth days and 18 hours.

It rotates the opposite way as all other planets.

• Venus has no moons!

Fun FactsVenus is the second planet from the sun but it is still the hottest planet.

It is the second brightest natural object in the night sky

We have a test for you after.

Venus is visible to the human naked eye in broad day light.
