How High School Works

Semestering All grade 10 students must take 8 courses

(4 per semester)

1st semester: Sept to Jan – write exams

2nd semester: Feb to June – write exams

You should take at least 1 grade 11 courses

Classes 4 courses every day Every class will have a different set of students -

don’t pick courses because your friend are in it

(you probably won’t be in the same class)

Passing or Failing If you fail a course, it doesn’t mean

you fail the year, it just means you may have to take that course again.

All students need to meet the Nova Scotia Graduation Requirements in order to graduate (this will be explained later). These requirements have nothing to do with what you want to be when you grow up.

International Baccalaureate Options and Opportunities French Immersion

The IB Diploma Program is an international program that creates literate, articulate, and confident learners that have an understanding of global issues.

The IB program develops students who are:inquirers and critical thinkers open-minded and reflectivewilling to take on challengescommunicators who interact readily and effectively committed, motivated and organized

International Baccalaureate

IB Diploma graduates receive excellent recognition from universities in Canada, and around the World.

If you wish to complete the IB Diploma Program you must take the preparatory courses offered in grade 10. These are coded as Diploma Prep. This doesn’t mean you have to take IB in grade 11.

If you want to take the IB program, you should examine the IB side of the registration form.

International Baccalaureate

IB Prep – English Stream

English 10 DP or English 10 FY (Music students) French 10 DP or Français Immersion 10F History 10 DP Math 10 DP – full year (counts as 2 credits) Science 10 DP Visual Art 10 or Drama 10 or Music 10 or Dance 11 Pal 11 or Phys. Ed 10 or Yoga 11 or Martial Arts 11or Dance 11

Students interested in IB Art in grade 11/12 should take Visual Art 10.

IB Prep – French Stream

Students interested in IB Art in grade 11/12 should take Visual Art 10.

Options and Opportunities

O2 is a program designed to help students work toward a career or occupation in learning contexts which provide linkages to the workplace.

Community Based Learning is an important part of O2, allowing students to explore a variety of careers. Students go on work placements during the school year, and take a number or courses designed to assist them in the market place.

Options and Opportunities

O2 is appropriate for if you:• Wish to explore or develop skills in a community setting• Are interested in a career in the

trades/tourism/entrepreneurship• Prefer hands-on learning opportunities• Prefer smaller class sizes

Interviews will occur later in the school year.

You should pick your courses as if you are not in the program, but fill in the supplementary application form available in guidance

French Immersion Students must complete at least 9 French Immersion (FI)

credits in order to receive a French Immersion certificate FI courses are also designed to be suitable as diploma prep

courses for the IB program Students in FI must complete the following courses in each

of the following years:

Français Immersion 10 – Grade 10

Français Immersion 11 – Grade 11

Français Immersion 12 – Grade 12

French Immersion Credits

In addition to Francais 10, 11, 12, the following FI credits are available to you. Grade 10 students should select 4 of the following:

Picking Your Courses

You should discuss course selection with home and with your guidance counsellor

Consider your academic ability (strengths and challenges) when selecting courses. Ask your subject teachers

Consider you career goals - university, college, etc

Courses will be selected online (PowerSchool) – don’t worry we will help - but make sure you know your password

Picking your Courses…

It is important to pick the right courses for YOU. You can’t change courses in September.

Try to pick courses because:• You are interested in the topic• You need the course to graduate• You need the course to do the things you think you

want to do• You have the ability to do the course

Nova Scotia Graduation Requirements

18 credits are required to graduate from High School 13 are compulsory credits 5 are elective credits – over and above the 13

Maximum 7 grade 10 coded creditsEx: History 10, Math 10

Minimum 5 grade 12 coded creditsEx: Chemistry 12, Law 12

13 Compulsory Credits • 3 English • 2 Math – one in grade 10 and one in grade 11• 2 Science• 2 Other (Technology or extra Math/ Science)• 1 Fine Arts • 1 Physical Education • 1 Canadian Studies• 1 Global Studies

You will be picking at least 5 compulsory credits in grade 10

Compulsory Credits -Physical Education-

1 required credit selected in grade 10: Dance 11 – You just gotta Dance * (Counts as either a Phys Ed or a

fine arts credit but not both)

Martial Arts 11 – you want to learn basic Martial Arts and get in shape.

Physical Education 10 - you want to develop skills - available in all male and all female classes

Physically Active Living 11 - non threatening Gym Class

Yoga 11- you want to be more bendy (and less stressed)

Compulsory Credits -Mathematics-

2 required Math credits;

one in grade 10 and one in grade 11

Courses available for grade 10 students: Math Essentials 10 (Graduation) Math at Work 10 (Graduation) Math 10/Mathematiques 10F (Academic) Math 10 Diploma Prep (Academic)

2013 Grade 10 Math Courses

Mathematics Essentials 10 110 hours (one semester) – 1 graduation credit

Mathematics at Work 10 110 hours (one semester) – 1 graduation credit

Mathematics 10(includes Mathematics 10 DP and Mathematiques 10F)

220 hours (two semesters) – 2 credits – 1 academic math, and 1 other from “math, science, technology.

Students who enroll in Mathematics 10 and Mathematics at Work 10 will write a final exam provided by the Department of Education

Routes through High School Math

If you want to obtain a High School diploma and then: Enter the workforce or an apprenticeship program Apply to Community or private College(most programs) Apply to a Bachelor of Arts program at most universities

Needs: 2 math credits from different grade levels

Math Essentials 10 and 11 or

Math at Work 10 and 11 or

Math 10 and Math 11

Routes through High School Math

If you want to obtain a High School diploma and then: Apply to Community or private College (some programs) Apply to University for a Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of

Nursing, or Bachelor of Health Science (some programs)

Needs: 3 academic math credits, 1 from each gradeMath 10, Math 11 and Math 12

Routes through High School Math

If you want to obtain a High School diploma and then:

Apply to University for a Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Engineering, Bachelor of Computing Science, Bachelor of Commerce (some), or Bachelor of Health Science (some)

Needs: 4 math credits.

Math 10, Math 11, Pre-Calculus Math 11, and Pre-Calculus 12

Calculus 12 is an optional 5th math course taken in grade 12.

Senior High Mathematics: Common Pathways

You mustYou must pick 1 Math

• Math Essentials 10 – want to learn real world math and develop skills that are required for the workplace

• Math at Work 10 – You find grade 9 math really hard and you won’t need math to get into any post-secondary program

• Math 10/Mathematiques 10F - You want to keep your options open and you are good at math. You must pass grade 9 math to take Math 10.

• Math 10 Diploma Prep – You are planning to enter the IB program

Compulsory Credits -Science-

2 required credits 1 required credit selected in grade 10:

Science 10 or Science 10 Diploma Prep Sciences 10F or Sciences 10F Diploma Prep

1 other science course

You can pick a 2nd science in grade 10 Biology 11/Biologie11F - you are REALLY good at science

and you are planning on taking Sciences/Engineering in university

Compulsory Credits -Fine Arts-

1 required credit selected in grade 10 Dance 11 – You just gotta Dance * (Counts as either a Phys Ed

or a fine arts credit but not both)

Drama 10 - don’t mind getting up in front of the class Dramatique, Arts 10 - don’t mind getting up in front of

the class in French Music 10 - you are currently in band Visual Arts 10 - like to draw and paint

You now should have picked 5 or 6 courses.

You now have to pick 2 or 3 more to make 8.

Remember - you should select at least 1 grade 11 course

2 required credits from either: Technology Science – above the 2 required compulsory

science credits Math – above the 2 required compulsory math

Grade 10 students may or may not select a technology credit

The Canadian Studies credit is completed in the students Grade 11 year.

Compulsory Credits ~Global Studies~

1 required credit from either: Global History 12 or Histoire Planétaires 12F Global Geography 12

The Global Studies credit is completed in the students Grade 12 year.

What Happens When

You will input your courses into power school within the next month. This will be done at school, but can be changed at home for a short time period – TBA

If you need to change any of your courses after you that, please talk to your counselor. They will pass on the information to us.

Course changes after May are not usually considered unless the failure of a course occurs.
