You’re invited to help beautify the sanctuary with flowers for Sunday services in 2020. Remember a special date in your life or a special person with a personal dedication. You may dedicate flowers for more than one Sunday. The cost of flowers for one Sunday is $50 and the florist supplying and delivering your arrangement to church is Fleurish on Walnut Street in downtown Champaign. After the final service on the Sunday you dedicated flowers, you may take the floral arrangement home. The sign-up will be in the narthex on the Sundays of October 27, November 3 and November 10. On Reformation Sunday, October 27, there will be a sign-up opportunity before and after service. On the other two Sundays, you may sign-up between services and briefly after the final service. At the time you sign-up, please pay for the flowers using cash or a check. Make checks payable to Grace Lutheran Church. Thank you very much for your support and participation. If you have any questions, please contact Gloria Rainer at 352-6115. On The Way is a quarterly opportunity to inquire about, explore, or deepen your understanding and practice of the Christian faith. The fall is focused on inquiry, so come with your questions, whether you’re new to Christianity, new to the Lutheran “take” on the faith, or are simply interested in deepening the faith you have held your whole life. We’ll meet on Thursdays from October 10 th through November 14 th from 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the Hoffmeister Room. You may have seen on our calendar that we have slotted the second Sunday of each month to be Grace Food Pantry Sunday. We include this to encourage financial support for this ministry once a month. Food Pantry does not operate out of the General Fund, which is the destination for Sunday morning offerings unless otherwise designated. Because of this, Food Pantry depends on special designation for donations from those in the congregation that wish to support this ministry. Financial contributions are a great way to support Food Pantry, because for every $1 that is given can have the purchase power of much as $10 at Eastern Illinois Foodbank. Please consider making an extra donation next week for Grace Food Pantry Sunday! Just a friendly reminder that our Coffee Hour needs Hosts and Hostesses just like yourself. Coffee Hour is easy and fun. Just make regular and decaf coffee and supply a snack which can be store bought or homemade. You can even fill out the appropriate form for reimbursement. (We ask that your spending not exceed $30.00) After coffee hour just clean the kitchen. That’s it! We are still in need of hosts and hostesses from November 10th throughout the remainder of the year. Please volunteer today by signing-up. Our 7-week course on Hinduism being taught by Professor Bill Schoedel continues. The textbook is A Brief Introduction to Hinduism by Tim Dowley. It is available on Amazon or B&N.

2 GRACENOTES – NOVEMBER 3, 2019

Four nights a week, volunteers take the

Salvation Army’s canteen truck around downtown

Champaign-Urbana with the sole purpose of offering

food, drinks, clothing, blankets, prayers, and

information about agencies that can help the

homeless in our community.

You can help, too! On the second Sunday of

each month, Grace Lutheran is providing 30 peanut

butter and jelly sandwiches to be distributed to the

homeless in our community. We need small groups

of people (3 – 6) to volunteer to assemble and drop

off these sandwiches.

The sign-up sheet for November 2019

through February 2020 is in the Narthex. Please pick

a month and sign-up your committee, small group, or

family to spend 15 – 30 minutes to make a difference

in our community. All materials and directions,

except 3 loaves of sandwich bread, will be provided.

Our Friends at Good Shepherd Lutheran

Church invite us to join them for their Nativity

Walk on December 8th. From 4-6PM, they will have

displays of various nativity scenes, and live music

and refreshments will be available as well. Grace

members are invited to also share their own nativity

scenes they may want to display or are welcome to

contribute to the singing or refreshments for the

night as well. If you have any questions, please

contact Caitlyn.

On November 27th, we are invited to join

our friends at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church to

attend the Thanksgiving Eve service. Service will

begin at 7:00pm, and we will be following the

Compline service with Jason Fisher preaching.

Community members are invited to hear a talk by

Josh Slocum, Executive Director of the Funeral

Consumers Alliance, South Burlington, Vermont.

The free public presentation will be at 2 p.m. on

Sunday, November 3rd at the Champaign Public

Library, 202 W. Green Street, Champaign.

This presentation is sponsored by the Funeral

Consumers Alliance of Champaign County.

Informational brochures on burial, cremation, body

donation and other options will be available. It is the

ideal occasion to raise and resolve any anxieties you

may have about the end of life. For details see

All Saints Sunday– November 3, 2019

In holy baptism God makes saints out of

sinners. In holy communion God forgives

the sins of all the saints. In the assembly

today we give thanks for all the saints

“who from their labors rest,” who have

fought the good fight, who have gained the

crown. In the same breath we petition our

God for the strength to hear and to heed the

admonitions of the Lord Jesus in today’s

gospel. Recalling that we have been sealed

by the Spirit and sustained by the Savior’s

body and blood, we keep on keeping on as

God gives us breath, to the praise of God’s

glory.
