2017 Financial Reports

Gratitude

You know, they say that if we practice gratitude in our daily lives, we will develop an entirely different attitude about things that happen to us. Every morning, I fix a kale smoothie for breakfast. I have a Vitamix blender and it takes that kale, chews it up and you almost don’t realize it’s in there. One of the other ingredients I add is frozen blueberries. Well, the morning of our Christmas luncheon, I went about the usual process of preparing it and when it started to freeze around the blades, I used the plunger to keep it going—with one major exception. I took the top off the blend-er and inserted the plunger into the mix. Now, that is NOT what you’re supposed to do! (who knows what I was think-ing at the time) The next thing I knew, my face, hair, clothes, kitchen cabinets and floor were all covered with bright blue blueberry goop. And the heavy-duty plunger had a haircut (those WERE sharp blades, after all). So . . .I started cleaning. Everywhere I looked I saw blue blobs. And where, you might say, was the room for gratitude in this? Well, quite simply, I was grateful that I hadn’t already dressed for our luncheon. That would have been BAD. And I viewed it as a blessing. I found the place for gratitude in the midst of chaos. You might say that prepared me for the rest of the day. The moment I walked into the First Congregational, I felt a sense of peace in the atmosphere. And when I saw the effort and love that Dawn and the entire Area 3 group put into making our Christmas celebration so special, as William Wordsworth said in one of his poems, “My heart leapt up with joy.” It truly did. I don’t know about you, but I needed that. I was grateful. And the gratitude didn’t stop there. As I looked around the room, I saw our members. Without exception, every single person that I have talked with or worked with this year has been kind, supportive and patient--in ways too many to count. For this, I am grateful. Our Board has discussed many issues at meetings and has always endeavored to make the best possible decision in each situation. For this also, I am grateful. This list could go on but I’ll stop. Except to say that when I opened the envelope that contained the gift certifi-cate to Raymond’s Nursery, I was beyond grateful. Such kindness makes me cry because it touches such a deep place in my heart. There are no adequate words to explain, so I will just say, “Thank you - I am grateful.” Judy Heyward

Western NC Quilters Guild Board Meeting - January 11, 2018 Bridget O’Malley called the first Board meeting of the year to order at 1 pm at the Grace Lutheran Church with the following members present: Linda Gillette, Amy Gillen, Kathy Grogan, Bonnie Hartel, Judy Heyward, Bonnie Kain, Jane G. Kennedy, Elizabeth Leff, Bonnie Lucas, Bridget O’Malley, Mary Anne Patrie, Susan Trotter, Margaret Wills and Renee Zivich. Bridget welcomed the group and made introductions. Bonnie Hartel stated that the lock on the storage unit has been changed, a log has been put in plain sight for members to document their visit and a brief policy has been added to the yearbook to explain the procedure to obtain access. A new key was given to Bridget. Bridget stated that there will be a sew-on-your-own retreat at Bonclarken, Feb. 27-Mar. 1. It will cost is $15 a day. (Contact is Jeri Schneider.) Jane Kennedy spoke about the Quilt Show planned for May 13-19, 2019 also at Bonclarken. The co-chair is Kathy Grogan and the raffle quilt is in progress. Questions about judging and lessons learned were addressed. Margaret Wills spoke about National Quilt Day planned for March 24th at the Hendersonville Library. The theme is Our Feline Friends and Margaret will ask for set-up help at the Guild meetings. Her co-chair Jeri Schneider will be the chair in 2018, (Bonnie Hartel volunteered to serve as the 2018 co-chair). Bridget asked that each Area review the list of charities that the Guild contributes to that are listed on page 8 of the 2017 yearbook. The list will be updated as needed. Kathy Grogan asked that the Areas notify her of the number of quilts and smaller items that were donated in 2017 and who received them. This documents our non-profit status and contributions to make our community better. Bridget discussed her desire to have a member oversee all the donations and initiatives we do to keep members informed of what is needed. Renee suggested that the calendar in the Grainlines be used to let folks know when items are needed most. Linda Gillette volunteered to take the coordinator position for the Guild. Bridget addressed the lack of a procedure for the Guild when a member passes away. After a discussion, it was decided that $25 would be donated to the family’s charity in the event of the death of a member or immediate family of a member. The Sunshine person will oversee this process. A motion was made and approved by the Board. Bridget asked about the rotation of the Christmas party between the Areas. Discussion followed, and it was decided that Areas 2, 3 and 9 would be combined to hostess the annual party. The rotation is as follows: Area 1 - 2018, Area 5 - 2019, Area 8 - 2020 and Areas 2,3 & 9 - 2021. Printing of the Grainlines and the Yearbook was discussed. The plan is to have the yearbook on the website, password protected for members. Bridget will ask at the Guild meeting how many members are interested in a printed yearbook and arrangements will be made. Bonnie Hartel requested that 6 copies of the Grainlines continue to be printed monthly for the non-computer members and to distribute to guests at the Guild meeting. Bonnie Lucas has the keys to the church where we meet. The sound system was discussed, and Susan Trotter will get the microphones checked for function. Future Board meetings will be on the odd months, second Tuesday at 10 am at the Grace Lutheran Church. We still need program chair for 2019. Meeting adjourned at 2:24 pm. Secretary, Bonnie Hartel
