In the GPS are n a, many challengesface the owners and pilots of light jets,t u r b o p ro p s, h e l i c o p t e r s , and other busi-ness airc r a f t . Panel fit, component capa-bility and sufficient Input/Output (I/O )a re just a few of these challenges.

That’s exactly why we created theKLN 900. Incorporating the latest GPStechnology, the KLN 900 can be easilyinstalled in the pedestal of most businessjets and turboprops, saving you time andmoney on installation costs.

The KLN 900 also has ample I/Ocapacity, to provide installation compati-

bility with most business aircraft andallowing you to limit the number ofadapters needed in your airc r a f t .

The KLN 900 is pilot-friendly, t o o.It has an extensive database and feature sall-weather capability. Screens are easy to access, and larg e , e a s y - t o - read push-buttons activate the cursor, choose a“ D i re c t - To” course or call up messages.It provides incredibly accurate position-ing information and is designed to meetTSO C129, Class A1 specifications forn o n - p recision instrument approaches, as well as for all en route and term i n a lo p e r a t i o n s .

The KLN 900 meets B-RNAV re q u i re-ments for European (ECAC) Airspace,when used with AlliedSignal P re F l i g h t ™S o f t w a re Version 2.0 or later. Versions ofthe KLN 900 will also meet PrimaryMeans Oceanic/Remote Operationre q u i rements.

These—and other—advantages makethe KLN 900 ideal for customers whowant to upgrade the navigation capabilityof their aircraft, replace outdated systemssuch as LORAN and RNAV equipment,install an aff o rdable back-up or simplyhave a lower-cost alternative to a FlightManagement System (FMS).

The KLN 900 is a DZUS-mounted Global Positioning System (GPS) that is approved for nonprecisionapproaches.It features a large, easy-to-read, monochrome Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) display, a front-loadingdatabase and compatibility with a wide range of analog and digital inputs and outputs.

Having the KLN 900 in your pedestal or panel is almost like having a very l a rge re f e rence book with charts, radio f re q u e n c i e s and much more in front of you. All your flight information isavailable at your fingertips, controls areeasy to identify and other needed data is literally an instant away.

Let’s suppose you used the KLN 900 during a landing at an airport. The nexttime you turn it on, the KLN 900 will listthe COMM frequencies (see fig. 1) at thisa i r p o r t . Having these frequencies (AT I S ,g round contro l , tower and others),allows you to preset them into yourr a d i o .

After you enter the f re q u e n c i e s , y o u ’ l lp ro b a b l y want to tell the KLN 900 whereyou want to fly. At this point, you haveoptions. If you are re t u rning to the sameairport you flew from yesterd a y , s i m p l ycall up yesterday’s flight plan and invertit. If you’re cleared to a new destination,simply call up that new destination, a n dinitiate “Dire c t - To” operation. If you’reflying a familiar ro u t e , it’s likely you cancall up that previously stored flight planf rom the KLN 900 memory. With the KLN 900, there’s room for as many as 26

p i l o t - p rogrammable flight plans of up to30 waypoints each.

The KLN 900 trip planning pages canbe used to calculate flight times and fuelre q u i re m e n t s . Once you’ve chosen thebest option, y o u ’ re ready to take off .

The KLN 900 After Ta k e o ff

After takeoff, you contact departure c o n t ro l , and you’re on your way.

This would be a good time to getyour primary NAV inform a t i o n . Just callup the Super NAV 1 (see fig. 2) page on the KLN 900. This page appears fulls c reen and shows a miniature CourseDeviation Indicator (CDI) along with distance, ground speed, Estimated Ti m eEn route (ETE), and bearing to the activew a y p o i n t .

N o w , let’s say you want some additional in-flight information, suchas En route Safe Altitude (ESA) andMinimum Safe Altitude (MSA) foryour current position. As soon as youcall up this information, the KLN 900goes back to a split-screen mode (see fig. 3), which allows you to con-t i n u e looking at the NAV 1 pagewhile viewing your new inform a t i o n .

What if you want to calculateother flight data? All you have to dois call up the KLN 900 Flight Calculator(see fig. 4). This page can give youtrue air speed, p re s s u re altitude,density altitude, actual winds aloft(including headwind and tailwindcomponents), Celsius/F a h renheit ork n o ts/MPH conversions, time zoneconversions, and sunrise/sunset timesfor any day and location you select.

The KLN 900 is “P re F l i g h t™ re a d y . ”This means it can interface withAlliedSignal’s P re F l i g h t s o f t w a re, aWindows PC p rogram that transfersuser data (flight plans and waypoints)between the KLN 900 and your PCover an RS-232 link. P re F l i g h t i n t e r-faces with many leading PC flight plan-ning programs, allowing you to planyour flight ahead of time and upload it into the KLN 900 later. PreFlight alsop rovides for easy standardization offlight plans across a fleet of airplanes.

The KLN 900 En Route

While en route, the KLN 900 places an incredible variety of useful in-flighti n f o rmation at your fingertips. It not onlyserves as your primary source for naviga-tion inform a t i o n , it also makes that i n f o rmation easy to use in the context of your flight.

While some GPS units force you tos c roll through text a few lines at a time,the KLN 900 displays up to seven lines of navigation and database inform a t i o non each page of the split screen at once(see fig. 5). Some GPS units leave youguessing where you are during yourflight. There is no guessing with the KLN 900, since the moving map featureallows you to simply and easily monitoryour pro g ress along your flight plan at any time.

By interfacing with certain models o fB e n d ix/King and Shadin air data systems,the KLN 900 will also display True AirSpeed (TA S ) , Static Air Te m p e r a t u re (SAT )and Total Air Te m p e r a t u re (TAT). Wi t hcompatible heading input, the KLN 900can provide real-time information onwind speed and direction (see fig. 6).I n t e rfacing with certain models of Shadinand ARNAV fuel management systems cangive you real-time fuel data, t o o .

It’s also easy to cross specific w a y-points at AT C - p rescribed altitudes with theKLN 900’s advisory VNAV. Just enter thet a rget altitude and desired angle of climbor descent and the system will alert youwhen it’s time to begin your maneuver.

To get a pictorial re p resentation ofyour position and track, you can use thesystem’s moving map display (see fig. 7).This display can show nearby airports,VORs or NDBs. Should a situation arise

The KLN 900 provides you withJ e p p e s e n® N a v D a t a that covers the entireworld. The database is contained on af ront-loading data card about the size of a credit card. Database information is updated by exchanging the card or transferring information from an IBM-compatible personal computer, with dataobtained from diskettes or via the Intern e t .Each database includes StandardInstrument Departure (SID) and StandardTe rminal Arrival Route ( S TAR) waypoints,n o n p recision approaches, airports, navaids,i n t e r s e c t i o n s , Special-Use Airspace (SUA)and airport services.

With the KLN 900, you can also getthe frequency for the nearest FlightService Station (FSS) for weather updates,or you can get the frequency to the n e a rest Air Route Tr a ffic Control Center( A RTCC), eliminating the need to wadet h rough a bunch of charts.

Because you can continually seewhere you are during approach in relation-ship to the destination airportand runways, confusion is all but eliminated (see fig. 9). In fact, at someairports, you’ll be able to fly a safer,straight-in approach (versus the“circle-to-land” required by some VORand NDB approaches).

In short the KLN 900 reduces pilotworkload, which improves accuracyand enhances safety.

T h rough the KLN 900, you can get up to ten minutes’ warn i n g , via a message prompt, before your gro u n dtrack takes you into any SUA, whichincludes: class B and C airspace, C o n t ro lA rea (CTA ), Training, Caution, D a n g e r,

The KLN 900 During Approach

During approach it always seems like you have a million things to do.Fortunately, this is where the KLN 900is at its best. The KLN 900 allows youto continually view a full-screen,moving map of your approach andwhere you are on that approach (see

It’s time to shut down. You can turneverything off, because the KLN 900doesn’t forget. Instead, it stores its lastknown position in its nonvolatile memory, so it will be ready the nexttime you’re ready to fly.

General Description

The KLN 900 is a DZUS-mount,8-channel, IFR-certifiable en route,terminal and approach GPS-based navigation system with a front-loading(see fig. 10) pilot-updatable database

and an upgrade path for precisionapproach. It features a large mono-chrome CRT, and a wide variety of analog and digital inputs and outputs.

A basic installation consists of a DZUS-mounted unit, a database cartridge and a KA 92 antenna. Amongthe additional components which maybe connected directly to increase theKLN 900’s capabilities are: an externalCourse Deviation Indicator (CDI); a Horizontal Situation Indicator (HSI);Radio Magnetic Indicator (RMI); someShadin or ARNAV fuel management systems; several external moving map displays; and certain models ofBendix/King or Shadin air data systems.

world. Both databases contain completeinformation for all worldwide VORs,NDBs, intersections and minimum safealtitudes. For their primary areas, eachdatabase also contains public use andmilitary airports with runways at least1,000 feet in length, airport communica-tion frequencies and runway informa-tion, air route traffic control center data,flight service station frequencies andspecial-use airspace. SID and STAR way-points and approaches are also includedfor each database’s primary coveragearea and may be selected by airport andprocedure name. Outside their primarycoverage areas, the databases containairports with a hard surface runway atleast 3,000 feet in length.
